Friday the 13th is one of the many reasons I and many others don’t care what critics say. Their scathing reviews over the years have done absolutely nothing to negate the franchise’s impact and popularity.

The fact that Betsy Palmer only took the gig because she needed a new car, and still gave 100% speaks volumes about her work ethic. I have a soft spot in my heart for the first one because it was one of the first horror movies I was allowed to watch. We just watched VII last night, and enjoyed that it did something different. A telekenetic teen resurrecting him from the dead makes more sense than him getting struk by lightning. Also love that after he finds the tool shed, he just keeps going back for new weapons. Jason weilding a weed whacker is fantastic. :)

Friday the 13th (1980) is so underrated in the fanbase. It's the only film outside Part 2 that has a truly terrifying atmosphere. Camp Crystal Lake circa 1980 is instantly iconic and oozes a creepy factor at almost every corner. It's the movie that made entire generations afraid to go camping!

I love both movies but lean more towards My Bloody Valentine(not the 3D aspect tho). I think people favor F13 remake more just because it’s Jason and it’s Jason at his baddest Derek Mears was an awesome Jason(I’m still praying for Hodder to give us one more run as Jason 🤞🏾🤞🏾 though) Sorry I just always have to defend My Bloody Valentine whether it’s the remake or the original. Betsy Palmer, gave the best performance in any Friday the 13th movie, actually in any movie in this genre. you gotta remember Rotten Tomatoes reviews are written by modern day critics being critical of movies from the past (when standards were way different). these days, they are used to these terrible (mediocre at best) movies that are being pumped out by Hollywood (the originals sound like they are being written by pre-schoolers, at the same time making them focus on remakes/reboots, sequels, prequels, and non-linear timeline stories). when they see an older movie (a movie with much higher standards, even b movies), they don't know what to think and automatically say it is bad because it is not something that they are expecting by modern day standards. this is why Rotten Tomatoes does so bad with movie rating accuracy before 2007 (the year Hollywood, and our standards, took the proverbial shit).

My honest opinion as an avid fan of horror who has seen a huge number of 80s horror both mainstream and obscure and a lot of slasher movies, I think the entire franchise is boring as hell. Not bad, if it were bad it would be fun. They're just kind of dull with uninteresting kills and a villain who is beaten in every way by Michael Myers for the kind of character that he is. Nothing against anyone who likes these, I wish I was right there with you. Everything about it suggests it should be something I'd love. But somehow I just don't.

I feel like Jason X deserves more respect, especially with how overrated Jason Lives is. It serves as both a love letter and hate mail to the franchise as a whole, both a loving homage and a mocking middle finger. And by that point, the series needed Jason X more than it needed Jason Lives in '86. I know some people are quick to automatically hate it cuz "Jason In Space", meaning they missed the point. If anything, them doing the most with their pitiful budget (let's see YOU make a studio mandated movie set in space on that budget) is a throwback to the series' roots. Farmer's writing also deserved more credit. He took a throwaway concept meant to "renew public interest" and crafted a script that openly mocked the dumb stereotypes Friday helped popularize in slashers, made a number of references and homages to the previous movies (the sleeping bag kill from New Blood, the head punch Fatality from Jason Takes Manhattan, Jason waking up from a 450 year cold slumber due to horny teenagers having sex, the way Jason absolutely wrecks a group of soldiers...twice being an obvious lampoon of the beginning of Jason Goes To Hell, just to name a few) and even reworks the drunk caretaker's fourth wall breaking dig at the audience in Jason Lives ("some folks got a strange sense of entertainment") into Rowan taking a low blow at New Line for Jason X itself being little more than a cash grab ("in the end, it all comes down to money"). All while maintaining an actual balance of funny and serious. I give it bonus points for Farmer having the balls to make reference to the campiest scene in Jason Lives (the paintball scene) and actually killing his own character off in that scene (the VR scene).

I've seen all the Fridays on opening weekend and I can testify part 3 was a lot of fun in the theater with the 3D gimmick. The audience really got into it and while not exactly a scaritying movie the audience seemed to have a good time. JGTH was a miserable experience and the audience, what audience there was didn't like it any more than I did. Jason Takes Manhattan also pissed everyone off. Imo the one that took the cheese in terms of audience enjoyment was part 6 by a mile. Reviews back then were always going to be negative toward any slasher franchise since it was print media doing the reviewing. They were about as reliable as RT is today.

That's the biggest flaw with the film. It's hard to have a 'whodunnit' mystery when the perpetrator of the crime(s) doesn't even appear in the film until the reveal. She should have been a worker at the diner or at the convenience store in town at the beginning or something. If you're going have a mystery and say 'the butler did it with the candlestick in the lounge' then the butler needs to actually appear and have some dialogue prior to the reveal/climax for foreshadowing purposes.

In general, horror movies 🎬 🎞 🎥 have always ranked low. Be it Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Hellraiser, Candyman, Scream have all been rated low at some time. It always baffles me that people critique horror movies like they do.

The thing is Jason takes manhattan could of been so awesome just because the location alone but they barely even use the location they just have the characters run in Allie’s most of the time and could of had cooler set up and cooler location set pieces but no or they literally could of just had the entire movie in the ship could of been a better location for the movie honestly but the thing I want more than anything is a Friday the 13th movie in the snow

Here's my ranking for the movies. I'll try to give a small explanation for each one without going into a massive tangent. No promises. 12.) Jason Goes To Hell - I hate this movie so much. Jason was potrayed as more cruel and sadistic unlike how he was in the previous movies. I also hate some of the unnecessary retcons like Jason having a half-sister and other family members, being a Deadite from Evil Dead, and Jason being a widely known individual instead of being a boogeyman or urban legend. There's only three things I liked in this movie: Steven, Creighton Duke, and the FBI shootout. 11.) Jason Takes Manhattan - The movie felt misleading since most of the movie is on a cruise ship. None of the characters were memorable and it had a very confusing ending. Also, how is Crystal Lake connected to the Atlantic Ocean? 10.) Jason X - I'll fully admit that this is guilty pleasure for me to watch. The whole concept is ridiculous as all hell and shouldn't be taken seriously. We all know this was a cash grab to buy New Line Cinema more time for Freddy Vs Jason. 9.) Friday The 13th (1980) - I know this blasphemous to put it this low on the list. I respect its place in horror history, but at the end of the day, it's just a Halloween rip-off with a weak plot twist. Let's face it: Jason is the face of the franchise, not Pamela. 8.) The New Blood - I don't have much to say about this film. Kane Hodder was fantastic, Jason looked like a badass, and I kinda liked Tina. 7.) Part 2 - This movie set the template for the franchise past this point and I enjoyed Ginny as the final girl. Wasn't a fan of Jason's appearance in the movie. 6.) A New Beginning - I've grown to like this movie more as I got older. Still not a huge fan of Roy being the killer. I liked that Tommy was more psychologically disturbed. I just wish he had more of a bond with Pam and Reggie. 5.) Part 3 - The 3D gimmick was the only thing that annoyed me. Other than that, I thought it was solid. 4.) Freddy Vs. Jason - I'll fully admit the teenagers in this movie was a big snoozefest. However, I did like the Springwood conspiracy of trying keep the knowledge of Freddy away from the public as well as locking up and drugging those who are aware of Freddy's existence. I also liked Freddy using Jason as a pawn to get everyone to fear him again. As for Jason himself, he's back to being a villain that you can feel some pity unlike how he was portrayed in Jason Goes To Hell. The only problem I have with Jason is how he moved like a moving statue. Too damn stiff. Kane Hodder was able to bring consistenty to Jason on how he moved, breathed, and behaved. 3.) Jason Lives - I love this movie. Great balance of light-hearted comedy with horror. Nice change from the usual formula without going overboard. 2.) Friday The 13th (2009) - This probably shocked you to find the remake very high on my ranking. I like that the movie went back to basics after Jason's adventures in Springwood and outer space. I also liked that Jason was back to being human again and acts more like a survivalist. The movie also made Jason smarter by him setting up traps and setting up alarm systems to warn him when there's trespassers. 1.) The Final Chapter - What can I say about it that hasn't already been said? Loved the Jarvis Family, especially Trish for.... um... obvious reasons, the teenagers were more likable than normal, and Jason was at his scariest during his human years.

It was at a time when horror wasn't taken seriously. Siskel and Ebert would at best praise the potential of the people working on it, like say John Carpenter and Stuart Gordon. However when it came to Slasher or overtly Gory Horror Films, they go nuts regarding Friday The 13th. With the exception of Jason X, they reviewed all 9 Friday movies together. They hated every single one of them. Since they were big guys, no one but late teenagers and some adult outcasts would go to see this movie. They happen to have a lot of Dough. Hence why Paramount and later New Line kept going. I personally love the movies. I once on Halloween walked all over Downtown Toronto dressed like Jason Voorhees. It was only because it was released at a bad time for movies in general. It would have happened to a lot of other movies in the 80s.

I think that’s too simple of a view on them. They praised Last House on the Left which deals with heavy themes, and Evil Dead which is a splatter film. I think the main issue they had with it was how they treated women. I’m aware that they missed a ton of nuisance to gender in horror than they would say, but during that time it would be understandable opinion.

The reason Friday the 13th (1980) is the only one that scores higher than the other films is probably because it has more reviews and more audience has seen it. I think way more non-Jason non-horror fans have seen the original than they have seen the others.

I think it's a masterpiece. While it centers around a killer and an ominous occasion, it also differs from Halloween entirely in that the danger is kept completely out of sight until the final minutes of the film. This changes the dynamic. Halloween shows you the threat...Dr. Loomis explains it, as best anyone can...and they show you the villain doing things, like killing a Doberman with his bare hands, so that you know that he's a serious threat to whoever he goes after. Fair enough. But there is something about having people killed, or disappear, and keeping the threat off camera, that conjures up a different aura. It leaves the whole proceeding feeling as if there is a palpable air of doom hanging over everything. Halloween was more suspenseful....but Friday is its' equal when looked upon through the prism of pure horror.

9:53 I think that has to do with the cut and paste of the franchise, not the reviews. I also need to make a comment on the first Friday the 13th being number one; it might just be number one even by film critics but the important piece of info is that rotten tomatoes is not only composed of professional film critics. The majority (or at least 50%) are individuals with their own websites or KZbin channels. consensus I personaly am more of a nonhorror fan, and enjoy looking at films with more of a critical eye than that of a fanboy (not that it's bad). So I agree more with rotten tomatoes; not on the way it's ranked (I have no interest in ranking them myself), just that I agree that most - if not all - of the Friday the 13th films don't do it for me - Halloween is better!
