I think probably the biggest reason DbD is ahead of the competition is because it isn't tied to a singular IP. Literally any horror franchise can make an appearence in the game. In TCM for example, you can only ever expect characters & maps etc inspired by that IP.

This. DbD is mid at best, it's no where near peak. Even The Breakers was better. But since anything can pop up, it can fortnite itself to life forever.

I’ve been saying this forever and people still try arguing with me that Texas Chainsaw is going to overthrow DBD. I tell these people “Texas chainsaw will die the same was Friday the 13th and Evil Dead did, because they can’t really branch out to other horror characters. They’re limiting themselves to a single horror franchise which only will bring in a small audience, while DBD can bring in well over a dozen different horror franchise fans and now, even actors fans.”

As someone who doesn't play DbD but watches the gameplay for fun; from a viewers perspective it feels engaging to watch and be on the edge of my seat. The other games... not so much. I might play the game myself one day, who knows but the game is really fun to watch. It's cool to see all the unique/ different builds with the perk system and the single alone threat coming in towards the survivors is fun to watch from the killer side or survivor side. For TCM; it's not fun watching the killer or survivor. It's too boring with one side having all the power to survive easily with little to no actual teamwork.

Easily the worst problem this game has, imo. It sucks on both sides. As a killer, it is the most frustrating and agonizing thing you can have to deal with, and as a survivor, it sucks having your whole team screw around and get in trouble like idiots when you just wanna play the game normally. Huge immersion killer.
@tomramecin6995

@@RemOmniThey always get stopped in the movies though. I'd say the killer getting absolutely everyone is not the rule in those horror movies DbD refers to. So to me it's perfectly representative of what I like in those movies. The monster always get it in the end and it's often pretty stupid the way they do. The way to get rid of Freddy is actually simply not to be afraid of him so, survivors trolling is exactly that to me :)
@RemOmni

@@tomramecin6995 Sure but then that would be a completely different objective, if the objective was to stop the killer before he kills everyone that's completely different then having to complete generators to escape, the problem with DbD is the goals don't align.

Well its because no other game really wants that god awful sweaty try hard community.. DBD literally has the worst community of any game, filled with alot of the stupider, sweaty, tryhards who would wear sweatbands to play a game of Clue. Its so pointless to pay attention to the sweaty tryhards when balancing something. The DBD tryhards have absolutely ruined almost everything about the game, they want anything interesting nerfed into the ground, because tactics or losing bad. They don't want anything to happen that might ruin their 398th win for the day.

And for F13, sure, it was possible for scenarios where coordinated survivors could try to bully a Jason, particularly one who wasn't super experienced. But if the Jason player knows what they're doing, it was honestly far less of a problem than most killer-bullying in DbD. That's because the "bully" items in F13 were very limited and most of them had counter-play. Even the dreaded pocket knife was counter-able and a good Jason player was usually able to suss out when a player had one. In 700 hours, I was only ever "unmasked" about a half dozen times and the counsellors never once actually managed to kill me. Yeah, F13 had plenty of bugs and wasn't the most polished or balanced game but it was a whole lot of fun, especially with friends and I miss it dearly.

This may sound a bit weird, but whenever I feel burnt out from DBD, I go to SCP Secret Laboratory. It's another asymmetrical horror game, but not really in the usual sense. There's 3 teams, SCPs, MTF, and Chaos Insurgency. The way you win is very complicated, but nobody pays attention to that since it's more of a result screen to show you what happened in the game and less of an objective to persue. This leads players to lean on goofing off, and role playing. It feels like a polished GMod gamemode. I know it's not the typical DBD style of game, but it's a nice change of pace for me. The biggest hurdle is trying to find a good server to play on

DBD can't die as long as it's number 1 of Asym horror. The only ways of its' death are BHVR and A new competitor rising above it but, that's not likely due to people going back to what's safe and familiar such as DBD, not to mention all of the licenses.

Fun Fact: Another balance issue that was in Friday the 13th was that Jason could only pinpoint the location of scared campers, therefore if a camper wanted to hold the game hostage they could run off into the woods at the start of the match, going where there is nothing scary to see, and crouch down in a bush to hold the match hostage potentially forever.

I think there’s been a couple of times DbD was at least sort of close to dying. The most recent was obviously before Alien got announced. Knight, Skull Merchant, and the Singularity were all varying degrees of disappointing and Nick Cage was just another survivor. Hype and interest in the game was very low and I truly do think that DbD would’ve been on it’s last leg if we didn’t get Alien or something just as beloved and popular. BHVR is clutch af and every time the game’s truly suffering they end up fixing the issue and then some.

Games that try to make "Everything" viable that continuously updates like Dota, and etc will always have an edge. @larsliamvilhelm Their biggest mistake was balancing the game around perks, if they had focused on balancing the core game, perks wouldn't be a necessary advantage to win and then you have the RNG factors of the game, at that rate it's mostly luck. You also have to remember not everybody has the luxury of buying every single dlc, and the shrine at the best of times doesn't have good perks that are useful. SWF argument isn't valid because that's a straight disadvantage and is not intended by any means, but it's also not a ban offence. The game may be a better state than before but it's still nowhere near balanced to be considered competitive by any means.

Result: complete slaughter. If I play family, the other 2 are level 00 and 1, and all 4 survivors are level 8-10. Result: 2-4 people escape in under 5 minutes. Plus, if 3 survivors escape, there’s a 99.9% chance that the last one will DC. Games are over too quickly, and take forever to queue into. I gave the game 2 weeks, got bored and left.

There's probably even 5 people that think Killer Klowns from Outer Space will do it. The biggest problem, from a survivor perspective, is that so much time is spent doing gens. Unfortunately, there aren't more interesting ways to get out or other things to do. It just feels a bit incomplete or too little. It has only marginally changed in almost a decade now. For ex. TCM crew did many of these things better and Behavior should learn from them. Not saying TCM is perfect by any means but it did a good job shaking up the genre. Time will tell if it can fix matchmaking among its many other problems and keep up.

VHS always makes me sad to think about. It had so much potential, but was horribly mismanaged. The toxic positivity from the playerbase didn't help either. Any criticisms were dismissed, and people acted like everything was fine despite it clearly not. I think if the game didn't come out with such glaring issues (which the launch was heavily delayed for, mind you, which added to the massive waiting just to play the game), and was more casual friendly, the game would at least be alive still.

While not necessarily a "revival", Video Horror Society is still playable with a mod made by the community that redirects traffic to a server run by the mod creators. While cosmetics and progression from your time playing before are gone, the mod server unlocks all cosmetics and perks. The server, due to one digit number of players still playing doesnt have matchmaking but allows for peer to peer custom games to be able to be created. So for the current time being, anyone with VHS in their library is still able to play customs if they desire to do so.

the best thing about dbd is that along with an extremely simple core mechanics every game is not like the other and you don't know what to expect. you can have 9 routine matches and the 10th will make you feel like something to remember had happened. it's variable and fun. I can compare only to evil dead the game, which had cool mechanics but pretty soon you'll notice that pretty much every game goes the same scenario and there is not much you can change.

Great video! For me, Dbd is like an ex-girlfriend. We started dating back in 2017 when Bubba released and it was great, but not perfect. I remember old DS and DH. But we broke up when it decided to give survivors speed meta. As if the enduring meta wasn't bad enough and yes, I used to main killer. These really fast survivors gave me severe hacker flashbacks so we broke up around 3 months ago. But I still stalk the game on social media, hoping for a change and I've seen great things like the anti camping mechanic but the FoV slider and an improved UI for killers is still missing. But I would consider coming back only if the speed meta is nerfed (MFT+Hope). In the meantime, I'm enjoying No Man's Sky.

I've ultimately decided to largely quit the horror asymm genre, mostly because the games within it that I enjoy all die out and the one that hangs around (DbD) has almost no fun left to it for me. I haven't played TCM and I don't think I will...because I'm not convinced to invest time and money into another asymm only to see it fade away after a year and everybody start pushing DbD again. Same thing with Killer Klowns. I'm a fan of the film and I love a lot of the ideas that have been revealed about it...but in this fickle generation, and as evidenced by all the other failed attempts, I just don't trust a niche concept like that to hold a larger community's attention for long enough to be worth my time. So, I'll just go back to the many, many other games that are calling for my attention and will likely just have to leave the horror asymm in the past as a once memorable but now obsolete slice of my gaming history.

Yo skrump,Comp Friday the 13th player here. you ran into a bully squad in the compilation you showed there,i faced a lot of the people you actually ran into in my lobbies aswell (maybe you ran into me at some point in the video,that's quiet possible) so lemme just help with f13 real quick,in case you ever wanna touch the game again after those rounds. the most important part of jason are obviously his abilities and yes they take way longer than 3 rounds to understand fully. so i will just give you a few tips here. you can't just morph to every point of the map,the game has Morph spawns and jason will teleport to the nearest one,you can actually memorize them cause they are always the same,making them a double sided blade (my team likes to trap the morph spawns as counselor to get jason stuck there) But as jason you can learn them to actually morph grab people. sense is the obviousl ability which really doesn't need a lot of explaining. Shift is the 2nd most important ability after morph. You don't Ever wanna short shift (enter shift and instantly leave it cause you think you're in grab range) instead you wanna use the full duration of the shift,the counselor will try to dodge it and burn stamina in the process,making them a easier target later. even if you don't get the shift grab on them,they now wasted at least half their stamina and will be easy prey. stalk will make your terror radius disappear and also help with jasons hearing,counselor noises are louder. stalk will have a longer duration if you stand still and not move. But the most important part of stalk is that it will cause a static to appear on the counselors screen,the same static appears when jason uses his shift and morph ability. often the counselor thinks you shift so they will just start running around to dodge it even tho you aren't even shifting,then you can activate your shift and get a counselor that has no stamina left. the 5th ability is rage,which is pretty much a buff to all other abilities (increases the range of sense and lowers the cooldown of all abilities) it also makes you immune to melee weapon stuns,flare gun stuns and firecracker stuns+ it allows you to break doors instantly. Now the most important part about Jason combat is the combat stance which you activate by pressing C. if you are in combat stance (will call is cs from now on cause lazy me) jason will lock onto counselors,making it easier to get a hit off. If you hold right mouse button while in cs,you are immune to melee weapon stuns even if you don't have the rage activated yet. breaking doors in cs is also wayyyyyyy faster than with the long asf animation. Now what you have to know is that some jasons deal more slash damage than others. jasons with +weapon strength will deal 30 damage while jasons without it will only deal 20. if a counselor loses 50% of his health,they will start limping. a throwing knife ALWAYS deals 30 damage. what advanced players like to do is combo-ing counselors,we slash,then throw a knife,then slash again,this will 100% make the counselor limp. if other counselors are around to save in case of a grab,you just go into cs and slash them,if the counselor nearby goes for a save,you block the hit in cs and then finish the job. there is obviously a lot more to the game,i have over 2.6k hours in f13 and still play every day, someone on my team has over 10k hours and still learns. the game is wayyyy more complicated then what you showed here,but i don't blame you,it seems like its easy to understand when in reality it's the total opposite. also what you wanna know is that ping matters way more than in a lot of other games when it comes to combat,so you wanna host your own lobby if you play in pubs to make sure to not have any delay. I hope i could help.

also just a little thing i noticed when watching the video,you went up against cheaters. the game only spawns 3 pocket knives per round,2 in drawers and one at a campfire. so you getting stunned by like 7 of them in one round is Literally impossible. so at least one of the players you went up against actively spawned pks in using cheats.

i've seen a few people mention it in the comments here but i wanted to bring up a few points about identity v myself. i'm honestly shocked at how many dbd players don't give the game a try. in my opinion it's balanced a lot better and despite the learning curve for the different character abilities it doesn't require the same kind of grind that dbd does. it also has a thriving competitive community that i think a lot of players want from dbd. the only things that i think are working against it for dbd fans are: - being aimed at mobile players and having a less than ideal pc port - theming being less slasher and more tim burton (and collabs that reflect this) - substantial gameplay style differences that just feel wrong; best example probably being how camping and tunneling is considered valid and standard practice in identity v - the devs actively not advertising to western audiences (i assume so as not to step on bhvr's toes considering the companies have a great working relationship) it's probably the game with the greatest potential to dethrone dbd and i wish more people would give it a better shot than trying it for an hour, being confused by the controls/mechanics, deciding the game sucks because they can't figure it out, and then quitting for good.
