I found that scene a little weird too, because it was truly no one’s business what Mindy’s financial status was. it also had nothing to do with the band . Second of all, Mindy showed up to the first performance wearing a elaborate outfit and versace necklace. So it shouldn’t be a big surprise .

There was literally no reason to bring Petra into the storyline other than to offend Ukrainians and give this horrible portrayal of eastern europeans in general. They could’ve completely skipped that character and introduce Alfie in million different ways. They had the same issue in the first season, showing the serbian model as a gold digger. I guess somebody in the team is really butthurt about Melania Trump, or something like that.

@zggg89 It should. Millions of people are watching this show right now, and that's how they're going to see Ukrainians. It's easy to say, that's just one character, it doesn't mean anything, but it does. It really does, when we're being underrepresented and misrepresented most of the time. The situation keeps getting better overall, but this writing is very harmful and super ignorant.

@zggg89 your argument is... privilege olympics? because someone else might be more privileged than you, what they say doesn't matter anymore? also not sure you got the point of the comment. you said you showed your friends the character and they didn't find it ignorant. what friends? ukrainian friends? or just some people who happen to act like the character? you said it doesn't offend you. okay? you're not ukrainian (and neither am i) so who are you to speak on their behalf? or is it just because they're white? and yet, when the first season came out, the french (who as far as i know, correct me if i'm wrong, are still predominately white) were (rightfully so) offended because the show is ignorant in every possible way and that is acceptable to you, but it's not acceptable when it's someone from somewhere you don't know much about. not sure how educated you are on the situation and past of eastern europe, my guess not very much, but it is very much different from the westn. so please, respectfully, shut the fvck up.

To be fair, the my first month moving to England, I got scammed by a Polish chick, who pretended to help me buy a train ticket. Both the receipt and ticket are printed on the same card board paper. I got to kings cross and was told what I had was the receipt 😂. I was completely shocked and narrated the ordeal, to which they were very understanding and let me through the gate. My cousin later explained the dynamics of London and what to look out for.

Am the only one who finds it ironic that Emily says "Ever since I moved to Paris my life has been dramatic and crazy and I used to be decisive" but all of the drama and craziness is her fault?? Emily lacks so much self awareness and while the show did improve, the ONE major flaw is that the main character is poorly written and unlikable with little to no depth (Lily Collins is lovely tho, no hate towards her!!). She's always talking about how she had a life planned back in Chicago, but we only ever saw like five minutes of her life beforehand? We never saw her relationship with her friends, family, or colleagues back in Chicago save for Madeline and Doug. It's so hard to feel bad for her especially when we're not shown that she's a good person, we're just told.

Yes yes yes yes yes! Wasn’t Emily all about bringing Camille and Gabriel back together at the start of the season? And then all of a sudden she is disappointed that both G & C are moving in together in the end. Gabriel pissed me off too, but Emily was hot and cold on him and confused him as well, so I’m not surprised he got back with Camille. And Camille is all of a sudden the villain according to the show and US media? Camille has every right to be angry and have revenge because she was cheated on! At least she fights for what she wants and doesn’t play hot or cold like Emily. Although if I was Camille, I would just find another guy. And just in my opinion, Alfie, Sylvie, Julien are being ruined by Emily’s craziness. They deserve better. Emily’s happy go lucky positiveness is being overshadowed by her selfishness and privilege.

What did you think of Mindy's band figuring out her father was rich? I thought they were too harsh on her. Mindy is not cosplaying as poor. She is estranged from her father and is trying to carve her own way forth. She lives in a small apartment with Emily so she does not reap any benefits of having a rich father. For god sakes she sits outside a toilet for a few euros for half the season.

Emily is my least favorite character of them all. She stabbed Camille in the back, had no sense of right and wrong or what so ever, was a complete hypocrite throughout the whole 2 season, lying to Alfie and Camille, who absolutely did not deserve this anyhow. Both were kind and generous to her and showed her nothing but respect and love. Gabriel is also an awful character - playing with Camille and not respecting her feelings as if she is some kind of a toy. This is not okay people! Please stop romanticizing and normalizing betrayal! On the other hand I love Sylvie - authentic, unapologetic, intelligent woman with depth of character.

Gabriel is the main problem. He didn’t tell Emily in the first place that he had a girlfriend, who was Camille. I think if he told Emily in the first place, it wouldn’t be that difficult. Also, in the ending when Emily came to his apartment and confessed her feelings for him he didn’t tell her that Camille was in the room. And Emily was also the problem, she never told Camille that she slept with her boyfriend until Camille pointed it out. And she thought if she sends a letter to her would fix it… like how tf would it help.

I also disliked Gabriel. I wouldn't want to date a guy that flirts openly to any other pretty girl he finds, then cheats and doesn't care that much about it. For a 5 year old relationship it felt so empty and off. It feels sociopathic, the lack of emotion and care. And as a French speaker it's painful to hear those Americans complaining about my language and being so proud of "speaking French" but it's terrible and they make no effort, the pronunciation was so bad I had to read the subtitles to understand what they were trying to say. I like that Pierre Cadault put back the pregnant lady in her place regarding this. It was time. I never see people speaking French properly in movies or series and it annoys me so much. They are so smug about it and boast about speaking French when in reality they can just say 3 words and with such a wrong accent that it's not even understandable. It feels disrespectful. The opposite is not true, strangers always speak a perfect English and I would like for once that the people do their homework about it better

@Monanged
@Monanged 2 жыл бұрын
I was not talking about real life and how French people act regarding languages differences. I was talking about movies and series. I'm not French myself and I don't live in France (I'm Belgian, from the French speaking part). I was just talking about the fact that in movies and series, any time someone foreign needs to speak French, it's always awful but everyone pretends like it's amazing and gloat about it. That's annoying that's all, nothing dramatic, just annoying. I'm not talking at all about how French people are towards foreigners that try to speak their languages or not, or how rude they can be, that's another topic and not being French and not living there, it's not really my place to talk about. And yes the actors are truly French, that's indeed an improvement worth mentioning 👏 I'm talking about the American actors (and Mindy, her French is also awful). And yes I recognized that the pregnant lady wasn't seen as good for how she spoke, but it took such a long time. They build it up for so long as a fluent speaker that it was like a slap in the face to see again that it was bullshit (hence how nice it was when Pierre spoke up about it and it's true it wasn't represented as something positive about her in the end, the build up was just too much for the result). I was more ranting in general, I watch a lot of movies and series, all in English as my partner and I don't speak each other's language, and I see often the trope of the American person boasting and saying they speak French but in reality, just saying 3 bad sentences. It always annoys me because I like this language and I would like it better researched and taken more seriously from the producers that's all, people do the work for English after all. And it seems to have triggered a bit, I'm not saying people can't try and make mistakes, and have difficulties prononciating foreign words. Absolutely not ! Learning is hard and if you're trying you can be proud already! In real life I'm happy of anyone trying even if it's wrong sometimes, I mean I live in another country and I'm bad aswell at their language which I'm learning, I know how it is ahah. I just don't like the attitude in movies and shows. Feels generally disrespectful and not self aware about how wrong it sounds. I just want people in movies to really speak French when they say they do 😁 I guess the worst thing is when other characters are like "wow that was beautiful, so impressive that you can speak another language ", all starry eyed, whilst in reality it was gibberish ahah It's just that Emily, her Chicago boss and Mindy kinda had that attitude and their French was horrendous, barely understandable and we are supposed to believe one is almost a year in class, the other one fluent, and the other one living there for a long time working with kids (so should be able to speak their language fluent. I know she said she taught them Korean, but she must first talk to them in French for that)

As a French girl living in Paris, I would say season 2 has definitely improved compared to season 1, even though I agree it's nowhere near perfect (or at least "as good as it had the potential to be" like you said). I would say they finally got the French characterization right this time (ex: when Madeleine say "I know you French love to say No" and Sylvie replies "Not really, it's just in the way you ask..." that is way more accurate to the French culture and it's a new take on the stereotype of French people always being mean and angry: I don't think I have seen this point of view depicted in american media before, at least). The one part that made me laugh out loud for several minutes though, is when Luke complains to Emily about the exercise bikes saying "real biking is outside along the seine, that's how we Parisians do it, and that's better!" and then 3 meters away he gets into it with another biker and they start insulting each other in french, and then he turns to Emily and waves with a big smile!!! I looooved it, that is litterally the best representation of a Parisian I have ever seen 😍 We French people are all about contradictions, and we love it!

when camille’s mom pulled her aside to say “i’ll help you get him back, just do exactly as I say” and then later is treating emily a little weirdly on her visit, I was expecting some big crazy dramatic plot to be schemed up. not a lie over a pinky promise? I ended up disappointed. this show is out of touch and outlandish at times and yet they couldn’t make the drama match? I expected camille’s mom’s plan would be super crazy and at some point camille would wake up and realize… gabrielle and emily aren’t even worth the effort. neither of them care about her and she could be off finding people who do. and like abandon the crazy scheme her mom planned and that would be her character growth and exit from the show. or if she didn’t leave that we would at least get some crazy drama like gabrielle thinking emily is sabotaging his work and emily getting fired/in trouble at work and threatened with having to return home. then camille would have gabrielle to herself, you know? like some actual tv drama level backstabbing and scheming

Omg, I have said this so many times. Emily is so frustratingly unlikeable!!!!!!! I have tried - really tried with all my cold, cold heart - to like her from all kinds of perspectives and to exercise lots of empathy. But by the good graces of all the goods, I fucking do not like her no matter how many sweet smiles she gives everyone. I don't hate her, but she is so hard to like or even respect. It's like that girl you just don't wanna be around - not in a hateful way but in a "nah, i don't have time and energy to give this person". Honestly, Sylvie's story is way more interesting. At this point, I just glaze over Emily and Mindy's sub-plot; the two of them are the most boring characters ever. I literally fast-forwarded all the Mindy singing, an absolute waste of production money and time in every episode. Demonstration of a Ukrainian woman in the series offended and rooted a lot of people in my country. It was soy sed for me, because l true to learn four languages and it scares me, can people outside my country see me like that? National stereotypes are bad, they scare, because no matter how hard you try, you are still seen as a typical Petra or a trophy wife. I understand that no one represents you better than you yourself, and therefore I draw comics with Ukrainian characters, and try to write good stories, in the hope that people will be able to see not only national stereotypes.

I was shocked when I was watching this show becouse it looks like producers never went to France and have deep hatered towards other nationalities other then American. I have never met one rude person here- people are so polite, so helpful and it is a country full of diversity. No one cares how you look like, where are you from, everybody minds their own business, they are very friendly and they love to show foreigners their country, food and help with learning French language. They are also very open to other cultures and like to ask about your culture to learn and NOT just decide based on stereotypes like in this disgusting show. In my experiance out of 5 people on the street 3 will be foreigners and 2 would be French, that is how diverse it is here. I am seen here just as a European, not slavic or thropy wife or anything like that. Furthermore, my fiance is from Middle East and he never felt any racism or bad treatment here, not once, he really enjoys living in France.

Does the character have zero ability to see that it’s wrong to use people like that? A narc? Sociopath? Extremely unrealistic too, the tiny apartment but huge expensive wardrobe of costume changes that there’s no room to store in the tiny apartment lol! I agree with you on pretty much everything expect Alfie. I don't see the point in him as a love interest especially a long distance one. That worked out for the Chicago bf so well after all. Also just makes the show way more soapy by using a convoluted love triangel plot again. He was a good antagonist at the beggining, I loved his disinterest in Emily and Paris altogether bc sometimes it's just an annoying job you have to power true. He wasn't there for romance. He was there out of obligation and a paycheck for a few weeks. It makes sense he is not interested in making friends. Not to mention how fun it was to watch Emily humiliate herself to catch his interest. Than all of a suden whitout any change/growth on Emily's part he suddenly is interested. Oww man. What a waste. There was an opportunity to develop a slow burn love/hate relationship but instead they went with the tried old route of him falling for her. When he asked her over I know they are going to hook up. I tought ok an another poor basterd captivated by a pretty girl with shitty dating life. Then he ghosted her and that was so funny, unfortunately it didn't last long. An another wasted opportunity to teach Emily a lessons and make her reflect a bit on her choices. Insted it ends in that ridiculous long term relationship proposal. I just know he will end up like the Chicago guy. Poor sod. What Emily should do is just go back home and reflect on herself before getting into dating again. Obviously that won't happen.

I don’t understand why Emily is forcing the friendship with Camille, she needs to take accountability and walk away from the friendship. I just did not find it realistic.I also did not understand how we were supposed to believe she went away on a paid trip with some friends, instead of going on the vacation, then we find Slyvie and her husband mysteriously at the same location. it was nice to get some immersion via the language and be reminded that we are in paris. I dont know if this was filmed during the pandemic or half and half but nothing was fully developed especially the plot line for the show. the most exciting part for me was the last episode and when Gabriel mentioned his dish with tripe saying it came from his hometown. Im not sure if that is a true statement regarding dish itself, but it would be nice to explore french culture through food especially since he is a chief. there is so much to explore there and give the audience a bit of a better look into the culture, instead of the usual "we use fresh in season ingredients" as a copout. I have these same feelings regarding the fashion aspect. Very underutilized to the extent that it can be. Mainly I didn't really care for her relationship troubles etc. Obviously its not supposed to be some hard hitting drama/comedy, but could still use some more thoughtout then the very obvious amercian v french narrative. I feel like the french people actually spoke more french than in season 1 which I enjoyed very much. The only reason why I kinda like Emily is because of how likable Lily Collins is to me. Otherwise the character is hella annoying and also not as nice as they keep telling us. I saw videos and comments were people shamed Camille for humiliating Emily on her birthday and breaking the pact. It's unbelievable to me how people see Camille as a villian now. They seem to forget that 1) she was the one who got betrayed by her boyfriend and friend and 2) Emily was about to break the pact herself when she showed up on his door. Camille was just faster. Also how Emily tried to keep Camille for moving on just because she was feeling bad - how selfish can u be. Also Mathieu had the best scene when he left Emily on the train. He was so right! Even we didn't see much of him that season, this made me respect him so much. The most interesting character on the show imo is Sylvie, although I don't get the situation with her still-husband.

I love your review. This is exactly what I thought of after watching the show. Everything! From Emily being ditsy & gullible and Camille being likeable to stooping down to her level. My controversial comments here: Why does Alfie like a less hot version of Simon Basset Duke of Hastings in Bridgerton? I know everybody likes Mindy, but I don’t. I mean, she’s also persuading Emily in taking Gabriel back. In the last episode, she said something like “follow your heart.” She’s a friend of Camille yet sides with Emily most of the time, not rationalizing what Camille would feel. On the contrary, I like that she warned Emily that French girls are unforgiving and “why the heck did you invite camille in your vacation with Matthieu.”

Idk I still think the show is meant to be a lot less deep than people are making it out to be it clearly isn’t here to teach us about French culture or any woke topics it is here to depict a spoiled girl and her fantasy life in a fantasy Paris. It’s like sex and the city and how ignorant those girls are idk why Emily gets so much hate. Her plot with Gabriel is annoying because he is annoying and he was clearly playing them both and almost wanting to have them both at once. I can understand why she didn’t instantly know what to do I mean she had a crush on the bf of a girl she genuinely liked and got caught in it and didn’t know how to get out. She did drag it in way too long and the trying to get them back together was almost more salt on the wound like girl just walk away. But I’m glad you mentioned how unlikable Gabriel is because I’ve hated him since the start. He treats Camille like he doesn’t care about her at all but then keeps going back to her when he can’t get Emily. I do think the characters were given a bit more depth this season but again it is meant to just be a silly light watch and I’m ok with that. I also like the fashion again like in sex and the city the girls always dressed sort of flamboyant and nobody criticized that. I really don’t get it like people will put up with a show like shameless where all the characters constantly make the worst possible decisions for seemingly no reason but everyone loves and praises them but they absolutely hate Emily... just make me think is a bit hateful. Overall I would give it a 5/10 I mean it’s not meant to be a masterpiece just a light entertaining show that is quick to get through and I will probably watch it til the end.

Sorry for my English. It’s not perfect. The most annoying thing for me was as Alfie told Emily that he’s staying in Paris longer cause he’s serious about their relationship and she should be honest with him and she gives him the feeling that she’s on the same page and then few days later she wants to get back with Gabriel. I don’t get it! Maybe we’re gonna see Emily decide to leave Paris but she’s gonna come back after a short time

Emily going: no he still loves you, hold on to hope" is this typical toxic positivity and guilt, where you think you help a person and don't hurt them, but in the end it might hurt them even more AND it hurts yourself (As we ve seen in the end of season 2)

At some point during the restaurant launch, Camille offered to ´help´ by serving the guests some Champere, which I thought would be an obvious ploy of her to sabotage the launch, since it´s been made clear over and over again that the champagne is gross as hell. But it never went anywhere!!! That just seems like such inconsistent writing. Boo. Also the band never noticed Mindy was always wearing super expensive designer clothing? Yeah right.

I never thought of having to watch Emily and think that I had to like her just because she was a woman, but you’re absolutely right about having to support her as a main character and keep portraying her as good. I think the reason Emily‘s actions are so jarring is because she’s supposed to be the main character and since childhood the main characters in all of our story books have been good people and defenders of justice and righteousness. Our main characters do the right thing to the best of their ability and learn their lesson and except accountability. I actually find it very refreshing to have a protagonist that’s just a bad person. A protagonist is only that, a protagonist. Maybe we should just change that term to main character because by naming someone a PROtagonist that must mean that there must be an ANtagonist in which the writers have made everyone else to get in the way of what Emily wants. Not every main character has to be liked, not every main character has to be a model citizen. But now that you mention it, is she truly that awful of a person or is it because she’s a woman that she gets so much more vitriol than if she were a man? Buuuuut, I’ve been watching a lot of videos and everyone pretty much agrees that Gabriel is a pretty awful person too so I’m glad that there’s no double standard when it comes to how bad they are as people.

Ok the love triangle or is it love square? This is Darren Star doing a discount version of sex and the city in Paris. Emily is Carrie. Gabriel is Big. Camille is Natasha (who deserves better). Wish she just moved on from Gabriel completely. Alfie is Aidan. Now we have to deal with this back and forth for 4 more seasons. I ship Camille and Mathieu at this point. There is a good story there, but the writing is not focused on good stories. The three characters I like Camille, Luke, and Mathieu. I liked Emily at first until I saw all of Carrie’s bad qualities in her and I stopped caring.

If you want a dive into parisian office life, I highly suggests the french TV serie « 10 pour cent » (Call My Agent on netflix). It is about an artistic agents company, whose clients are played by famous french actors in their own role (Isabelle Adjani, Jean Dujardin …) I don’t know if the show was broadcasted outside of France, but if you get the chance …

some thoughts on the criticism of the first season of Emily in Paris: can we all please stop calling the misrepresentation shown in Emily in Paris of living in Paris and French ppl racism? Because it's really not. I also think its hilarious how outraged white ppl (like myself) get when they feel misrepresented, while we as white ppl aka media, films, politics etc. are treating BPoCs like trash. Emily in Paris is definitely not an accurate representation of French culture, but lets all reflect on how one trashy Netflix show makes some white ppl act like they are actual victims of racism. Yes, being misrepresented sucks and you have the right to be mad about it. Maybe we should use those feelings to get some perspective and to think about the decades of actual racism in media we all collectively enjoyed or at least just accepted by looking the other way.

What’s annoying me most is that although two people (Gabriel and Emily) were involved in cheating on Camille, only the girl is made responsible for that. What about Gabriel? Nobody questions his behaviour, he just seems to be neutral, while two women are fighting over his unfaithful personality. The show even represents him as if he was a prize to win. I don’t like that Camille is even trying to win him back. She deserves so much better. While there are many cliches they brought on this show, there‘s also the internalised misogyny in our society that’s portrayed so accurately. They could have done better.

One of the most unrealistic things in this season (that I haven’t watch but every woman will tell you same things) is how the f three woman walk alone at night will wearing glitters all over them and are not scared ? Like one of the biggest problems for woman here right now are how much we get catcalled, drudged and r*ped and never this situation will happen without them being at least a little bit stressed out. So here they talk about how much « mean » we are but not of real social issues ? Sorry I’m getting a little bit heated but it’s important we talk about this stuff.

I kind of felt bad for Madeline because she was trying to make the company better and make sure they don’t go bankrupt because people are taking advantage of them. With the amount of clients they have, I think they will be fine. I hate that they made Madeline like Emily just to show Emily changed. I think she had her heart in the right place, but everyone was against her to just be against her.

For me also ridiculous is that in the show characters (especially Emily) wear extravagance, "chic", elegant cloth (like from the red carpet (every time)). There are no cosy cloth, basic t-shirt and jeans. I know that there are working for a luxury French marketing company, but still (even Kate Middelton wear jeans).

Spoilers (obviously) Some positives: 1) I did appreciate they were using the French language more. 2) I liked learning a little more about the other characters. 3) I liked that Camille didn't forgive Emily right away. 4) I really liked that they made Madeline look brutish & rude. Was it intentional? I don't know but she really was rude so that made the French characters look even more likeable. 5) I like that Sylvie took control and is going to create a new company. Power move. Now... I do find Emily annoying for many of the reasons you mentioned. After Camille found out about them she had asked about Emily's feelings and she lied again. She should have at least at that point said she had mixed feelings or something. Be honest because at that point she had to. So now is this stupid love triangle going to be dragged out to season 3? And I hate Gabriel as a character now... I liked him in the first few episodes of season 1 but as soon as they made him a love interest I got bored. Lost interest in him by the end of season 1. Now I too find him kinda gross. I like Alfie's character but hate that they had Emily strung him along. Their relationship started so truthful too and then of course they had to just string him along. So sick of shows doing that. I really liked Petra's character at the beginning. She was adorable. The shoplifting thing was stupid. I mean...WHY. Why couldn't they have just done a weird misunderstanding like their crappy french Petra thinks Emily offered to pay or something and walks out with something....or vice versa then they take stuff back and it becomes a funny story at the start of a new friendship. A friendship which would have let Emily understand more about the world & that part of Europe & possibly learn a little of the Slavic language. But NO they had to just do a cheap shoplifting storyline... gag me. I also hate that everyone falls in love with Emily. She's not likeable. Also, does Emily have any friends in the USA? We never had even a glimpse of her friends there. No phone conversations...no friends coming to visit. And she doesn't ever talk about being home sick or is ever seen talking to her parents. Nothing. I think that's a big mistake because love her or hate her, seeing those things would humanize her more. Lazy writing

Can we also talk about the fact that Emily was trying to get Camille and Gabriel back together ONLY because she knew she was going to be leaving Paris? She was constantly giving Camille hope that they will get back together but as soon as she finds out she may be staying in Paris she goes to get her man Gabriel and has the audacity to actually act hurt when she sees that Camille and Gabriel got back together. Like she instantly went to get him not caring about Camille one bit even though she had been giving her all this hope? What a shitty thing to do.
