One can think of laser power beaming when you want to recharge a drone, or when NASA sends austranauts to Moon! That is too expensive and very in-efficient, with high maintannace costs, and safety issues. So, I have a hard time accepting that it is a useful thing for remote spots in Africa! You need to really have MONEY and it is the last resort to think of! The best lasers have an efficiency of 40%, the best solar cells have an efficiency of 30% on the market! That means you dump 2/3 of your energy IF you have the bests of the bests! Why not giving the folks a portable solar panels, batteries, and small wind turbines and also some LEDs?!
