Elive is a Debian-based Linux distro that uses the old E16 window manager. A lightweight yet powerful distro, Elive markets itself as "maybe the best Linux OS ever made." Does it live it to the hype? I'm going to take a quick look at Elive 3.8.16 beta.

Ok. I have to admit. You got me on the "Best Linux Distro Ever" tag line. I had to click to find out just how good this thing was and to my surprise, it is quite intriguing. I do have nightmarish flashbacks in configuring all the cool Conky features but I really enjoyed the challenge back in the day. I may give this a download just to play with for old time sake. Distro reviews: all about the GUI and preinstalled packages. Can do this stuff easily and quickly on any major distribution. The term distro has become too broad. Most of these are "preconfigured DE/WM of X distro." I guess that's why I never really understood distro hopping. Almost all of these are using someone else's packages. Packaging is what really matters and where most of the work is involved.

@@shamringo7438 If you want accuracy, though, I recommend emulators that are accepted for TAS. In most cases, that would be BizHawk, but you can check the list in the emulator resources in TASVideos. I haven't used that on Linux yet, I'm just using Mednafen for now because I'm lazy and mostly play on MAME anyway, but you can make it work. If you use Arch or a variant of Arch, it is in the AUR. Why was there no problem in this video with having to use Super or Alt + the function keys to bring up the run prompt and different desktops, but Archcraft was reprimanded for using Alt+F4 for closing programs? Derek likes to use different workspaces and we all know he loves using dmenu to open stuff, so surely those shortcuts are just as important as closing windows. What happened to the function keys being on a second layer of the keyboard and being hard to press? Those were the days of getting my dial up modem working with ppp. Enlightenment was always perty looking and lightweight. Back on a 120 megahertz computer with 32 megs of ram, E16 cruised. I agree about openbox. The next window managers I dipped into were blackbox, fluxbox, and eventually openbox. All had a text based, mouse driven, menu that you cobbled together yourself via a text file. I wonder if those are still around. I shall go a'googlin. Hmm, I wonder if Gkrellm is still kicking? Hi guys, anyone can recommended me a Linux distro for an old pc ? It has only 1gb of ram and dual core cpu, I have messing around because I don’t know what it’s the best 32 bits distro for that... I tried Manjaro 18.04 but once installed i can’t update any packages because of an error of compatibility I think, I hope someone can help me, thanks in advance. Sorry if my English isn’t perfect 😅

I have one of that kind, old laptop from windows xp. Lubuntu works fine, but if you're up for a more technical config, pure Debian can do some very good work. There are probably lot of others very good distro specialize in old config that I don't know, time for a distro hop ^^ .

You might want to try either MX Linux or AntiX. AntiX is lighter with IceWM but MX is probably easier for beginners. Oh yeah MX uses Xfce by default

@@minitos1 and it does not come with too much software preinstalled so it is very light after installation. May be you have to do systemd-analize and systemd-analize blame in order to find out which programs delay boot time and so on but as you said, Peppermint works great.

Have a realy old 32bit rig, AMD XP2000 cpu and one old Geforce 6800 (NV40) and 1GB ram. This rig have some issues running most 32bit Linux distros: - LMDE 4 use too much RAM - 720MB with no other programs running. - Alt Linux - Crashes once I try to opens any windows in desktop, can't get it to work. - Bunsenlabs - Runs realy good and is my goto OS on this rig, but have issues with screen resolution maxes out at 1024x768. - Elive - Seems to work well and also get the full screen resolution (free drivers only). I'm actually installing it as writing this.

@Peter Andrijeczko Okay Guruji, my bad. I don't have that much experience in linux and I'm still trying things out. I like distrohopping cuz we get to know about many other things and features which are in one distro and not in other so that I can add that feature in that distro which I like. That's it

I would've done `echo $SHELL` instead of trying out three shells at random, although that's a unique approach I probably wouldn't have thought of myself. That conky prompt reminded me a lot of CrunchBang, and I agree the menu is a bit openbox-like. It seems like you can change to the 64bit version from the 32bit version, but I'd still prefer they just add a $0 option to their dropdown. I think Ubuntu does that, or at least they did some years ago, where it'd default to asking you to donate but could be avoided.

@@Kampouse By need I mean the linux noobs urge to try every distro under the sun. When I first started with linux I tried basically everything in VMs and then tried my favorites in bare metal, that's how I came to the conclusion to choose the above. Of course my opinion isn't the law and is bound to change at some point but right now those would be my recommendations.

I have to say Elive is AWESOME! It is indeed lLIGHTweight and the Compiz 3D efects don't est resources at all. I really like it. One thing is not clear, it seems that Firefox browser does not seem to require much RAM, as expected, however this time it seems that the CPU gets the load. And on other distributions and Windows, Firefox browser eats up the RAM, but the CPU is on low. This is what confuses me. Besides Enlightment, the one other distro that works great and it looks great (Lxde +Compiz +effects) is Knoppix, but it is mainly intened as a live system. Antix is also really lithtweight (Under 300 Mb of RAM as well), but it is too simplistic and has some limitations (or also that I am not that experienced in Linux to fix them) Lubuntu is also low on resources, but it is slow on startup.
