Digital fitness apps make me wonder if they are accurate, and to find that out, I do some tests. Our first contestant is Google Fit.

I was absolutely pissed with Google Fit today. I'm getting back into cycling after a major injury and have been easing myself into it. I biked about 3-4km today. Fit measured that accurately at first. After I finished the workout and stopped the Fit tracker, it marked it down to 1km only. 🤦‍♀️ Definitely looking into alternatives now. This video helps a lot in finding an alt.

I'm mostly concerned about Google's BMR calculation because it's 1500 for me, but other calculators give me 1800+ which is a significant difference when trying to calculate a 500 calorie daily deficit. And according to my weight loss, my daily average is up to 700 calories deficit. So I'm doing fine but constantly stressing over the numbers.

The wife and I have the same phone, we walk the same speed and distance every day. The readings we get are all over the place when we compare them. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Google Fit also tracks your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate), so I think it counts this differently for men/women. I don't know for sure, but you both travel the same distance and the data is different, so this is the only plausible explanation I can think of.

No. The Google Fit app will work great.

I also use map my walk/ride. Calories burned tend to be higher than Google fit. So I'll average them.

It often records that I have burned over 2,000 calories per day, even when I haven't exercised much.

GPS is important. You don't need data all the time, but you will need it sometimes.

I woke up this morning and google fit said I took 244 steps. There's no way google fit is accurate, it's so stupid. You can't even see your steps as you take them like on Samsung. It stays the same number and updates mins after. Also, when a nother app sends info to google fit eg. Weight you can't even delete an entry if you decided to can't on the scale more than once. It's just in the google fit app as 4 entries of the same thing even though you deleted the duplicate out the smart app google fit pulled the weight from

I don't think either are acurate. I have Google Fit, Samsung Health and Oura ring. Google fit 3906 steps Samsung health 4549 steps and Oura 6822 steps. Know I know from having a fitbit a while ago and just a normal pedometer that i average 7000 steps a day. i would say oura is just about acurate.

Google first is not accurate. The activity result changes every now and then.

Google fit is only accurate if in pants pocket. Anywhere else, not accurate. Not accurate holding in hand. Not accurate on a treadmill. Google fit gave me 10 points for 8800 steps one day. On another day 4400 steps gets 19 points. Google fit sucks big time and is not accurate. Worthless app w fake stats. Waste of time Google fit sucks big time

For me, it works the same in the pants pocket and in hand. The reason you get different points for different steps is your walking speed.
