Everything about it feels so much better than NMS, the grind feels real, the world and galaxy feels alive, and the fact that it occurs in our galaxy with (mostly) real stars and bodies makes it even more enjoyable. I rushed engineers and stumbled across a TON of meta alloys in Maia and made a 30 million profit which kickstarted me into a Krait Mk2 combat build that recently let me A rate the entire ship. After that, I started going to stars I know that are real on my way to Sol. Seeing WISE-XXXX (i forgot the designation lol) and its tiny size with a 7 C surface temp was amazing. Seeing Alpha Centauri was even cooler. Im currently gearing my Krait to go to Sagittarius A to pay it a visit, while an AspX would be better Its not about efficiency, its about the trip there. My personal favorite part of Elite is the background lore. History and backstory have always been things that excite me, and Elite Dangerous delivers this to you in spades. Powerplay is glossed over in this summary, but each power play individual has a rich backstory along with each faction, alien species, corporation, and more. The game does a fantastic job of delivering this to you through the Codex, where you can take the written in-game lore and play it through your ship almost like a little history podcast. The fact that I don’t need to pull up a separate KZbin window to have this happen and can instead do it directly through the game is incredibly enjoyable for me. I know this is a very niche way of enjoying Elite, but I absolutely goddarn love it.
@Neeverseen5 жыл бұрын
If you're in for an action packed, flashy game that leads you through it's content, get No Man's Sky. Elite dangerous is more about realism and setting one's own goals (while still being flashy in terms of sound design and certain events). You can take the roles: Miner, Bounty hunter, explorer, trader, smuggler, pirate, faction pilot, xeno hunter and customize your ships to fit each role or multiple roles perfectly. That said, PvP is also a thing and if you want to be good be prepared to learn a lot because it can be extremely complex. The downside of the game is that the devs. don't seem to really care about it since the studio is currently doing fine. This is painfully obvious if you're deep into the game and have to use user created data bases and tools to have an enjoyable experience. Also prepare for grinding big time.

What is this "grind" people are complaining about? I call it playing the game. Regardless of what I do, credits keep dropping in and i get me some engineering materials. As time goes by, I upgrade to a new ship, and when I find something I really like, I visit som engineers to upgrade the ship itself. The materials I obtained while playing the game, delivering food to systems plagued with starvation, medicines to stations with epidemics. I have hunted criminals (and might have murdered a politician, but not lately). I have been to places where no other person have been, and put my name on the maps of the galaxy. I have delivered luxury goods for a funeral, i keep up to date on the major events in the galaxy. I have downloaded the last log from a long dead geologist, that worked on a megaship that recently coasted into a populated system. I have found new friends and went on a bus tour with them, just doing silly stuff and having fun, while also seeing some of the more unique sights the galaxy has to offer. Evert time I log in, I look at where I am, and consider what I feel like doing today. Occasionally I am in the mood to make some big money, so I scoot over to my mining ship and sit for four hours straight lasering asteroids. My friends have shown me a more efficient way to do that, and I might try that the next time I get tired of buzzing around in my exploration ship. Maybe tomorrow. maybe next week. I feel no urgent need to buy a fleet carrier this month, or even this year. But I know that eventually I will be able to afford it. And then what? Then I need to figure out what to do with it, where to go that was not available before. There is a whole galaxy out there.

You can do anything you want but most people have a conscience. So they tend to keep a home base for all owned ships but not get into trouble there much. Although that can be sorted easily if it's got Interstellar Services to clear any bounties. It does need better Content and mechanics...expanded use of cockpit; expand Multicrew by Module Management and Navigation and no barriers to any role; Navy Missions and not just daft rank ups LOL! but in pre-loadouts in loaned ships; allow interactive NPC you can get help from or pirate; etc.

Wanted to come back and say thanks for this video. It's what convinced me that ED was worth giving a go. It is emphatically, a game for me, but I wouldn't have tried it without your content. 160h in, I've been a miner, combat pilot, mission runner, saved people from burning stations. You're right, this is not the game for everyone, but if it gets its hooks in you, damn is it a great title. Standing on a moon 1000ly from earth, alien ruins alighting in the background, as I stare at Sol, selected in high in the sky, but a faint dot; elite makes you feel small. Tiny. Especially in vr, it's masterful how compelling and complete the sense of scale and space is, and how pretty the game is. VR in particular turns elite from a game I would enjoy occasionally, to a place to escape. It's hard to emphasize the weight of a moon just hovering on the horizon in close orbit, slowly setting, the milky way in the background. The fact that it's a binary moon system, and orbits a gas giant, that orbits a sun, and that sun orbits another, and it all moves in real time... Thanks for your part in putting out easily consumable content that walks a user into ED. I understand why ED is designed so opaquely, it's an intentional technical decision to not spell everything out. But your guides really helped it be a more comfortable entry into the series for me

I feel much the same way about Elite VR. As I told someone else, "Lasering space rocks is a lot more interesting when you're in VR." This gets cranked up to 11 when landing on a planet and rolling out in an SRV, seeing the barren dust stretch out in front of you, possibly only illuminated by your headlights, and an alien sky above. Combat is always interesting when you can plausibly look around to visually identify targets and check what they're doing, though a lot of cockpits are not designed for this at all. And somehow docking hasn't gotten old yet in VR, since I'm doing a mix of IFR and VFR things as I approach the pad, peeking out the lower cockpit windows to check my alignment, double checking sensors, pulling the landing gear lever, visually scanning for nearby traffic...

If I could spend a week or two mining painite then buy everything I wanted that would make sense. Hell even if it took 2 weeks to outfit just one of the big 3 that would be fine. But it's not. You have to grind credits, reputation, and then materials which are worst of all. And if you want guardian tech, grind even more. Love the game. Despise the grind with the fury of a neutron star.

I loved Elite in the 80's on a ZX SPECTRUM 48k, now 46 and rarely play games I bought this yesterday. I have a modern PC I built last year for photo editing but rarely gets used. I am waiting on my first ever 43" TV and it is 4k so I decided to buy this and hopefully will enjoy it. I already have Thrustmaster HOTAS flight controls so for only £4.79 including Horizons I have nothing to loose! PC spec is 16GB RAM, Ryzen 5 2600, GTX 1060 6GB

What I really want from this game is the ability to get out of your ship and walk around space stations. It would add so much more to the immersion of this game and it would also make the character customization have more validity to it since right now you can’t see your character or the cool outfits you can get outside the customization menu. Just imagine docking and then leaving your ship and you go walk around the station and talk to mission givers or just sit in a lounge area with other players socializing or go to a vendors to buy or sell items just taking in the atmosphere of it all. Kind of like destiny’s tower. The way I imagine it in my head makes me excited that one day we’ll see this implemented. Maybe next console generation.

I have know idea how I found this channel or became insanely curious about this game in the last week. But in any event, I did, & have been watching several of your videos trying to determine if this was for me. I've been playing No Man's Sky for several months with my 8yo son & have over 400hrs invested, which is of course, a very different kind of game. After watching this video a couple of times, I thought for sure it probably wasn't my cup of tea but man did I still enjoy your videos. I finally caved to my nagging curiosity a few days ago & picked up the base game on my Xbox for $30 figuring it would take some time to learn & hopefully by the end of the month, I'd be ready to dabble in Horizons when that content becomes free if I still was interested. I can't explain it, but there is something deeply satisfying about being in the middle of nowhere just cruising along from system to system or station to station. At face value you'd think being relegated to a cockpit & menus would be boring, but the sights & sounds really drive the experience home. I'm still learning as I go, sometimes getting intensely frustrated at how much there is with next to no explanation, but this is an amazing game. Granted I'm still very early game & stick to mainly completing delivery missions to help me get accustomed to traveling, & just recently tried my hand at using my DSS (thanks to your guide on that as well). Thank you for your guides. Keep up the great work.

At 2:24 you was at Hermitage 5, that is my favourite mining spot, it has a 3 void opal spawns and is usually right next to a system that buys void opals for 1.6mil.

First time I played Elite Dangerous in early 1990s (or late 80s) on ZX Spectrum. Before internet and windows. :) Made my own joystick and controls. Had elite rank.

WOW - I bought my kids a Rift S for their birthday (they're twin 9 year olds). A friend mentioned ED and I jotted it down - and came to this VERY APPROPRIATELY titled video to find out if it will be right for them. While I think it wont be right for them, I'm buying it anyway on the summer sale because at $7 for the base game - my space infatuated son MIGHT love it and if he doesn't - it will be waiting for me come bedtime. Thank you for such an informative video, I love your style and subbed immediately.

I really liked your review-approach, it does what 99% percent of reviewers barely touch on: managing expectations. Decided it its most likely not for me, but i see that it has many aspects that appeal to a certain audience.

3:09 I took up mining early on in the game to get money quickly. Within a week an Anaconda with entirely A rated modules was sitting in my home port a system away from my usual mining spot. I then came to realise other players who took on a different path didn't come by the Anaconda easily.

While it's not quite as complex as I would like, it's well within the the parameters of what has been classically considered a "space sim". The central question to consider when measuring this game's suitability for you is do you like flying spaceships. Not shooting things, not doing crazy maneuvers in asteroid belts, not earning bigger ships, just flying. That is the core experience you need to enjoy to like this game. Having some sort of head tracking gear enhances the experience greatly, and I imagine VR is even better.

This, and if flying ever starts to feel easy, challenge yourself to flight assist off 100% of the time. All of a sudden every ship is unique in how they handle. The game has brilliant flight mechanics.

As recreational gamer I went into solo exploration - no pirate threats, minimal risk. Few advices for newbies after 300+ hr worth of playing. 1. Treat exploration data values as added not target - avoid getting bored quickly. 2. Set up your ship for long journey, A class FSD, fuel scoop and at least one maintenence unit are mandatory. Shields are usable too - weakest but any. 3. Set point on galaxy map as "I want to be here" and set bookmark. 4. Plot route as You wish. 5. Go into black, enjoy views and occasionally scan something. Make some pictures (screenshots) for memory. o7 👍

I love Elite. I had to find out most of the elements of the game by myself, but a good friend of mine who didn't know i played the game taught me how to deep core mine and build exploration ships. Now we are on our first trip to the Galactic Core, then to Beagle Point. We are about 9,000 light years from Colonia. We each put our name on a Black hole so far as well.

Just started, love it and am doing ok for a beginner (thankfully there is no shortage of useful videos). I in a few days made money enough for a fully equipped asp explorer to mine and hope to quickly make enough to get an anaconda. Seriously there’s so much love for this game from the community that it makes the game wonderful to play once you get the hang of it. Just one thing though I feel would be great. Since I’m pretty much playing elite dangerous in vr I’m just in awe of the size of some of these ships. But wouldn’t it be great to explore the inside of the bigger ships, just to comprehend how huge the vessels we fly are. Hell we practically drive ships larger then the international space station and we don’t even realize it.

There is a good video to watch about how to get the best start in Elite Dangerous. You can really get a quick start and have a lot of fun fast by using the methods laid out in it. I got into an Asp rather quickly and find Core mining to be rather fun. Which led to a lot of riches and exploration by jumping to the highest buying stations. I haven't been too far out of the bubble yet, I just got the game not to long ago but it's pretty sweet.

I agree whole-heartedly with the points you pose here. When I feel like I want to explore, I play Elite. It's the only thing that scratches that itch for me. I love LOVE the immersion of the game. UI, atmosphere, attention to detail, the small things. Absolutely wonderful. From the quiet, serene sounds of sitting in normal space to alarms blaring and things shutting down and your canopy breaking while in combat, everything is just blended so PERFECTLY! I only wish Odyssey had a little more polishing time... I don't really like the state it came out in, performance wise :((

New player here. I agree with most of what you said. The most frustrating part of I'm finding so far is the navigation aspect of it. Too close to a gravity well, can't use FSD...then it takes 5 minutes to fly far away enough from a planet to engage FSD. Want to engage FSD? Well sorry there's a planet in the way...use the clunky menu system unlock the waypoint, set a different waypoint, fly toward it enough to get line of sight on where you want to go...disengage FSD, set the waypoint back, and then engage FSD again. I feel like I'm missing something because that's ridiculous.

I played Elite on my Commodore 64. It was all in just wire frame graphics. I loved it. So different from any other game ever written to that time. It also had this same type of open option play mode. I like it this way.

you have put forth a lot of great points both pro and con, but as we watch videos we see only the actions, not the space in between so when people get the game they see the in-between first hand and they get turned off and mad they spent money to get the game, but it's a two-edged sword we need action so people will watch videos and on the other, the videos we watch don't show the slow in between the action, so what's a gamer to do? I bought the game and haven't even left the starter space dock but its still fun and little steps will be the path I take personally, ( I wonder what elite would be like if star trek or star wars was set in this game setting, just a thought ) may the wind be at your back commander

I just bought this for the xbox on sale, and I'm excited! I love space and roleplaying in simulators and sandboxing. But I'm a stay at home mom and visually impaired. So at worst I wasted $9 on a game I may not have the time or visual acuity to play. But if it works out, I'm all in for the exploration and the grind!

I find your points about elite being a mechanics deep game that requires focus and dedication very similar to the milsim genre, you need dedication to learn the controls, weapons, weapon characteristics, etc... I just picked up the game and I'm excited to play it like I was excited to play arma 3 for the first time and five deep into the mechanics and functions of high command, tanks, aircraft, and the logistics of infantry operations

I really enjoyed the review and agree with most of it even after my 1600+ hours with it. My only point of contention is the idea of the dev's communicating with the community, I mean they really don't, recently there even was a really big petition signed by lots of people in the community to see if the dev's would even acknowledge it
@SepulcherGeist5 жыл бұрын
They've certainly cut back on engagement over the years, that's for sure. But I wouldn't count that petition against them, as it doesn't sound like that petition was done in good faith. I doubt I'd have responded to such a thing myself. But they have been less engaged recently anyway. I've noticed that ever since their handling of the Gnosis incident. This is a subject I could do a whole new video on.

Thanks for your video. I remember this game being announced, but then forgot all about it until now. Suddenly I’m curious! I don’t own a PS4 or Xbox, nor a gaming PC, so for me this game would be a big investment as I’d have to buy a console and the game. I loved “Elite” when I was a teenager and must have devoted an extraordinary number of hours to playing it. Watching your video I suspect I’d be similarly absorbed by this game, whether or not that’s a good thing! Thanks for the thoughtful and eloquent video 👍
