Commander Graves' backstory is in his bio in multiplayer. He's an American (pretty sure a Texan), a proud former MARSOC Raider, and founder/CEO of Shadow Company. If u ask me he is an anti-hero. He is a blind patriot (like Shepard) who was tired of the gov red tape and wanted to make some cash doing what he loves to do. He doesn't see his own actions as evil, but "necessary" for the "greater good in the name of God, and country." If those actions get him paid, even better.
@Deathmare2359 ай бұрын
How is he a patriot if he’s a mercenary
@TheHuntsman5709 ай бұрын
@@Deathmare235 a "patriot" is defined as someone who vigorously supports his or her nation etc etc. Notice how I said "blind patriot?" What i meant by that was, someone who's views are blurred/skewed or simply following orders "blindly" in the name of loyalty to the country. Doing things that go outside the lines of morality in their own belief of what patriotism is. Gen Shepard is a blind patriot. Doing what HE feels is right and justified to defend the US, even if by illegal or immoral means (as shown by his actions in both MW2 games). As I mentioned according to his bio, Com Graves is a proud former MARSOC Raider, who formed Shadow Company. IMO, he formed the company to get paid doing what loves to do...fighting in the name of the US. While being a mercenary, u can avoid a lot of the "red tape" that comes with waging war for such (just ask Black Water). With that said, (again imo) it seems to me that he's a proud vet, who left the red tape behind, formed his security company, and found himself working with/for someone who had the same ideology as him. He then simply just followed orders in the sake of what he felt was the right thing for the nation. Those missiles were being shipped to fight against our biggest threat in the Middle East, Iran. In MW3 they are shown to be given to Farah who has become a budding ally in said region. There is no mention he contracted outside of the US, against the US, or for anyone else beside Sheppard. So to me, he comes off as a "blind" patriot who now gets paid to do what he loves, all while his vison is blurred. There are plenty of accounts of such things occurring throughout history and there is no reason to believe his loyalties go beyond the US just because he is a merc.

There was another video here on YT explaining why Graves's actions were justified and had good reasons not to trust Alejandro. Also, Ghost and Soap drew first blood. Ghost literally had no problem killing a Shadow Operator, whom he considered an ally just minutes ago. It makes me think that the SAS Guys are literal psychopaths and Graves may be one of the most level-headed and sanest persons in the series. I used to like Ghost and Captain Price, but after watching this video and the other video I mentioned, Graves is my favorite character. I also think that Graves is loosely based off Erik Prince, one of the founding members of Black Water. Both headed a PMC and had special operations background (Prince was a Navy SEAL and Graves was apparently a Marine Raider, according to cod wiki).

Yeah, I think he’s technically telling the truth about his orders against TF 141. I would guess that Shepard wanted them eliminated outright. 141, Los Vaqueros, and everyone in between. Graves gave them all a chance to walk away unharmed. He thanked them for their service, told them to simply leave the gate, and even said “Let’s not do this” when Ghost became confrontational. And as you said, he didn’t kill Los Vaqueros, he detained them. In that sense, yes he did not act on Shepard’s orders.

Graves is simply a Mercenary (and therefore guided mostly by the money he's paid for the job he's hired to do) so he's guided solely by the situational ethics of each mission. As a soldier (or those that have to be involved in, or experience horrendous and horrific events as part of job/duties) you have to learn to compartmentalize or lose your sanity. For Mercenaries that compartmentalization takes on entirely new levels. So Graves is neither good, nor evil. He's mainly a tool (mechanism) utilized by the one paying his way.

He is classic d&d neutral evil. A mercenary who is it in for themselves and loyal to the highest bidder

@Deathmare235 When he isn't loyal to the bad guys, the bad guys aren't the highest bidder or are diametrically opposed to him.

@@Deathmare235you could argue Shepherd is a bad guy. Sure he had good intentions to Urzikstans but then again, he ordered the blue on blue incident, basically ordered the death of 141, and also lied to congress (denying the order he gave at the gate) which is in a way lying in a court of law.

@@ThePawsketeer who tf cares about congress also he technically never ordered the blue on blue incident just told 141 to leave, I wouldn’t be surprised if the entire time he was thinking that with his conversation with price, thinking price going after him and graves were just threats and not that graves tried to kill them
