Halo Season 2 is out on Paramount plus.. At least the first two episodes are. As we all know, Season 1 was fairly controversial. With promises of improvements, did they stick the landing? I would like to talk about it.

Sean Callery got fucked over with doing season 1’s music. The Halo music legal battle was still raging, so he had to avoid using Halo music as much as possible, while still making something that kinda sounded enough like Halo, but not _too_ much. And then he somehow had to find his own musical voice for the project in the middle of that. I wish we could’ve heard what he could’ve done if turned loose with full access to Halo’s themes.

In the past couple months he’s done Percy Jackson, the God of War DLC, and Halo in way too short a timespan for one person. Sparks & Shadows are credited for the former 2 in addition to him.

Personally, I'm still not a fan. It's better than season 1 sure but only on a technical level, and even that's a little generous. These episodes of season 2 simply moved the show from the F tier that season one was and into D tier, and that's only because season one exists.

Cryo sleep stops your aging. Via johnson being 75 in halo 2 its because they sleep most of the time in Cryo sleep. You know cause human slip space takes forever compared to covenant slip space.

Even with it Halsey should at least be in her late 40’s/early 50’s

I will say though, the key reason I think Makee is there is for budget reasons. Makee allows for a cheap and cost effective way for us to get the Covenant's representation and their perspective, without having to actually have a CGI model be rendered tlror every scene. It makes sense. I think, if they had an unlimited budget, Makee may not even be there, at all. But that's just my theory.

This is absolutely the reason Makee is there. The Covenant, the Sanghelli especially, are extremely expensive to animate because of their non-humanoid faces. Makee is a shortcut. Every second the camera is on her it saves the production money.

The cinematography and sets were the first thing I picked up on. In season 1, Soren's place looked like a crumby Disneyland attraction. Like I could imagine the seven dwarves singing while picking at the walls lmao. The lighting felt like an early 2000's sitcom. It's all much more cinematic in Season 2, and the stark contrast reminds me of Avengers compared to Age of Ultron. The first movie had many of the same issues Season 1 does whereas Ultron was much more cinematic and well lit like Season 2.

Can you make a video on the Exchange in MCC? It feels like the Exchange is broken or poorly thought out. I see nothing but ODST characters and Rhine skins in the rotation, and the featured items are the same poses and H2A weapon skins that have been featured for months. I don't think many of the timed challenge cosmetics have come into rotation at all and it's not exactly comforting knowing that many items are just vaulted because nobody knows how the exchange works at this point.

I think you nailed it describing why Armorless Chief was working better for me this time. I was a staunch believer that he should never have taken his helmet off in season one but I was watching the scene here where he's at that dinner table and it's awkward as fuck and I was thinking "this is good stuff and he couldn't have done it in the armor, touché." Not that that scene was exceptional or anything but it showed me that the armor would be a limiting factor to the character they want Chief to be in this show.

I hate master cheeks in season 1 but i love tanto in 13 hours. Its the same actor doing similar roles but it just works better when directed well written well and when the world around them is grounded in something consistent. Honestly just give it to Michael bay and itll be all i really want from a halo show.

Glad to hear they’re actively reworking most of the junk from season 1. I think I’m still a bit upset bc Paramount literally could’ve avoided having to write anything. They could have borrowed plots from the books or just the actual games. Gosh, they probably had the resources to buy the rights to the actual Halo movie script that was being developed by Peter Jackson and company. Halo as an IP just has so much potential, and I want to see something adapted from that universe that is a respectable piece of art with a unique vision, and not some CW quality storyline meant to pander to the lowest common denominator. There are so many amazingly good and compelling stories told in the literature that would make a real splash on screen (can we please talk about a Kilo-Five miniseries???). I definitely think there’s space for new stories, but at least tell something good if you’re not going to adapt something that was already good in its own right.

I actually really enjoyed the first episodes. If the show was the same as the classic story then we would already know what happens it takes the fun away. Season one I didn’t really like mainly because of how much humanity they put into chief, him having sex and taking his helmet off etc… and the weird alien girl. I actually liked the opening. It was spartans , fighting elites, scared marines, glassing planet, it actually felt like Halo for once. Then he took his helmet off in the pelican/condor lol I just sighed. The whole rebel/space pirate stuff crime nonsense and just Soren as a character is SO NOT Halo it needs to be removed, it feels like they're taking too many pages out of star wars book with their concept of dirty poor rebels and such. Cobalt team didn't feel like Spartan 2's they definitely felt like Spartan 4's. And the cortana blade runner scene with chief being lonely shit made me laugh. Second episode bored the shit out of me, i skipped the little asian chick in the bladerunner rebel world parts, and I'm really sick of EVERY single elite having active camo abilities and arbiter style looking armor. Not every damn elite is cookie cutter like that and it bothers me.

Really surprised the amount of smoke being blown up the shows ass here... Sure there's a fair amount of good ideas here and decent action scenes, etc... But this is still bottom of the barrel TV and absolutely unacceptable Halo content... Makee coming back almost made me cry I'm not even joking... After 2 episodes of it sucks but it's not physically painful yet like S1 then all of a sudden Mister Cheeks' side piece returns from the dead.... Pure emotional confusion and Frustration... I literally turned to my wife almost tearful and said "Look how they massacred my boy... AGAIN!"

Now that Season 2 is done, compare the endings of Season 1 and 2 and notice how much less budget they had for S2 and how S1's ending was actually decent we had people finally cheering for "lore-accurate chief". The expectation of a Season 2 is meant to carry forward the hype from Season 1, and Season 2 just does not deliver, we had a lame fight vs Arbiter (who they kill off at the end of Season 2...) and we have Last of Us zombies instead of full-on flood infection forms. The budget was less and it shows. I don't think it's going to get any better from here since they really do need the money for better production. You really notice this with the quality of costumes and props compared to Season 1 to Season 2, Season 1 almost had entirely original armor and gun props that were commonly praised by people while Season 2 replaces it with literal genuine IRL contemporary weapons with zero change to them to make them look not from the real world. It's jarring. The marine outfits too are essentially wearing airsoft gear with a marine helmet.

Season 1's intro music sounded more Star Trek than Star Trek's intro music! Regarding the costumes, I wonder how much of this is raiding the closet. Parts look borrowed from other shows like The 100, even the venue where the slave trade was taking place I'm sure I've seen that set somewhere before lol. But overall this has been a huge step forward for the franchise so credit where credit is due, well done.

Whoa a nuanced take about the Halo show? Hell yeah. I think the show's already going in a much better direction, and I am remarkably soft on season 1. Although I did leave episode 2 slightly disappointed. My main issue is that there are so many things that I think are interesting and are cool to have in the universe, but I don't want them to be presented to me as if they are *the most interesting parts of the universe* because they aren't. The most interesting parts of the universe are the stuff that are intrinsic to the story being pulled from the games, which should be the point and what I'm liking is the stuff that's using the games as a template and making it more character driven. I'd be interested to see if this season can be edited down into a feature with the b/c plots removed by the end of it and whether or not that would make it stronger - the film student in me almost wants to take a shot at it. Cause there were definitely parts in the first two episodes where I just tuned out, but the good stuff is good and genuinely well crafted. I like Pablo Schreiber, he's playing the master chief that's in line with the way I would have imagined him when he's not in his armour in the books, and I think we're seeing a version of his performance that has the potential to become the version of Chief we all love. I've never been opposed to the helmet coming off, I like seeing the actors get to perform and I like seeing silver team in their armour because that's when you know action is going to be happening and the showrunners have the potential to use that to their advantage and maybe even subvert us a little! I still think it’s bad overall like the 1st season, still hiding behind the whole “if you don’t like the helmet off then you don’t like our show” even though it’s a stupid mindset to have when plenty of other shows and movies have achieved this with little to a small amount of difficulty. That brazen disregard for something as essential as the Main Character having such an inaccuracy/misrepresentation of identity is a paradigm of what I believe this “new” team holds for the show. It may be new people but in the end the core is the same. Do better. Giving this praise will only lead to encouragement of more crappy Halo spinoffs/“adaptions” in the future. Just because they added the original music back bc the legal battle is over doesn’t mean this is now actually decent. The dialogue is ok in a few circumstances but overall is very odd. Sgt. Johnson is still nowhere to be seen. The fact that apparently all the Spartans have their emotion chips removed so they excuse to talk about goddamn ANIMAL DOCUMENTARIES??? Ackerson is prob like the only good character, absolutely brilliant demonstration of an ONI operative. Personally I think Chief should return to the short but effective conciseness that Chief is known for. I hope this gets better but I will not be watching further than these 1st 2 episodes. TLDR: I think people should avoid this show even more so than season 1 bc of basic criticisms that are just ignored in the second season. But to each their own.

The issue with using Halo Infinite Cortana models is that, if the showrunners f**k up up Cortana while using the Infinite model, it will negatively affect the respect the for the character with that cortana face. Like if some people are discussing about Infinite Cortana, and then another guy shows up and says that this cortana was ass in the show, I personally wouldn't like the Infinite version to be related to the show version because of different character writing. They can use the Infinite Cortana's as base for a new Cortana version in the show. Like how they did it with using THE WEAPON's body look for the show.

Your point about the costumes is on point. Everything feels like it's this weird 80's sci fi or cheap modern sci fi parody show. It almost seems like they sunk all the budget into the spartan costumes and left no room for anything else. Even the marines who are a staple look so janky in their armour that almost looks like it's too big for them. Yes Halo armour is generally bulky but for the most part it waas proportionate to the wearers silhouette, I think the colour correction in editing doesn't do it any favours either. Even the set designs, some of them looking like something out of an early 2000's sci fi show. It makes it really hard to be immersed in a show based on a franchise that once broke records when it seems so low budget.

I would argue that the scene at the AI brothel thing is important to save face via Canon. Where John's true love is Cortana and we are getting a glimpse of that with that scene.

The first episodes fight scene was so cool and when the music changed to horror I (for a moment) had the feeling I had when I first encountered the flood. And if they would have revealed the flood right then and there, I wouldn’t have been mad, Because it would have been kind of perfect (other than the timeline not matching) I mean the suspenseful music, the greenish fog, the marines being missing and the warthogs just sitting there abandoned.

I thought I might have heard a flood tease at the end of episode 1 (a monster older than us older than the light it's intelligent and knows us inside out and is waiting to meet us in the dark) that's kind of what she said. What dose that sound like to you? I'm betting we find out neer the end that the flood have been glassing planets to try and get rid of the flood but I'm probably completely wrong because that sound amazing and we ain't that lucky 😂

Great analysis, I especially like the comparison to the walking dead as far as interpersonal drama. I couldn’t put my finger on it but that vocalized the “feeling” I has during the first season in terms of an episode to episode basis of any dialogue and character interactions being so grating.

Would i prefer the show be an adaptation of a book or book series, or just of the games themselves? Yeah, but we're way past that point. Season 2 is a great halo inspired sci fi tv show with a couple faults. And i believe it is worth watching, 11/15 goose approval rating i hope those few things are cleaned up.

When I saw the marines my thought was that it was just like the late 2000s cinematic trailers. Still kinda crappy but in a way that is lovable and very distinctly Halo. I think the improvements to the look and feel are very significant.

It could be a weapon position setting on the PC version of MCC, or low FOV. I think consoles might have this setting too. Also it looks intentionally offset and zoomed in from the video editing for artistic flare. The crosshairs could also be set for the lower 1/3 like Halo 2 as opposed to being dead center of the screen.
