It seems like Facebook and Twitter and KZbin want it both ways. For years they've claimed Safe Harbor, saying they are just a platform and are not legally responsible for what people post. But, one the other hand, have no problem saying how they want the platform to be and what kinds of topics are allowed and what kinds are not. It seems to me they either need to be legally responsible (which would put them out of business) or they need to be hands off, but they should not be allowed to have it both ways.

I couldn't agree more. The only thing i would disagree on is the way Facebook treats there actual customers as well. I was spending over $500 a day on Facebook ads not that long ago and I had well over 1 million followers on about 3 pages on Facebook's platform yet i was getting more personalized service and physical human time devoted to me at my local coffee shop then what i was getting at Facebook. I have never been more discussed with the level of service i have received with any company in my life. They would close down my ad accounts, pages and groups without reason or explanation. They impose ambiguous and ridiculous "rules" around the content that's allowed on there platform and refuse to assist you in any way in upholding those standards, yet they will remove your page or group from there platform if you do uphold them. When they remove a piece of content that you published on a page they ban you from doing anything on there platform for 30 days (including contacting Facebook's support to resolve the issue). They are the biggest company in the world and they don't have 24 hour support. When it comes to issues you actually need resolved there support staff are either basically powerless to help you in any way or they just flat out refuse to help you. Its always "another department" that deals with whatever your particular issue is and they will not put you in contact with anyone in this "other department". The company as a whole has a level of arrogance that i have never seen before in my life. I am no longer a customer with Facebook not because it wasn't profitable for me, but simply because i refuse to be treated that way.
@MikeGastin
@MikeGastin 5 жыл бұрын
Wow, Samuel. So, the arrogance runs throughout the whole company. They seem to behave more like a totalitarian government and less like a company with customers to take care of. Even so, they keep making a ton of money. I wonder how long this can continue. BTW, $500 a day is a pretty big media spend. FB must have been an important part of your business. What ad platform did you replace it with?
@amerphartriple7320
@amerphartriple7320 5 жыл бұрын
There is no "customer service" because you're not the customer. They would rather sanitize FB to make it look exactly like they want it to look for advertisers than help users/the product stay on their site. They just don't give a damn is what it is. Why spend the time educating the product? They just get rid of what they feel they don't want their site to have, and they just shut the accounts down and don't pay personnel to deal with those they have shut down. They are training you like a seal, and in 30 days if you're a good seal, you'll get a fish if you do the dance for them. If you don't perform like they want you to, you are fishbait.

I agree with you, I do Facebook ads as part of my day job. Even when I told Facebook I might lose my job if you do this, and I am willing to work with them to correct any mistakes I may have made, they refused to tell me exactly what I have done wrong. I hate Facebook and I hope they die.

For me, the second they decided that they weren't in the business of connecting friends but rather, in the business of promoting adverts and arguments, they lost me. When a companies entire business model is based around promoting negativity, to boost user engagement, they're backing something entirely unsustainable. Maybe they could have hidden their agenda better if they'd actually enforced their own user guidelines but as anyone who's reported antagonistic content, multiple times, knows, Facebook actually wants as much complaint bait as they can get, on their platform and all the 'we're sorry' 'we'll get better' sentiments is hollow, when they keep doing the exact same thing.
@MikeGastin
@MikeGastin 5 жыл бұрын
Tom, that's an interesting take and it makes sense. The odd thing about the negativity is they seem to be rather one-sided in the kinds of negativity they will allow or not. The company strikes me as too political.
@tomteatom
@tomteatom 5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't necessarily say it's too political as such, it's more that the thrust of what it promotes is specifically designed to be provocative to those who are the most vocal, which causes a domino effect, embroiling more and more people. Politics itself is really just the act of taking everyone's moral perspective (which we all share because it's evolved in) and trying to shape it to favor a specific goal through emotional maniuplualtion. So there isn't really a right and a left at play on fb, as such, just the differing ways we react to emotional manipulation. I think it's fair to assume there's a lot more psychologists on the payroll at facebook than politicians.
@MikeGastin
@MikeGastin 5 жыл бұрын
Tom, all valid points, and I'll agree in theory. But, in practice it's not quite how you see it, IMO. Here's why: Yes, FB employs more psychologists than politicians, BUT, every single employee of FB, including those psychologists, have political views. My assumption is that FB has an underlying political culture that informs what content gets a pass and what content gets heavy scrutiny and is even censored. Even so, your point is well taken.

FB is very heavily busy sanitizing its content so that their CUSTOMERS/ADVERTISERS think it's a great place to plop down their content (and money). They're just out there making it look like an advertiser's paradise, having no interest in manintaining a free speech environment. I give Amazon about 5 years before it announces it has hired the best young social media gurus out there to create a new platform based on what USERS WANT (their business model!) and everyone will just abandon FB overnight like they did MySpace. AOL used to be king, along with Compuserve and Prodigy.... MySpace used to be king...... Yahoo was the cat's meow.... Dogpile was the best search engine for a spell..... KINGS DO FALL! Facebook (and social media in general) made us feel like celebrities, it was exciting having our content read and liked by other people. Inevitably, the bubble burst and people realised that nobody really cares what they had for dinner, they are just liking your posts for the reciprocal like on their posts. One this realisation has manifested itself, you no longer feel like a celebrity, instead you realise that you have wasted your life posting meaningless content. It's like the younger generation with their Instagram feeds, eventually they'll just grow out of it. Social media will always be with us. However, in 10 years time, I very much doubt it's use will be anywhere near what it is today. It will continue to decline and reach a plateau. The end result is it will only be used for what it was intended, planning social events and posting in local interest groups. People often blame the decline on algorithms but I guarantee it's for the reasons above. It was something new and exciting and now it's not. There is nothing that Facebook can do to do stop it, it's social media that's in decline not just Facebook. Of course this isn't true for the younger Gen Z, but that's because for them (Instagram / social media) is still new and exciting. If facebook want to survive, they should accept this fate and downsize their platform and its features.

I came to KZbin looking for videos of the bad algorithms that FB has. My account got blocked a few days ago, I can't do anything with it until the next month. I uploaded a meme, and then got a notification, it said that my post was against their rules. I asked for a revision, and nothing happened. The fact that they can block my account and not giving me an explanation except for the "It goes against the rules" is pretty annoying and makes me hate FB. About two months ago I got blocked for a image of two girls kissing, the only reason I think it could be against the rules is because the hand of one girl was in the ass of the other girl. That time I asked a revision too, saying that I had nothing wrong and it wasn't against the rules, they kinda agreed since the next day I could send messages, comment and react to the posts, but I still could post for 15 days. I asked why and got no response from them. I has happened to me several times and it is really frustrating. I've seen groups and pages being removed by the FB algorithms and the reason is "It goes against or it could be against our rules". I was in a group that got deleted without advice and didn't even say why was that. And now that you mention it, I haven't seen any posts of my family in a while, instead I get recommendations of pages I don't even follow, and I can't even watch 10 seconds of the video without getting an ad. Probably my father uploaded a photo of his new job done, but FB thinks it's better to see an post of a random guy in a group that it's 4 days old. I just feel like they are doing all this manipulate the people and hide the fact that they have been sued a lot of times. But guess what, I accepted their terms. Fortunately, I don't upload personal information since 2014.

It’s a much better platform even though still owned by Facebook. I’d love to tell you my brand but it’s quite known out here and back in London and Los Angeles (where it’s based in all 3 of those areas) and don’t want to broadcast it out on here 🤓 So if there’s a personal way to communicate with you (email) that would be great as always good to gain more and different knowledge from other businesses and fellow entrepreneurs.

Regardless, I can see where it can create problems for charities.

You completely misunderstand why Facebook controls our feed and prevents it from appearing in chronological order. It has nothing to do with them distrusting our judgment or thinking they can curate it better. It's because it ensures that _there will be something different at the top of our feed every time we visit Facebook,_ which makes it more addictive and compels us to spend more time browsing. If we only saw the most recent content, for most of us, there wouldn't be much new activity, and we would adapt to checking it less often. I'm sorry, but you have no insight into this topic at all.

Facebook knows your education, employment, family members, zip code, browsing habits, music preferences, etc. I know they can get some of this through Insta, but not as easily. Hey there. Have you explored Mastodon? It is like a social media platform, but rather than being controlled by some big tech company, it works more like a federation of private servers. So, you join a server-some are general, some are interest based, etc. then you have a nice network within that server, but at the same time you can go out into the "fediverse" and connect with people from other servers. It's quite cool, very active, and there seems to be a server/community for everyone: gamers, conservatives, artists, meme lords, and the list goes on and on. Do a Google search and read up on it. I think you might like what you find.

version 3 [it's not a great idea to shadowban/shadowcensor* your customers. especially when the customer is giving information that is valid, and the answer to a/the question. even tho the customer is giving the information as the customer sees fit, rather than as the seller sees fit. edit update - this has been up for 5 days and appears when I'm logged into the account, but doesn't appear publically by the way it might be worth mentioning in your video info that comments are moderated before publishing - so people know] riiight... I found this video from a "is facebook dying" google. I found a couple of other videos about "is facebook dying", ironically featuring chirpy marketing analysts, or whatever they are. alright. it's really not that complicated (to quote the dude from Jurassic Park) there are 2 types of people on 'net. people who want to sell you things, and people who 'might' want to buy things. what these 2 people want, is not mutually compatible. the people who want to sell you things, want to know everything about you. the people who 'might' want to buy things, don't want those people, to know everything about you. Facebook only gives a rats cack about the people who want to sell things. Facebook is now asking people to submit telephone numbers, and PHOTO'S of themselves, to "prove who they are". A lot of people who use Facebook, don't want Facebook (or anyone else for that matter) to know a lot about them. this means everyone who doesn't want their information known, is probably going to depart Facebook in one form or another. so all those chirpy marketing analysts who's only role call is "how to reach out to customers" ('reach out' is such a s##t marketing term), are forgetting while their purpose in life is to reach out to 'customers', those 'customers' (aka 'net users) might not want to be reached out to. (ie, 1- they aren't customers, 2- they don't want to be 'reached out to' -- in the real world I think they call it 'contacted') ('reaching out' is when someone grabs your ****, isn't it?) (as someone companies would definitely consider a "customer", I'd consider myself a customer AFTER I've done a google search for "camera under £500", not beforehand. also I'm not sure why, after buying a camera, I start to get adverts for "do you want to buy a camera". no. I don't want to buy a camera after I've bought a camera) another odd one. I bought a £4 dog collar from ebay. the next advert I get, is for a £2,000 vetinery table (the ones vets have in their surgery). so..not entirely sure what the algorithms are doing I mean legend has it that in the film the social network, Mark Zuck once said "adverts are lame"....until they are adv£rt$. then they stop being l$m£. mind you the lawyer grad also told him "you're not an a5 5hole Mark (you're just trying to be one)"- quote from the film. the jury's still out on the first bit. alexa.com (who've turned s##t recently, but can be half useful) indicates Facebook.com is not on a positive direction slope. by removing all "non verified" accounts, Facebook may have just shot itself somewhere more important than the foot. FB might be about to find out just how many people use it's website. i.ibb.co/mSxKG9q/stats-facebook-18-10.png of course websites come and go but the companies behind them move to other things. Facebook might myspace it, but Mark Z will probably start something else (not incl insta, whatsapp, et cets. Libra god'elp) kicking your users out as not being genuine, as checked by 100% automated software is an interesting way to treat your income. I saw 100's of fake accounts being generated to react to posts in 2014. so 5 years is an interesting "lag" to develop technology to "detect fakery". nah. it's to have accurate info to sell. Up to 2012 I used an initial as my surname. I logged in one day 2012-ish, and was told to use my full name. which I didn't want to do. but did. - remember in 2012 FB didn't quite have the sh1t-rep it does now. I wouldn't be surprised if Fb generates some sort of algorithm, that says "if our algorithms aren't giving you at least 3 adverts per day, you're not using your account properly and we'll close it". golden goose definitely comes to mind (I mean, Mark, FB's "slogan" is "connecting people". Mark does realise, yes, that quite a lot of the world, let's say 15%, talks absolute s##t quite a lot of the time, and you need an 'alternate' account to inform that person of this fact) I also (as a "customer") don't like the way that when I browse pages, the chat window comes up and says "Typically replies within a few mins...hours...days" etc. not really fair on the page owner. They'll reply when they're **in' well ready to? yes the 'net is 24 hours. no, people aren't. I'd rather get useful, 'ready' info after a day, than rushed, "hustled" info in 10 minutes. quite honestly, I'd want the option of disabling "message seen". I know the message has got there. that's what messaging is for. it doesn't actually mean "message seen" - all it means is the mouse has been moved while the message has been on-screen. "it said you got my message?" "sorry, the screen went all corrupted/Facebook froze and I had to reboot/no, I didn't get it?" also it can be quite irritating when you're browsing a page, and the message window comes up automatically. I£mean,$yes,£yes,$we£know$why£it$does. but.it's.quite.annoying. I'm sure Many hours of beanbag-latte enabled focus groups were spent to implement the..'feature'. no. if I want to send a page a message, there is a little button that says "message". (you know...like...Facebook doesn't have itself) Facebook, how about taking ALL the "little features" you think are "valuable", taking ALL the resources you use to make those little features, take 100x 1%, and pile ALL those resources into making one big feature: support@facebook.com. I know that you really, really really don't want to do it. and I know that you USED to do it (because 8 years ago I got an email reply from a human-person at facebook). "We're not going to invent cars, because we know people would use them". You get the impression half the -meetings- focus groups at Facebook are about whether to change the 'X' graphic for the close window, rather than to.....discuss whether their -customers- resources should be able to contact them or not I'm also pretty certain that FB uses some throttling scripts, so that some pages deliberately take between 30 secs-1 minute to load up. facebook must *really* not want it's users. it's just seemed to disable some searching for anything pre-2017 FB's track record - "view as" - a way to see what your profile looks like to a specific user (because Facebook's "privacy" settings are so incomprehensible that it's not obvious what other people can see). "view as" was removed as a few years ago because the code that made the feature, made it possible for someone else to gain access to your account. also try running facebook in a chrome window that only takes up the bottom 3/4 of your screen (ie, 1/4 screen desktop visible along the top). strange scrolling problems when you start navigating around facebook. have a page open that has many photo's? leave it for 5 minutes, the page will have reset itself. they really haven't tested their code, and this is after 10 years. to be honest, it may be a chrome thing. point is.....I *don't trust facebook* (I do....so far...trust paypal) paypal recently refunded me £500 after fraud. would I trust facebook & libra to refund me £500 after fraud?.....no..I Wouldn't Some part of me wonders if Mark Z isn't worried if FB is dying on it's xrse. he's made his £$Xillions from it, he's moving on to other projects. (do I use Facebook now, about 20% of the amount I used to. shortly after they "encouraged" (ie, threatened to close my account) me to use my full surname in 2010-ish, I started using the name of a minor TV character. I moderately used Facebook until about 2016, when someone reported my account (some seperate issue), and obv. I couldn't prove it was my name, and went back to my "orig" account, which I barely use.) addition - Facebook just gave me a curious survey. no feedback for answers, only tickboxes. the final question was "how does it make you feel?". (WHAT. THE. #UC#. ARE. YOU. ON. ABOUT?--not nearly as bad as a *ing company that runs a website, who make it impossible to contact the website when something goes wrong, and who only allow the feedback of 'tickbox a' 'tickbox b', makes me feel) side note: is captcha (the program that the programmers think is a sublime piece of expert engineering, and the rest of the world thinks is a vague pain in the *nt -- does a traffic light include the struts supporting it? is the shadow of a bus, still the bus? do stairs include the siderail? is that a palm tree, or is it just a tree? if a square has 5 pixels of a parking meter, should I click that square? if you fade an image out reeeally slowly before ingeniously replacing it with another one, will people get annoyed?), going to break the internet? *shadowban - the art of your posted content ONLY being visible to the account that posted it. facebook/twitter/reddit/youtube/sitejabber/huffington post (uses facebook login for comments)/any comments system which uses those logins, maybe others, do it. tip: log out of whatever website you're on, and check your content/comment/review is still visible tip for companies: I know the idea of a shadowban is that users will never know about it. but if they do. it really annoys them. word count: 1698 [thanks for taking the time to read this.....'comment']

I pretty much agree with you, assuming I’m understanding you correctly. I think there’s more to marketing than just getting one’s data and the other side protecting their data. In essence, marketing is supposed to be the creation of a relationship between the two parties. And, all *good* relationships are based on trust and respect. Facebook would not know “good” if it bit them in the butt. ;)

Mike - no probs! update (1700 words is enough for one post) 4/11 addition - FB gave me a "survey". not the kind of survey which asks the questions that are relevent, eg do you use facebook more or less than you used to? are you satisfied with the level of customer service Facebook provides are you happy with the features facebook offers instead, the sort of loaded questions which have no negative answer. eg, what do you use facebook for? contacting... businesses communities friends/family what does this imply? that next time Facebook provides BBC news, or CNN, or whatever outlet, with statistics, you can be fairly sure they are not reliable statistics, because they were generated with loaded questions which did not give you the option of your real answer. I've also noticed that when my Facebook 'news' feed is open, I sometimes get 300kb/sec incoming bandwidth in use, even when a different tab or different browser (or no windows showing) is open. when a different FB window is selected (eg "general account settings"), I have no bandwidth in use. Is this a ploy for FB to use up bandwidth or data? do they actually know it happens? "move fast and break things" - not the mantra of a company that is taking what it's doing seriously. connecting people....which used to be Nokia's slogan. connecting people.....isn't always a good thing. some people shouldn't be connected. the 'positive' part is assumed......ass/u/me'd...(!) boxers connected with each other. maybe the phrase does suit facebook. mind you, Nokia was "connecting people"-s phone conversations and texts. Facebook is "connecting people"-s data. with everyone else. also the part about seeing someones (you hardly know) nice journey rather than your aunts updates. there could be some part of "if we show you someone else's nice thing, you'll want to spend money to have your own nice thing to outdo their nice thing, which you'll then post about". I think the offishal term is a 'positive feedback loop' I've also heard facebook is arrogant, and insecure. 2 billion users makes them arrogant, knowing the 'X' button will close it all down is insecure. respecting users as you say (not taking them for granted) is a good idea! maybe it won't happen until FB goes down to 1.4 bill users or something the thing about who is the customer - the company that pays for advertising space or the user, there's a (sort of) interesting take on that... BBC license fee - Brits often say it's the license fee payers that are the people the BBC has to cater for. but it's not strictly true. in the case of the BBC license, it isn't the people who pay the fee who the BBC are liable to, it's the people who *guarantee* the income - ie, the government who enforce the income upon penalty of jail if people don't pay. so the Beeb will basically support the government. mind you no government will abolish the license fee, because then the BBC won't say nice things about them

I don't think Facebook is going anywhere until there is a real alternative. It seems most businesses have a Facebook page, and they are afraid to shut those down. Users, even many who don't feel good about FB, are addicted to it or feel they have to be on there. There are many big businesses that people might not truly like. There's no lack of bad feeling about Walmart and Amazon. But they continue to do extremely well and will continue as long as there are no comparable alternatives. And they are mostly likely to continue behaving badly because it continues to pay off. It's also worth remembering that Facebook backs politics, and that means it probably has corporate and political powers backing it in one way or other. It is propped up by far more than the average Joe customer.

@@MikeGastin I'm afraid the mega tech companies have made themselves seem indispensable. FB has been very good at taking out the competition. And they are just too immensely popular. I wouldn't mind seeing one of them get into so much legal trouble that it has to be shut down. Of course, if you are propped by the politicians who are in power, you are generally immune to much more than a slap on the wrist. This doesn't quite make sense from a quantitative standpoint. Primarily because there aren't data points to suggest a decline in their user signups per year because they did not fundamentally "respect their users". I agree that creating a better user experience can always be used an excuse to feed you content that is more aligned to your own thoughts and likings making the world far more homogenous than what it is, when you're on the platform (that being a very big problem and creates a more polar world). However, what is important to recognize is that facebook could probably not work for multiple other reasons - people just not caring or wanting to know enough about others. Active hours/ user could dip since people are already caught up with other unbundled ex-facebook competitions out there such as instagram & whatsapp. In that respect I find your logic a baseless, qualitative "opinion" without any backing. Would be nice to hear you talk with more data to corroborate what you're saying. Cheers!
@MikeGastin
@MikeGastin 5 жыл бұрын
Hari, fair enough. But help me understand. Are you saying that I'm outright wrong or that because I did not use quantitative data my assessment/opinion is illegitimate? I'm fine with you taking either or both stances. I think my assessment is accurate, data notwithstanding, and that time will prove me right. The number of users is not an indication of life/health. Activity, time, buying behaviors matter more than account numbers and I can't see those things as FB won't publish them as far I I know. Plus, FB as a company owns other platforms that are thriving, like Insta. So, they are not going anywhere for a while. But, I think they killed the power of the FB platform when they decided to ignore their users and took a more controlling role in the user's experience, meaning who's updates a user sees, etc. Even as an advertiser, which I am, FB has lost a lot of its sparkle. I can go on and on. The video wasn't meant to be a data-rich assertion, but rather a more pundit-style take on the company's health. I think that's clear, but would like to hear more from you. Do you expect all vids to provide data to back everything up or do you watch some for the creator's opinion or for entertainment?

Facebook is going to face some very serious competition from new entrants like Minds.com, which is really studying the weaknesses of it. I think Minds.com will be a decentralized social network.

I got a 30 day ban for saying certain people shouldn't be allowed to have kids and should be sterilized. I made a new alternate account and that account is now also banned. For no reason because they didn't even send me a notification stating why this other account was banned. The only explanation I can think of is that I answered a question by a woman asking other women about wearing bras again after the quarantine is over. The only reason I keep my account is because I have photos of my first dog. But I want to get those photos so I can leave that site. I feel like I'm on eggshells each time I express an opinion now.

At 303 he points out facebook's users are not the customer, but the product... well the same is true of his audience. The actual customer of youtube and youtubers is advertisers. Pot-Kettle.

Well, Austin, if you watch the video you’ll understand I’m not taking issue with the business model. It doesn’t bother me that we’re the product. My point is that Facebook doesn’t respect its users, you and me. That said, KZbin seems to do a better job of treating users better. They do, however, treat independent creators like crap. So, I’m not sure how I’m the pot calling the kettle black, unless one is just trying to find fault rather than try to understand the point I was making.

@@MikeGastin Well I understand you're accussing facebook of disrespecting it's users, and saying that this is fundamentally because of their business model. I don't understand how you or any advertising funded media (most of it) is any different.
@MikeGastin
@MikeGastin 5 жыл бұрын
I am NOT saying their disrespect is inherent in their business model. If it were, all magazines, radio stations, and television channels would be accused of the same thing, as they are built on the same model. Any business that makes its money selling advertising is in a similar business as Facebook (and KZbin). Facebook's problem is it has cast aside any ethical concern and respect for its users. I don't think Google/KZbin is that far behind. I also don't think it necessarily *has* to be that way. It's what they've *chosen* to do; something that thousands of businesses with similar models have never chosen to do. Lastly, I don't see how me creating and posting a video on KZbin, something from which I get absolutely NO income from-I have less than 1,000 subs so don't even qualify for ad revenue, which is fine be me-makes me guilty of ANYTHING.

@@MikeGastin "all magazines, radio stations, and television channels would be accused of the same thing" - they are. It happened last night in the democratic primary debate Bernie Sanders pointed out the interests of the advertisers (in the health industry) were affecting the questions. Honestly I don't see how the various complaints you have add up to a lack of concern for their users greater than any large company, not do O think the complaints you have represent what "users" want. Perhaps what a subset of digitally savy users. Anyhow man you lead with the "you are not the customer you are the product" line and you really seem to be putting some stank on it, implying moral outrage at the business model itself.
