I does think so, yeah. ;-) Admittedly, I spent months going back through a second time on hard-mode and recording a third time through building theories and going chapter-by-chapter through the events and story beats....... so I could be a little bit biased. It is easily the best FF game, and it's one of the best games regardless of genre, by any reasonable measure. No game is perfect, because it's a subjective measure, but for me, the misses are mostly nitpicked and far outweighed by engaging story and character arcs, immersive combat, and a masterful job of retelling the original in a way that leaves even decades-long veterans wondering and theory-crafting.

Yeah. GOTY. I also don't think there were too many mini games. No. I don't wanna go back into the game and redo the mini games on my second playthrough. But there aren't many games where you play over 100 hours and say. I. WANT. MORE. And if I could wipe my brain and play it for the 1st time again I would in a heartbeat and put another 100+ hours into it.

When I read a good book, or play a good game, I leave it a year to re-read or re-play so that I still have some excitement so that I retain some freshness. That's true for the OG, too, which I still love so much. I'm currently replaying Suikoden II, an absolute classic and my second favourite rpg after FF7, which will be re-released next March. A great way to fill in the time before FFVIIRemake no 3 comes out!

For me, it's in that FFX/FFXIV tier of, I am glad I've done everything there is in that game, but if I had to go and do all the grinding again I would be put off. Thankfully, FFVIIR2 lets you replay without having to do all the mini-games, so that's great for me if I want to refresh before the last chapter

Don't get me wrong, I loved Rebirth, and even platinumed it, but I can see how the amount of minigames and their difficulty level, which some players got stuck on for hours away from the primary gameplay, did burn out quite a few players. Also, a lot got sour grapes and were livid doing the post story VR mission, as they spent hours and hours, re-beating the same bosses, only to be sent back to the start. It pleases elite gamers to see so many others give up, but those people with sour grapes are higher in number and quite vocal. Personallly, even after beating them, I have no intention to re-do them either on a second playthrough.

On the penultimate chapter at the moment and I truly think it is game of the year. Initial thoughts on it were mixed but once the story clicked into place and I understood that and the combat system and gameplay loop fully, the game reignited my love for Final Fantasy in general. A fantastic JRPG that some have misunderstood for sure and it deserves the praise!!!!

I think Astro Bot will be the game that pushes rebirth, its got hype and if its gonna be a longer Astro's playroom it's gonna be an amazing game. Rebirth is probably my 2nd favourite game of all time though and only narrowly missing out to ff9 as my number 1 so it's definitely game of the year in my book.

i personally want it to be game of the year but i have doubts. i hear tons of people say recently "dude wukong is game of the year, the only other contestent i can think of is Elden Ring but its just DLC and not an actual new game." ..... that just shows you how irrelevant my favorite franchise is, they arent even on the map anymore and so many people still dont even have FF in their head with rent, im convinced it doesnt matter how gutsy Square gets their games, theyre basically the sex pistols rocknroll hall of fame of video games, except their games are better than sex pistol's tracks. like, newer gamers hardly even know what final fantasy is. and only old people or losers like me love final fantasy and kingdom hearts. the JRPG scene is dying, turn based or not--- and that sucks. Game of the year is almost always rigged, and it never surprises me, but just leaves me with disappointment wondering how authentic the game industry really is anymore. You have people who are willing to buy the next ff or kh game, and people will complain they dont change the games enough and get hip with the times, or people will complain that they changed too much and arent their own old identity in terms of the general way the game is in nature(im not talking politically), both design approaches dont make a difference in sales. it doesnt matter how wacky nomura gets with nojima, it doesnt matter how modernized the gameplay is or how epic it is, it doesnt matter how generic it gets if its like FFXV just playing everything safe for a western audience for RPGs. it doesnt matter if the story is braindead simple like 15 from surface pov, it doesnt matter how complex it is, it wont matter. Id like Square to be appreciated and publically noticed more and get enough sales to not be in debt, but i doubt it will happen. You know they are risking it all tooth and nail and all guts cut out if the director said part 3 is going to be one of the greatest games of all time in news articles, and we know square is bleeding money and the new CEO comes out sayin FF and KH basically suck and implies theyre a liability to the company. People waited for this trilogy(game) for 30 years about, and its the pinnacle of square's work, and its results arent shattering the barrier in the game industry. its not no fortnite, it isnt elden ring, its not the new baldurs gate or wukong, its not the new zelda. I have a niece who my older brother's daughter likes FF kind of but doesnt play it cuz she watches her dad play it(hes like the original audience of FF7), and her age group of kids, have absolutely no idea what FF/KH is but they know zelda, pokemon, elden ring, and fortnite at the age of 13.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was a masterpiece, I absolutely loved the game and spent over 120 hours on my first play through. I intend to start my hard mode play through soon.

It deserves GOTY for sure in my opinion, its seriously one of the best games ive ever played.... but unfortunately, Black Myth is *probably* gonna bag GOTY. There's been an insane hype for that game, it broke records for concurrent players on Steam, and is alot more recent. Rebirth being released near the beginning of the year, only being released on ps5, and also being the second game of a trilogy all hurt it's chances of winning GOTY in my viewpoint. But goddammit does Rebirth deserve GOTY.

It's hard to see Black Myth Wukong losing GOTY at this point. Both are great games overall, with some flaws, and there were some frustrating things about both games that I felt prevented each from being an all-time masterpiece. Black Myth Wukong still has broken numerous records and has currently sold roughly 6x as much as Rebirth. So Black Myth Wukong got its sales while Rebirth sold less than expected and had problems of its own. Incoherent plot devices, poor pacing, forced mini games, botched Aerith scenes, and a questionable ending that left us with more questions than answers are all things that dropped Rebirth down a notch from its full potential

Let be honest BMW isn’t winning game of the year it’s metacritic says otherwise.. it’s a reshaped DS game with inconsistent story.. if you aren’t familiar with journey to the west. Also the combat system isn’t something new but rather a simpler version of games like demons soul.. Most of the boss rush is also inconsistent with the given pacing of the game.. yeah it isn’t winning

@@Hmonks You have a good point and it's very possible that Wukong does not win for various reasons. The thing is, Rebirth really did not sell well at all, even less than 16. I didn't mean to say that sales were the sole driver and that the most sales should automatically win. At the same time, I believe the sales should at least be respectable and not a commercial failure. It's hard to imagine Rebirth, a game that sold less than half of Remake, being GOTY. A game should at least be a commercial success or break even to be GOTY but Rebirth is the worst-selling mainline FF game since FF2 in 1988

Lots of my mates unfortunately won't give it a try. They were put off by things like 'top secrets' and the minigames in Remake, and as soon as they saw both the zero checkpoint VR missions and minigames were tripled down on, they wouldn't even give it a chance. Overall I like rebirth, despite the post story content and minigames being a chore. I did plat the game, but on replay I'd avoid as many minigames as possible, and I never want to replay the post story VR missions. They were a huge chore, and repeating stuff over and over, for a single chance to practice where one needs it, is a frustrating format. If I had to do it over, I'd had avoided the post story content, but, at nearly 200 hours in and most minigames done, I fell for the sunk cost and completed it all, but didn't enjoy the time very much. Toning down the difficulty on the minigames and added checkpoints into the post story gauntlets would give me an overall more positive memory of them game, and I'd be willing to replay that content. Still a great game, but despite those flaws.

My only real gripe is that the protorelic quests don't reset in chapter select so the only way to face Gilgamesh again is through the combat arena, which is a shame since his arena and cutscenes were a lot of fun, and getting 100% from scratch in this game is super time consuming.

Yes! I think the only competition is Metaphor: ReFantazio. I don’t think Wukong will be GOTY because of its lower critic score and because of the controversy surrounding the Chinese developer’s mandates and history. Just because it’s a hit on Steam and sales does not make it GOTY. TOTK was a crazy phenomenon last year and sold a boat load, but it did not win GOTY. Ultimately the GOTY is awarded by a committee with critics’ vote counting for 90%. Rebirth is a genius game which deserves GOTY.

I Loved FF7 rebirth and it should be GOTY but I can see a case also being made for Black Myth: Wukong but i don't think they will give Wukong game GOTY due to all the "controversy's" around it. The VGA will probably want to stay clear of any unnecessary backlash and will give it to FF7 Rebirth by default.

YES! It Deserves by far the Game of the Year Award. Is a work of passion and love for the OG FF7 game and a love letter to all fans. Wukong is amazing but i'm so tired of the action games inspired by FromSoftware (i know Wukong is not a Souls-like btw) This time FF7 Rebirth deserves by far GOTY. It's unique gameplay upgraded from Remake's battle system is a joy to play. Story and performances by the Voice Actors are magnificent. FF7 Rebirth has a soul and heart in it's core that Wukong and those 2M players can't reach. So that's why it's GOTY and why i think it should win.

Сюжет Rebirth слегка изменённый сюжет оригинала, авторы игры отказались от перемен которые давали свободу выбора, как в Chrono Trigger. Без кардинальных перемен в сюжете, без разных концовок для меня FFREMAKE остаётся лучшей игрой FF7. Не жду 3й части, потерял надежду на интересный сюжет. I still think Infinite Wealth is the top JRpg of the year, but that will probably change when metaphor comes out. It obviously has no chance at the award though As for the actual winner, I'd say 40% chance Astrobot, 35% chance Rebirth, 25% other with metaphor being the most likely in the other category Unicorn Overlord is another gave that deserves GOTY nomination but will never get it

I don't know how it can't be, I'm near completion on Wu Kong, if that's the competition then it's a home run. Wu Kong doesn't feel like it's properly warmed through out of the oven, Rebirth feels like a well cooked meal with dessert and after dinner drinks.

Yes, I can't see any game beating it Astrobot is the last hurdle and it's gonna be an amazing game, but it's a platformer with no where near the content Rebirth has I'll be shocked if Rebirth doesn't win at this point

In my opinion black myth wukong and Elden ring dlc were more fun and win goty That being said I mainly played this for nostalgia and I wasnt a fan of all the mini games and the open world exploration compared to other games The combat was great

First 10 minutes of BMW destroyed the immersion that the trailers had built up. Immediately lost interest from that point on. I'll wait for it to be released physically so I can at least have the choice to sell it on if I don't enjoy the game.

i don't think so. FF is literally my favorite franchise ever and this was PAINFUL to force myself to finish. it literally took me from launch until about 2 weeks ago or so to finally finish it (about this full 6 months). Just way too much nonsense and a lot is good but a lot is boring and bloated. I can't wait till the "game" is done so I can play it all as one piece but in the end of the day this remake approach is clearly WAY too big. I hope their approach to 9 and 10 remakes are way more restrained. I'll definitely be playing this on PC when it comes out, but still...it was a lot. and waiting another 4 years for the next part sounds awful. I wish we'd just gotten a regular remake and then some new FF games honestly. I think black myth wukong is way more likely to win, it's fun as hell and released on PC as well so way more people played it.
