Very very true.....Dr Amens findings are not conclusive , infact independent research showed 2 people with same psychiatric conditions and similar brain SPECT scan results responded very differently to same medication which Dr Amen doesn't point out. Some people don't even respond well to most medications hence they require more of therapy . Psychiatric treatment is not as simple as Dr Amen interprets it to be to based on scans and give meds....if it was so conclusive the FDA, EU medical authority and many others would have approved it. However brain scan research is critical in future till more definitive relationships are found.

Well, if know your subject well, you will also acknowledge that prominent scientists/ researchers in history got a push back from academia status quo. @@shanpyan You can see improvements in people’s lives after they went to fortune tellers and gave money to megachurch con artists. That’s subjective and not indicative of good science. If Amen is legitimate, he needs to publish peer reviewed studies on his use of SPECT. But really, he’s a complete joke. Anyone who says they can use a structural OR functional scan to diagnose a mental disorder is joking, and even a BS in neuroscience knows that. Plus, he only does 2 SPECT scans. 2! He would need dozens at least to even be in the ballpark of his data being taken seriously.

HBOT (Hyperbaric oxygen therapy) does not work in cases of chronic mTBI. It may show better results in moderate to severe brain injury. HBOT usually has noticeable results based off Glasgow outcome scale (GSO) in mTBI only if it's used immediately after the concussion has occurred.

To be fair I need to point out, that psychiatrists indeed don't perform diagnosis on evidence-based methods as other doctors, despite they have the tools... Usually they only interview you and prescribe some drugs without even testing, if you're body is eligible for this kind od drug, and if you feel subjectively worse then they change it to another... I visited couple psychiatrists, psychologists, I've been through therapy too and noone ordered or suggested ANY lab tests, which is shame, because I got as I later found out severe defficiency of vitamin D3, and it is scientifically proven that one of the symptoms of that can be depression... So instead of anti-depressants I should be on the D3 supplements from the long time! I'm happy that I did therapy, because it helped me care less what other think (and deal with anxiety caused by that) and adress that I had a problem with being a perfectionist, which I would never figure out on my own, but I will never get back all this afternoons when I didn't have any strenght to do anything after job, which I thought was depression and now I know also can be caused by D3 defficiency, because it directly affects how much of vital strenght you have. I really would like for mental health care specialists to have more holistic and science based approach.

They also don't often look for things outside their "realm" for example ADHD, autism, etc. I'm not saying Dr Amen *does* but just these conditions exist and they need to think about other possibilities. I was misdiagnosed as having schizophrenia when I had epilepsy. This is malpractice too. When it was discovered it completely changed my life. Ironically the doctor who dxed me correctly works for Amen clinics.

As an actual doctor (Emergency) the idea of this unnecessary radiation makes me irate. We have special decision tools to avoid CTs unless completely necessary because in young people, 1 in 1000 young people CT head scans lead to a case of leukemia. It's like hundreds of xrays to your head and neck. A CT with no clear indication makes this radiation equivalent to malpractice or assault or something. Also, idk if he did an actual residency, doesn't sound like it because his medical fund of knowledge sounds like that of a 4th year medical student from 40 years ago who barely studies and was picked on for being a dick to his peers. Medicine is highly imperfect, yes. A bunch of random chemicals that you pee out at best and get poisoned by at worst isn't going to fix it though. Also, ummm all of medicine is seeing patients, doing a good exam, and being an astute clinician. Too many scans and blood work is actually a sign the doctor doesn't know what they're doing, btw.

Nuclear medicine is often used with cancer patients and so it is a life and death situation which justifies getting scanned. Alot of patients getting brain spect scans are suicidal and their behaviors are detrimental to thier lives and others around them. If the person kills themselves you don't have to worry about exposue to radiation, all bets are off. Junior Seau shot himself in the chest so someone would look at his brain. I am pretty sure his family would have rather had him get the scan 10 years earlier so they could have treated him rather than not getting scanned for fear of radiation exposure(the same amount as a chest x-ray) and him shooting himself in the chest. So you are a ER doctor and you dont know we have epidemic with head injuries???

I think fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) -positron emission tomography (PET) as a scan is far better for measuring neural volume then what this con artist is suggesting. SPECT with a 9mTc-HMPAO tracer is only valuable in cases like diffusion and bleeding of small vessels in the brain for younger patients, and right after a concussion to use a deciding maker to predict the Glasgow Outcome Scale (GSO) in post-concussion. In most mTBI cases, perfusion in the brain returns back to normal after a few weeks. Unless you have had a concussion in the past, these brain scans should be left to neurologists. FDG-PET I feel is the future in brain imaging for concussions, mainly because of it's ability to see metabolite functions in cell bodies of neurons. Because glia cells (Schwann cells, microglia etc.) are low in ATP use, it's far easier to notice outliners in PET and find a loss of neural volume. If the volume is significantly low based off age group, then that could be an indicator of brain injury and underline where the psychiatric and cognitive symptoms are coming from. However, there is no legitimate brain scan right now in the US to diagnose psychiatric pathologies.

Majority supplements whether herbal or vitamins standalone are not atall enough to control health issues from Diabetes, BP , cardiac or even mental illnesses...the pharma meds although most have sideffects are pretty effective for a lot of people and it takes a while till they find the right med with good effectiveness and tolerable sideffects profile. In my experience Herbal or natural supplements on their own were never enough to help with my health issues but few herbs along with my pharma medication boosted the effectiveness so there is definitively value in Herbs and the one I take had been well researched and many medical doctors in india prescribe it as an adjunct to the main med. They prescrib from the Himalaya Herbal company which has Liv 52 and diabcon peiducts as its most clinical researched products in Indian medical universities. What is more required is rigorous research of herbs on diseases, most of existing research on herbs is of poor quality as many are done by Supplement manufacturing companies...hence it needs to be done by independent institutions with no conflict of interest.

SPECT visualizes blood flow - that's it. You can have all the blood flow in the world but if the physical structures (receptors, neurons etc etc) ain't functioning, you ain't going to see that! Analogy? No hot water? I can measure the flow rate of water out your kitchen sink faucet...Oh, it's normal. Therefore, there's nothing wrong. Except that the water isn't hot because the circuit breaker has tripped. Flow rate won't tell you that but that's exactly what Amen's claiming to do with SPECT. There's nothing special about his supplement blends. Sure, some of those ingredients can do some of the things he says (I know from my own experience) but SPECT can't tell you which $100-per-month blend to buy. And, as is all-too-common, there is absolutely no supporting evidence that the supplements do as claimed. As much as I prefer supplements over Rx meds, as soon as I got my Dx for ADHD at 56 and started Ritalin, my world changed. Literally within 2 hours. And, thanks to my insurance, for a fraction of the price of the supplements (whose consistent quality and efficacy are typically not controlled or independently audited).

He's advocating a 21st century form of phrenology. Phrenology was a commonly accepted "science" (in the 18th century) where they'd measure the dimensions of someone's head to determine their personality traits. Only this time, instead of measuring head dimensions of someone with a cheap measuring tape while promising results, he's using fanciful words to make people pay significant amounts of money while promising results. Just as having a bigger forehead did not correspond with a higher intelligence/ greater stubbornness's or some comparable nonsense, your colored scans being a certain way doesn't correlate with disorders either. In fact, I imagine SPECT scans can show quite a variation in the same person at different times of the day or over the period of one hour, mostly because blood flow into different parts of the body changes ... ALL the time. Unless you're looking for biological causes of problems like infections, tumors, strokes .....etc SPECT scans are utterly useless. I'd highly advocate going to a street magician who reads Tarot cards over going to this quack. At least you wouldn't expose yourself to radiation & wouldn't pay that much money. But perhaps most of all, you wouldn't go out of that experience thinking what you did was grounded in "science" in any way, shape or form. Sorry for the tone. I'm a recent medical graduate & seeing people like this in my medical profession saddens me.

I wonder, if his goal truly was to help people, it his intentions were purely loving, why would he be in the position he is in? Marketing to celebrities and only interested in "helping" people with money. Perhaps he would go out and "help" the lay person, but I suspect it would only be for additional clout that would get him closer to the goal he actually has in his heart, money, which is power. Even listening to him on this video, I can feel myself yearn for the things he promises, there's like flutters of excitement at the prospect of an easy or simple fix. But then I realize that there is no easy fix, and he is using people's weakness as a tool to get him what he wants. Even if he believes in what he sells, he can't lie about his own motivations.

My son was treated at the Amen Clinic. They do not diagnose, they do not encourage you to buy supplements from their sight only. I am a medical professional and for years have pushed for my son to have a brain scan rather than just trial and error of psychiatric medications used as a guessing game. My son was once a totally independent man, traveling the Country working as a lineman and in his off time hunting and fishing all over North America. He had played college level baseball and has a very high IQ. Over the last 15 years he has become totally disabled due to his mental health. In one month after going to the Amen Clinic, starting with supplements, diet changes and decreasing psych meds, done by his local psychiatrist, he has drastically improved. It has not cost us thousands of dollars either, however; how much is a healthy brain worth? At least as much as the price of a vacation. That is about what we have paid. He has had detailed comprehensive lab work done at the clinic in our home town, covered by insurance and ordered by the Amen Clinic. The results show several issues, results from our hometown lab not an Amen Clinic lab. The Amen Clinic internal medicine physician is now testing him for chronic lyme disease as well as other exposures that can cause the body to mimic mental illness. Our family finally has hope as we are seeing some of my son's personality returning. I have paid less than I paid when I placed him in a psychiatric group home for 3 months were he was so sedated he did not even know his name. My Uncle spent almost his entire adult life in a mental hospital, subjected to inhumane treatments, I know because I obtained his medical records. Have you researched the amount of folate added to foods beginning in the 1980s? Do you know how negatively this can effect someone who has a homozygous MTHFR mutation? I have researched mental illness for many years and the Amen Clinic approach, contrary to your review, is the only approach that has helped my son. Reviews are reviews but results are what matters and our family is watching it in real time. The Amen Clinic is top notch and as a medical professional it makes sense.

Dr amen will use proper treatments to help his or any other condition. The brain scans do show high and low areas of activity. He also does lab work for lyne disease, b12, hormones etc etc he tests alot. His work is better than other random people out to hunt him down because his truth of peaking is making some people less money. Dr amen had a 9 uear old nephew with a cyst in his temporal lobe causing severe mental issues. Many other Dr's said don't remove it thinking it has jotting to do with his mental issues... Explain to your therapist that PET and SPECT scans cannot be used in genetic disorders like ADHD Or ASD. The closest "neuroimaging" we have to detecting abnormal temporal function in those with ADHD is a QEEG scan. It has it's pro's and con's, but it's far cheaper (around $300 v. Dr Ameen's $7000). Besides that, neurophysiological testing would be your best bet. Unless you had a congenital defect (fetal distress baby), have a concussion history, or poisoned yourself (mercury or lead etc.), you should not get any type of MRI/nuclear imaging of the brain, as this would be a waste of money.

I was young and my parents took me to amen clinic. They did a brain scan. Mind you, this is before I was diagnosed with autism later in life. They prescribed me Ambien because I would stay up too late in my college years, which to me wasn't too big of an issue. Because of that prescription, I had an addiction to Ambien for 10 years, I would abuse it. All because I went to the amen clinic. I'm not sure if any blame should go to them or not, but ever since, I've always had mixed feelings about amen. I think the worst thing you can do is prescribe a young adult Ambien. They could have given me melatonin. Pretty sad on their part. I'm glad that I was able to kick the stuff, no thanks to them.

I AM grateful for the experience thus far and I AM looking forward to starting my treatment plan and getting the results that I have been patiently and graciously awaiting for. 💝🙏🏽✨

You saw psychiatrists and we don't know why Ma'am, so why should we trust your report? He diagnoses his patients in a way that is similar to procedures used in some European countries where all patients get top quality healthcare. Also, maybe he uses the language he does because it's similar to that used in younger audiences needing the most help. Also, maybe he assists patients with minor issues before they become major ones.

I know he just wants to help and wants me to feel better and when he found this it was the golden ticket moment for him. But then I realized, he hasn't been suffering from a severe mental illness for the last decade. So he hasn't been around the block enough times, like me, to realize that these gals and guys are a dime a dozen. There's always someone, usually with a medical degree, over promising and over charging. 🙄 I've fallen for other things, in the past. Not about to do it this time and throw away 5k. For more serious psychiatric symptoms EEG and MRI (psych clinic I rotated at had their own), but mostly to rule out brain tumors, hydrocephalus or other structural changes which would by treated by neurologists (and EEG for epilepsy, which can have psychiatric symptoms as well, maybe some sleep/wake cycle disorders). I love star signs, mbti and personality tests even if they are less robust as long as it’s clearly understood that the evidence is limited and it’s being used only as an fun introspective tool. I’m not sure people getting these tests are informed of the limitations and it’s very predatory.

I disagree with a lot of what Dr Amen talks about, especially all the spect when there’s no indication for it. However psychiatrists are really at a disadvantage for medical testing. Insurance companies rarely take referrals from a psychiatrist. In fact most of the time they have to contact the pcp to do the referral. I can’t tell you how many times someone has a sudden case of severe bipolar disorder, psychotic episodes, etc that end up being traumatic brain injury, anemia or even epilepsy. This isn’t uncommon and patients can lose their lives when they fall through the cracks. So yeah, take everyone’s advice with a grain of salt but he’s also not wrong with some of his points like outside testing.
@scarred10
@scarred10 8 ай бұрын
all those 3 organic causes of psych symptoms would be very obvious and anemia cannot cause either,it may cause fatigue and low mood but not instability or psychois at all.A routine blood test with thyroid function and vitamin levels should be best practise for anyone who presents to psychiatry but its not always done a brain scan would not be useful without very clear indications of organic disease.

Also you might want to inform the president of the united states he gets his information from researchers that all use functional imaging. Also alcohol, tobacco and food companies all use neuroscientist that use functional imaging to get you chemically addicted to their product. It’s not a accident these things are highly addictive. The reason psychiatrist don’t use functional imaging is because it is more profitable to prescribe meds and ask questions later. How much money do you think pharmaceutical companies bring in? It is difficult to understand why PBS has some questionable people on their shows.
