One should not forget why the Gepard was developed in the 1960s and what its actual task was, namely to advance with tank units and protect them against attack helicopters and low-lying fighter aircraft such as the SU-25 Froogfoot. What he's dealing with now in Ukraine are easy targets for the Gepard's abilities, like on a practice shooting range. Slow drones or cruise missiles that don't even change course when attacked. The Gepard's radar is still so good at detecting a single bird. A soldier with a Stinger may have a longer range, but he has no radar to detect incoming targets early, and there is no antidote to the Gepard's 35mm shells, only good luck not to get hit...

you may call it "old". but do not call it "unsophisticated". it is the most sophisticated tank ever produced in germany and it was the most expensive vehicle of the german bundeswehr. the german crews of gepard were known to be the most skilled and best trained tank crews ever. having a gepard as opponent means to be under fire of merciless precision, at least three seconds after being identified. if the word "sophisticated" didn't exist, we would have to invent it, to describe the properties of gepard.

@@rusticbox9908 or possibly they are mistaken for a bird. The small drones are around the size of a bird after all.
@williamzk908310 ай бұрын
@@rusticbox9908 Many of these problems are a result of the parameters of the various Filters. For instance there is the Doppler filter which can measure movement in certain directions (not tangentialy) by measuring phase change. Then there is the audio filter which as the radar emits say 10000 pulses/second detects the audio frequencies from propellers, rotors, jet engine turbines, fans and bird wings. Then there is the Moving Target Indicator. This is done by subtracting a memory recording of a pulse return from the current pulse return. Thus if the target has changed distance or moved out of the beam it shows up. All this used to be done in the 1940s with acoustic dleay line memory. Finally it is possible to record the background clutter in each sweep or rotation and not the differences when a target moves in. Modern digital memory makes this easier. A electronically scanned system that can scan both vertically and to each side can also detect movement much better. -Detecting micro drones is mainly hard because the radars haven't been parameterized. -The new special radars 9which already exist to protect sporting venues and air ports from drones) will be able to detect and destroy micro drones.
@rusticbox990810 ай бұрын
@@williamzk9083 I know this, but micro drones are just flying way too low and their returns are indistinguishable from the background noises and Filtered out, the radar will need further upgrades going into higher bands requiring more power. The pansirs didn't have this problem in the middle east because of the terrain but faced the same problems In Ukraine.

This design is proving itself against the test of time. This brings to mind the M2 50 caliber machine gun which was developed for WWI. The US Army tried to make their own vehicle like this but it could never successfully complete its tests. As long as the radar systems are upgraded when needed this weapon could stay in the field for many years. I could also see the German Army reintroducing this weapon back into its army. No one saw its usefulness against drones, cruise missiles or low flying aircraft. Very impressive.

radar has always been the challenging aspect of a detection system. if the radar cant detect small drone, its not useful at all. there are even smaller drone the U.S used. its small as your palm of your hand. this is very challenging for any radar system. if you can spot the enemies, sending missile on the way is hard task to stop - even artillery shell. modern warfare fight with these type of things that is cheap and effective. gorilla warfare is with a country that has no advance technologies so its battle is mostly with assault rifle and sniper.

Gepards' 35x228mm has a APDS (Armor Piercing Discarding Sabot) version. While it is not a tank buster by any means, it has a decent penetration of 65mm at 1.000m. It could be unpleasant for older tanks side armor (early T-72's at best) at close range but would fare well against anything lighter (AFV's, IFV's etc). I'm not sure if it can cause significant spalling in newer tanks, but it could still destroy optics and achieve a mission-kill rather than a hard-kill. In practice, Gepards only carried a handful of these rounds (20-40) as a last-ditch self defense. If your Gepard comes face to face with a tank, something has gone very wrong already.

@rolandxor17910 ай бұрын
There is a C-RAM system called MANTIS that could potentially be modified to work on a mobile chassis. But the reason there is no upgrade is because this system is supposedly very complex and expensive to maintain. It is not like a relatively simple MANPAD which has largely replaced it.
@rolandxor17910 ай бұрын
There is a huge interest in making all air defense mobile. As static systems are just very vulnerable to counter battery fire or anti radiation drones and missiles.
@williamzk908310 ай бұрын
The replacement system is “SkyNEX” of which two prototypes have already been delivered to Ukraine. It looks like MANTIS but is new. It’ll be mounted on a 6x6 armoured truck or a BOXER 8x8 IFV. It has provision for any MANPADS on the side turret. SkyNEX has special radar to track and target swarming micro drones . With maybe a RBS70 missile it’ll reach to over 8km. -The Germans are developing the LFK NG missile which is in essence a 1/4 sized vertical launched IRIS/T. The missiles and radar will be in seperate vehicles easy to hide. A Wiesel tracked vehicle if it passes over grass leaves no tracks after 1.5 hours.
@rolandxor17910 ай бұрын
@@williamzk9083 I looked it up but it isn't as mobile it works with a static radar housed in a seperate container. I think the best integration would be on a Lynx or Puma IFV and then like the Gepard / Cheetah it will need a search and tracking radar attached.

@@rolandxor179 Technically the SkyNEX, Sjyguard, Skyshiel are elements and variants of the same system. My bad, What I wanted to refer to was SkyRanger 30 and SkyRanger 35 which is the mobile version system for use on a Boxer IFV. In this system the 5 AESA antenna are integrated around the turret able to track microdrones to 5km. The SkyNEX system purchased by Qatar is extremely capable and able to handle 80 simultaneous targets with its guns and missiles.

They've taken out Pantsires, BUK and Strela-10 as well as a range of SP artillery and tanks. 3/ Lancets are being completely jammed in the Kerson region right now which has allowed the Ukrainians Forces to cross the river while Russian forces are overwhelmed byu Ukrainian Artillery i the Area. 4/ Finally Gepard is a 1970s system that received a modest fire control and radar upgrade in 2006. It is not state of the art and can not deal with mini drones like Lancet., It can destroy Shahad drones and Kalibr cruise missiles like a Turkey shoot very cost effectively. 5/ A 2020 version of the Gepard would have a PESA 4D search radar with electronic scanning in height and about 45 degrees to either side. It would be nearly impossible to direction find and detect and it would easily detect and classify swarming drones. The guns would have a programmable air burst to swat targets out of the sky. 6/ That system already exists. Its called SkyNEX. Two prototypes have been delivered to Ukraine already. It will be the end of Lancet once it is produced in enough numbers.

The Gepards are being used mainly to destroy shahad drones and kalibr cruise missiles to protect the civilian population. The range of the guns is 3.5km only though firing can commence at 4km so it’s not enough to shoot down an attack helicopter using missiles with twice this range. The Gepards so-round cities or are back out of range of Russian artillery but provide MANPADS operators of warning. Yes they are limited in range but the are cost effective at stopping cruise missiles

The is video of Gepards shooting down Kalibir cruise missiles. There are pictures of Pantsirs failing to maintain a lock on Storm Shadow cruise missiles. Pantrise is a big cluimsy easy to target system with too many components. Gepards did not work alone, they worked with Roland SHORAD missiles and later Stinger or other MANPADS firing Ozelot Wiesels. The Ozelots had IRST and could engage at night but worked well with the Gepards. The Gepard was retired in 2011 because it was seen as vulnerable but mainly budgetary reasons. -Gepard is highly cost effective at destroying Russian shahad drones and at destroying any kalbr cruise missiles that comes within 3 km. It's pretty much a Turkey shoot.

@@hansrudel5344 Gepard shoots a much larger 35mm round than Pantsir's 30mm round. Some of the APDS/T rounds have a mussle velocity of: 1,440 m/s. The Gepards guns shoot at 550 rounds but more modern versions of the 35mm do 1100 rounds. I suggest that Pantsirs 30mm guns have never been of any use.

This has already happened in the history of the wars between Russia and Germany. Then it was the tanks Tiger and Panther. The Germans have no imagination. Russians 80 years ago already defeated the entire family of cats.
@williamzk908310 ай бұрын
80 years ago Russia defeated Germany with the help of the USA and UK. In fact Russia would have lost the war without the US and UK. For every 5 T-34 lost the Germans lost less than 3 of their tanks. With 95% of T-34 produced being destroyed then if the Germans had of gotten losses down to 2.5 they would have won the war. The British supplied 4000 tanks before 1942 when the T-34 was total Rubbish whose optics had 30% of the light gathering capability of German optics. Lee Grants, Valiants whose 6 pounder gun out performed the 76mm gun of the T34. The US supplied 4000 M4 Sherman's after 1942. On top of that there were over 600,000 Trucks (200,000 6WD and 400,000 4WD) over 1000 Hurricane and Spitfires (before 1942 was out) and nearly 6000 P-39, thousands B-25 Mitchell's and C-47 Dakotas. -Almost all of the meat in Russian Army Ration Packs was American Meat. Most the of the Aviation fuel was US supplied and 10% total of all fuel was US supplied. -In 1942 at the same time as the German defeat at Stalingrad the British accepted the Surrender of Rommel's army in North Africa. This was as big a loss of men and equipment as Stalingrad and had the Germans not been needing to supply North Africa the Ju 52, Me 323, He 111 and escort fighters could have supplied the Stalingrad airlift. Of course the British did not create conditions of starvation and disease in their POW camps that murdered 95% of their POW like Russia did. -In 1943 the allies invaded Sicily and then Salerno Italy (before D-day) drawing away German resources from Russia. Patrons army got to Czechoslovakia and East Germany before Russia did via Italy. -In 1944 the allies opened up a 3rd front in France at Normandy after having destroyed German oil production in the preceding 5 months. -Had it not been for the allied bombing campaign of Germany which reduced German production by 40% thee would have been 6000 Panthers instead of 4000 produced and they would all have been on the Eastern front instead of Normandy. The same applies to Panzer IV and StuG and Tiger I and II. -The Germans would have had plenty of fuel to outmaneuver Russian tanks. -Hundreds of thousands of German Soldiers kept in France, Italy would have been fighting Russia. Thousands of fighters and bombers used on the Western front would have been used against Russia. -Oh and it was Ukrainians fighting the Germans.
