@@chrisalex82 Without special software(VPN, DPI blockers, Proxy) it takes like 2 minutes to load in a main page of YT without the pics. It takes literally days to load a 15-minutes long 1080p60 video. Technically you are correct it isn't banned. Still unusable tho. Steam is trying VERY hard to avoid the ban. Successfully so far. There are a lot of stuff(topics/artworks/games etc) that is just hidden for russian accounts and there is even more stuff that unavailable in russia due to sanctions

You can launch simple goodbyeDPI and watch youtube like you did in 2017 but your friend with different provider will need to start AmneziaWM, check if generated config still works (if not - use script that will generate another and pray for it to work) and then if it works you can watch youtube and talk on discord, but... say goodbye to gaming bc your ping will sky-high to 140-170. on russian servers.

Propaganda 2) Character looks vaguely female but a man? Propaganda 3) Creator of a show is gay or trans? Propaganda(Digital Circus was the show in question) It took so long to fix this awful situation and I'll never forgive these bags of dust for trying to harm my family in such a disgusting way.

The reason that geo-blocking did not work for Russia is that when it comes to specifically LGBT content, Russia doesn't just want to keep their citizens from seeing it. Or more realistically, they know their citizens will still be able to get access to it with a VPN. That being said, if anybody from Discord is seeing this, you guys should set up a .onion service to allow people to access Discord over tor because that is one of the few services that has been consistently proven to be able to evade Russian censorship. So the issue with taking Russia's statement on pedophilia at face value is they classify transgender content as pedophilia, not just as LGBT propaganda. In Russia, at least to my knowledge, you don't necessarily need a VPN, which will make your connection worse and limit bandwidth, essentially getting rid of the reason to use Discord - great voice quality. You may be able to work around this by using GoodbyeDPI or Zapret software that fools DPI and gives you direct access to Discord. This method is somewhat technically involved: it requires finding which fooling configuration works for your ISP. It also makes it impossible to launch some games because of anti-cheat software not liking internet traffic manipulation. So, choose your poison. Or self-host TeamSpeak or Mumble, forgetting about using Discord for comms with your mates. Really unfortunate situation for Russian users.

If you self-host your VPN and have bandwidth you described, good for you. Though, you are likely to host your VPN outside Russia, so your ping will definitely increase, especially if you are living in eastern part of Russia, cuz reaching for Frankfurt or Amsterdam (where else do they host VPNs?), to Discord voice server, and then make it all the way back is a heck of a long trip. Sprinkle it with VPN overhead itself, and yeah, you got rid of low latency aspect of Discord voice chat. With this you can as well just use WhatsApp, Telegram or whatever for calls.

The problem is not so much the content that was on the site, but that another popular service in Russia, VK, conditionally came to Roskomnadzor and said that we have a good analogue (which does not exist). Most likely, this is why the ban occurred. After the blocking, there was a lot of advertising on this same service about why blocking dicsord is good, with a link to a poorly made service under the guise of an analogue. And in general, now in Russia there is a madhouse in this regard. First, they blocked KZbin, then a site with stock videos (it seems to be very popular, but I do not remember the name), then Discord, now they have banned 7tv emoticons for twitch, and in the coming days they will disable speedtest and its analogues. And the reasons are very stupid. For example, they want to block speedtest because it “cooperates with the FBI and leaks information there”, although in fact they just made their own service, and thus are trying to drive traffic there.

as a russian, let me clarify some things: 1. some information I've heard was that the Russian goverment requested Discord to hand over End-to-End Encryption voice chat keys, which were not given. you can guess what the goverment would use that for. 2. the ban is EASILY bypassable through VPNs and other bypassers (I am in a call with my friends right now) 3. the goverment couldn't care less for anything but two things that were aforementioned in the articles: political purposes (AKA the war) and "LGBT propaganda". oh, and don't think this stops here on Discord. KZbin is extremely slow without external programs, Twitter and Instagram are inaccessible, and Steam got put in the registry. which brings to the point of: 4. Roskomnadzor blocking every application or website to replace with an (much worse) alternative. what's funny is that those alternatives are usually unmoderated as hell. we joke about the fact it's a matter of time until the entire internet gets banned, but as much as it is humor... there's a pinch of truth in that.

Discord got banned in Turkiye for different reasons also. Basically, it was because some people were harassing minors with their personal information even, etc, pretty much for the same reasons as Roblox block "It's not safe for minors". The stupid thing is (besides the fact this app wasn't for minors in the first place), these people will find another platform almost always so instead of blocking a platform whenever something bad becomes trending about it (they were always bad we all know that but they take action just when it becomes trending). Kids should be educated about safety on the internet and not given technological devices at such a young age but since that's a harder solution, they find the way out like this without asking the opinion of the public.

Fellow Russian here (don't mind the pfp, it hasn't been changed since the "Wide Putin Walks" meme was a thing and probably won't ever be because it's silly). Discord is banned as well as X, Instagram (and the whole Meta infrastructure), various foreign and Russian oppositional newspapers AND KZbin is being slowed down drastically. And guess what? I'm commenting a video on KZbin as me and my friends chat in Discord. Everything is easily bypassable. In fact, Roskomnadzor is doing a good deed by teaching more and more Russian people to bypass their restrictions. The way to use Discord was introduced LITERALLY the minute the news announced the ban. AND IT DOESN'T EVEN INVOLVE VPN! The same goes for KZbin. Roskomnadzor has proven its incompetence back in 2016 when attempts to block Telegram were made (they even accidentally damaged their own infrastructure during that time, lol). Yes, we are inevitably heading to the Chinese Firewall, but while we are still somewhat open to the Internet everybody can and will get as much ways to bypass it as possible.
