I did like Martijn does: watch while I finish making dinner after a yard work day, strange 70° slight breeze and semi- sunny tired from raking up leaves. I love the snow but not while I need to drive a car and trailer up a steep mountain side. I’m lying: I love snow even when it’s a challenge to drive in safely. I’m glad that you attacked the inevitable drainage issue in the second cabin. I believe that you’ve got the right plan, inside and outside, to handle the water diversion down the hill between cabins. You’re probably gonna have to include the uphill side of the workshop and beside it and downhill past the cabins just to deal with maintaining the roadway as well. That’s a big job there trying to aesthetically get the water to where it’ll want to flow naturally, but you’ve already been working on the plan I’m sure. All your plans are so well thought out and researched. Things seem to always fit into the environment unobtrusively. Great works continue. Thx for sharing your creative energy with us. You bless us and we bless you. Be well and safe 🌵

Hi I am 55 years now as a builder engineer. Your drawing was great. Removing water in the building as you are aware you can eliminate that with weeping tile along the outside or along the INSIDE remembering you need to connect the weeping tile to an exit source away from the building to drain away. I have done this several times to buildings in my career as historical consultant and builder to the Alberta Government. My expertise is renovating buildings to their original state in any older structures. It will work here as you have a natural runoff on the side of the building by the stairs... Best of luck..
@saraamy57906 күн бұрын
I live in Seattle, where it rains a lot. I agree that the water may be coming off the interior sloping roof. I wonder if more rain gutters for the roof could help.
@GlobetechtruthJF5 күн бұрын
@@saraamy5790 Unless we have more information Martijn drawing shows the solution. We can only speculate that the moisture inside is a result of water entering the building from the high side of the property toward the downslope. This is the natural runoff of the property which has a natural solution built in here. This is a no brainer in creating a weeping tile or french drain situation along the problematice wall, assuming its the west wall of the building that is the sourse of entry and is consequently the moisture entering point.

And then reversing the process---but look at what you accomplished! Now for the 'easy' part of plumbing, etc. Now, if it'd been me: I would look up at the skylight and say--DAY OFF! Getting to work with low motivation and lousy weather is the true SISU mentality by Martijn! 😊. For the water & heat insulation, using french drainage below the inside floor level and adding bitumen+foam board barrier to underground wall level are crucial to avoid diffusion and capillary moisture creeping in and in worst case cause health problems due to mold.

What a work ethic! The Herculean task of digging out already-laid sand and gravel, digging the sub-floor deeper, then adding more gravel, compacting it and the sand and returning the insulation would've made even Hercules say: "No way! NO WAY!!" And yet... Martijn does it without a qualm. The Pajero is a BEAST! Watching Martijn trying to come from below on that snowy slope had me betting with myself: "He's not going to make it!" And yet, like Martijn re-digging out the basement, the Pajero got it done. Time to terrace out the lower driveway around the picnic table and firepit so the trailer doesn't slide downhill when making that turn!

Martijn, Just an alternative idea to build the floor: Concrete and plastic films prevent the evaporation of moisture, so it accumulates below. We had the same situation at the ground floor of an old building. And we substituted it all by a 20 cms layer of crushed foam glass. The result is very pleasing. This material doesn't get soaked, it insulates very well and it is very easy to transport and to handle. No more cold feet. And no need for a plastic insulation. You can build a swimming layer of floor board on top (that's what we have done) or a stone floor. But you have to be shure no more water gets in from the outside before you build in the new materials. And by the way: Many thanks for all your videos! I like what you're doing.
@GeorgeSidman6 күн бұрын
I am an architect and general contractor. We are long-time watchers and love everything about your project, and your excellent videography. Many thanks.... Good hydraulic engineering presumes the water will get in regardless. It is not about stopping the water outside, but knowing how to manage its inevitable intrusion, despite French Drains. The stone wall footings and your new foundation walls have obviously interrupted the strata that drained the sub-surface water downhill, and trapped it inside the building. Deepening the depth of the gravel and sand will do nothing. To fix this, you need to relieve the hydraulic head by providing a way for the water to get out downhill. When the gravel was removed, a few small drain holes drilled through the lower wall and over the edge of the hill would do the trick. You could easily retrofit this before the slab is placed. Although, your new wood rack (nice job!!) is actually now in the way. Also, the vapor barrier should be between the sand and the foam and it should be carefully turned up inside the foundation walls to restrict capillary creep up the walls and into the slab.

Martijn, imagine being 8 years old, and going from our farm to the city to sit in the balcony of a big city theater to see Ben Hur in 1959. It would be so interesting to hear what you thought of that film. Oh, and on a gigantic screen, seeing the star going across that night sky was breathtaking. And beautiful instrumental arrangement of the Schubert. Going straight through, I am on #117. SO interesting to be watching from both ends! You strongly inspire me to "get up!" and accomplish things.

Thank you for posting. I sometimes watch your videos multiple time to calm me down. I’m an American viewer, and our political climate has me very worried right now. Thank you.

Hey there Martin! I would never say,' I told you so'; but I did suggest to you long time ago about making a driveway connecting to the road adjacent to your cabins. Where we see the cows walking up and down. It would make it so much easier for you to just enter your land there and also exit. A nicely graded widish drive for your vehicles, trailers and others like trucks that can make it up the mountain to deliver to your building site. I had suggested the excavation around the foundations of both cabins, the waterproof membrane and gravel backfill with French drains to keep ground moisture away. I had also suggested excavating a big area between the cabins and the workshop area, to bring the grade down and keep water from getting near the cabins. Head 'em off at the pass', so to speak. I had suggested doing the drive, excavating, and all on both cabins before you did the ground floors, and then do them both, at least as far as getting to the concrete floor pour. You did learn a lot after the first one and it makes for great content. It must have been white knuckle driving on icy roads barely wide enough for a single vehicle with a sheer drop on one side! At least the trees would catch you if you did slide off? As a yute, I worked for a brick mason in Northern Upstate New York. Long, very snowy winters, measured in feet, sometimes yards at a time. Building new houses with basements, water was the issue. Excavate the area, grade around it to create drainoff, build block walls, waterproof block below grade, but also above grade. 6 feet of snow at a time, most houses were sitting at least 4 feet above grade, if not more. It was much better to excavate before the wet Spring and avoid the muddy quagmire. We would be laying block in the cold, building chimneys, great fun. Sweating in freezing weather, layers of clothing on, off, on, just too much fun. Ahh, the good old days! Heres to your good old and new days. Good thing you dont have building inspectors, or do you? It would be bad if one came along and toldya that gravel was wrong size after you poured the concrete? Bad old days?

I remember vaguely that what you suggest was not an option. Regulations are not easily surpased. There is no way the lower building site can be connected to the West side of the road passing the building.

Lovely to see you again Martijn. I’m catching up with you a week late. You looked nithered on the coldest days. The weather looked really cold and grim. We have a very high water table here now adays. In the heat of summer here in the north of the UK, two spits down and even on light sandy soil its pooling water. Your chicken coop is looking really well now. It’s a joy to watch you working and the end result. Spring is round the corner, there is more sunshine, the days lengthen and the bulbs are coming up and the buds are on the trees. Your walk looked lovely. See you next week.
