I used to be anti-curses and hexes. But then I was sexually assaulted by someone in my social group. I did everything I could think of, magically and otherwise, but I couldn't feel safe again. So I hexed the man who assaulted me to feel nauseated every time he heard or attempted to say my name. I've heard it worked ❤ And even if it didn't... honestly it felt GOOD and HEALING to deliver a consequence in response to someone responsible for a wrong. Especially one that had otherwise completely eluded justice.

I hit play so fast! People hex all the time and don't even realize it. Words are spoken to each other every day that could be considered a hex. Small little hexes like wishing someone a bad day. Gossiping and such. That being said I try to evaluate a situation pretty thoroughly before I will purposely hex.
@kelly-annmaddox2 ай бұрын
Good point. As a witch, I don't personally consider my terse words and gossiping to be 'hexes' because they don't have the level of intentionality behind them that they would need. Who knows what others are sending and how things are with them though? That's why I spend a good amount of focus on my shielding 🛡, seeing as I am online in full public view of a bunch of witches who now consider me to be an antisemite just because I'm against genocide. 🙄 Dizzy bitches.

My upstairs neighbour had a habit of verbally and physically abusing her 11yo daughter in a loud, distressing way and I persisted through the legal and police channels as much as I could to no avail. After reflecting on what reaction the neighbour brought up in me, I realised neighbours abusive boyfriend was the trigger for all the aggression I was hearing. I worked on processing and softening my attitude to my neighbour because being angry all the time was making my PTSD worse. I did then start magical working to send the boyfriends misery back to him. It took months but the neighbour stopped seeing him and things in her home are more peaceful. It would have been really easy to just hex her from my own frustration but I didn't want to make neighbours life worse (especially with her kid still under her roof and her kid bearing the brunt of it.)

I performed a hex once and it scared the shit out of me 😮. I’d contemplated hexing someone for something terrible that they did to my family 10 years ago and energetically I thought it would be cathartic. I journaled, consulted tarot and eventually performed the Hex of the Nine Patch. When I performed the hex I literally felt the negativity swirling around me like a Disney villain. I threw it out and felt immediately lighter and relieved. However, about 3 minutes later when I was gathering myself together a huge energy knocked me off of my feet to the floor, where I was pinned unable to speak or move for about 10 minutes. Then it released me. So…. I tried to protect myself from rebound but clearly failed and it really scared me

I am loving the room divider, just sumptuous imagery. Also as always, just looking so wonderful. Hexing is definitely one of those spiky topics people have feelings about. For a long time, I was resistant, partly because the first thing my mum said to me when I told her I was getting into witchcraft was "don't hex your sister", which had never crossed my mind. It was more, wow, how little do you think of me? I have come to see it a nuanced topic and if the time is right, it's something I will do. Like you, I often do it as a cathartic thing, release the feelings and may their shoes eat their socks for a week. Well, sometimes the hex is a bit more powerful, depending, but generally, small things.
@kelly-annmaddox2 ай бұрын
Wow, your mum's mind really went to the darkest possible place first, huh? 😅 Yeah it is a spikey subject for sure, and it's one that a lot of sispicious/uncomfortable non-witches think of first, even though it's really a last resort for many witches, if we even think of it at all! Thank you for your understanding about marginalized witches. I do realize from experience that ultimately, this work takes a lot of writing. Automatic writing has always been a strong practice I need to revisit. I do find that talking about hexing wrong people or too big, or even consequences I would never intend Come from the deep knowing that people who wrong us do not have, or have never had accountability for their own actions. Others who hurt themselves do not realize the life long affects this has on others because they didn’t know they were loved. Not to sidetrack but at some point, if a hex ends up with much bigger results than planned, I’d like to think that good intention still plays a role. We realize how powerful we are, and the responsibility that comes with that feels heavy at times when all we need is protection.

Sure! While we're at it, what about imposing prayers on unsuspecting people? Thoughts?
@kelly-annmaddox2 ай бұрын
Hmm, I can understand why people get annoyed when they find out they are being prayed for by people who want things for them that they don't want for themselves.. Like I know witches whose families pray for them to be Christian. But I actually feel like God is not this petty, silly thing that people THINK they are praying too, who would turn a witch's heart towards Christ or whatever. God is witchcraft. God is the whole thing. God is aware of the goodness of magick, but the humans that love God can be a bit puny of mind, unable to see that. Their prayers for witches are misguided expressions of care. The witch is likely to feel the care within the prayer without succumbing to the specifics of the prayer, so maybe it's just good intentions that they receive in the end.
@grreeeeee2 ай бұрын
If you are suspicious of prayers that people don't know about, aren't you kind of acknowledging that whatever God they pray to is real and answers those prayers? even if you don't believe that? lol basically if you don't think that particular God is real, why does it matter?
@kelly-annmaddox2 ай бұрын
@grreeeeee I'm not personally bothered at all. People pray for me all the time and they tell me. I had to ask my christian mother to stop praying for my salvation. But only after battling with many ailments for several years and not being able to heal no matter what modality I was using including Witchcraft. What I was told through divination and then affirmed through dream work was this energy given off from her to me was directly battling my own personal energy. In other words, her "wil" for my life was attempting to beat down my "own will" for my life. It left me exhausted without knowing why and then sick all the time. Once I asked for her to stop, some of the ailments went away. Same with the exhaustion. However, she is not honest about whether she still prays for me because I know she still does periodically. Now though, I have heavy protection in place to combat that. Just to clearify, it was not just her, but she had the church praying for me on a weekly basis. It was the equal to psychic attack.

@ I think the phrase means to be non-judgmental about both terms. When the process of healing is understood, i think it becomes clear that it’s not inherently positive (especially for the one who is healing) and so also when you understand curse or hexing, you realize that it’s not only negative by nature. Everything depends on context and the empowerment has to be recognized/respected.

Growing up Catholic and then my first introduction to the craft being Wicca I think I do have a little bit of that fear that I'll be taking on some punishment myself if I do so. I'd be flat out lying if I didn't admit I was afraid of that. However I'm also in your camp where I believe if I was going to utilize that it would have to be some injustice on a size that I truly felt needed that kind of thing. In the past I've been treated extremely poorly. Lots of trauma, disrespect, and some past abuse but I haven't been able to bring myself to that table just yet. I don't rule out the option though. I've come to a place where if I really felt I wanted to... I think that I could... but it wouldn't be on a basis of just hating a coworker for whatever reason. I feel emotionally capable of removing myself from tables that don't serve me and leaving it at that, but I do envy witches that have the balls to take those grievances into their own hands and settle the score. So my mind is open.

Thanks for this video. I think hexes often have a negative reputation because there is this stereotype about evil witches who hex (or curse) people, as it has been depicted in so many stories for centuries. When I am in a situation in which I consider a hex, first I try to analyse the situation. And then I ask myself, would a different kind of spell be more suitable? Like protecting myself and maybe others from the harm another person is doing. Or a banishing spell, or something else. If none of those fit, then I would think about a hex.

i don’t understand the ethics around hexing. i mean, when i first started, i didn’t want to hex because i thought feeling the need to hex meant that someone had power over my emotions, which i guess i still believe but only up to a point. sometimes people DO have power over us, just like you mentioned in regards to marginalized groups. as far as im concerned, if and when i hex, its more of a return to sender or binding type thing. that energy was never mine to begin with, im just giving it right back or keeping it the hell away from me 🤷🏻♀️ i absolutely do not need to be all love when someone is viciously trying to hurt me and sometimes i need assistance with a hex

Beyond backlash.... No one ever talks about the consequences of not doing anything. Why should someone have to spend their time forgiving someone who wronged them? (In my experience this also leads to self sabotage, self resentment, lost of confidence). That could include getting therapy, spiritual healing. Well why should the victim have to spend their time, their money on that?
@cosmicpolitan2 ай бұрын
What I'm about to say is DESCRIPTIVE not PRESCRIPTIVE, meaning, I will explain MY beliefs but I'm not telling anyone what to do, nor do I think I practice the "one and true right way." I personally don't hex or curse for 2 reasons: 1. I take the law of Free Will and CONSENT very seriously. Nobody can take away or override your Free Will, so even if I performed a hex/curse on someone, it wouldn't work anymore than if someone walked up to you and told you they wanted you to change your behavior. In my personally view, we all have Ultimate Sovereignty over our actions, so hexes and curses just don't make any sense, because you can just say "no" and ignore the suggestion. That being said, I totally see the psychological benefits of doing hexes and curses as a ritual to help oneself process emotions and feel better, like a representation of how you feel. In this view, I cannot assert my will over another without their explicit consent, no matter how hard I try, and vice versa. 2a. I simply don't want the karma that a hex or curse would create. Not karma from actually doing someone harm, but from my focus on negative emotions. In my view, the Universe will reply to my hexes with more situations to hex because it will see me focusing on hexing/cursing and say, "Great! You like to hex, so I'm going to send you more situations and people you feel you need to hex because obviously you like to spend your time doing that." 2b. In my experience, "what you resist, persists." 2c. In my experience, "where focus goes, energy flows." Which are all roundabout ways of saying that I tend to focus on how I want to feel, rather than focus on the things that I don't want in my life. I've yet to see our community address and reckon with consent in a serious way, which baffles me considering that many of us have suffered our consent being oppressed and suppressed under Patriarchal religious dogma, and I would be heartbroken to see it perpetuate amongst us.
@kelly-annmaddox2 ай бұрын
I take your points about consent, for sure.
@busybee3502 ай бұрын
The thing with consent in magical workings is that practitioners often look at things within their context. With that ethical standpoint, everything is relative. Meaning, if I got assulted by someone, that person violated me and didn't care for my consent, so I'm not going to give them the privilege they didn't give me. Or, if a person in power negatively affected hundreds of lives to the point that people are suffering, then that person doesn't get the privilege of consent before someone directs that same energy back to them. You get what I mean? That person in power had the option not to harm anybody in the first place, but they decided that their personal gain was more important than other people's wellbeing/consent. Since a lot of the times hexes and curses are used to bring justice when nothing else is able to bring it, the person who was wronged doesn't feel like they owe anything to the other person/entity. Note: I'm not trying to change your mind, just sharing this ethical standpoint, for the sake of healthy discussion! ♡

How would I find out and how would I undo that? I feel like hexing is acceptable for the things you mentioned in this video and especially if someone is marginalized and has no other way of getting justice for themselves because the courts wouldn't believe them....but some people hex and curse others just because they didn't get what they wanted and it's super shadowy and scary!

I did a hex with a friend in my early teens against a neighbor of my friend's because he threw a half-filled 2 liter soda bottle at me. He ended up getting kicked out of his house that day and tried to come live with me and my family but we turned him away. I was like 12-13. Then as I grew older, my sister ended up getting kicked out of the house and I myself got kicked out a couple of times. I always felt like it was because I did that hex and it came back to me. So I don't mess with hexes for that reason. I'm not a wiccan and don't believe the 3 fold law but I do believe what you send out is what you get back because of my story above. That being said...anytime I've been seriously hurt or wronged by people, they have always gotten their comeuppance. That makes me feel like I am divinely protected. Karma is a bitch.

Obviously i dont know the circumstances and its tiktok so it may have been BS, but i couldnt help thinking "would you have been willing to run them over yourself though?" Not condoning running people over! But i think it's interesting to consider: does this person/thing deserve this punishment so such that you'd do it mundanely if you could and take the consequences?

@@MichaelaBennison I think that's a very interesting take about hexing! Like, would you do it bold faced with your chest if given the opportunity, or are you hiding behind magick to mess with someone in a way you wouldn't dare otherwise? Thank you so much for this video! Im wondering if there are ways to tell if you have been maliciously hexed by someone? And what you can you do about it? I have had a nagging feeling for a while about a particular person, even had dreams. But because I have struggled with psychosis in the past I always just shrug it off as my own brain . Even though the feeling is persistent

In my view, hexing is neither inherently ethical nor unethical. The ethical aspect depends on the intent behind the hex and its potential consequences. The key criteria I use to decide whether I would cast a hex on someone-or advise another witch to do so-are these: If you could achieve the same effect in the material world without facing any consequences, would you still do it? Would you still believe it to be justified? For instance, in the movie The Craft, where they cast a hex causing a girl to lose all her hair: would they still feel justified in physically restraining her and shaving her head with a razor while she cried, assuming they wouldn't face punishment for it? If the answer is yes-if you're willing to cause the same harm in the material world and the only thing stopping you is the fear of legal consequences-then you likely have sufficient cause to proceed with the hex.

You mentioned at an event for your new book ( congratulations! ) that a family friend believes you were hung as a witch in a past life. Do you believe this is true? Do you believe in reincarnation?

Personally I don't really like the idea of hexing people, but I will severely hope karma gets around to someone swiftly, or try to do things to get someone away from me, or my loved ones, and as long as it doesn't hurt me or people I care about, the means isn't my problem 🤷

Personally, and just my own opinion of course, but I feel that if an offense committed is bad enough for me to want to hex someone, I'd rather look at protection, binding, banishing, return-to-sender, etc which i believe solves most problems ethically. And if the offense isnt bad enough to warrant any of that, it's not bad enough for a hex. But admittedly its about me and my conscience and I just dont see myself personally hexing in good conscience, BUT I qlso wont judge anyone else for feeling differently about it, its just not for me personally amonst the myriad of other options available.

I was this close to actually perform a prosecutory curse next Saturday. Was working on my protection, for everything and more. I never did one before because I though "limited energy I might as well do something good" but this was genuinely a level of unfairness that made me think and plan.

I saw a documentary where a tribal shaman explained that hexing someone is like throwing a stone. His son was ill at the time. He said his son was suffering because a hex aimed at himself hit his son instead.

I took a social psychology course once and it discussed the Bobo doll experiments and one of the research findings stuck with me: Before the Bobo doll experiments, people thought an effective way to release aggression was to “get it out of your system.” This isn’t true. Aggression begets aggression. Research has found that using a punching bag, ruminating, exercise, etc. increases anger and aggression. Doing nothing actually reduced aggression more than “blowing off steam.” This was super interesting to me and got me thinking about its implications for hexing. Is that aggressive energy something I want to nurture or is it something that will not serve me? I have done a hex once and it was for a situation where I felt like there was no justice or resolution. After the hex, energy was raised and I didn't have a way of knowing whether it landed so it contributed to that lack of resolution for me. I channeled that energy into emotional healing. Though the lack of justice still bothers me, the edges of resentment and aggression are less sharp. If i were to do a hex again, I would take this learning about resolution and the insights from the psychology course into consideration
