It really makes me happy to see a new generation of game developers whose entire motivation boils down to "you ruined my favorite game, so I'm going to make my own version." Coromon is so cool, it reminds me old pokemon games. But with a upgrade in a lot of aspects. You can feel the love in the Coromons itself, soundtracks, story and even minigames. I love the Art and Graphics!!

2:56 I do love when fantasy and sci-fi converge like this within a story, it shows you can have a vast universe set beyond the boundaries of the initial setting you're set in. Reminds me of how Dragon Ball started out as a fantasy adventure series before expanding into sci-fi and then melded the two much later and seemlessly, so it's cool to see a monster catching setting experiment with this premise

3:40 Does no one remember Fossil Fighters? You fend off against alien invaders quite explicitly in that one. The Dinaurians have their home destroyed, and start the process to make earth a habital living space for their race. I know it wasn't that popular of a series and Frontier killed this infant franchise, but I didn't think it was this forgotten.

I admit my biggest concern for Coromon was that it would try to be old school Pokemon but do little to address those early problems which is what killed TemTem dead for me. While I do like the idea of customizing stats I'm not so sure I'm a fan of having shinies being tied to a perfect coromon. Granted I dislike hunting for a "perfect" mon to begin with and prefer to just build up the one I catch from the get go like how it is in SMT V or PL: A Grits. Not ideal, but I can honestly work with it as I'm not quote on quote "hardcore" player of most monster taming games. I do like the idea of having puzzles in a game which is something I do deeply miss from older Pokemon games, so that is a good enough hook for me and the bonus is that it feels like that you have a purpose outside of just being a PC in the world like you know it being your job in this game which I'm always happy to have going for me. Gives me better motivation to continue the story and helps to mask the hump that a lot of monster training tropes are present. A lack of a Post-game isn't too much a deal breaker for me as most don't really hold too much of an appeal for me and I can take or leave most if just ignore it entirely. I'll keep an eye out whenmore is added and good on them for making it a free update. All in all I'll have to play the game myself, but I say that through this review my initial worries have been somewhat soothed. So may pick this up when I tackle my backlog a bit. Thanks Ed.

@Mystic Everything in the game just felt really sluggish and I didn't get much of a sense of purpose to actually go out and explore this world other than "Welp you're old enough to do this now so yeah go on git and scat!" Plus your rival just feels like being a jerkass because he can be a jerkass. Like instinct feels like there is some pre heel face turn Silver but I had the sinking sensation he is meant to emulate Blue who wasn't *that* stuck up. Nose in the air and a bit smug but not high off his own fumes. Then the actual training itself is *fine* it serves its purpose but it didn't wow me. I will acknowledge that I only stuck with it for about eight hours, but the game never felt like it really opened up and became interesting and I was ho humming and thinking "I should probably get back to my heartgold nuzlocke" This next thing isn't related to the original point, but I thought I should mention this. There were times I got slapped with trainer tems with unreasonably high level for the tems I had at the time. On one hand I don't mind this as I figured it was times when the game was going to start opening up and it really didn't. I didn't feel I was rewarded for playing cleverly or even efficently and the fight became a slog I was just happy to have done and over with. After being disappointed there wasn't anything to do at the school other than some simple side quests I sloughed my way to where the first gym was supposed to be, find out I had to hunt down the first gym leader and the thought of more wandering through trainer battles and wild Temtems killed any interest in playing the game myself cold. I don't mind watching folks that know what their doing play it but I have little to no desire to play the game any further at this point.

@Mystic That's an incredible way to boil down my point to the bare bones. I wish I didn't see it coming, but its the kind of answer I get all the time. I get that many monster taming games more or less follow similar threads, but not all of them do it equally. With TemTem it doesn't do a good job of masking going through the motions so I was taken out of it several times. In SMT: Strange Journey the atmosphere it builds up in the opening hour before you even get into the game proper and I can go back to that over and over for that point alone. As for the difficulty I can respect that its the point of it, but TemTem for as long as I stuck with it did not do it in a satisfying nor fun way. There were times it was easy that Tems just fell over and then suddenly they just throw a high level beat stick at you. Like I never got much out of the stamina or charging attacks which while intriguing ideas didn't feel they were implemented well enough that would have me interested in experimenting more with it which is what I meant by the game opening up. If the rival opens up more later than I'll choose to believe you, I'm not particularly interested in him after that first encounter. Same with the story I'll choose to believe you, but a lot of folks confuse mature content with mature story and game never gave me much of a sense of that.

@Mystic I would argue paying 40 dollars and playing the game for 8 hours is more than a chance. Also as previously stated I agree with the insight that the that my complaints could be leveled at any monster taming game. My issue with the statement is that in my eyes TemTem does a poor job of minimizing its slog of an early game. The characters are not interesting/endearing enough to motivate me to find out more. The battling while it as an interesting wrinkle with attacks that interact with each other you don't get enough temtem (at least for me) that makes it worth experimenting with. And when I refer to beatsticks it was outside those tutorial fights like one that despite getting a sleep off, debuffing its attack three times and raising defense of a pokemon that taunted it twice it bit through it easily. It was not a crit either. So like what is the point of using the tools available to me if the game seems to flat out ignore it? By the time I sloughed up the hill side to where the first gym was I was at the end my interest and when the the game went "oh gym leader isn't here, gotta go find'em" that was my I'm outta here moment. If the game is this bevy of depth, strategy, tactics and difficulty I believe you. In my experience when I played it TemTem does not do a good enough job to keep me invested to get to that point. Games in monster taming that I do enjoy playing get me over the usual early game grind by either having characters that I like being around and/or a hook that keeps me around long enough so when the game itself really opens up I am invested enough to dive deeper into it.

@Mystic I should have been clear I meant the variety of moves you get at that early point was lacking to try out more combinations of synergy attacks so it wasn't piquing my interest. That's what I get for making a post on a phone at like 3 am. I don't know if I'm up to give TemTem a second chance, but I will acknowledge the period I played was July 2020 after what I think is its first major island update. I will also give maybe having a co-op partner will make the experience more tolerable and I have a good friend that does like the game.

Great review! I'm maybe halfway through the game myself, having picked it up during this Steam Winter Sale and loving it so far. Your video just happened to pop up! The game really does remind me of older Pokemon games for the GBA/DS for all the right reasons. This was the right game for me personally as I was looking for another alternative to Pokemon after finishing the story in Temtem. The music is so damn good, I'll be honest in that using that particular battle track as your background music for your review was a tad bit distracting, haha. I am a huge fan of pixel art, especially since this style matches the old Pokemon games so well! The combat system is somewhat of a blend of Pokemon and Temtem, although it lacks Temtem's strategic choices in favor of just its stamina management. I'm in favor of this system over Pokemon's Power Point system, although IMO Coromon doesn't really utilize it to its full potential. I think Temtem uses stamina with a bit more strategy since you have a second Temtem on the field at all times, while Coromon plays it extremely safe. I think there is room for further improvement, but what we have from these games are absolutely solid ideas and a good gameplay loop. The only thing I didn't really like so far is when you run into situations where your Coromon is stuck fighting 1v2 or 1v3. But overall, I enjoyed the boss fights and the gameplay so far. I found it a bit funny how Coromon tries to justify your job as a "Battle Researcher", so you are dispatched out on your adventure instead of just being a ten year old kid, given a pokedex and thrown out of your house to go on an adventure. As far as endgame goes, for a lot of players like myself, we really don't stick around very long if there aren't new areas or story added to continue the journey onwards. That's not a failing on a game. All stories will end at some point. It is the time that we spend enjoying the journey with our monster pals that truly matters. Shine Bright!

I got this 4 days ago and just finished it today. I was not expecting to get as addicted as I did. Loved the designs, there was never one that I really disliked. Never one that felt out of place imo even with ones I was not a big fan of. Felt ending was rush but considering this was the first game I was totaly content with it. Still room for improvement and did have my fare share of frustrations with game design but all in all loved the experience. P.S. Nibblegar best sharkboy

Reminds me of Monster Sanctuary ever heard of that one thats an indie game developed by Team17 who did the Worms games which are a turn based strategy game even Monster Sanctuary as that is based on the pixelated Pokémon from Red, Blue and Yellow up to Black 2 and White 2 versions.

Sounds like a good foundation for them, looking forward to play it. Hopefully they add a speed up option in the future, since the speed seems to be a common criticism. Also I think they could address the limitations of the Potential system discouraging the use of the lower rarity color scheme by making it so higher rarity color schemes can switch their appearance to the lower rarity ones in PvP

I play both original Pokémon and Coromon and I must say that I'm very impressed with the new generation of "Pokémon"-like games. At times I feel that Coromon has more up to date mechanisms that the classic Pokémon games don't have. If anybody would like to play something like Pokémon I 💯 recommend this game!!!

Great review. how long would the game be for doing all content? i've played 2 games tagged as "creature collector" Nexomon Extinction(35hrs) and Monster Sanctuary(50hrs). I enjoyed both. I enjoyed Nexomons customization for new game+ function(Wish Monster Sanctuary had this function). Large amount of monsters but not as diverse in terms of monster skills. I enjoyed Monster Sanctuary' team based monsters, skills and customization(Wish Nexomon had this flexiblity), fantastic mix and match and they have alternative light and dark versions of the monster to reflect skills and stats even though their monster count is way less than Nexomons.

I've been out of the Pokemon loop for quite a while now and after Sword/Shield genuinely shocked me with how low the quality standard of that series appears to have fallen, I almost gave up on the whole subgenre. The game had some crashing issues at launch but they were quickly ironed out in a patch. This game plays like a polished nintendo game now on steam at least. It's nowhere near the awful feeling of monster crown's jittery gameplay. edit: I suck at typing

I really liked this game. I never finished it, as I got stuck needing to do some heavy exp grinding for my team at a certain point. However before I needed to do that grind, I was progressing steadily (sometimes slowly, sometimes fast) and doing amazing. Absolutely love a lot of the unique mechanics. Plus there are plenty of things vaguely similar to mechanics in other Monster Taming games. Surprisingly, the mechanics are not only things I've noticed in Pokemon, but also other Monster Taming Games as well that made things that aren't in Pokemon. The game is so very good and I do reccomend it.

the only thing i am iffy about is the potential system. you touched on it by pointing out how it emphasizes using a perfect mon over the alternatives. for the casual player, this doesn't effect anything, but for competitive it just makes the scene boring. eventually there will come a time where you see nothing but perfect mons there because using anything else is just crippling yourself. i definitely prefer pokemon's way of handling it where there are no actual benefits to being shiny. it means you aren't weaker for not grinding for a shiny and regardless of stats, you will be seeing both standard and shiny forms in the competitive scene. with coromon, you are severely punished for not grinding for a perfect.

On switch you will see perfect mon teams day one. With it being hacked and all. Just like pokemon on switch. Edit: I do agree with you, coromon shiny system is by far the worst when compared to other games and pokemon.

That's a good point about competitive but the fact is that everybody will use perfect mons and basically nullify that disadvantage. In game you can actually limit the mons u catch, like only catching one per area or one per area except potents/perfects. To me that is actually perfect. I'm loving it so far.

@@hilomatrixhd It's literally the worst. It's not a shiny system, it's a stat reflection system. Everyone who has the same stats has the "shiny". By default if you want the best mon Stat wise you are forced into having the "shiny". These are not alternate colors for the mon as they the only color the mon can be when having those stats. That's like saying light or dark forms in monster sanctuary are shinies, or burmy or vivilions in pokemon are shiny. They are just different forms.

Today is the day! I almost took the day off to play, but that would've been hell at work XD I'm just sad that the odds of upgrading a potent to perfect are improved (for 19 or less) or nerfed (if you have a 20, it's not longer a 100% chance to be perfect, more like 1/25 based on what Marcel said). But I'm so hyped!!!!!!!

The Game seems great and all but... Why Coromon of all names? Copyright is still an issue... You know, because Koromon does exist as a Digimon so it is very possible that the name doesn't last much once it becomes very popular in the world

I'm having a major problem with the Coromon game on my SWITCH LITE. I'm stuck at the point where I have to assign the gauntlet's stink module function to the secondary action button . The game won't let me do it so I'm stuck at that point in the game and can't get past it. Am I the only one thay has this problem? I think they need to patch this. Could someone please tell me if they enciuntered the same problem and if there is a solution. Thank you.

The game support cross save so you can use your save data of the pc versión on the Switch versión of coromon.
