I am a new disc golfer (5month). Before DG, I played golf for 40 years with 15 of those years competitive golf was my focus. In golf...short game (150yds in) is king. I have approached disc golf with this educated assumption that the same holds true. In 5 months of focusing 80% of my practice on putting and approach shots I have gone from +38 to +2 on my home course (also up to 280ft BH/220 FH). I also use a net but it literally is 5% or less of my practice and almost exclusively focused on form but NEVER full power into a net. The net is a great tool to help ingrain form changes. But as you point out it's a double edged sword that you are wise to recognize and mitigate as you progress. It's all too easy to break your form trying to go hard and fast with out full flight confirmation. A rule I use that was lifted from golf is to endeavor to never throw a targetless shot. Net work helps with mechanics bit sucks for most of the practice we SHOULD be doing. It's videos like this that raise your contents value IMHO. There is an abundance of snake oil information out there. Thanks for not falling into that category!

Thanks! This comment means a lot. I try my hardest to be thoughtful and genuine. Thanks for your insights too! So maybe my 40% 30% 30% framework will still be too much focus on power form. We'll see. Thanks again!

A good mic is always a good investment. Sounds good 💯 Congrats on getting re-up'd with Lonestar. 🎉 I don't have a net...I can see its value... keeping you loose and increasing your strength...but I'm a field guy for all the reasons you gave.

Yeah, man. I really need to get to the field more. Thanks for the feedback. Love the new mics!

I agree with you, Bunky! I know I've personally spent too much time doing form work into a net, and that's not why I got into disc golf. I enjoy watching the discs fly, and outside of visiting a course and warming up before a round, or maybe doing a practice round, I miss the fieldwork. I think there's a connection you get with the disc there that can't be replicated with a net, though the net is arguably better for certain types of feedback. But the soul of the game is in the air!

100% brother! Let them discs fly!

Great stuff Bunkie. Couldn't agree more. My local field has a couple of spots where you can throw through a tunnel of trees, and I spend most of my practice time there. Every course we play has trees; the golf shots we throw need to hit lines; as you say, practice how you play. Net is fine for working on mechanics, but you don't get to use the TechDisc sim numbers when you're playing a round. And, I don't bag a TechDisc fairway driver to play disc golf. I bag my Muskets, Explorer, Hex, Crave, Watt, etc. I need to know those discs and throw them where I want to. Like Simon Lizotte says (and every pro): Know your bag.

For sure! Thanks for the feedback!

One of the nice things about ball golf is driving ranges. I thought it would be awesome if there were disc golf driving ranges, but the problems are, the same discs fly very differently due to wear, plastic, weight etc. so you couldn't have "range discs" like range balls, and shagging your discs would be dangerous with other people there. I think the only possibile way would be is if you brought your own discs and there were fast disc shagging robots that could identify your discs and bring them back to you. Not quite feasible yet, but I can dream.

That would be amazing to have. My dream is to buy about 20 acres near me and put up a course, training facility, and disc shop. Driving range would fit into that plan nicely.

My family owns cattle, so I have more than enough room to throw full power shots in the pastures. But there’s always a slight chance my disc lands in cow sh*t. 😂

I really don't have room for a net, but I'm lucky that the local playing fields are only 10 minutes walk away and there's usually space for practise. My usual is to throw for distance and on my return throw at my bag with different shot shapes. I'm sure it's not very original, but I like it. If someone could invent a dog repellant spray for discs, that would make playing field practise even better.

Lol, I know, right?? People are always walking their dogs around the field I throw in.
