Is CNG the Future? Affordable Alternative to Electric Scooters!
Hey everyone, welcome back to the channel! Today, we're exploring a hot topic: Is CNG the more affordable option compared to electric scooters? 🚀
Currently, the scooter market predominantly features petrol-powered models, with electric scooters accounting for less than 15% of total scooter sales. While the electric vehicle (EV) revolution aims for affordability, limited infrastructure and adaptability have constrained its widespread adoption. This has opened up the possibility of CNG fuel as a new, cost-effective choice for daily commutes.
Bajaj recently introduced the world’s first CNG motorcycle, capable of covering over 200 kilometers on just 2 kilograms of CNG. According to the company, the running cost is under ₹1 per kilometer, aligning closely with the cost of charging an electric scooter at home, considering current electricity rates.
The challenge with electric scooters lies in the availability of 3-pin sockets at home and covered parking, especially in densely populated urban areas. Despite this, electric scooters are gaining popularity in the Indian market, driven by their environmental benefits and potential cost savings.
In Mumbai, the availability of CNG pumps across the city is commendable, although waiting times at these stations remain a concern.
The installation of a CNG tank in Bajaj's Freedom 125 has increased its weight, potentially impacting the practicality of scooters with similar adaptations. Designing scooters with CNG tanks may require a maxi-scooter layout, which offers larger dimensions and more storage capacity, unlike regular scooters.
Bajaj's development of a new engine for their CNG motorcycle prompts the question of whether scooter manufacturers will modify existing engines or develop new ones for CNG variants.
Looking ahead, scooters with CNG capacity similar to Bajaj's motorcycle could become a reality. Which scooter brand do you think will be the first to embrace this innovative approach?
