Germany's manufacturing industry is not doing well. China has taken a big chunk of the advanced machinery and automotive market, and with massive shortages of qualified workers and failure to adapt to new market opportunities, are we seeing the decline of "German Made"?

Germany here, the closing of the nuclear plants involved a lot of populism, but infact it did not really matter and also was planned for years. I personally like nuclear energy but this did not really affect our current crisis. I think the real reasons are besides the rising energy prices mainly that for years the Government under Angela Merkel was making Infrastructure cuts. This combined with our goal of dont taking anymore (government) debts are far more important reasons

Germany also succeeded because their engineering, quality had high standards, they had a culture of excellence and allowed industry to flourish. Don’t boil that down to cheap Russian gas. If all it took was cheap Russian gas then Russia would build all the cars and factories on the planet. Of course German cars now are losing to global competitors because they have abandoned their past attitude towards quality.

I don't think that's particularly accurate Germany still maintains a high quality standard. Their problem is multifaceted, one is that like in the video it is true that Germany heavily relied on cheap oil imports to power their industrial base. But it's not the sole issue they face. Next is their ageing demographics that are slowly impacting not only their key industries but their society and country as a whole. Next is a very important issue with their cost effectiveness ratio, they can make high quality goods but that comes at a pretty high price. Think of it like this, would rather have a very tasty burger for a $100 dollars or have a pretty good burger while not nearly as tasty as the $100 dollar burger but still pretty good for like $10 bucks. They are facing this kind of issue right now, there many alternatives who are steadily increasing their quality at cheaper prices due to their inherent cost advantages some fair others not fairly. Although I disagree with the video about it's talk about China, because other notoriety for being very cheap low quality knockoff garbage. But they still face a challenge to Germany not really on quality but more on quantity and price. Plus on top of that increased competition from other countries as well. From Poland to Mexico ect.. this is not only an issue faced by Germany but most Western nations a large part of this is due to inflation which is a slow acting poison that slowly kills their cost effectiveness. So while it's not simply cheap Russian gas, nor China or as you said they are forgetting quality it's a combination of factors that are leading to this. Its not just one major issue it's multiple issues.

@@noticedruid4985While you are generally correct, your allegory should be more like: Germany was making burgers for $10 and because they were great, they were selling them for $100, ppl happily paying for them. But over time, those burgers are more and more sloppy costs have risen to $40 and that Chinese sweatshop over the lake has burgers that used to be shamed for how poorly they were made - but now they are only slightly worse - and they are able to make them for $30 and are willing to sell for $50…

Drive a German car and you will see they prioritize precision over longevity. Once those tolerances get a bit sloppy, good night. Japan was very good at longevity, not so much anymore. China has ridden the coat tails of all the other advancing nations and undercut on price.

China's engineering rise in the last decade is actually the fault of Germany allowing foreign investment to gain control of its corporate institutions. China actually is invested heavily in several major german manufacturers like Daimler AG, whos largest shareholder is BIAC, a China owned investment group. This is the reason much of the manufacturing of parts for Mercedes and vehicles have moved to China. It is being directed that way by the influence of the largest shareholder on the board of directors. Other manufacturers have had to move parts of their production to China as well to keep up. We may see this come to an end in the next few years as the technology ban on China is already hurting them and it will reduce their access to the newest high tech manufacturing equipment. Making it not only hard to get new equipment but also to replace the high tech components of the equipment they already have as it fails.
