Follow up after watching the whole thing: It’s interesting to hear you talk about kids getting highlights for basketball the way you explain it bc I’m 4 years younger than you and it’s exactly how it was for me playing lacrosse. I only went D3 but I remember trying to get my parents to film and just struggling lol. And I think the only way to combat this mixtapeification is time. We’re gonna have people having kids now and for the past couple years that grew up during the mixtape era and know better than to let their kid get super inflated over a couple no-looks. But then again, some of these highlight companies are predatory af and try to sell to all sorts of people. Hopefully people are aware of that as well. Great vid man. Love the rambling sorta nature. My experience with AAU coaches was that they were completely useless lol...just basically had us running around out there relying on natural talent. I understand what Rivers is saying but I think this problem ultimately only effects a small amount of players. If you go to a public school or dont play for a powerhouse that wins every game by 40 you are going to have to learn to play basketball to an extent. And when you go to D1 you *really* have to learn. Even at schools like Kansas and Duke those 5 stars mostly have to learn "proper" basketball. There's a long list of kids with mixtapes who end up scoring 6 points per game in the big ten. The problem mostly only exists at the high school level where talent disparity is so big.

Completely agree about the youtube-ification of you highlights. For most of us outside of the US we either pay for a TV package with it bundled in, have to stay up late/wake up early, or worse still- watch the rubbish feed Amazon Prime has to offer. Every morning I wake up and my KZbin recommended is just NBA highlights, condensed down into a 2 minute reel. It's far more convenient, even if it doesn't help the game much

Awesome video! I especially agree with the end of the video, where you talk about how “highlight culture” and the problems with AAU seem to feed each other, and to the extent that highlight culture is a basketball problem, it may really be more of a symptom than a disease. It’s a very vague solution, but the only thing that I can come up with is that basketball at the AAU level just needs more people that are interested in helping guys reach their potential as basketball players rather than collecting money from parents and putting on tournaments and that’s it. I’m not really sure. I also agree that, as a medium, the basketball mixtape or highlight reel is not necessarily bad. It’s entertaining and fun for the kids. I do hate that lately it seems to encourage mean-spirited behavior and really just acting like an asshole, especially on tiktok, with guys just being dicks to random other dudes on court for the video. Also, I’m not sure if you mentioned his channel or I missed it, but hoopvision68 is a great basketball X’s and O’s channel.

It took me until I became an adult to realize that great fundamental basketball skills are what makes highlights. Instead of practicing core basketball skills, I'd practice the stuff you'd see on highlight films and my game was worse off because of it. What's the point in having a good looking fadeaway if your normal jumpshot sucks?

I think the issue is AAU basketball. None of this stuff teaches basketball but they are the way to the NBA. Raw talent, big hands, family w/ NBA connections, AAU squad etc get promoted to NBA. Learning to play "basketball" does not. Calipari, one and dones, straight from high schools kind of ruined that too since players used to learn how to play in college

Great breakdown of it from a basketball point of view. Conversely, the highlightification of hockey is something I think is needed to get more eyes on the NHL. Seeing Trevor Zegras do some wild stuff with the puck can pique some interest in it, maybe get some newer people to watch and get interested in it.

As a 33 year I remember a time where playing the paint was a big deal (spurs fan Timmy fan) now people view on the game has change to the outside and how learning to play the game people just want quick bits not real invested in the long run. I’ll look into these other chancel you mention about the breakdown of the game. Very informative video!

There’s several dudes I can think of who benefited from “highlight culture,” Ronaldo Segu, Collin Sexton, etc. I have issues with AAU but sometimes I feel like treat it carries thinly disguised hostility towards more “streetball” or improvisational forms of basketball. And the discourse around that gets especially get weird when people try to compare AAU to Europe’s Academy System.

You talk about film and highlights, but they're to different things. Film is a tool of the game that used to study information about a player or a team. Highlight mixtape is a bunch of cute dribbles and dunks that are purposely picked to create a facade of a skilled player, while he's no more than ball skill and bounce.

It's rich coming from Austin Rivers because he was pretty ass out the gate, he quite literally had to re-learn the game of basketball and adjust to a higher level, some guys are able to succeed at that adjustment in time to get another contract and some aren't due to various factors but I wouldn't blame it on "highlight culture"
