Ukrainian soldiers show off Gepard anti-aircraft gun system

Ukrainian soldiers protecting skies in the Kyiv region showed anti-aircraft-gun Gepard on Friday (June 30), commenting on its effectiveness.
“This is a universal self-propelled anti-aircraft-gun,” Said Roman, Gepard unit commander, adding that it can intercept both land and airborne targets including Shakhed-type drones and cruise missiles.
The one-and-a-half-month training took place in Germany and was effective, according to Oleksii, the unit’s marksman.
“It (the training) was fast-paced because we had to come back fast and already be trained. We were taught good and we know the equipment well,” he added.
The system is part of a multi-layered air defense network that Ukraine is trying to develop with a range of Western systems to thwart Russian air attacks.
The strikes, which regularly kill civilians, look at least in part aimed at depleting air defense stocks so that fewer systems can be used to protect troops trying to advance under Russian air superiority, Kyiv officials say.
In the month of May alone, Ukraine’s Air Force reported shooting down 149 cruise missiles, 399 drones, seven hypersonic Kinzhal missiles, three ballistic missiles as well as 11 Iskander missiles of two different types.

In the 80s, I sat in a Bo-105 anti-tank helicopter and tried to attack a few Gepards in a maneuver. I always was hit before I could fire at them properly. That thing is a beast.

Did you use BO-105 with HOT ATGM? I remember HOT ATGM has a distance of 4KM, right? Wow, Gepard can reach a helicoptor at 4KM, it is amazing for a SPAAG system.

The Bo 105 crews were regarded with concern and admiration. This small agile precisely controllable helicopter had a roof mounted sight and could hover and interdict below the tree line and usually got of a couple of missiles without being detected or seen or it being possible to fire at them. I'm glad we had them. That Russian Ka 52 that got waxed by a Ukraine special forces Stugna-P ATGM has all of its sensors mounted low so it had to hover above the tree line.

Brimstone, the British version of Hellfire modified for supersonic release, can shoot 20km when attacking ground targets in ground to ground mode. Not only are western missiles not behind, we are ahead. Unfortunately Europe was peaceful (1.2% of GDP defense spending) and industrious and compassionately spending its money on integration Eastern Europe while Russia was Treacherously spending its ill gotten oil wreath on weapons at a rate of 6% of GDP. -The Gepard's were indeed retired because although they are deadly to 3.5km their range was too short. Unfortunately under the Merkel Government the replacements were not funded nort he side mounted missiles.

As a German I feel a bit proud, that the very old Gepards work fine for the Ukrainian war, defeinding their homes and their people, even if they where designed long long time ago for another war, which -thanks god - never happened.

i think they have been mothballed too soon - in times when no one thought about drone-wars. Germany may want to reconsider, because as good as the mantis and missiles systems are - the gebhard is highly mobile -and the ammo is comparatively cheap... as mobile point defense / last ditch intercept units theyre very useful, the UA forces use them correctly.

But obviously russia has not managed to get their hands on one, otherwise their media would be full of that. No tank is invincible. Even if the T-14 was not a paper tiger, it would be vulnerable to helicopters, artillery, ... What matters is the crew. You cant replace an experienced tanker crew easily, but a tank can be repaired or a new one built.

a drone not helps you against flying objects. The Gepard use his modern Radar to find drones, cruise missiles, Helicopters or Jets. The Gepard is an anti-aircraft tank for defense not for attack.
