Listening to reviewers who read the books, that's what they indicated. When Ell first meets Darcy, she mentions being suspended for her hair length. This is Tao's way of protesting the hair length suspensions given to Ell. There's apparently also hypocrisy as Tao is not being suspended for his hair length.

I think the reason the ‘jocks’ in this show don’t look like the typical jocks in American shows is because they used actual teenagers. A 16 yr old, even a strong fit one doesn’t typically look like the 25 yr old men they usually cast in those roles.

What's hilarious is that Kit (Nicks actor) originally auditioned for the role of Charlie. And he was like..."yeah, I don't fit the description of the character at all but I'm going to do it anyway!" The thing is, for us gays old enough to be out of school, we _can’t_ be taken back to school days with fluttering hearts: we didn’t get to experience that. That’s why this show is so meaningful: it represents our hope for the future where LGBT+ kids _do_ get to experience puppy love in similar ways to their straight peers. And it shows LGBT+ kids that their feelings _aren’t_ wrong. When I was a kid, the only gays on the screen were either super-camp comic relief, or ended in tragedy. There weren’t any depictions of gay people in healthy relationships.

Regarding Tao. He’s very protective of Charlie (after Charlie was outed and constantly bullied last year) and insecure about losing his support group (especially after Elle transferred to the girl’s school after she came out as transgender). He grew out his hair to stand in solidarity with Elle when she began growing out her hair and transitioning. He’s probably one of my favorite characters in the show.

All of that is true except the hair thing. That is only a fan theory that has not been confirmed by Alice. Appearently, Alice said on tumblr that it was just to make the actor look more dorky. So the solidarity thing it just a theory.

It was not also cleared out but if I remember in the comics, Tao somehow was the reason why Charlie was consistently bullied because he unintentionally outed Charlie when someone overheard them talk about his sexuality. Hopefully it would be cleared up in the next 2 Seasons.🥹

I get Tao though. If you've ever had a friend who has been severely bullied or you are the brunt of the bullying, when you have that one friend that stands up for you and protects you, it can literally be them saving your life because you know that one person's got you. He's that role for Charlie with his dealing with bullies in the past and so he gets understandably hurt that someone he reps for is kind of ditching that tight nit circle and bond they formed and not telling him certain truths. It's not Charlie's fault for some of that, I mean relationships, especially new ones tend to do that...drift you away from your friends for a bit which Tau CLEARLY isn't used to, but in his heart I think Tao is that protective older brother through and through. They get annoying from time to time, but you know they will always support you and watch out for you.

im so sad that everyone hates tao! he is my favorite character. he has been standing up for charlie and protecting him from bullies and been loyal to him since they were 11 years old. he was with him during all of his bullying after coming out the year prior. he loves charlie so so much and wants to protect him at all costs. unfortunately because he doesnt know about nick and charlie, all tao sees is someone just like the ones that bullied charlie last year getting close with him and leading him on. he is genuinely worried for his friend. i just love tao so much!
