@fluffrierАй бұрын
@@Keventor It's pretty complicated depending on the case but usually: 1. If the server-side software is leaked, using that is considered copyright infringement, as is the case with the leaked Ragnarok Online's AEGIS. 2. If the servers is ran with emulators, which are server-side softwares that are custom-made to mimic the behavior of the server-side software, they usually aren't considered copyright infringement unless in extreme cases. However, if these private servers distributes the client that is required to connect to their servers, it's considered copyright infringement as the client contains copyrighted material. 3. If the owners somehow manage to run their servers with emulators and you don't distribute the client themselves then most likely they'll be fine, as is the case with most WoW servers. Those server runs on an emulator and the owners often point the players to a place where they can download the compatible client version off of a website that distributes them for archival purposes. These mostly get legally taken down in very serious cases like Nostalrius.

Nexon and Maplestory by proxy, is a very dystopian nightmare. As a long term player (of over 19 years), this company has not only spat on its players, but also took a giant steaming dump on us while claiming that they’ve “heard us” and our complaints. The lootbox rigging is a lot worse than it sounds because in order for players to achieve certain end game bosses, they require a high level of stat (for example, they’ll require attack and boss damage). Not only do the players have to use the loot box to reach the highest tier for the item (the highest tier is legendary, you start off at rare then go to epic, unique and legendary), you also have to roll for the freaking lines (which is the attack and boss damage lines) What’s worse is that certain line combinations were previously impossible to obtain (such as triple boss damage and triple ignore enemy defense) and it was NEVER stated at all to the players, causing players to spend ludicrous amounts of money chasing for those lines That’s not even to say the tier up rates of the cubes are absurdly low and the only reason we found out about it was because Korea has strict gacha guidelines and audits that unveiled this. In Singapore, the Maplestory team not did not reveal the tier up rates to us, they also did not provide the same compensation to us as our Korean counterparts. Not only that, they destroyed our economy by not dealing with players who bot in the game (high level players mind you) while giving us the restriction that the Korean players have with none of the benefit that they got. (I.e in game currency loot boxes) This company has consistently made it difficult for players to progress and even made it extremely clear that they do not give a steaming flying fk about their player

I love Maplestory but I always thought Nexon was such an awful company. This isn't necessarily anything new, Nexon DMCAing and shutting down private servers. But the extent that they are going through to do that started relatively recently (like a few years ago.) It's honestly insane seeing how many servers have been shutdown with their hands alone. And what for exactly? Corporate Greed. People wanna play on private servers mainly for 3 reasons from what I've personally seen: 1. They want to play the game on old versions of the game, kind of how a lot of people really want to play vanilla WoW. People wanna play Maplestory before some of the biggest and most controversial game changing updates, most notably Big Bang. (Hence there being a lot of Pre-BB (Pre-Big Bang) servers.) 2. They want to move away from how Pay 2 Win the game itself is. You mentioned the monetization earlier but man, it's honestly awful how p2w the game is. Sure, it got a little bit better over the years, and the addition of Reboot (now called Heroic) worlds helped a lot for some of the players, at the cost of no trading, but it's still incredibly bad if you're playing on Regular (now called Interactive) worlds. 3. People want to try out new things. They wanna play on servers that provide gameplay that's different from the official servers. It's to the point where there are servers that occassionally pop up that advertise themselves as Ellinia-like (after a server named after one of the towns that featured completely custom progression and gameplay.) It's really unfortunate to see an MMORPG I grew up playing to be behind such an awful company, and any wins against Nexon ought to be celebrated.

That Chase History server was from a game called Grand Chase, its purpose was to fulfil the hole after the original Grand Chase went over (Long Live the Chase), so Grand Chase History was one of the biggest and greatest servers available back then, it contained custom maps, dungeons, RAIDs, everything to keep the game alive, I played before, but after getting end-game I uninstalled it, only knowing of a friend it has reached its end after Grand Chase entered Steam. Just for context, part of the reason why Japanese companies are so aggressive when it comes to legal matters is because they can, powered by the fact that Japan has **absolutely no fair use law**. This is so bad compared to the rest of the world that anyone who ends up showing even a single frame of a copyrighted material in, let's say, a 10-hour video, the entire video can be qualified to any claim or takedown the copyright holder wants to take. They are used to being predatory in their home country, and can't stand the level of leniency in other countries.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Piracy is _always_ the fault of the rights holders for refusing to make their IP sufficiently accessible to those willing to legally obtain it. If someone pirates something, chances are, they already weren't going to buy it in the first place. Unnecessary roadblocks to accessing media don't fix anything, and will always just deter potential consumers from interacting with the IP in any meaningful way. People are more likely to buy something if they can actually access it.

illegal all the same, but honestly if they actually were popular enough to significantly impact their earnings then all the power to them lmao, couple of hobbyists doing a better job than a multi billion company
@KanakotkaАй бұрын
@@Milbyte11 It is actually not even remotely illegal to run your own private server for any game for any reason. You bought (or got for free) the software, and you have the right to run it. You are not compelled by any agreement to connect to the official servers in any capacity. Companies like Blizzard and Nexon here will try to strong arm you with legal threats if you do, but there is zero leg for them to stand on from a legal standpoint. The issue is as a multi-billion dollar company they can afford better lawyers than some lads who are running a private server, and those lawyers will be well paid and corrupt enough to likely find some way to get the lads in trouble. They in fact know they have no legal leg to stand on in these cases, as historically takedowns of private servers only are in terms of cease and desist. There is no recorded case other than this very specific case where there was any recompensation or fine attached to the shutdown of a private server. In this very specific case however the illegal part was them making a very cozy profit off of it, which means Nexon can argue they're using the software they own to illegally profiteer. The technical term here would be both racketeering and price gouging, though obviously anything on youtube comments is not legal advice, counsel or legal opinion and only a fool would take it as such.
