This is one of the reasons for why I was and still to this day remain VERY critical on Cyberpunk 2077. I was hoping the intro segments based on your V's background was going to have the same depth and truly matter. You know, akin to DA: Origins's origins. No other game has pulled that off except for maybe a CRPG from an indie company since. A game like DA: Origins had MANY reasons to replay the game, and it all started at the beginning when you are crafting your character...like a good RPG should do.

I've really wanted to do this in a tabletop campaign. Instead of the players writing a backstory for their character, they would give a few details & let the DM create a scenario based around what might have been a key moment in their backstory. Each player would have a session dedicated to their origin & the other players could take on supporting roles. Obviously, you'd have to get buy-in from everyone but I think it would help give the players a real connection to each character as they begin the main campaign.

Hard agree! A massive issue with story-telling is the lack of actual world-building. Everything just seems so... anachronistic nowadays. @Magnesius27 күн бұрын
well said.
@tubetorpedo25 күн бұрын
Well said indeed. Anachronistic is great word to use in this context. I've seen scenes from newest DA game, and characters look and feel like modern people (who live in big cities) who are cosplaying fantasy characters, badly. Generally people like escapism because it takes them away from their own reality and creates fantastical worlds they can go into and meet all new kinds of wonderful characters, ideas and realities. Something totally different that stimulates the imagination and created feel of exploration because you have no idea what you will encounter when the story progresses. Instead of them having to see and deal with the exact same issues they already have to live with in real life. So much of modern storytelling in like black hole of imagination, all the imagination is sucked away.

It doesn't have an aerial camera and the combat is accelerated with flashy animations. DAI improves everything DA2 did wrong, but worsens what it did well. It's no longer a crpg. If you're the type of guy who loves to roleplay as evil (which I'm totally not, couch cough), then eat your heart out. You can sacrifice children to demons, betray your best friend (Alistair) and have him executed, help the primary antagonist (Loghain) become a hero, help a demon escape its cage, murder a priest in cold blood, join a dragon-worship cult, help a total douche (Bhelen) become king of dwarves, and of course... genocide the forest elves. That's just the stuff I remember from twelve years ago! And don't forget Oghren, the best drunken teammate in the history of video games. Anyway, thanks Fex for another great review. Perhaps needless to say, I'll be relying entirely on you for my Veilguard content. RIP Dragon Age.

1:20 I always thought that the origins part of the title was meant to highlight the different origin stories the player could play. Which was a charming feature of the game.

Tl dw, 0:16 I agree, and you are perfectly correct based on the title. With the caveat, that for the best experience, you must choose Morrigan as love interest, do the right decision in the end, and play all of the dlcs.

DA Origins was the first game I played over and over again because I just had to know how things played out. Being good felt good. Being evil felt evil. With plenty shades of grey in between.The game didn't hold your hand or pull its punches. I am very, VERY skeptical about Veilguard, but at least we will always have the RPG bliss that is Origins. Never throwing that disk away. It goes to the grave with me.

Imagine a story where the main antagonist of the game is such a compelling character that as you go through the game you discover that they were acting not in self interest, but to save the kingdom the only way they thought they could. They would rather go down in history as a traitor to their kingdom then face annihilation and have no history be written at all and you could actually recognize that and side with them, dooming your relationship with one of your closest confidants but bringing much needed resources and leadership to the fight for survival. That is a story that I had never come across before in the setting of a video game before. It is what made me fall in love with this new world BioWare had created because it made it real, not the PG-13 animated film AAA games like this have become. what happened?

If you took the writing and all the best features from DAO&Bg3, combined it with the combat system and character creator of Dragons Dogma, you would have greatest RPG of all time.
