If anyone doubts that its performance art just watch the video of him hitting his mouth on a microphone. Its pure comedic timing and if you watch close he prepares his mouth to hit it then immediatly recovers and grabs the microphone. Perhaps he started out wanting to be legit but realized the disaster artist approach would keep him in some sort of spotlight.
