Pretty cool to see that Christian ended up being the one to blunder check Fabi during their match while Fabi was basically the one in the driver seat. Danny also ended up being the clutch factor for Anish but their team didn't work too well together. Basically the opposite of what was talked about on this podcast.

Regarding performing better getting you a harder pairing: That can happen in football too in knockout competitions like the champions league or in the world cup. Basically (as i'm sure you guys know) in the world cup there are generally 8 groups and 4 teams per group (though i think this has either changed now or will change). After each team has played each other once the 2 teams with the most points (3 for win, 1 for draw, 0 for loss -> which i think would be great for all chess 'league' formats as it were, where point total decides the tournament victor, titled Tuesday would be interesting to see with a 3 1 0 format) If you finish in first in your group, you will play someone in second in a different group... however due to the way the groups are formed (and the nature of football itself being a low scoring game so theres more likely to be variance in expected and actual outcomes) you could end up with a 'worse' team finishing top of the group. In the champions league we get around that by having draws at every round so you don't know exactly which team you're playing, but in the world cup its all planned out so you know specifically which 2 teams you could play if you're through. So for example: if USA could either finish first or second in their group at the next world cup, they could be due to play either Spain or Iran, lets say - Iran in this case had a good run and knocked out a stronger team to get 2nd place. Its probably in the USA's interest to top the group anyway, as typically the best teams win, but not always. If Iran did manage to top their group, and spain came second for example... you'd probably rather play Iran still on balance, despite them topping their group and so it would PROBABLY be in the USA's interest to finish second. Obviously it's more complicated than I'm making it, but what Fabi was saying reminded me of how the world cup works - it is weird and I can't help but feeling that the players would have similar thoughts that Fabi explained was going through his head.

funny thing about the rook blunders. I remember seing Fabi blunder a rook in a blitz game before, when I was kiebitzing on his board in person. It was the big blitz tournament at the side of the Bundesliga event in Berlin, I was playing myself for fun and then watching the top boards after my games were finished. It might have been against Bartosz Socko, that Fabi was playing, not totally sure. Also there, he just put the rook on an attacked square

Just let the guy that finishes first select not from the bottom half (5th-8th) but from all non-selected (2nd-8th) and skip everyone already picked until you have all the pairings. For instance, if third place prefers to play against 4th more than against the two remaining (5th and 6th for instance) you let him play the 4th place, and 5th ends up playing with 6th.

The Fischerrandom tournament was really good, and I agree that it was a success overall, but I also agree that the rapid consequence was so low that we viewers were confused about what was happening, and also, the A/V production was a bit scuffed. I'm sure next year it will be ironed out better!

Shuffle chess was first proposed by a Dutch Chess Enthusiast in 1792. The first recorded games are from 1842. The first tournament was played in 1851. When Fischer was staying with the Polgars in 1993 he mentioned the idea to Lazlo thinking he had invented it. Lazlo showed him a 1910 book that proposed the exact same. Fischer changed the rules of how you shuffle the pieces so that he could say that he invented it (king placement between the rooks, never same colored bishops) Of course I understand all USA citizens want to call it Fischerrandom. The rest of us should know that Fischer does not have intellectual property of shuffling the pieces before playing.

The way to make this format work is to invite 12 players. 22 round robin blitz games each (b+w against for all 11 opponents) to determine single elimination seeds. Top seed gets two byes to the classical formatted semifinals, but is nominally the 1 seed in the classical quarterfinals. Seeds 2-4 receive a bye to the quarterfinals as seeds 2-4. 5 and 6 face the winners of 9/12 and 10/11 rapid play-ins, with the 5 drawing the worst remaining player. Winner of 5/p-i and 6/p-i rapid matches get a seat in the quarterfinals. 7/8 directly pair off in Rapid for the 7th and final seat in the quarterfinals, with 7 getting to choose if they start the match as white or black. Seats 5-7 are re-seeded according to how they performed during round robin (so if 12 beat 9 and 5, they enter the quarterfinals as the worst seed: 7.) With this system, you accomplish a few things: - More round robin games means the best players are more likely to win the group, which will reduce the odds of randomly running into Magnus as a mid-seed. - Each seed is more valuable than the one above it: -- 1 is a well-earned gift -- 2-4 get byes and the re-seeded remainders in the quarterfinals -- 5 and 6 get the play-in winners, with 5 getting the easier pairing -- 7 and 8 face one another, but avoid an additional play-in by being above 9th. 7 gets black/white order preference in h2h with 8. -- 9 gets easiest pairing in play-ins - It's a tremendous amount of content for viewers - Leans into "freestyle" by using blitz time controls in the round robin, rapid up until the quarterfinals, and classical for the remainder. I would also stagger the blitz game start times by a few minutes, so the viewers get a never-ending stream of opening/middlegame/endgame simultaneously. This would also let the players on later boards see how other players started their games, giving the player kicking off board 6 each day the most information. This asymmetry seems interesting and for that reason, I'd introduce some parity in the round robin by forcing the current leader to be board one each day. Best remaining player (if not playing leader) on board two. And so on. The winner of round robins will have earned that bye to the semis.

I think Fischer Random or Chess960 sound more technical and intimidating, like you need to be really experienced to play them. Freestyle just sounds like an easy variant and more inviting. Though I do feel like I sound stupid or inaccurate saying Freestyle. 😆 I prefer Freestyle over normal chess as it becomes more about understanding the game instead of pure memorization to get an advantage. I mean to watch GMs spend 30 minutes on the first 4-5 moves alone is astounding. We also see pawn structures that you don't normally see since it could be good to play f3/f6 if you have a bishop on g1/g8.

Chess960 or 9LX or especially freestyle don't give much/any information, while Fischer Random both honors the GOAT and at least tells you something is random about the setup. Yeah, Fischer is the GOAT. GOAT means greatest ever, not for the longest duration, and Bobby beat 20 of his competitors in a row in an interzonal and 2 candidates matches (plus game 1 against Petrosian_. Howzit from South Africa! Hope Freestyle chess is coming to RSA! So many spectacular settings and venues for the event and opportunities for public exhibitions, including with sport celebrities (RSA outdoor and sport crazy country). Also hope organisers continue with some of the innovations and especially don't listen to just the super chess geeks / purist, but some great ideas on social media to improve coverage, commentary and just get more eyeballs and engagement from general public. IMHO less analysis board playing / solving by commentators. Continue to use arrows and explain basic strategic and tactical choices - leave some tension / drama in it playing out - instead of playing everything out on board. Get guest commentators, silence and moving on the other games is okay. Use 3rd commentator at analysis board not only for deep dives, but recalling previous games, classic games, explaining tactics / strategy, player profiles & statistics, chess move database insight (even not related to specific players) and just overall look at how other sports balance entertainment, drama, narrative with discription, explaining and technical analysis - it is actually also not very deep or too analytical - since that is not the level of engagement 95% of people want...or actual engage at...(many on say chess reddit claim they do...but reality...)

The one thing that really pissed me off about the event was that they didn't show the OTB board. They had a big giant on screen board and big giant commentator pictures. and all they showed was a little screen of the players faces off to the side with weird hard to see angles of pieces of the board. Drove my OCD insane! I was furious and wanted to break my computer monitor. You are not going to get the game popular like that. I'd rather watch one of these low budget streamers playing OTB in the parks or clubs. My dream as a fan would be the commentators having ability to draw arrows right on the players board, and maybe even move the pieces in some graphical cgi way lol. Regardless, keep your analysis board out of the view of them making their own moves! period.

6:10 magnus dominating in engine era where its harder to dominate highest classical rating of all time , 2882 , live 2889 highest ever rapid rating of all time, 2926 highest ever blitz rating of all time 2986 125 unbeaten classical game streak 10+ years world champion first triple crown, did 3 times. Fischer random event win Do not discredit world rapid and blitz since it wasn't a thing during Kasparov's time, its not Magnus' fault, its harder to win it than classical, so many good players. For example Hikaru is a blitz god and he has -0 titles. won every major event INCLUDING world cup won the Wijk an Zee which is the most prestigious event in classical 8 times, Kasparov won it 3 times and Anand won it 5 times ( its being held since 1900s ) equally dominating all formats including OTB and online Most consecutive NUMBER 1 in classical chess, passed Kasparov :) only world champ who is undefeated in title matches and so on... these are some of the things where Carlsen passes Kasparov, there are not only rapid blitz but also classical achievements. Today's era is so much challenging , more than old time, even as for now Magnus played more game than Kasparov. only thing Kasparov has over Carlsen is TOTAL longevity ( which Carlsen can pass ) and total world classical titles which is 1 more, but 2 split ones so its controversial. With all these if you still say magnus aint 1st in goat conversation, its because you are hating. Even if magnus last 100 years #1. all the big players such as Hikaru and Kramnik and other juniors says that Magnus is the goat. and one more thing, if you care so much about longevity then you should never mention Fischer in top 3 and you should say that Lasker is the GOAT.

It is not the future. The reason: Standard chess is already difficult enough for the average/above average player. Patterns and openings hep guide them. When it comes to 'freestyle'...this is just another situation where chessplayers have one trade - moving around wooden pieces and the elite will go wherever someone is willing to throw their money. But...that's not the case for 99% of chess players. So, no.

I am writing a World Championship proposal that I would like to hear you talk about in your videos. Hopefully it can gain traction from there and become a potential future for the World Championship. You may potentially come up with changes or different ideas, and that is encouraged. There are two main goals that I tried to get with this system. 1. A fair system to determine the World Champion Title 2. A system that will encourage fans to tune in throughout the season The System There will be a regular season consisting of 64 players that will play in 8 events. The top 10 scores at the end of the regular season will play in the World Championship tournament. Regular Season: This basically turns into a round robin. With 8 events, and 8 matches per event. Everyone would have played all the same opponents and one bye. I have created the schedule that would be used (unable to attach spreadsheet). Every tournament you would play games against player of varying strength. For example, the top players first game would be against one of the lower rated players. Each round they would play someone of a higher strength. By the last round they would be playing someone within the top 10. By the end of the tournament, the average rating of your opponent should be the same as everyone else. There will be winners of individual events, and prize money can be tied to that. Scores will be carried over to the next event. Players will have an event score, but they will also have a season score. The season score is what will be determined for the World Championship tournament. This will make every game matter. For example, if a top player is having a bad tournament, they may decide to draw the rest of their games, since they have no way of winning. This will be discouraged, as it is a season long score that is also important. World Championship Tournament: The top ten players from the regular season qualify for this tournament, with the winner being declared World Champion. Scores carry over from the regular season, and seeding is changed accordingly. This rewards someone for having a good year. However, to ensure that someone doesn’t try to cruise to the finish (drawing a bunch of games to ensure lead), wins in the tournament will count as 2 points (fans like decisive results and this should encourage more risk taking). The schedule will be a single round robin. The top two seeded players will play in the final round. The Games: The games should be Classical time control and be fun to watch. As a fan, action is great, time pressure is great, and watching multiple games is great. With that in mind, the time control would be 60 minutes for the first 30 moves, 30 minutes for the rest of the game, no increment. This is much faster than current time controls, but would be entertaining for fans, while still giving time for the players. Games would last 2-3 hours, which is in line with how long other major sports take for their games. They also have a set ending time, as no game would go on forever. This ties into the schedule of games. I have yet to figure out the decision on which players will get white or black. Event Schedule: There will be 8 regular season events and 1 World Championship Tournament. The events will be about once a month (March-October, November WC Tournament). Regular season events will be Wednesday-Sunday games. With 2 games played Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. One game will be played on Saturday and Sunday. Compressing the schedule allows players to save time and money, while giving fans more games. The final games are set to be the more popular players playing the more popular players, which is why the get their own day. Prize Money: The Grand Chess Tour was able to get $325,000 per classical event. If this were to take over as the World Championship, there could be an expectation of getting at least this much per event. All players should be awarded some money per tournament. Approximately $2,000 per player per tournament can be paid out. This money should be able to cover the cost for the player to show up and play. The rest of the money (~$200,000) would be for the top finishers of the event. The World Championship Tournament, may be able to get up to $1,500,000. Current world championship gets $1,000,000 and Candidates gets $500,000. World Champion could secure $1,000,000 with the remaining players splitting the $500,000. Tiebreaks: For qualifying to the World Championship Tournament: If scores are tied: 1. Head-to-Head record 2. Most wins 3. Most tournament wins 4. Highest average opponent rating of wins 5. Not sure if it is likely for more tiebreakers In the event that the World Championship ends in a tie. There will be tiebreaker matches. If top two are tied, 4 game sets are played, until a winner is determined. This may need to be at a separate date. If top three are tied. Double round robin, until a winner is determined. If top two are tied and third is behind, they drop out and we go to above tie breaker of 4 game sets. Qualifying: Ten spots will be given to all the players in the World Championship Tournament (includes World Champion) 32 spots will be given to the highest rated players (average rating over last 12 month). This will be calculated after the end of the regular season. There is likely to be overlap. In that case, the rated spot takes precedent. The final 32 spots will be rewarded at 4 tournaments during the “offseason” with the top 8 from each tournament earning a spot in the regular season. In the event that one of the top ten from the previous season is not ranked in the top 32, then only 7 will be taken from the final offseason tournament.

Guys, I think you need to spend time in post-editing to display all the positions you're analyzing. It is completely meaningless to viewers when we can't see what you're talking about. Best World Championship Idea: Top 64 players play 8 events with 8 games each. All players play each other once. Top 10 players at the end of all the games go into the finals and play a round robin. Whoever has the top score at the end is the World Champion. This happens every year and would have a normal season like every other sport. Players would have 90 minutes each no increment.
@adomaskuzinas2137
@adomaskuzinas2137 11 ай бұрын
noob detected 1) 8 players playing each other once means 7 games. 2) How are you gonna pick top 10 players out of 8 different tournaments? What if Fabi ends up in the same group as Magnus and comes 2nd, with worse tiebreak than some other runners-up in weaker groups? Suddenly the 2nd best player is out of the race (which would only make sense in a knock out setting, resulting in tense all-out games, also guaranteeing excellent broadcast material. However, in a season format the 2nd best player should have chances to strike for as long as possible) 3) 90min with no increment is a terrible time control for classical chess, as it would result in many games decided by flag and pieces flying in time pressure. Some "grindy" middlegames or endgames can go on for 100 or more moves, how do you wanna squeeze that into 90 mins? Traditionally candidates games are the highest quality games in most optimal conditions you ever see during the circuit. Logically, high quality chess demands time - increment guarantees more genius ideas found OTB and stunning endgame play, instead of pieces flying left and right&causing many disputes. 4) Round robin play is different from match play, as proven by Nepo cruising through candidates twice and performing way worse in a match setting. So the round robin wouldnt necessarrily result in the strongest overall player winning, instead it would rather be the most stable, versatile and luckiest one that comes out on top. Match play is interesting for its twists and turns, adapting the playstyle and openings mid-match. The player that plans their match strategy and changes it to the better depending on the flow usually wins.

1. 64 players play a round Robin spread over 8 events. Each player will get 1 bye during the season. 63 total games will be played 2. The top ten players will be based on the total score from all the games. Everyone played the same people, which is fair. 3. Finding a sweet balance between time control and fan interest is important. The 90 minute per player would make games last 2-3 hours, which is as long as many sporting events. 4. Match play can be interesting, but watching only one game over 3 weeks can be boring. The top 10 playoffs gives fans more games to be engaged in. It is also an idea to have the scores from the big round robin to carry over. . Magnus has mentioned more games and faster time control. At the end of the year, the player that had the best year in chess would be world champion.
