Capcom never had confidence in the title. They put it through a hellish development cycle (thus almost 1/3 of the game was discarded late in the cycle) and then threw it onto the market with little to no advertising. It's the secrets that made this game insanely good. Every box must be opened, every monster must die, every change day/night brought a new experience. The incredible side quests where the game switches tones fast, one moment I'm looking for my missing friend the next I find a witch then I find out the witch is a pawn and secret location and insane loot. I talk to the queen the next time we meet I save her and now I have to rescue her from a castle full of treasure and I get insane items. The game keeps giving, I meet female bandits and if my characters are female they let me go no issues but if it's a male party we have to fight on sight. I explore and I end up facing a dragon out of nowhere and I keep fighting it for 3 hours cause I'm no where near strong enough to face it head on and I kill it.

Don't agree. One of the best action gameplay systems in an early 2010s RPG. Don't think it does anything better than other RPGs of the time in other categories though, certainly not than all other RPGs of all time. Other RPGs have a better claim to that title being better rounded in all areas. Final fantasies, Zeldas, Chrono triggers, Baldur's Gates, Star oceans etc
@fukunaga-kane Жыл бұрын
@@7dayspkingIt's a shame that CAPCOM didn't invest more in Dragons Dogma when it was first released. If they had delivered the complete experience without budget cuts, it could have been a huge hit. Unfortunately, they missed the opportunity to skyrocket the game's popularity like Dark Souls did. Now that DD2 has arrived late to the party, it's hard to compete with Fromsoft's four new games. CAPCOM would instead babysit/give more attention to their Monster Hunter IP. MHW already has the new-gen mechanics that Dragons Dogma should have had.
@Neonmirrorblack Жыл бұрын
Maybe "Action RPG" but not RPGs in general. But besides that, I don't even consider this even an ARPG. There's no real choice for dialogue, and you're really just outfitting your main character and main pawn with gear and changing classes every now and then. It's even less of an RPG than Diablo, which is a series I've *never* considered an RPG. I'd still rank it among one of the best games of all time though. Like I said in a previous comment, it's basically Capcom's older 2D D&D games redone in 3D.

Disagree with you on it being the definition of role playing. I only consider it an RPG very loosely, similar to other JRPGs. More of an combat, gameplay, action focused game. Not much depth in character interactions, branching story, characters, questing or role playing. Not as linear as the majority of JRPGs but not as in depth as almost any western RPG in those areas, not even than Euro RPGs which tend to be more limited than American RPGs. Kind of like the opposite of Souls, the sames games are less linear and more open ended than Dragons Dogma but have weaker questing, dialogue and branching. Both are pretty weak though

Owned the game for years, but only started enjoying it a few months ago. It reminds me of Everquest when it first came out. Not many games have been able to capture the same feeling.
@vhayne91777 Жыл бұрын
I've owned it since it came out (PS3 I think?). Never really played it. Think I remember the beginning a little, then getting to where you get your first pawns. But for whatever reason, I stopped playing. But you have me at "Everquest"! To me, EQ is THE best game ever released. So many reasons why. But I'd really love to hear how/why it reminds you of EQ. It's kindof rare to see people say, "this game is kindof like EQ, in a way". I've done it. With oddball comparisons to games like Terraria, Tarkov hehe. Terraria because of it's "make your own way gamestyle", also how you sortof have to think "what do I want to do/accomplish tonight" - made me remember how EQ did that. You had to plan before you logged in. With Tarkov, it's the lack of handholding, but mostly because of how it utilizes map knowledge. I remember having to guide people through dungeons in EQ, as well as having to know where certain mobs spawned. Knowledge was power. Same thing in Tarkov.
@jatilq Жыл бұрын
Everquest didn't hold your hand. You had to yell out for someone find your corpse, so you can drag it out of danger and loot it.. You needed a balanced team or it wouldn't work. If you were an ass, you couldn't find a group. This game reminds me of EQ, because of some of the unforgiving mechanics. Remember the need to kill a beetle for light at lower levels or paying to get a portal. I like that you can use the pawns to simulate the old groups from EQ and little things like bumping into people matter. EQ your race or deity you follow could get you killed. Many deaths in OT as a Bard. Fighting down a dungeon and having the team wipe, only to have to do it again to get your stuff.... And raids with 50+ toons. No red circles under bosses to know they were going to cast. You had to learn fights.@@vhayne91777

Dragons Dogma holds a very special place in my heart. My girlfriend and I bought a playstation 3 and Dragons Dogma for christmas and up till that point she has been backseat gaming a little bit but it was more my thing. But once we got the ball rolling playing it we just kept going and spend almost our entire holiday vacation glued to the screen and roaming the lands. I've replayed it a few times ever since and it is still an absolutely phenomenal experience. Only gripe I have with the game is that the narrative with the looping and reincarnation comes into play way to late, two friends of mine mentally checked out by the point they reached that and couldn't appreciate it for what it tried to do. I will never forget how my pawn (molded after my girldfriend) clung to a dragon as it rose to the sky and then slammed back into the ground seconds later because she was pummeling his heart. We were roaring and cheering. We've also checked farming spots for specific cute items for her to wear and embraced the fashion souls aspect. And she was always very happy when someone took her pawn on missions and gave her nice ratings. Truly some very memorable experiences have been had.

The failure of Starfield in providing a nourishing exploration world, coupled with the success of Baldurs Gate 3 for the fantasy genre, will herd alot of people into DD2 to refuel that fantasy itch. DD2 is going to blow up. If you can get over the aforementioned, then the game really sits nicely in any top 10 fantasy RPG list.

definitly one of if not the best game ever...

Now that the games are really cheap on eBay, I purchased tons of role playing games in summer 2022. Months ago I started playing Dragon Dogma Dark Arisen, by far I think it is at the very top of my list of all time best games along with The Witcher. I played all Fable games, The Witcher, started on Elder Scrolls and half way thru Elder Scrolls the Dragon Dogma disc arrived, I have been hooked from day one. I'm not ready to walk away from my Xbox 360 so I will get the new releases for PC, maybe one day I will get the Xbox X but for now I'm happy.

I'm playing it over again to refresh my memory, haven't played it since way back when it came out on PS3, and it's even better than I remember. I know they remastered it on PS4 but never played that version, I'm on Series X, and it looks like a game that just came out. It's harder than I remember though, so many mission where I'm like where do I go to find that lol. It's fantastic, Dragons Dogma 2 is already pre-ordered and paid in full.

Have to say it. None of the Souls games including Elden Ring hold a candle to Dragon's Dogma.
@NisAenino8 ай бұрын
Sorry but I can't agree. A great classic? Absolutely. One of the best games ever made? For sure. But it can't beat Elden Ring. Disregarding the graphics, there is so much more enemy variety, areas to explore, boss fights, no quests like "kill 30 rabbits" or "escort this dude to the shadow fort". Dude, I love this game, but this is like comparing Grigori (ER) to Alduin (DD)
@BigBuddha20128 ай бұрын
@@NisAenino yeah and Grigori is better so what's your point? Elden Ring doesn't hold a candle to Dragon's Dogma. Sorry there was no confusing half baked plot about how Grigori was your grandmother or something (that's a Radagon/Merika reference if you didn't catch it) In Dragon's Dogma death makes sense, it's permanent without magic. In Elden Ring? makes ZERO SENSE! why? cause the point of ER is the challenge/ dificulty and to die repeadetly. The story in itself is a jumbled mess and not fully coherent (although thanks to George RR Martin the story is a bit less drivel from the soul series, but not by a lot) DD has a good story line but the only reason people like you don't like it is it's too "mundane" for you. not enough explosions or wild stuff going on to keep your attention. also did you play DD at all? there are loads of enemy variety? goblins, ogres, cyclops, hydra, griffins, drakes, zombies, skeletons, cockatrice, chimera, harpies, ghosts, living armors, death aka the grim reaper??? saurians/saurian sages, stone/metal golems, beholders, wolves, hellhounds, liches, strigoi, eliminator, garm, silver/golden knights, leap worn corrupted pawns and bandits (im sure im missing a few) as opposed to ER? mostly undead soldiers/knights/peasants who wildly swing at you but sure...suuuree. ER definetly has more enemies to fight, for sure...

One of the very few games that I can just pick up and lose track of time in my enjoyment of the game. I have bought this game at least three to four times, and would do it again. Im so excited for two, one of the games of next year I will be getting day one and playing for a long time!!

I think Dragon´s Dogma is probably one of the most underrated and overseen games in the past. I discovered it while I was sick back in 2016 and it looked pretty interesting to me on steam, as i was in a search for a more lengthy rpg with replayability. I could start now with how my journey began and list everything that Dragon´s Dogma does right and so much better than other RPG´s in that time period (looking at you skyrim), but also what it does wrong (due to a limited amount of time Dragon´s Dogma was given and technical limitations + personal preferences) but i won´t. I think it is great that with the announcement of Dragon´s Dogma II the Franchise gets so much attention which it really really deserves! I hope for the devs it will be the banger of a game they imagine and from what i´ve seen and the time the Team was given this time it absolutely will. While i think Dragon´s Dogma is not the best game ever, it really is a masterpiece - you can´t go wrong - on its own. I really do recommend it, even more now as it is on sale on steam for 5 bucks!

Answer. Subjective opinion. My answer: No, but it offers some great ideas that nobody else seems to want to incorporate into something awesome. Had blast with it. A little annoyed they removed that epic sound track when Dark Arisen came out. Even the most bad aspects gave this game a charm of it's own. Chatty pawns that talked over the top of one another. Pawns that would provide advice on how to deal with an enemy and then not heed their own advice. Pawns that loved to cast the most overpowered spells at needless times (a scratch requires the biggest heals, and an enemy near dead required a kill stealing mega death explosion). Climbing up a monster's backside because of camera and/or monster movements. The two eyed cyclopses. The frame rate destroying mystic knight. "Harpies!". Absolute wonderful memories! it's a game I am really happy to have played.

The potential and interesting ideas were there for sure...its really fun combating monster in various way, and you can really manuever the world however you want, plus randomness in the world especially that dlc island dungeon. My complaint back then were if trying to min max stats its really a hassle changing class every time its near level up, not to mention the reload when you forgot it is time to change class..

Just discovered this game a month or two ago because it's free now on ps plus. Holy crap i can't believe I've never heard of this game. One of the most immersive and addictive RPGs I've ever played. Great game, and it seems to be almost never ending in the amount of content and level of challenge you can find the deeper you go. Definitely one of the best games I've played in the last 5 years. Hard to believe its 12 years old

I was playing Robocop when I saw Dragon’s Dogma was free on PS5. I learned this; an ancient game engine and poor textures = a beautiful game when it’s made with expertise and artistic flair and 17 year developing veterans Teyon suck. Dragon’s Dogma is such an excellent game and after Robocop its beauty is dazzling.

Like yes you are powerful at 200 level but there are plenty of hard bosses and creatures that keeps you on your toes! Making you think how to approach your enemies!.

The thing I love most about DD is the constant unscripted chaos in the wilderness. Still not one other game that does that.
@7dayspking Жыл бұрын
Plenty other games do it, more dynamically, better. Dragon's Dogma doesn't even use 'unscripted' spawns, allenemy spawn points are hand placed and wilderness AI don't have substantial schedules, there's little dynamism at all
@kooltube100 Жыл бұрын
honestly I'm glad they are making a sequel. with the pawn system and the way the ai learned quests and how to battle overtime, just fits the current AI craze. This game was ahead of it's time in this regard and the new development of AI would make this sequel amazing! I would still like the option of coop though, even if you are limited to classes like the ai pawns
@7dayspking Жыл бұрын
Eh. The way Dragons dogma's AI worked isn't like modern AI. Not really ahead of its time either, like simplified versions of Peter Molybeyax's games from a decade earlier like Black & White
@7dayspking Жыл бұрын
Edit: there was also AI focused adventure or simulation games in the 90s focused on training characters. It was unique to employ that in an action RPG though. Only similar examples I remember are Peter Molybeaux's Fable games from half a decade earlier. Dragon's Dogma mashed concepts from other popular games together.

DD was waaaay ahead of its time, that’s why most people couldn’t even comprehend it in 2012. It’s funny to me that 12 years later, when DD2 is introducing the same system from DD, people are so impressed by it, not knowing they could’ve been playing this game 12 years ago 😂
