Also, whereas Penny likes precious gems, and everyone is all about those rare and pricey prismatic shards, all Haley wants are things that make her think of summer like sunflowers and coconuts. Even daffodils are bright, sunny yellow. That and girlie things like pink cake. She loves sun and surf and things that are pretty, and I think she just felt really misunderstood until you get close to her... the knight in shining farmer! (best line ever). She's mean to push people away. When you look at it, she's shy. She doesn't socialize at the saloon, but hangs out by the community center fountain alone or takes photos in the forest alone. I think she feels really unseen and judged for liking simple, pretty things, and the best defense is a good offense. I think Haley 's hard shell protects a softness inside that you allow her to reveal. Instead of seeing just a dumb blonde, you get to know her as a playful, creative, caring person and she blossoms because of it.

Besides the heart events, the gradual change in her attitude towards you when you talk to her really emphasises her growth, too. She'll talk in the early stages about throwing out old clothes to make space in her wardrobe for the latest fashions, but, later on, she'll instead consider donating them to the needy and remark that going shopping doesn't hold the appeal that it used to anymore. She basically matures in real-time.

The thing I notice about Haley is that even in the 4-Heart event, when you open the jar a little heart pops up. Then she gives you a hug and is BLUSHING when you find it. Girlie fell first but the farmer falls harder ✋🏼✋🏼

As an autistic person Haley is my favourite because if you view everything through an autistic lens, all of her behaviour makes so much sense. She is very literal and direct - She sees dirt on you, she says you're dirty. She doesnt like your fashion sense, and because she sees her opinion as objectively correct, that must mean you are ugly. She's kinda socially awkward and doesnt really know how to speak to people, hence the "or whatever". She is also never seen talking to any of the NPCs besides her sister and Alex. She doesn't go to the saloon and she spends time at home or by herself taking photos or by the community centre. She isn't lonely and is quite content with that routine. She doesnt remember your name bc she has no attachment to you so it doesn't make sense to know anything about you, until she needs a jar open and she realises you have value to her in that moment. Everything she says sounds back handed but when she says "you are stronger than you look" she just means that quite literally When she loses her bracelet she reacts very strongly and is so shook up by it she doesn't think to have a look around. She struggles with emotional regulation. She has a lot of passion for photography and shows a lot of curiosity towards things she is interested in. She starts becoming interested in the farmer, so she decides she wants to learn about farming and take pictures of cows. She likes very simple things that bring her joy. Yellow flowers, pink cake. She doesn't like things based on their value. Autistic people have a very strong sense of empathy and social justice. Despite not having any relationship with Penny or the kids, the mention that they can't afford books really lights something in her that wants fairness for everyone and she very creatively is able to use her interests (cake) to raise money for something she cares about even though its seemingly so random. Anyway I dont think concernedape intended it this way but I like to intepret Haley as autistic.

I also feel like Haley’s first heart event fits the “strong sense of justice” and I relate to it a lot. She remembers exactly who cleaned the cushions last, and who’s turn it is, so when that gets thrown out of whack, she freaks out. ‘It’s not fair, they never agreed on her doing it two weeks in a row, this is stressful’ Her agreeing to do it every week to not argue about it feels very relatable too. A sense of justice so strong that giving yourself more work to not have to argue as much feels way better. Great first heart scene, amazing. (I relate to Haley a lot, I stay inside my room most of the day, I get very angry quickly, all that stuff. And I have to force myself to not romance her in every save I make LOL)

I have never married Haley so i’ve never seen the charity event, that’s so sweet, i was def anti Haley on the first meeting but i still gave her birthday gifts and talked when we met in town so i still got to see her improve her attitude and learn to enjoy life, which was great

See the problem I have with Haley is a similar problem that I have with Lae'zel in Baldur's Gate 3 and it's all about the roleplay perspective. I never choose Haley (or Lae'zel) BECAUSE your first experiences with them are so negative. Because while I have to be a mediator for Haley at two hearts I'm simultaneously helping Maru with science, playing video games with Abigail, seeing Leah's artwork, watching Penny (abrasively) help the elderly. Sure Haley gets character development and that's great, but my character isn't an all knowing wizard who can see who she'll become so she starts at a disadvantage. But of course now that I've mentioned BG3 I almost want to see what you think of those romance options too because they all get a good share of character development.

I agree about the option in her 10 heart event in my second save where I married her I got to that and went on the wiki to make sure that that would be a good option because of the word try. It should’ve been either ask or just straight up kiss her. A better way to do that is maybe have Haley flirt with you before that something that makes it obvious she wants to kiss you or even something like her telling you about when she started to develop feelings for you and gave the option be lean in to kiss her.

I honestly think the 6 heart event is brillian quite honestly. First off it feels like it's setting you up to make the "Relax, I'll just buy you a new one!" choice. At this point in the story Haley has come across as rather shallow. Even if she was nice in the four heart event she didn't exactly disprove that. Maybe if you paid attention you might be noticing she isn't as shallow as you were lead to believe... But I certainly wasn't paying attention. So it's a very real possibility that the player does pick the "Relax, I'll just buy you a new one!" choice, heck I suspect ConcernedApe wanted you to, given you only lose 30 friendship points. Which I feel should be more, given what a rude your assumption was. It shows off how sentimental Haley is despite her brattiness. And like, her great-grandmothers bracelet? That bracelet has to be so out of style by now! For someone as fashion conscious as Haley that says a lot about her that she would even wear a bracelet that old and probably out of style.

I'm glad people can have different tastes and enjoy different parts. I won't begrudge people who might play Stardew for Speedruns or Skull Cavern trips, even though they're absolutely not in my wheelhouse 😅 same with romance options... I mean... I get it, really 😁 I can see why she is so beloved from an intellectual standpoint, but my heart doesn't want to ever understand. While I understand that within the confines of the game it's not really meant to work like that, but for me, if a character is mean to me, I don't want to have to summon up so much one-sided effort to bring about character change, if that makes sense? At least not in a romantic sense. I don't cut them out, or throw stones or anything, but they're dead as a romance option to me. I did romance her once, and it was sweet, and she has great spouse dialogue, but my heart wasn't in it. Now, MARU on the other hand?! She can GET IT. Any time, any place she wants to. Hella smart? Environmentally conscious? Rocking the STEM field, including robotics? Not to mention she's a nurse (including the outfit)?! Showing interest in you and what you do, and including you in her doings? YES PLEASE.
