Last I checked Eastern Europeans still outnumbered people from the Middle East in Germany. France as far as I know has always had a very large North African population. Might i remind you it was originally predicted that America would no longer have a white majority by 2030. Now they're saying that it might still have a white majority beyond 2050. The main reason is that after about 2 generations immigrant birth rates are no longer higher than the local population.

Calvin Howard no you only need some time to atune your compréhension to a strong accent. I remembered when I was little someone with a strong southern accent (Marseille) spoke to me and I understood nothing. Like nothing at all. Same for Canadian The difficulty is that they use slang for words in combination with strong accent So a car in french is like voiture but in Quebec it’s like “char” (for a french it would be a tank or an old school carriage with horses) So we do not pretend it’s just hard to when you don’t have at all the same references and a lot of cultural contact. I guess Canadian are a lot more closer to USA than France. So it evolves differently than France who now have a lot of African slang in its language (mostly Arabic and from old colonies).

There is too much conflict, etc. Founding schools with the aim to make them all learn French may sound selfish, but at least they get to visit a school. Some don't have that luxury. And a country must act in self-interest. If you are a private person, you may do some good and provide a family with financial help so they can have it easier. But as a country, you priority is your own people, everything else is a matter of how much you benefit from it. Might just happen, most people I talk to about this is positive and think a Northern European Union could be preferable to a European Union in many ways. But, because of the Soviet Union a lot of people today have forgotten and are not aware of how close these cultures have been in the past. Estonia writes with the Latin alphabet, it has a protestant past/tradition, has a Finnic language, it's always been a part of Northern Europe more than Eastern Europe. Same goes with Karelia and Ingria, but that one is more complicated obviously. In Northern Europe we should stand together as brothers and sisters, the Balto-Finnic people and the Scandinavian people together combines and make up the Nordic, due to a long shared history, along with the Sami people and the Islanders descended from Scandinavians(the Faroes, Iceland, and in some people's opinion Shetland and Orkney too). Exactly what is the Nordic and what is not, is heavily debated, but in my opinion it does not make sense to think of Finland as Nordic without also thinking of Estonia as Nordic.

You are missing the point of the video. France is literally the only European country with a chance of great power status. For example the the British are leaving the EU. That mean no other major country in the EU is a English speaking. This will allow France to promote French as the dominant language of Europe. Furthermore Africa has a large French speaking population. The population of Africa is projected to be 1.52 Billion in 2025 ( 5.5 years from now) About half of those people speak French and a first or second language. This puts the French language after English and Mandarin Chinese in numbers of speakers. Far ahead of Spanish.

As an English teacher, I found this very interesting, and plausible. However, I've had a few French students who eventually conceded that they get nowhere in the world with French. I like to soften that blow by telling them that yes, at the moment, English is the 'Lingua Francia', so they can feel some pride. I am swiss from Geneva, I speak French, official language of the vaud state , you won't get a job here with only english but french, average salary 5400 chf like 5400 euros. Exactly because no one country can truly claim to be the leader of the anglo-sphere, it seems better as an international language. French has the issue of it being so closely tied to France, meaning any and all choices to speak french has some political side to it. If I were to speak french, you'd assume that I'm either a native speaker, or that I have a large interest in France itself. Same with mandarin. French will more likely become something like spanish, i.e. spoken on a continental scale, but I can't see it overtaking english anytime soon.

It seems more likely that the french pocket will become larger. English is already used in airports, it is already widely used. Changing that will be difficult due to the present infrastructure. Something to also keep in mind is that there is a reason spanish hasn't become the lingua franca. It didn't matter that there are more native speakers, and that the language is far easier to learn. If African countries became more industrial based maybe,but there is no capital for such investment in such risky , corrupt back waters. The educational, industrial, infrastructure or cultural will (domestically or in Africa states) isn't there as a foundations to build upon greater French hegemony. To impose pressure to make these things really happen would harvest fresh (yet valid) accusations of neoimperialism and the return to colonialism. I am French and it is interesting to watch this video in the sens that indeed French language remains an important soft power tool: it is growing in volume due to African demography, the French High School network in the world is unique, and French keeps a kind of attractiveness cause it is chic to be able to speak the language. Now, based on that, it is a bit optimist to suggest that France is the next super power :). English is indeed really dominant right now, while Chinese (Mandarin) shall also develop like crazy, cause beside the sole super power on this planet (the USA), most influent countries are really big (China, Russia, India), while other countries are medium/regional powers (UK, France, Japan. Germany). True that the "Francophonie" is really a huge asset that France has to keep developing, but France influence in former African colonies is a real challenge. I mean, to my opinion, France should have this model evolving from a "Françafrique" system (France keeps controling these countries indirectly) to a more mature and healthy relationship, where France deals with these countries on a equal basis, making regular trade and intellectual exchanges, for mutual benefit. For the rest, France remains and will remain a medium/regional power, ie a relatively small country with relatively high power compared to its size (permanent Security Council member, nuclear power, global corporates like Renault, BNP Paribas, Total, Sanofi, Vinci, Bouygues, a military industrial country producing it's own boats, fighters jets, satellites, a very aggressive army and intelligence service, an historical ambition to remain independant). And franckly speaking, beyong that, France future can only be built together with other EU countries to be able to face giants and super powerful countries like USA and China.

Apparently a lot of people dismiss this outright, and while not likely, it's not impossible either. The clue is in the last sentences, if somehow Paris manages to hold on to the CFA Franc control over these countries, they will directly influence much of the national spending and lendings of countries that amount to about a billion people, in 40 or so years. That's a big deal and likely more important than people realize. Of course it would require governments in those countries loyal to France and with a growing population that may become more wealthy, this becomes more and more unlikely to keep together. That's where the language thing comes in, as a means to avoid military pressure to hold on to that position, if possible. Will that work? I dunno. So one big MAYBE. Also not unimportant but not mentioned in the video, is that by that time mid to late 21st century, France itself will have grown it's population to be larger than Germany and thus the balance in the EU may shift back also. Another big MAYBE but not outside of the realm of possibilities. Another one is that France needs to keep going with this tactic for the next decades for those two MAYBE's to work out. The fact that they Always teether on the brink of voting for far right groups, and get riots, makes me think within the next 40 years there may be a government in there that will give up on Africa, and ruining these plans. So that's a third MAYBE. If you combine those things, aside from three big MAYBEs, if the cards are right for all of them, you end up in a situation where France is the biggest influence behind both much of Africa and Europe. It doesn't take a genius to see that's a very valuable position to be in. Any dealings on a global scale with Europe or Africa would basically never go against France's interests, in that scenario. I can absolutely see how that position can be exploited to become a super power. However it does mean that everything in the next 40-50 years, pretty much needs to fall in place perfectly for France, and that's just not how the world works usually, which is why I would consider it unlikely, but absolutely not impossible.

I feel that this is an indicator of how much our world has changed. A century or two ago, a European power wanting more influence in Africa would just invade. But now they’re doing things like building language schools. People may not change, but the rules by which they operate change.
