Is the US $ headed for an inevitable decline and demise as global reserve currency? Could it be replaced by a virtuous new currency? And could this currency be a BRICS initiative? If the global currency debate has you thinking along these lines, take a breath and press play. In Ep 1208 of Cut The Clutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta explains some hard truths.

what a f-in stupid take. I couldn't watch past 3 mins.. Your belief or hypothesis that reserve $ is only bad for those who are odd with US and who US Empire doesn't like is utter moronic, this show how stupid you are and have no clue how currency system works and how financial and economy works. Because of US reserve $, US is able to print $ unlimited in order to save US economy whenever US faces economic downturn like 2008 and 2020. US corporate and ruling class never accepts reality but they just print $ paper out of their problems. You know what means, it means the world has to bear the burden as well, who ever use $, has to bear the burned of US financial decisions. You can buy as much as $ you want and assured that US wont sanction you, it doesn't F-in matter, when US acquired over $32 trillion debt and keep printing, the $ you hold in reserve will depreciate every year, and you have to work more to earn more $ and pay for petrol and all other imports. You stupid, stop talking something you have no clue.

Shekhar ji, you're OK with a fiat currency which is printed out of thin air, pinned to nothing and can bail out US banks (giving 0% interest loans) just by switching on printing machines being a reserve global currency and Indian currency being pegged to USD??? Answer me on this question - Why can't a person working 9-5 after being a post graduate in India own a house in a quarter acre plot by the age of 35? So, you say doing the same work in a western country is of more value than doing the same work in India??? So, you say everyone who gets the opportunity should migrate by hook or by crook??? Since we are not even putting an effort to make life better for our country ppl... Is nationalism all bogus?? If USD is the reserve currency and INR is hooked to it, India can never be the leader of the world and whatever efforts an Indian puts shall be of less and less value. OK, the bottom line is - "If you have a chance, just migrate"... Period!

You sort of missed one important point. De-Dollarization won't happen overnight. It will have to be gradual, or else all countries that are currently holding US Dollar as a forex reserve will have to take large write-offs. In any case, there are many leading indicators of a currency's "fall from grace". Political instability and sustained economic decline are among the top two. Neither is the case with Uncle Sam. Perhaps, China will have to wait for AOC to become "MADAM PRESIDENT".

Yes. Removing USD from reserve currency status is not so simple Pound lost reserve currency status by the end of world war 2 due to the economic collapse as a result of the world war in the year 1945. Pound had become the reserve currency when England defeated the Dutch Empire in the Anglo Dutch war 1784. Hence , confrontation with US navy is inevitable if they have to establish supremacy over USD

SG clearly downplayed the inflationary effects of the dollar on the world. This exported inflation of the US has led to catastrophic effects on the domestic currencies in particular, and the economic system as a whole. There is a reason why Reserve Banks around the world including in Europe, and Turkey (and, India) have increased GOLD Reserves. The reason is US Dollar cannot be trusted anymore. And, gold provides a hedge against the inflationary effects of the US Dollar! It is useful to understand why people are talking about De-Dollarisation, and the US is guilty of many economic failures in many countries. While, alternatives of Yuan, and the Gold standard, are bad in comparison to US Dollar. It is important to acknowledge the reasons for the declining trust in USD.

Russia might be a good friend, but Russia has absolutely nothing to offer on table to India other than some defense equipment (that too can no longer be considered most advanced). India's ambitions can only be achieved by aligning with US, EU, Japan, S Korea and other like minded free developed countries. Who in their right mind would think that the entire group of China, Pakistan, Russia, North Korea, Iran etc can do any good to Indians?

It isn't hyper nationalistic or hyper patriotic. It's common sense. Dollar is going down. Saudi has started trading energy in other currencies. India has started rupee trade with 30+ countries. Xi's china has published paper about decoupling with USA and how a 100$ bill takes only 17 cents to print but takes 100$ worth real commodities from China. It isn't about $ vs yuan. It's about fiat currency vs pegged currency. Just few days back a bill was tabled in US parliament about repegging the $ with gold. The whole US banking system has collapsed. Very good analysis, but what if Turkey, Saudi, Mexico and Iran joins BRICS. Doesn't that change some perspective? $ might not lose its all value in a fort-night, but if its share further erodes even by 10=15%, it will be a challenge to US hegemony. I think it would be good for the world in terms of balancing of power.

I looked at some of those reserves and currency trading charts, plotting share of various currencies over time. What's noticeable is the Euro line just about mirrors the Dollar line, meaning it's the Euro which has benefited most from the decline in the Dollar's share. As for BRICS, that was an idea that has become a fantasy.

1. De Dollarization has been a slow but sure process starting from launch of Euro. But Euro could not displace USD by much. Rise of China as the 2nd biggest economy was expected to launch Yuan as alternative USD but again it did not achieve much so far. 2. Thanks to primacy of USD and power with USA to have unilateral sanctions and block SWIFT system, particularly after Ukraine war along with many countries facing shortage of USD, there is a move to make payments in bilateral currencies like rupee rouble or Sri Lanka rupee with Indian rupee or UAE dirham with Indian rupee. This is viable where trade is more or less balanced or any excess or shortage can be settled in USD or Euro or gold etc. or can be invested in the country profitably. This is now expected to work well while prices for the goods will be referenced in USD itself, directly or indirectly! 3. So USD is nowhere going but ability of USD to blackmail a country will be reduced drastically. If this is called De-dollarization, then it is fine! 4. BRICS currency may come and should be tried. The world hardly used SDRs which was expected to replace USD since long. So was the case with Asian Monetary Units of 1970!! But BRICs currency may perhaps work now. 5. BTW, we should note that as Shekhar talks of de dollarization, he is talking of GDPs of BRICS countries in USD terms only!! But he is right about dogecoin- you are in USD and yet not threatened by USA geo-politics and geo strategies!!

It is not so much about the primacy, but rather, it is lack of transparency of the Chinese system which is preventing it to be the alternative to USD. Beautifully done. I really appreciate Shekhar sir's sarcasm here in mocking the general conversation. People in India are crazy for thumping chests about de-dollarization. They should understand any FDI that's going to be poured into the Indian economy is primarily going to be in USD. THERE IS NO SERIOUS ALTERNATIVE. People should really understand that the strategic relationship with Russia is not a reason to fantasize about BRICS(no matter how many letters are added). India has placed itself beautifully over the past 30 odd years as a salient presence in the Asian continent with ties to the west, north, east and south. Any move like this would terribly shake the strategic advantage for India. P.S. for fans of Russia, Russia has only strategic interests in a relationship with India. They have ideological interests in linking with China. And China is and always will be a geopolitical competitor for India. So it's best to not rock the boat.

Further, and more importantly, there are no two countries in BRICS who trust EACH OTHER! India and China have fought wars among them; nobody trusts Russia at this point. BRICS is a support group with a purpose of its own. We will see "buyer's blocks" & "developing nation blocks" emerge to demand better deals from developed economies. However, it will take several generations of transparent & trustworthy growth before US dominance takes a backseat.

SG Please also tell the world what GOLD RESERVES data has to say, and why Reserve Banks around the world are increasing their gold reserves. Why not just increase US Dollar reserves instead. The reason is the growing distrust on US Dollar, and the world has realized the inflationary effects of trading in US Dollars. It is largely because of FED's response to inflation being PRINTING MORE Money! Something it is likely to happen even now!
@JohnSmith-vn8dm
@JohnSmith-vn8dm Жыл бұрын
The FED has not been printing money these past few years. For the first time in decades M2 is actually DOWN. And interests rates are up, which has strengthened the dollar due to covered interest rate parity (laymen tend to think a "strong" currency is better but this is not necessarily the case, there are both advantages and disadvantages). Most banks around the world have not meaningfully increased gold reserves. Mainly China has, because they want to try to insulate their economy for when they invade Taiwan. If they succeed, you can imagine which countries in their neighborhood will be their next targets.
@pratiush1000
@pratiush1000 Жыл бұрын
@@JohnSmith-vn8dm FED's interest rate rise is less than 2 years old. Their response to the 2008 crisis and the one induced by the lowered supply side during COVID was just 'print more money'. US has been using the Dollar as a tool to subside its ever rising and never ending debt, and misusing it's dominance to export the inflation. The gold reserves have been increased by China, India, Turkey, and even European banks. The data is in the same IMF report that SG is explaining.

@JohnSmith-vn8dm
@JohnSmith-vn8dm Жыл бұрын
The US exports inflation when the dollar strengthens as part of passthrough inflation, but when the US prints money to weaken the dollar it decreases inflation in other countries. There's also the fact that the large demand for dollars also makes US exports less competitive, which is especially good for developing countries that see exports as a path to growth. On the flipside it makes importing to the US cheaper. The dollar being the reserve currency is a double edged sword. People who are pro-US or anti-US just sell you one edge of it. The reality is nobody likes the status quo, but they don't dislike it either, (except for China and Russia).

Fantastic episode SG - I enjoyed this one after a long time. De-dollarization is indeed the talk of town here in USA. But the dollar universe is too vast a gravitational force to escape. THere are technodollars, eurodollars, export/import dollars - so many dollars. However, if most countries start ditching dollars US will be in trouble -- and that transition will take a long time. I dont buy your arguments about BRICS currency about China's hold. They can still issue a currency based on gold/silver - and can be an experiment. If China wants a stable BRICS they will need India - and it might be to India's advantage. For the moment at least.

This gives it access to advanced weaponry system, as demonstrated in Ukraine war Javelin anti-tank missile were able to stop the advanced Russian tanks. Further more USA controls most of the modern institution like World Bank, IMF and the Banking system of the world. US Debt is merely large because US economy is large, and as long as US dollar is the reserve currency it would have no trouble servicing the debt. China on the other hand is an unreliable partner and has never demonstrated a strategic outlook. China should have settled the border dispute with India if it wanted to become a super power but it has instead resorted to street fighting behavior killing Indian soldiers and renaming towns in Arunachal Pradesh.China has taken over several ports in Srilanka and Pakistan when these nations were not able to service the debt, clearly remonstrating a gangster mindset. It is much easier to deal with western nations than dealing with China. India should use this opportunity to get the best deal from USA and western nations which which also where our democratic value align.

You are looking at this incorrectly. You need to look at this in terms of trade and balance of trade. The reason for USD strength is in trade, not reserve. The reserve is a store of wealth and trade contingency. If countries stop using USD in trade, the value of the USD will collapse. The USD will not disappear but just devalues. The proportion of the reserve today is indicator of the popularity of the currency for trade but also a relative value of the currency, which is measured relative to the USD. Consider what will happen if demand of the USD fades, the USD will decrease in value relative to other currencies. You may have the same amount in USD in your reserve but it's relative worth as a proportion will decrease.

Thank you Sekharji for your insightful thoughts. The Euro was made for specifically for a specific market i.e. the Euro zone. There the rich countries like Germany and France still bears the brunt of supporting the Euro, which is very closely linked to the USD. Unlike the Euro, The BRICS countries will be dominated by China, whose sole purpose would be to dominate the trade in their favor at the expense of weaker economies like Russia and Brazil. If India joins the BRICS currency, then China will get a HUGE advantage and will weaken the Indian Rupee. So, beware of Chinese intentions. IMHO, India should never be at the same side as China. I fully understand India’s compulsions to buy cheap oil from Russia during the Ukraine war. This has caused a lot of angst in the Western world. Now, if Russia influences India to be on the same side as China, especially in currencies, then Indian economy will be further weakened by the Chinese. Already India has a negative balance of trade with China.
