Is FONTAINE Music as Good as Previous GENSHIN IMPACT Music?

While looking for some more Genshin Impact music to listen to, I found out there is a new update out for Genshin Impact! So today we're listening to some music from the newly released Fontaine update, the Fontaine Main Theme. I wonder how it compares to the very high standard set by previous Genshin Impact music...

What you thought was a “flute” at the beginning was actually a glass harp for the first song and a glass harmonica for the second song. These instruments are both instruments that require wet fingers to be rubbed against glasses filled with varying water levels to resonate and create sound. It’s cool, because these are examples of instruments that require water to be played, very appropriate for the nation of Hydro.

The main theme is like a collection of motifs on which the first impression of the nation is developed on. It represents the nation as a whole. different motifs from the main theme can be generally find all throughout the region in atmospheric, battle and story music. And it has a surface level look to it... It usually shows the immediately visible part of the nation, not the hidden sides

Yes, you have noticed that Genshin music has a very strong emphasis on the main melodies and motifs; To me Fontaine raised the bar in terms of harmony, the battle themes go wild with key/mode changes, crazy time signatures, and sometimes they even use castanets and flamenco guitar it seems I can't wait for the weekly boss themes, because they usually incorporate rock and EDM in these boss themes, so I'm expecting some Waltzy/Flamenco rock with EDM elements, which I can't imagine, but I'm sure will be lit

Interesting that you mention symmetry. Fontaine in the game is the nation of hydro and justice. It makes me think of scale, fairness, duality, black and white, verdict between innocent and guilty. Also water always levels due to gravity, so water is fair regardless of the container. Damn my mind just blown.

really love the music analysis! Genshin really does use a main leitmotif as a basis for each region's track. Hope you can cover Sumeru and Inazuma main theme and see if you can spot the main leitmotif for those region. There's another main leitmotif that pretty much exist in a lot of genshin's tracks that is called "Photon of Fluctuation" tho you might hear it in the battle themes if you decide to cover in the future.

I think it's interesting that for the melody you said which 'keeps coming back', the very last time it was restated at 16:44 did not feature a key change to the dominant like every other iteration, instead staying in the same key. This made it sound much more triumphant and a lovely finale in my opinion. This is now my favorite regional 'main theme' from Genshin so far.

All the themes you've heard of genshin previously is entirely composed by *"yu peng Chen"* . This name is popular wide in the community. But since Fontaine, he isn't the one composing, another group of composers also doing it. For this one specifically, it's "dimeng yuan" who composed the majority of desert battle themes.

I feel as if I have to repeat myself a lot, but Yu-Peng Chen hasn’t been the only composer working on in-game music since 2.4, with Enkanomiya. Dimeng Yuan, Yijun Jiang, Qian Ding, and Xin Zhao all joined in to work on the in-game music, as well. In 3.2, Peijia You and Arcangelo Chen were welcomed. In 3.4, June joined. In 3.6, Ziyu Che and Yuxi Wang joined. And now in 4.0, Lunan joined. A total of eleven composers at this time. Now, it appears that around 3.6-3.8, Yu-Peng Chen took a step back from composing altogether as not a single track in the 3.6 desert area and 3.8 limited-time area was composed by him, and that could’ve been a reason for why Fontaine’s main theme wasn’t composed by him. Edit: Well, he left HOYO-MiX after all…

As to genshin music, you can have a watch of the online concert 'Reflection of Spring'. It contains seven pieces of music in the Liyue area of genshin impact. Each of them is fantastic. Especially the song 'Rage Beneath the Mountains'.

If you want more Fontaine to react too, albeit a short one, there's Furina's theme. But some other solid ones are the battle themes. As a different region, I would love to see your reaction to God Devouring Mania, also from Genshin Impact.

You're listening to live concert which someone combined with character trailer video for some reason. These two things don't really even belong to each other, each of them has their own video and audio published on official Genshin Impact channel. When using Genshin music, I recommend you using videos that are posted on Genshin Impact official channel or are published on Hoyo-Mix channel. You can't go wrong with these while using unofficial sources may get you into problems if you by chance use leaked content that's not been officially released yet.

You really HAVE TO listen to Scaramouche boss battle theme! Knowing the Signora theme (Fatui theme) and Raiden/Inazuma theme, you can see the mix of all three in his boss theme (since he was aligned with the Fatui and originates from Inazuma, very closely related to Raiden) and it's AN EXPERIENCE. Such an incredible piece of music! Also, the themes from Sumeru are incredible. Port Ormos and Sumeru City as much as many of the desert tracks are just a bliss.

Davi, if you're going to do "Rondeau des fleurs et des rapieres", listen to the short 2 minutes of "Narzissenkruez Ordo book OST" first. The story of this song begins with "Narzissenkruez Ordo book OST", it involves 4 orphan children that loved each other, but as they grew up, fate pitted them into tragic roles that ended up killing each other, "Rondeau des fleurs et des rapieres" is the song that represents their final struggle and battle to the death... and no, this isn't a spoiler, it's readable text bits found within the game.

You're right on the point that the region named music is not used in the game. Starting Till inazuma, these themes used to be the main city themes. After sumeru, these themes became leimotifs that the composers would sneak in here and there in the entire region. As for Fontaine, again the theme is played at the entrance of the Fontaine city since thats the only land that people live in the entire region

You're right about the region being based of Europe mainly France. Also this main theme plays in-game but just in the main city (Court of Fontaine), it is I believe one of 3 track for the main city :)

there's actually 9 themes for the court of fontaine, not 3. maybe more than 9, but I'm not sure. four day themes, five night themes. this is a pretty normal amount when it comes to city music in genshin.

i find it amusing you found this theme to be "nostalgic" because the Fontaine region is closely related to Mondstadt - the first region in the game. They're both based on european countries and culture, Mondstadt being more germanic and Fontaine having 18th century France/England influences

Genshin currently have 5 regions and each of them are different and based on real life countries and places. Monsdtadt - Germany (please someone correct me if im wrong) Liyue - China Inazuma - Japan Sumeru - south asia and middle east countries Fontaine - france

Fontaine was Roman during Egaria time, and now Furina its British and French (Mainly French) also a few Italian culture here and there.

While that is correct, mondstadt also has Italian and other European traces, same goes for Fontaine, which has Italian and British traces. The only nations so far that you could say is for the most part strictly a single thing is Liyue, i don't count Inazuma because enkanomiya exists and its based on Greece.

As good as this track is, I will always have a special place for "Sinner's Finale" which reprises parts of this. The cutscene it plays during is easily my most favorite cutscene and to be honest I don't know if it can be topped let alone will be. And it helps that the track itself is solid on its own.

There's so much wonderful music from Genshin, but my favorite is a trio of pieces from the Chasm called Decayed in the Darkness, A Shard from Past Glories, and Seething Animosity. These are all essentially the same song, but with 3 different levels of intensity from quiet and brooding to full throttle that seamlessly blend from one into another depending on what's happening in the game. For example, if the player gets into combat, then the music will blend into Seething Animosity, and then blend back out once combat is over. This is a super cool technique from a game composition standpoint, and I can't think of another game that does this off the top of my head.

It’s funny, because a lot of Fontaine’s lore has to do with a group of children, and their gradual loss of innocence as they confront the horrors of the world, and the rift that grows between them that ultimately leads to them killing each other. So when you say “nostalgic,” you really hit the nail on the head - as they reflect back to when they were still children, when they were all good friends, pretending to be characters in fairy tales.
