I'm half-convinced the only reason Penny's 10-heart event is in the bathhouse is because ConcernedApe suddenly remembered he made a bathhouse but made no cutscenes for it, and he felt like it would be a wasted location. Although I think one of Alex's cutscenes would make sense there because he actually works out there during winter on a regular basis, so it'd make more sense for him to think to invite someone.

I always took it as Penny getting real serious about you. She's so prim and modest most times, but she's really in love with you as shown by how she cries if you reject her. So she's willing to be vulnerable and open with you in the bath house, alone, at night. It's a very intimate setting.

10:00 Counter point: Children have a way of making innocent interactions sound horrible due to their lack of understanding semantics. She could have just been genuinely shocked about how bad that sounded and panicked. I've been on the receiving end of that situation once and no cheating was involved. Just nosy young siblings doing what they do best by being annoying at the worst of times. Penny's story involves a lot of topics and themes that are specific to either upbringing or personal preference which makes her hard to empathize with to a large audience.

Maybe she was shocked by what Vincent said because he made an Innocent act to get some privacy look horrible and she told him not to gossip because that was what they we're trying to avoid by claiming that tree she was shocked that the effort of them trying to get some privacy made it even worse. I hope I was understood because english is not my native language. And if you may ask why would she want some privacy with sam I'll tell you.. I dunno, I never had a problem with this. I feel like it's just kind of realistic, people don't like when you call them out for bad behavior, and even if they know you're right they can still be embarrassed and defensive in the moment. The fact of the matter is that if you pander to people (particularly near-strangers like a 2-heart), they tend to like that better than being publicly real with them. If it felt like a permanent detraction that would be one thing, but for me, I have no problem taking the option, losing the points, and then getting to know her better anyway

For the 6 heart, you don't have to lie. Take the heart loss. If you tell someone that the thing they were so proud of doing is bad, they're going to get upset. But they will get over it in time. Helping a disabled person without asking is not the textbook correct thing to do, but it is hardly a monstrous mistake. I've offered help to a struggling stranger before only for them to collapse after they declined and I walked away, my conscience wasn't clear.

Honestly, just came here to say that we all have our preferences and it's fine. I feel like all the marriage candidates are written in such a way that they're penciled in so you can build and project as much as you want with them. But I just wanted to say how bothered I am with people disliking characters for being "boring" and making them out to be the worst because of it. Not everyone has to be something unique or powerful or quirky to matter. And they don't need to be that way to be appreciated. Penny is simple and traditional for a reason because as much as there's magic and mayhem in Stardew, what makes it home is that it can be comfortably ordinary. Penny's simple dreams can match with some who just probably wants to chill in the valley. Also, her losing hearts with you because you say you don't like children is not that wild to me? I mean, I've had people I grew apart with IRL because we don't share the same principles and I just don't vibe with them anymore. It's probably like that.

So, as a physically disabled individual, I really don't agree with people getting upset at Penny over the 2 heart event. The fact of the matter is that this kind of situation is extremely polarizing for those people like George. You are pretty much just as likely to find someone who would get upset about it, as you are to find someone who would really appreciate the help. Yes, she crossed boundaries, but she was specifically going well out of her way to help someone, and that should really count for more positive points than her not thinking to ask should count for negatives. The fact of the matter is that if we treat disabled folks with kitt gloves and freak out because someone didn't help in exactly the right manner, than people are just going to stop offering help at all, because they don't wanna be the bad guy when they were just trying to help someone who genuinely seemed to need it. Like.... Look at it this way, if you were at the store shopping and were too short to reach something on a high shelf, would you be upset if another customer saw this and grabbed it down for you? No, of course not. Most reasonable people would be fine with that. But because George is disabled, people get all upset about a genuinely harmless action, that would have gone over seemlessly if he were able bodied. Furthermore, through the entire encounter, she was really respectful and polite. She never once said anything to indicate she viewed him in any negative capacity, and was never once dismissive. It's likely the only reason George even gets upset at all is strictly because of how sensitive he is about his condition. Several other events make it really clear that he views himself as a broken burden weighing down the lives of everyone he cares about. He didn't get upset because Penny did something wrong; he got upset because of his own negative self view. That's literally why he changes his tune later in the interaction. He was never mad at Penny; he was mad at HIMSELF for needing help in the first place, and openly acknowledges she did something good and kind for him. George is the disabled one here. If he, by his own admission, says she did nothing wrong, then we should view it the same way. I have a counter argument for every other thing you brought up here, but this was the biggest thing I wanted to comment about. I'd go into the rest, but don't want this to be miles long.
@tadferd434011 ай бұрын
The reason I don't like the event isn't that she pushed him and then helped him without asking. Some people don't know that it violates bodily autonomy or that they should politely ask someone if they need help. People make mistakes, and can learn from them. My issue with the event is the bad options the player is forced to use and how they affect the event and the mechanical results for the game. The best option is a polite explanation of how Penny should ask first. Turn the event into a learning experience and help resolve the situation between Penny a George. Instead, the best choice is to chastise George for being angry, which to be fair he should apologize after Penny does, and you explained why he acted the way he does. Our only option to point out how rude Penny is is also very rude and just makes the situation worse. The event needs better writing with regard to player options and outcomes.

In China and India, it's common to avoid helping people we see in need because of fear of retribution. Rather they let them get hurt or bleed out. When I did conscription (I'm in Asia btw) I had a stint in my local police division HR. I had trouble getting conscripted officers to renew their First Aid certificates near the end of their conscription period. The common reason I got was that if they are civilian (ie no longer a police), they don't want to do CPR or help anyone injured and end up hurting them more or breaking bones etc. It was crazy because we have Good Samaritan laws in place to protect them, especially with a first aid license The people who are happy to help are almost always westerners. It's a very American thing to stop in middle of the road and offer assistance to someone having trouble with their cars, or even when outside walking. ----- So as an Asian it makes me puzzled why so many feel like it's straight up "rude" and not "good intention, unfortunate execution" I feel like her act is very courageous and selfless, despite having room for improvement Honestly if I was in a new town and I see neighbours roaming around ignoring the old gramp trying to reach the letterbox, my first impression will be, fk this people - lacking morals. At least she went forth. Mistakes made. But she learnt. He snaps. He apologises. She apologises. ---- I'm just very very confused at how people get very mad. People keep citing the "she violated him" in isolation but ignore the intent and context. Then is it not wrong to slay the shadow people knowing they are krobus's kin?

I genuinely cannot get over how she acted with George. A wheelchair is a part of a disabled persons body, it is an extension of them and its important for movement and autonomy. And then the cutscene ends, so in the context of the scene your farmer rebuffs her very rudely and walks away. Why *wouldn't* you lose 1500 friendship for being a jerk to her like that? Okay, I think I have a handle on Penny’s issues and I can summarize. Her biggest problem is: she’s fragile. She lacks confidence, needs you to lie to her or say pretty words to gain her favor, and openly shows distaste if you express opinions that don’t align with her values (when she asks if you want a family someday). She’s unable to cope with you having thoughts that are different from her own. It’s an invasion of the pretty reality she surrounds herself with, where she IS a good cook, where the things she does out of kindness are always correct (instead of well-meaning, but wrong, like with George), and where her love of kids is a moral imperative rather than an opinion. The thing is, living with an alcoholic mother, it makes sense that she closes herself off to the truth and only wants to see things through rose-colored glasses. It keeps her from having to see how ugly the reality of her life actually is. This is even evidenced by her living space- the trailer is a mess, the yard outside the trailer is littered with trash, but Penny’s room is this pretty, cozy space, tucked away from the rest of the house through the safety of a closed door. It’s a coping mechanism, and it makes sense for her character. So, basically, Penny has trauma and she’s in a bad home situation, which makes her fragile, which in turn makes her… kind of frustrating to date. If you can’t accept that you can be wrong, can be bad at things, etc, you aren’t ready to date someone, because there is a LOT of compromise in relationships. I’d even go as far as saying she’s used to being a victim, and is just playing the role she’s been given. It’s not really her fault, this is just what her life has been like forever- it’s what she’s used to, so it’s how she behaves. TL;DR the problem with dating Penny is you’re dating someone who isn’t ready for a relationship and it *really* shows. get this girl some therapy. thank you for coming to my TED talk

As someone who's been in a similar position as her, you're absolutely right. Penny is not in a mental state where she would bring anything healthy to a relationship- the girl desperately needs therapy, probably as much as Shane does (albeit for different reasons). That is, unfortunately, easier said than done while living with her mother. Therapy for domestic abuse while living with the person just... doesn't work. I wish we could help Penny move out without marrying her, and have her character develop in a healthy way before her 10-heart event. Then, she might genuinely have the potential to be an amazing girlfriend or spouse! And she is still a good person (as much as anyone is, anyway). As it stands... not so much....

“air of resignment” is such a good way to describe it. in actual literature, static characters are always necessary to the plot- the main characters always being the ones to change. so a lot of us enjoy more progression with our dateables- myself included! penny, as you said, doesn’t have that sense of progression. it’s like her problems are just left unsolved. she’s like byeeee pam gonna go live on a farm and make babies🤣
@shorewall Жыл бұрын
@@Lummi.a But that kinda does solve her problems. She can't change her mom, but she needs her own space. She wants to take care of others, but really, she wants a family of her own. Getting married is what she wants, and that's fine. But it isn't the most interesting or free thinking, for sure. Also, I think her heart events being so strict isn't that you can't tell her the truth, but that she knows what she is looking for. She doesn't want to just fool around. She wants to get down to business. I do think she is the kind of girl that appeals more to men. For me, Penny and Haley are my 1 and 2. My attraction to Haley started off completely shallow with her long blonde hair and figure, whereas Penny is easy to overlook. And while I was happy to see Haley change over time, Penny really got her hooks into me. At the end, I felt like Haley had the whole world at her feet, but I felt like I was Penny's world. :D

8:00 Given what's happened so far, I feel like I can kind of understand the storyline they're trying to go for. You're introduced to Penny who gets yelled at guy the grump after doing something as is meant to be nice. Helping someone who is struggling & even he admits he was being a jerk. Pam's mom yells at her for doing something nice such as cleaning up the place. 3rd event, Penny is trying something new & being a good person you do the polite thing & encourage her (especially if you're trying rizz her up) because while it's obviously bad the sweet thing to do is not to be rude & being blunt about it (though I will agree a constructive advice option would've worked better). A common mistake in video games is sometimes what you want to say a person is not what the dev team (not helped when the text doesn't match the dialogue line) if you're familar with Starwars ToR: you could pick something thinking it's playful banter only for it sound like an a-hole.

I get annoyed at the number of people that treat Penny's two-heart event as evidence that she's somehow irredeemably awful. She did something out of a genuine desire to help someone who she saw was having trouble, and it turned out she handled it wrong. Should she have known better? Probably, yeah, but she didn't know better and made a bad call. A person can screw up and not be a horrible person! People are like "You lose friendship points if you tell her she should have asked!" But it's an amount you gain back from talking with her, like, twice? In context, it looks like you lose friendship points 'cause she realizes you're right and she's embarrassed, and she relaxes when she realizes that you pointing out that she messed up doesn't mean you hate her. Also, Penny is far from the only character to have awkward moments in their heart events. I'm just saying that I don't see people hating on Haley because her two heart event is dragging you, still mostly a total stranger, into an argument between her and her sister.

Man. As someone with a physical disability, I always get so irritated by people without physical disabilities trying to weigh in on whether what penny did is okay or not. You don’t have that experience. If George, the character who actually has the disability says it’s fine, then that should be that. If you DO have a physical disability that hinders you in a similar way, that’s fair. But saying “you shouldn’t help a disabled person without asking” when you have no idea how those people actually view it feels so entitled.

The thing is that anyone can have that opinion, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone, because it's understandable that someone doesn't like children, idk because they're loud or just because you're impatient, maybe it's strange that somebody doesn't like children. It doesn't really matter as long as you don't do anything to the kids, and the farmer never does anything to the kids, so here's the thing. I don't like that Penny can't accept any opinion other than her own.

I wish to get a more detailed relationship table in game interactions, for example while playing the game i do not feel like i can see the change of behaviours in my bachelor's life enough. Seeing abby in caves with us, seeking some wild plants with leah, taking some photos with haley ( she can take our photo while i am struggling with fucking fishs), petting animals with shane, going to the city with max for music etc. Okey we can go to the cinema but this can be really boring after a while. Additionally, i really cannot feel their change in our relation except some of cutscenes, helping sebs for beating his smoking addiction like our affect in shane's life or giving some morale to the abby for her real hair, furthermore; talking about his real dad and more... While the heart events i cannot feel their actual emotional changes :( Note: I loved your real appearance lummi

See for the two heart event I always go with the "That was a nice thing you did, Penny." as a way to deescalate. Like clearly she wasn't trying to be rude so I pass the hint to George. As for the Sam thing here's how I interpret it. So you can only start dating someone once they reach 8 hearts you might not be planning on dating Penny as far as Penny is concerned you are just a good friend. It could be that she's into you and just waiting for those flowers that may or may not be coming. Now she has Vincent blurting out a potentially PG-13 encounter and she's worried that you're not going to like her anymore even though she's not dating Sam. Otherwise she's not tied down so if you want it better put a bouquet on it. XD Oh so for the bathhouse, well let's face it there's a lot of suggestive material in this kid friendly game. I always interpreted that you two running the bases so to speak. Kinda like hiding in the bushes with Abigail. Penny invited you to swim, at night, alone, while you are dating.She knew what she was doing and you knew what was going on when you went there which again makes the rejection all the more heartbreaking. This was her pulling out all the stops for you. I know you don't really hate Penny and she's fictional I feel the same way about Haley while still recognizing her growth in heart events. I just always feel so bad for the character and I swear if I'm not going for Abigail I end up with Penny. PS: I would like to see more character analysis. Respect for my fellow English Majors.

I think what bothers me the most about the two heart event is that yeah, everyone makes mistakes, everyone in real life has to learn and grow from those mistakes accordingly, ofc nobody is perfect however part of making mistakes is apologizing to the people that they may have affected and then changing your behavior and taking accountability for it, unlike Haley where you can kind of contribute to her being a better person and rub off on her, the fact that you have to “start over” again because penny loses hearts for you telling her what she did was wrong is such a bad look, like a genuine mistake is not to be heavily criticized IF it is addressed and implements a change in behavior, it feels like the only way to progress with penny is giving up your morals and becoming a yes man to everything she does because she can’t take criticism Edit: I just believe the proper thing to do in any situation is to ask consent before you help somebody with a disability in the way you’re planning on doing so

10 heart confusion bothers me too. It would be so much easier for the developer to change NPCs to just either flirt, blush in embarrassment, say thank you, or even push back for getting a bouquet because they hate flowers, than for all of them to say "Oh great, we're dating now" even though they all act pretty much the same except with one or two lines of romantic dialogue.

My personal theory on why Penny’s 10 heart event is in the bathhouse is due to the remoteness and serenity of the environment! She lives in a tiny trailer in the middle of town with her mother, and there are people everywhere she goes. She never really gets much time to destress in relative isolation, and the bathhouse is perfect for that. It’s the calmest environment as far away from people as possible! I just wish she went to the bathhouse more often to destress on a regular basis. Like once per month or something. Also, I used to HATEEE Penny because of her first heart event, but I’ve recently come around! I hate her first event still, but the fact that no matter what you say, GEORGE apologizes? That makes me think it’s not Penny’s fault that ConcernedApe didn’t capture the nuances of a stubborn old man in a wheelchair refusing to ask for help when he needs it (I am coping)

To me, and I may be bias because Penny is one of my favorites, but I see the 2 events that Lummi didn't like is she was just trying to help, could it have gone better, sure. And then when Vincent calls Penny out with what happened with her and Sam I look at it as more of embarrassment to Penny. I would think as you get further into the heart events the bachelor/bachelorettes tend to get close lo liking you more so with Vincent saying that she was embarrassed at that in front of your character, someone she likes. Those are my critiques to the scenes but as I've said, everyone can have different opinions and that's fine

How you feel about a character says a lot more about you. Just a window into your soul. Because the reasons you gave had layers and childhood stories to them. It's interesting. I grew up in an abusive home, took on a more mature role than my age, and while I actually really love no holds barred honesty, someone that went through all that gets a pass from me. It's not easy to open up when you've been told you're essentially nothing. It's easy to talk shit when you had a loving home, and talk all the basic talking points about honesty like Maru. I could see it, there's a reality where I folded. Everyone I trusted and loved treated me like trash. I can see myself escaping with books, being afraid of criticism, being closed off. I was lucky, I got mad and spiteful. I fought. Not every child does. So yea, I wanna protect people like Penny. It's almost like the Shane arc. The whole, "I can fix them" mentality.

I personally don't have or want children, and have been told this in real life many times. My response to that is usually either "well, so what" or "it's literally impossible that everyone will feel that way so that's a stupid and irrelevant argument." For complaining about how this would went out in a realistic scenario, you and everyone in the comment sure weight a lots on heart points. Story time: I once accidentally push my friend of a step and got him scrathed. I was so nervous I ran off without saying sorry first to find bandage, only to come back when he's already treated. He understands, and he said he wasn't angry, just a bit disappointed. We stopped hanging out much, I was too embarrassed yo look at him in the eyes, and we stopped interact like friend. It's like that with Penny 2-heart event, sometimes you tried to do better, but ended doing worse. In a realistic scenario, she doesn't hate you for correct her, she was embarrassed that she had to corrected. She has insecurities. I choose the option where she should have asked for consent, I don't even it lose heart points, it's the right things to do. And George understands that, he understands she was trying to help, but did it in a rude way, and after hearing her sorry, he decided to also apologize, as to help cleared away her remorse. That's chivalry. He just grumpy, inside he's a good man. I rather see that then seeing him yell at her in the middle of the town, which I have experienced in real life. It was so awful, the young girl who got yelled was in tear afterwards. Next, we have 8 event, which she loses lots of heart points only if you choose the 3rd option - you can't stand kids. I guess ConcernedApes could have added an option that you were busy with something else, and she will lose a tiny amount of heart. The statement of the 3rd option can come off as rude or hateful, but losing that much heart is a bit crazy I have to admit. Aside from that, the other options is all ok. Unlike Haley, whom is very straightforward with herself, Penny has insecurities; they are polar opposite, which made sense for your hatred against her Lummi. The reason while I write this long-*ss comment is because I'm the same as her, and it felt like I'm being insult. If you do read this comment, I would like to thank you for taking your time reading this. I hope to see more of your videos.
