Another school of thought says that any water animal which lives both on land and water and also eats meat or rather land animals is Haram to eat . So I would think crocodile and alligators fall in this category just like it is forbidden to eat birds and land animal which eat meat.

Crocodiles and alligators can survive outside of water indefinitely if the temperature permit. Same can be said for things like seals and walruses. Sharks are halal to eat though.

"We set out in the army of Al-Khabt and Abu Ubaida was the commander of the troops. We were struck with severe hunger and the sea threw out a dead fish the like of which we had never seen, and it was called Al-`Anbar. We ate of it for half a month. Abu Ubaida took (and fixed) one of its bones and a rider passed underneath it (without touching it). (Jabir added:) Abu 'Ubaida said (to us), "Eat (of that fish)." When we arrived at Medina, we informed the Prophet (ﷺ) about that, and he said, "Eat, for it is food Allah has brought out for you, and feed us if you have some of it." So some of them gave him (of that fish) and he ate it." They brought some whale to the Prophet pbuh and he ate it. Which means that he didn't eat it out of necessity and it is halal in all cases.

I'm not saying that eating alligators is necessarily haram, but there is wisdom in the prohibition of eating animals with canines or claws, as they are carnivores. Carnivores are among the least efficient sources of nutrients and energy because they depend on eating other animals, which in turn feed on plants. Energy is lost at each level of the food chain. Plants capture energy directly from the sun, and herbivores lose some of this energy when they consume plants. This loss continues with each step up the chain, meaning that eating animals that feed on plants or phytoplankton is more efficient and sustainable for the environment. Also carnivores are fewer in number compared to animals lower on the food chain. The higher an animal is in the food chain, the rarer it tends to be. Killing or eating animals at these higher levels can disrupt the ecosystem, leading to severe chain reactions that harm the balance of the food web. This is not an evidence to show it is haram or halal in the shariah. But just to give you an idea on the possible wisdoms behind such ruling. Allah knows best.

I think it's for those who camp in areas around swapms or sea or who are in tough situations as in battles or wars. Food is not available all the time for them, so they need to hunt creatures around them. Idk tbh, even if they found an alligator, that alligator probably didnt live without preys to prey on, so why dont they eat those other preys?
