Not naming a 13th floor is so funny to me because you can call floor 14 floor 14 all you want but it’s still the 13th floor. If anything you’re just gonna upset the ghosts by confusing them 🤣

Reminds me of the curse of the 9th symphony among classical composers. Both Beethoven and Schubert died after writing their 9th symphonies and before they completed their 10th. Mahler wrote his 9th symphony then wrote Das Lied Von Der Erde which was structurally a symphony but was classed as a song cycle. After this he started writing his 10th symphony because he thought he'd beaten the curse but ended up dying anyway. It should probably be noted that Mahler was ostensibly the one who came up with this curse theory as well so perhaps there's a little bit of a self fulfilling prophecy in there?? 😆😆

Well, being that it's Friday the 13th 2022, I'm 71 years old and since the late 80's I have had a very bad back. So bad I was on disability for years. I was a CNA (Certified Nurses Aide) for 31 years and tending to one of my patients injurer 2 of my disks. After two surgeries I ended up worse, spending most of my life in a wheelchair. Well, today, thanks be to God, and a good Doctor, my daughter. I stood up straight and walked about for over twenty minutes. Where before I was lucky to stand up for 2 to three minutes without pain. So this Friday the 13th has been a truly blessed day for me.

If you look at a street map of Santa Monica, California, you will see that they have "Euclid" Street in place of 13th Street. This is a clever indirect reference to thirteen through the number of texts Euclid wrote on math, and a set of numbers named for Euclid.

I find this video very interesting as I've always considered Friday the 13th my lucky day. I married on Friday the 13th. Something wonderful always happens on this day and it already has today. A friend I loaned a great deal of money to several years ago, and I haven't heard from since, just delivered the money to me this morning. I'm several thousand dollars happier now. I lived in a large apartment building in NYC (built in 1951) that separated the two elevators by “odd” and “even” floors. The physical 13th story was labeled “14”, as were all the apartments on it (14A, 14B, etc). On the “odd” elevator after floors 9 & 11 was 14! I lived on an odd floor and it really threw me the first time I noticed an “even” floor on the “odd” elevator!

My dad visited China for work frequently over the last 15 years, and found that they often would not have a thirteenth floor in many of their sky rises to appease their western visitors. Floors with the number 4 (associated with death in their traditions) would also be skipped. I’ve also heard that sailors will avoid leaving ports on a Friday. Though I’m not sure how far back this belief dates. Personally, I’ve adopted the number 13 as my favorite/lucky number somewhat in defiance of superstition. While my luck tends to be lacking, lol, I’ve never noticed any connections to Fridays or thirteens, so maybe it really is lucky for me!

Being French, I can testify that 13 or Friday 13th are taken quite seriously here. Specialy with the elderly. I remember family dinners where we would count how many family members would be around the table. If it happened to be 13, one of the grandmothers would not come to make sure we were only 12. Or we would invite someone else to join in order to be 14. I'd say it tends to disapear with the younger generations.

13 can also be found in the original "Sleeping Beauty" story, 12 good fairies were invited to the princess' christening to be her godmother's, fairy #13 was not invited. Upon arriving she got a silver dinner plate whereas the first 12 received a gold dinner plate. I think that the Dan Brown connection was one that he lifted from previous writers (like much of the rest of his book) though it’s been so many years since I’ve read them that I don’t remember for sure. In any case, when I came across that idea, I didn’t interpret it as reinforcing the superstition so much as dispelling it by showing where the association may have come from. Maybe that depends on the reader though.

I just shrug it to just another busy day. I also received a high flow of patients during a full moon. I think it’s how people perceive these dates. The only thing I've found I'm superstitious about is saluting a lone magpie to counteract the 'one for sorrow' of the rhyme. I'm not sure *why* but whenever I know of someone having a baby, I find I see clusters of three or four of them, and it does always correctly hint at the baby's gender. Another good video, as usual. I do have a tiny niggle though. As a student of history since the 1960s I can attest that the idea that the arrest of the Knights Templar on Friday 13, 1307 as a reason for the fear of the day in general was around long before Dan Brown and the Da Vinci Code. I did just look up the date on the "What day of the week was it" website and it lists it as a Thursday. Wikipedia does say the raid was overnight so that would explain that discrepancy. Just thought it was worth mentioning. Thanks!

When my husband and I went on a cruise in 2022, I was surprised to find that, on board the ship, there was no level 13. Our cabin was on level 12, and we ate breakfast each morning in the buffet which was marked level 15…but it was only 2 levels above our cabin, the level above ours being 14. I didn’t know that superstition still held so much sway! I once worked at a firm, helping to onboard new employees. Everyone was assigned numbers, in chronological order. When I emailed one new (much sought after and influential) employee that his number was 13, not only did I get a phone call from him personally within minutes, but he called my boss, demanding his number be changed. I changed his number to 14, but I was astonished that an educated, experienced man like him would have a meltdown over the number 13. My family’s just not superstitious - my brother and sister-in-law got engaged on a Friday the 13th, and they labeled their picture “Our Lucky Day”. 😂

I live in Italy and the Italians have a strange relationship with the number 13. Here also, they won't set 13 places at the dinner table, but otherwise, it's actually considered a lucky number. The term "fare 13 (tredici)" means to win big. In Neapolitan symbology/numerology, 13 also corresponds to Saint Anthony, one of the patron saints of the country. Rather, Friday the 17th is considered back luck in Italy. Legend has it, in ancient Roman tradition, the word "VIXI (I lived)" was written on gravestones and it is an anagram of 17 (XVII). So, they associated the number 17 with death. Friday, of course, is associated with Good Friday and the crucifixion of Jesus. Also, according to Neapolitan symbology, the number 17 corresponds to disgrace and bad luck. Wonderful video, keep up the good work!

You mentioned the Knights Templar in the year 1307. King Philip of France, with his consent of Pope Clement V, falsly accused the Order of the Knights Templar of heresy to relieve his debts to them. They were tortured into confession and burned at the state. I just always thought it a fun day to mess with people! Back in the late 70s, while in high school, worked in a building we called the computer card. It did not have a 13th floor. That's probably when I heard of the fear of the #13. Good times😂

Another really funny thing is that most people in my Indian family have all gotten married on Fridays, including my brother who got married about a month ago. We have the Hindu ceremony on Friday, the reception usually the Saturday after or sometimes A week after on the following Saturday, And finally A more intimate gathering happens on the Sunday before the wedding couple leave for their honeymoon. If Friday is unlucky that’s probably means we’re all cursed LOL, Or at least those of us who have gotten married.

Okay I had heard that 13 was unlucky but never that Fridays themselves were unlucky. Generally I'm with people that Friday is a good day because it was the start of the weekend XD I dunno if this one came up in your research but there has been a viral post on Tumblr (yes, I am a cringe Tumblr user) where they claimed Friday 13th was considered unlucky because that date was especially important to the goddess Freya. Since she was the Norse goddess of love it apparently involved a lot of naughty stuff and when Christianity came along it therefore demonised it as the unluckiest day. Probably untrue but thought I'd throw that one in there too.

In the early 80’s…. It was an awful time for me, during 3 Friday the 13ths in a row. First one, I was driving to work, it was rainy and misty and a deer hit me while I was driving 55 mph. It hit on the right front bumper and it ruined the front bumper, tore off my mirror, crushed the passenger door all the way to the back bumper…. Second Friday the 13th, I got a very bad diagnosis from my doctor and had to have emergency surgery…. Third one, I was driving in the downtown area where I live and was doing 30-35 mph down a city street, where a car pulled out without looking and hit the right front bumper of my car, again, all the way down the left side of my car….. There were three or four years after that, when I took a vacation day on Friday the 13th after that to not put myself at risk.

An unrelated question to your video. What do you know about Herne the Hunter. Trying to research the subject from Southern California is a bit difficult to say the least. I had read a number of years ago that Herne was the Kings huntsman for Windsor woods. That he had gotten mortally wounded and was taken to a cottage in the woods where a witch healed him but that he would lose his abilities to hunt. In doing so he became depressed and hung himself. Coming back later as an apparition calling his fellow hunters to follow him. Now I read all kinds of versions. Do you know much about the legend? Is there someplace I can look this up? Thank you

A Baker's Dozen is very good. 😊 I've been trying to find if Christ's death might've been on a Friday the 13th. Assuming that he was born anywhere from 8 BC to 4 BC (not likely), and he was 33 at the time of his crucifixion, this would make the year of crucifixion from 25 AD to 29 AD. Even using google, I just can't pin down when Passover was in those years. I love your work. I've always had an interest in English history (currently reading "The White Ship"). A king worthy of your talents would be Edward II. Edward I almost bankrupted England building so many castles. I'll be looking forward to next week's episode.
