waterproofer and waterproof membrane against the wall

No matter what type of drain is installed, there will still be wet ground sitting next to the house. Definately needs some type of waterproofing.

Yes, I mentioned that Maya Feliz, who also lives in Portugal, had a worse problem and she got help with attaching a heavy black rubber membrane to the outside of her wall. I believe she waterproofed the stone before the membrane.

Absolutely needs to be rendered then waterproof the wall before laying the gravel and drain. Then afterwards all should be good if you do that gutter and remove that pathway that is a real issue. You will have a few new muscle after all that digging..so glad you got that drill out. Another week and then a huge cleanup…phew what a job, well done.❤

I saw a comment that you should not conect the gutter to the french drain but via an extra pvc pipe. That is good advise. The french drain might not work properly when there's to much water going through. For the connection make a collector with bricks and waterproof cement with the pvc pipe going out in the garden.

Crikey, the house blocks go pretty deep. Here in Canada many years ago I helped my friend Glenn (Misses Glenn wasn't happy for the mess) dig a trench around his house in his backyard because he was getting water leakage in his basement. We only needed to dig 2 walls out. We must have dug at least 3 feet (91cm), it took a few days, but of course we stopped for meals and beers. As kids we always joked that if you dig deep enough then you will hit China. Here in Canada house foundations should be at least 120cm to 180cm deep due to the frost line. We coated the foundation walls with a special tar solution which you paint on and then we attached foam insulation sheets. Do they have such things in Portugal? If no paint solution adheres to the bricks then you may have to attach a thick plastic sheet to the walls. Good to see you always have a smile, well most of the times.

if you don't like the french drain idea (land pipe , backfill with gravel) then maybe render the house leave a 25mm gap - then lay rows of concrete blocks - two rows parallel with the house - with say 150mm gap - render the inner channel with a water proof mix and cover the top with paving slabs (which abut house wall) which will give you a covered drainage channel -its an alterative that will help take water away quickly and let air into base of house wall did your friend - richard was fixing a mini digger for not resolve yet ? keep going anything will be an improvement and plenty of coffee - digging is zen

Lots of water is going to come off the roof into the gutter. I would make sure the gutter collection is directed away from the house and into the garden area separately, it’s own piping, and not into the French drain which is meant for ground water.
@terryk_12 сағат бұрын
ok, tell you what we did putting in a drain in our wonky area, Get a drain pipe the same diameter as your french drain, we drilled a hole the same side as the new pipe in the french drain pipe, you will be putting sealant around the seam now comes the fun part, drill a few holes in the top and side of the NEW drain pipe, lay it in and the important part, put land-scapeing cloth over it so no dirt etc can get into the holes, put gravel around the edges and only a light layer on top, shovel the dirt back in but not too thick, you can even just leave gravel on the top with no dirt, thats what we did and filled holes elsewhere with the extra dirt that did not go around the edges of the new landscape cloth covered pipe, Works like a charm and no more flooded patio. Good Luck

Excellent effort Sir Jasper, I would be happier with a 60 cm trench below the internal floor height and a pipe laid in the trench that took the water from the guttering along the back and fed it down along the boundary line to keep the bushes & trees watered. Then backfilled as with a french drain to draw rainwater away from the waterproofed gable end wall and into the garden.

Such a relief to watch that the jackhammer is going better than the discarded pickaxe ! Your house will soon be called the house behind the hill! Such an amount of soil you’ve already got...Seems that it's in the corner that the most of the moisture is coming from....Hope that you're not too far to end with this beautiful trench ! Very hard work ! Best wishes for a waterproof wall soon, and a pretty efficient drain! Just to laugh, living in the French alps, the temperature is higher in my place ! Always thought that Portugal was sunny..and WARM!😂😂😂😂😂

🎉 Hello again lol...Ok I have seen people glue polystyrene on the outside of their house walls, then they skim it with the appropriate skimmer. SO, polystyrene is kind of water proof, water cannot penetrate it and you will insulate your house against summer heat and winter cold, your house has 0 insulation...2 birds with one stone.😂
@dweamy118 сағат бұрын
I watched Maya Feliz, who also lives in Portugal, in the forest and she had same issues as you. Might be worth checking out her video called '3 girls can stop building things'. At this point she has dug a massive trench, re-rendered the schist walls, put a light layer of cement on the walls and dug out a soak away. She and her volunteers put bitumen on the outside walls before putting in the French drains.

Amazing stamina😮 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼 Please check the morters for water tanks. This might be an idea for you to make a long-term solution. We have used it on several sites and can function very well under a french drain. The material you need for around the pipe is geotextile. Fornthe tank morter, Make the lowest point with normal morter always with angle away from the house, then go over it with few layers with the morter and 1 of mesh for watertanks. After this, you can continue with the finish you choose, like the French drain. Again, this is only an idea that might be usefull for you.😊 To use the lamina mentioned earlier in a comment, not recommended to use asphalt. This will contaminate the garden and life spand is of about 10 years before it starts cracking and leaking.
@l.g.445120 сағат бұрын
COFFEE takes care of all things! What back breaking, labor intensive work; but the reward is great as you know you have a space now that is dry and free of mold. Your bedroom is big enough to be your living space as well, at least until you're ready to tackle the main room.

lay the french drain pipe 6” below grade, put the beginning of the french drain under the trench at the corner of the house. Do not drain the trench into the french drain, install/build a drain box/catch basin at the corner of the house with a separate pipe to divert the water away from the house

Don't know if Portugal is different but In the UK, a French drain should typically be installed around 150-200mm (6-8 inches) below the finished floor level if the ground level is higher, with the pipe itself sitting within a trench that is around 200-300mm (8-12 inches) deep, depending on the severity of the drainage issue and local soil conditions.
