Warm water + shampoo then warm water + conditioner then cold water rinse has yielded best results for me since I was a teenager. For some reason, it also helps my scalp, which also get scaly if I don't do the cold water rinse.

Warm water is usually much harder because it comes from your hot water heater, where a lot of chemistry happens with those Ca and Mg ions, dramatically increasing their concentration. This deposits on your skin and results in the dryness

I have wavy hair and use 2-in-1 shampoo every other day, except on weekends, when I just let it be. I've noticed that waiting longer between washes leads to wavier waves, especially if I brush with a wave comb and gently hand twist my hair while still wet and allow to air dry. I do occasionally apply extra conditioner, but my major problem is my skin tends to break out with conditioners, and I'd honestly prefer flatter/frizzier hair over itchy/bumpy skin any day.

Another thing to consider is your shower water itself! Some places, especially cities, have "hard water" which can make your hair dryer and more prone to an oily scalp. One thing to combat this is a shower filter-- but a cheaper option is to do a quick rinse of lukewarm water in your sink after your shower. This kind of locks in the products with a healthier water option. It has made my fine hair shiny, soft, and thick!

I have really thick hair for a caucasian person, like a 3b or 3c. I've always had an oily scalp with dry hair until recently when I watched a video explaining what I could be doing wrong. I forget which KZbinr said this, he's a bald hairstylist, but he said to stop conditioning your scalp, especially if you have bad dandruff or have an extra oily scalp. AND, he recommended the classic shampoo twice method, and if you use shower conditioner, don't use leave-in conditioner and vise versa. SO, once a week-ish, I would shampoo my hair twice in one shower and apply leave-in conditioner every morning, avoiding putting the conditioner on my scalp. This really works for me - my hair has been the best it's ever been.

As someone with long hair that's fairly dry in the mids to ends and extremely oily at the roots, I do not let conditioner anywhere near my scalp. I used 2-in-1s when I was a younger teenager until a stylist finally convinced me I needed to be washing with both separately for my hair type and I will never forget the advice she gave me. I only use shampoo on my scalp and the ponytail area. Basically massage into a lather and then come that lather through the first inch or two of my hair, right where my fist closes when gathering my hair into a ponytail. When I rinse my hair, the lather running down to my ends is enough to get the rest clean. Then I condition from the other side of that ponytail area all the way down! The shampoo washes what it's really needed for without fully striping down the ends those oils will never reach again, and the conditioner moisturizes and protects everything that is not already getting all it needs from the natural oils.

I always knew I had dry hair so once I tried the hot and cold method I swore by it, but couldn't understand why my hair still wasn't as moisturized as I wanted so I included a leave in conditioner but nothing changed until I heard about hair Porosity. Hair Porosity has three levels low, medium, and high. It identifies how open your hair cuticles or "scales" are. By using the *cup test I discovered I had low Porosity hair meaning my "scales" were very closed and couldn't obtain moisture unless they were opened by warm water, so I ditched the cold water and continued with the leave in conditioner and my hair was finally what I always dreamed it'd be. Plus knowing your hair Porosity means you can learn what oils work best for your hair, Hint: Coconut oil is low porosity's enemy 😤 Now this doesn't mean the hot and cold method doesn't work, it just works better for someone with high Porosity hair because their "scales" are wide open and struggle to close. This matters because if they're always open then the moisture will just wash away. I encourage everyone to find out what their hair type and Porosity is to create the best hair care routine that best suits your needs. Happy learning ❤️ *The cup test is a method used to identify hair Porosity. Get a clear cup and fill it with lukewarm water. Then place a strand of hair in the cup. Make sure it doesn't stick to the edges and is fully submerged. Wait five minutes to view results. If the hair strand is at the top you have low Porosity, middle means medium Porosity, and bottom means high Porosity.

Regarding the long hair feeling dry without a conditioner- it's possible that you are just washing it way to often! A few years ago I watched a video from a doctor who said that the reason your hair "dry out" so fast after shower is because you don't let the natural oils to build up & do their thing before you wash them all again. And as so, the doctor warned from washing hair every day, and said that you need to wash only every other 2-3 days. That way you let the natural hair oils to build up & smooth your hair other those 2-3 days, while not leaving it for long enough to make your hair greasy. Washing every day would prevent the oil buildup, leaving it to dry out more often and force you to add moisturizing in yourself to cover up on it.

This is definitely true for my hair, I can't wash it everyday or it gets super dry and brittle and frizzy. I think using heat to dry and/or style your hair makes a difference too. The only thing I use is head and shoulders shampoo twice during the shower (I've tried other brands and this one works best). For context my hair is straight, shoulder lenght.

I would love to see Style Theory test no shampoo hair care too. I used to wash and condition my hair every day because my hair got greasy so quickly. Then during the pandemic lockdown, after binging a lot of practical anthropology stuff on youtube, I decided to try medieval European hair care for a lark since it wasn't as if anyone was going to see if it didn't work out. It turns out that washing with just water and using a fine toothed comb to remove any dirt and pull my natural oil down to the ends of my hair is the best hair care solution for my hair. Four years later, I'm still doing it, my hair is the softest it's ever been, and I only need shampoo about once every two months once the hair becomes saturated and can't absorb any more oil. And it would probably be even less often if I had long hair instead of short, cause there'd be more hair there to do the absorbing.

I tend not to use conditioner due to my short hair; only shampoo or 2 in 1 products. I feel like conditioner just makes my hair oily. While trying out the hot and cold method, I noticed that my hair is less oily and it has become softer. Another thing I noticed is that the conditioner I had used to try out the method contained an alternative to quats. So maybe that is why my hair felt less oily. I started the Hot/cold method when I first read about it years ago. The cold shower really isn’t that bad, especially if you take a really, really hot shower first. I enjoy the extra clean feeling from a basically scalding hot shower, then bring my body temp back down to normal with a cold rinse right before I step out. Feels great. And my hair seems to really like it too.

I used to have terrible dandruff and oily hair and used only anti-dandruff shampoo and a conditioner. Somewhere I heard that using the anti-dandruff shampoo actually increased the natural oil output because my head was trying to compensate for the washed away oils. I switched to conditioner only, no shampoo, and for 2-3 weeks my head was _CRAZY_ greasy, even with daily showers, but after that, the dandruff went away and the natural oil levels settled down, and now I mostly use only a conditioner to wash and my hair remains clean and soft and natural. It's also important to note that conditions (heh) can change your hair needs. As told in the video, hair length is a factor, but your hair needs/type can also change due to age, or products used (for example, a mishap during hair dying "fried" my hair, rendering it frizzy, elastic when wet and brittle when dry. I usually don't _need_ conditioner, but while that hair was still uncut, it was needed if only to be able to _wash_ it without it matting like fleece)

Also, I’d say that it also depends on what products you’re using. I’m particularly into more Asian hair care (as I’m Asian) and I noticed that for Japanese hair products, they tend to have more of an oil base. When using even the sample shampoo hair and conditioner in the hotels in Japan, my hair was significantly less frizzy and coarse. However, I should make it known that I do have Asian hair, and thus this isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. I’ve heard that Japanese hair care might not work as well for Europeans, since there are less hair wash days between compared to East/SE Asia

I have waist-length, curly hair, and I've done all these and more. My hair does have a better effect with the hot and cold method with conventional products (less noticeable with natural ones), but my hair actually does better with more natural products, especially a quality hair oil to put on my hair ends after I wash. I can get away with no conditioner if I'm careful with the oil distribution, but skipping the oil - even with conditioner - is definitely subpar. I think only shoulder-ish length and longer will see an effect from that though because I didn't have to be nearly as careful with hair care when my hair was a touch above my shoulders. I prefer to put the oil on my hair after it has dried to evenly damp. It still helps if I put it on other times, but best results are evenly damp but not dripping.

I have fairly short and somewhat wavy hair that gets greasy pretty quickly, and find that conditioner just makes my hair greasy faster rather than softer even if I put it on the ends and fully wash it out. My hair doesn't really seem to get dried out with only shampoo, so I generally avoid conditioner products. I do use conditioner on my extensions though, since they seem to get frizzy if I don't use it on them, unlike my natural hair. I do only wash my hair every other day though, so I suspect I might need conditioner if I washed my hair every day.
@oreoslush
@oreoslush Ай бұрын
Yeah since you have short hair conditioner isn’t really needed. I’d suspect why your hair gets greasy often is because you wash every other day. It’s not recommended to wash every day so I’d go longer in between washes. When you wash often your hair over compensates because your natural oils are stripped, and it creates more oils and grease in return.

But this video doesn’t standardise methods for everything which makes it harder to actually know what the reason for a bad result was, like whether you leave the conditioner in for a few minutes before washing, and whether when you wash the conditioner out, wash until you can’t actually feel any conditioner, which helps a lot if you have more oily hair.

Hair masks to recover from things like coloring, and a few spritzes of natural moisturizers after drying my hair and it's healthier than in my entire life.
