Gateshead High St Is DEAD! + Security Staff Challenge Me For Filming!

Since making this video I have clarified the land ownership of the pedestrianised area of Trinity Square.
That land is privately owned but of course it is open for public access and public right of way.
In terms of the current law in England; being in a ‘public place’ and being in an area ‘accessible to the public’ are two entirely different things. You can think of Trinity Square as being of a similar environment to Eldon Square (without a roof). If the land owner stipulates that filming is prohibited, then it is and they have the right to ask someone to stop filming.
Therefore the security guard is quite within his right to ask me to stop filming, entirely if needs be, but he didn’t and on this occasion I thought he dealt with me very politely and professionally.
In terms of lawful powers to prevent filming on private property, this is a topic some KZbin auditors love to exploit, but fail to differentiate between what’s lawful and what’s enforceable. They will then bully the individual, causing humiliation and embarrassment.
For example, the security guard wouldn’t be allowed to put their hands on me and forcibly remove, or detain me, unless I was committing a criminal offence (which I wasn’t), in order to make a citizen’s arrest. I would have been committing an offence of trespass, this is a civil offence. Should the security guard have insisted I stop filming, or leave and I didn’t, they can (in theory) pursue a civil trespass prosecution, but only if they have one’s name and address. You can see how this situation can easily be exploited.
I know the law on filming in public very well, but in the moment he informed me that it was private land I didn’t want to be behave like a prat, as I wasn’t in a position to challenge him on the land ownership.
So, what I wasn’t going to do, was to attract unnecessary attention to myself and to place him in the potentially embarrassing position of attempting to deal with me, should I have adopted a dogmatic stance on this. I think this is unnecessarily provocative and ignorant.

Lived in and around London for 15 years and been back to north east in Gateshead since October last year. I was shocked by how many druggies there were in the town centre, divvies riding pit bikes in the housing estates, 40 year olds blasting new monkey in their Zafira whilst picking up the kids from school 😂 I get that it happens in a lot of places but some of the behaviour up here is just embarrassing.

Great video Eddy, drinking back in the late 80s it was top notch. But these plans for the town centre have been on ice for years, I think the only thing they have done is open the road up from Sunderland Road. One thing they need to do is allow security to get rid of those toerags who always hang about just off Jackson Street.

aye as kaybee says. its not private property its a public street , the landowner is the Council , the company running the centre/mall is private but on public land. its open to the public. otherwise every shoplifter would be committing burglary (theft as a trespasser ) not shoplifting lol and the local police wouldnt want those figures.

The High Street was thriving when I grew up in Gateshead in the 1970s. The empty plot you passed used to be Gateshead Odeon cinema. The flyover system built in the late '60s only succeeded in taking people straight into Newcastle, thus avoiding Gateshead. The Metro system from 1981 did the same. The Metrocentre in 1986 was another hammer blow to the town centre. Sad to see now.

Agree with your assessment in general I’m was born on Gateshead high street and grew up living there - so I have an affinity with the place That’s the reason me and my partners have decided to help regenerate the place We own The Tynesider It’s just a pity you came on a day we were closed for maintenance issues and snagging - I would’ve invited you in We have also purchased the building next door which we plan to turn into high spec apartments and I’m also involved in the potential refurb of the old Kwik Save building you passed We are now fully commited to making Gateshead High street a decent place again Watch this space Be my guest to call into The Tynesider for a beer sometime You may be surprised Keep up the good work

Love your videos, saw you at the Bigg Market Reunion. I’m Lee’s partner and grew up and live in Gateshead. Lee couldn’t be more local to the High Street as was born on the street behind where his parents still live now. I thought he was mad when he told me he wanted to open a pub on the High Street but it’s really great that there’s independents popping up now. Sapori Italian restaurant is a lovely place and the bars around the Railway Quarter are a great night out and definitely putting Gateshead on the social map again. We are both really passionate about improving the area it’s sad that’s the state of our High Street. I’m involved in a few community and volunteer projects . There’s the Big Help Out this weekend which is an initiative to improve Gateshead town centre asking volunteers to help paint fences, plant flowers and litter pick this Friday and Saturday. Cheers from Seattle Eddy! The Dean Taxis sighting made me homesick. Thanks for the update on my home town. I know it’s kind of sad when they try to modernise old towns like Gateshead and they end up becoming clinical, cookie cutter modern shopping areas with Vue cinemas etc (and jobsworthy security guards!) but I do think it’d be good for Gateshead if they somehow modernised/rejuvenated the old high street as well, or at least redeveloped or made it a more desirable place for people to live/work/play. Hopefully by giving a better life to the community it’ll help heal some of the more troubled or addicted people who now tend to hang around there. They need better opportunities for life!

Should have gone to the dead Civic Center, get Martin Gannon out to explain the mess. He might be in the bar if they still have one. The rent office has gone, so I take it the bar is still in there. Watch how Gateshead changes for the better when he's gone. He could be down the quayside, sucking up to developers. Telling locals it brings people to the area to spend money, that Gateshead never sees.

Another good video Eddie. I've said it for ages, Gateshead town centre is hands down the worst town centre in Tyne & Wear. Place has always been rough. Only place I've ever been mugged in broad daylight. T'was always thus, though. Ironically, Gateshead has some nice suburbs (and I live in one), so it's not all bad! However, I think they should just level the south side and build some decent housing. The place is more or less unviable with the toon on it's doorstep. Be a good place to live for workers in the city centre.

The council are to blame for the state of the place. They have made it a nightmare to drive around the place to get parked with bus lanes and blocked off roads. If there not careful Newcastle will follow because they’ve done the same over there to.They have some kind of war going on with motorists and it’s driving people away.

I used to love to come to Gateshead to shop in the indoor market. I used to get the red Go North East bus from Wallsend. I'm from Glasgow but I used to stay down in Gateshead for 5 years.i used to go into the Blue Bell pub to watch the Glasgow Rangers matches. I still come down to Gateshead/ Newcastle about 6 times a year. And I've said for years that the Gateshead council have let the people of Gateshead down by letting the High Street get into the state it now finds its self in. When the Blue bell closed a few years ago I heard it was because that whole block of shops were getting compulsory purchased by the council. And years later still nothing has happened.

Anyway I got offered a council house in New biggin Hall Newcastle so jumped at the chance and took it now bare in mind Newbiggin Hall has a bad reputation too but compared to gateshead it was a step up 😂😂😂

I remember the old markets, signing in the old Tesco car park and city centre for school during Xmas and I remember the weekend markets and being sick on the rugs for sale after too much strawberry milkshake! Used to live in Gateshead from 1997 when I was born and then moved over Newcastle in my teens, so I've spent half my life in Gateshead and half in Newcastle. I have to say moving over to Newcastle really made my love for NUFC grow. Love the Bridges in Newcastle have hundreds of photographs now and memories exploring. Dominated Gateshead in the 197os, with a great toy department on the top floor next to the cafe and bikes and fishing rods - nice to look at even if needed a lot of saving up. Littlewoods in Northumberland Street Newcastle, but can’t remember going in one in Gateshead. Don’t suppose there’s anything left of the Gateshead Odeon- happy memories of being taken to see Where Eagles Dare and The Battle of Britain amongst other greats. But as for the privatisation of the public realm by the likes of Tesco with their cctv and security guards……they might be better off dealing with shop lifters than decent folk doing a vlog…..but that would involve being useful to society.

Shepard’s of Gateshead, as advertised in all the flea pits. All Gateshead seems to offer now is charity shops, and “ take aways”. I think the Metro Centre, and Team Valley helped kill it. Were it not for “Get Carter”, absolutely no one would care. I guess it’s Mackem equivalent would be Southwick, which, tbf, looks a bit more lively. Another good video Eddy.

The discussion with the security chap was well handled and you're right - what's the point of trying to annoy anyone by taking it further? Unlike some youtubers usually with drones who's whole purpose seems to be to annoy people.

Thank you, I haven't been to Gateshead for must be 15-20 years now, I am pleasantly surprised with the Tesco complex, the overall vibe seems really nice, might take a ride to Costa one time. There seems to be a trend on youtube for people to seek out anything horrible in towns and are quick to label it, that in my opinion escalates on social media and gives a place an unjustified reputation. When I was a kid in SE London, back in the fifties there would be all sorts of run down areas, old bomb sites etc, but we all just got on with things, we didn't just slag everything off, we all need to be more positive.

Enjoyed the tour and yes its high street is pretty grim indeed. I like Gateshead in general and regularly support the small businesses in The Arches as well as in Trinity Square. Easy access from the metro and the number 27 Bus. Have seen it all get worse in the 5 years I have been back in the northeast but good to hear of a regeneration plan. Looking forward to your next tour!!

Ha ha, that was surreal. I’m a busker, and have been for decades now. I tried to busk in Trinity Square once, and got the same reaction as you from the security guards; if not a little less polite and nervous (he was, and quiet rightly so). They were more forcefull with me, they came heavy handed and not alone. The crazy thing is if I’m and inch the other side of the bollards he mentioned there’s not a thing they can do. If I do busk now, it’s either the entrance to the Metro, or on Bewick Way facing the upstairs windows of your gym, but there I constantly get asked for busfares to get back home (that’s how it’s worded) from the mental-heads that hang around the area. But in their defence, some of the best crack/craic I’ve had in Gateshead has been from the mental-heads. I just never know. I’ve never felt threatened there though; apart from the security guards. Keep on keeping it real.

My Mam and Grandparents are originally from Gateshead. They used to live on the hill at Clyde street, Bensham? My uncle and auntie lived in the Felling so happy memories of Gateshead. Last Christmas at the age of 64 I was over on holiday from Malta where I now live and re visited Clyde Street for the first time in 58 years. Little has changed but it felt good seeing the place again.

You should definitely do a mini pub crawl round there. I'm thinking of organising a food & drink tour, start at Tynesider, Sapori, Railway East, Central, Microbus, Axis, Victor Indigo November or do it in reverse and then do all the bars south end of High Street - only for the hardcore 🤣

I still live in Gateshead and it is absolutely disgraceful, like you I used to go to Gateshead with my Mam in the 70s when I was a kid and she’d take me to Laws herbalist for a glass of Sarsaparilla. I used to go to Woolworths and buy my records and a bag of Pick and Mix. I used to love the indoor market as well, you could buy anything in there. I loved the Trafalgar as well when I got old enough to have a drink. It’s sad to see it now. 6:01 6:01

Mate loved your video and being an ex-Gateshead lad living in Australia its' depressing to see how bad the High Street has become. It all started with the Tories in the 80's and the shutting down of industries and the relocation of jobs to the south to shore up their numbers politically. I remember being a young bloke working for Clarkie's when Thatcher turned up to open new state of the art facilities for North East Nuclear Power Industries and it was gone within a couple of years. The people of the North East are Stoic and resilient and all they need is an opportunity to prove it. Again, Mate a great video (pity about the purple patch at the beginning).

I've lived in Gateshead for the past four years or so, probably five minutes walk from where you filmed, I engage with this area on a daily basis. I am sad to see how run down the vast majority of Gateshead Town Centre (and indeed other areas in Gateshead) have become. It seems that if you're not Eldon Square, the Metro Centre or Trinity Square there's no real chance - and even those areas mentioned are struggling. I would be interested to see footage of Gateshead High Street in the 80s and see it actually full of life. I had no idea about the proposed redevelopment plans, despite living across the road from the Civic Centre in Gateshead (that building deserves a video of it's own) and welcome any change that could turn the High Street into something useful and attract better clientele than those who sit outside the needle exchange arguing over nonsense every single day.

I used to love Laws herbal shop for a sasperella. Grew up in Gateshead in the 90s and sadly its a million miles away from what it used to be. The times i have been back i genuinely feel unsafe, too many unsavoury characters. Whatever the council did during lockdown to the road layouts have just made driving around there a nightmare too.

Eddy, it was great watching this video...brought back some happy childhood memories of my own! I was born on the Ellen Wilkinson Estate in Wardley but moved at the age of 4 to an old terraced house with my mum & dad & brother (2up 2down) just off the high street (same side as the old Odeon picture house) - just where the police station is now! We lived there for a couple of years before moving to Beacon Lough East...Gateshead centre was really busy and noisy in those days...I remember "Laws" where Mum would treat us to a lovely black Sarsparilla drink, yummy! I loved going into "Shepherds" (it wasn't on the High Street) and I loved the advert and little jingle that went with it !...it's toy department was great. I remember my mum dragging me into Woolworths or Littlewoods (both on the high street) for shopping (a few years later a school friend would work on the cheese counter -Saturday job- in Littlewoods!) I had a Saturday job in a fruit/veg/flower shop just down the street and opposite to Tescos - it was part of the old dark shopping market under the "Get Carter" car park! I loved those times...as soon as the Metrocentre opened Gateshead High Street had the life and soul sucked out of it ...and it's never really recovered since. Even with the investment that got rid of the 1970s car park...it hasn't really taken off and as soon as something closes down, you get the same old cheap shops taking over and as such towns lose their identity! Sad really. As for Park Lane - I went to one of two really good Christmas and private parties in there with disco music and disco balls overhead - great atmosphere, never any trouble!

you just cannot believe how this government and a labour government has destroyed the high streets but what i do not get is the councils not lowering rates for shops to just survive you would think having some money going back into the area would be better then having closed up shops and not brining in any money at all

we go to the same gym. The problem is that a lot of the shops there were niche, the ones that weren't are surviving. I do think we could get away with the proposals of turning much of the buildings into a nicer area for relaxing, maybe add a library, cafes, some greenery, etc. It is an absolutely shocking transition when you leave trinity to see what its like around it. It absolutely needs a face lift and sooner rather than later.
