4:05 the thing about the "foreign bigs" is that in these other professional leagues, fundamentals, playmaking, and strategy are far more emphasized, in part because more physical defense is allowed. In many ways it is more stylistically enjoyable than the NBA, even if the top end talent is clearly not the same. That's part of the reason why Luka is so next-level, and to a lesser extent, why guys like Ricky Rubio became masterful playmakers.

Kinda like how guys who aren't even good enough for the G League are stars wherever they go when they play overseas. An average player overseas doesn't even compare to average players in the NBA. The talent is what seperates both levels. But you have guys like Luka and Jokic who excel in every aspect on the offensive end but get burned whoever they guard. Their offense makes up for it, and they are only some of the few. There's levels to the game

Uses cases like Luka and Jokic, can be easily countered with individuals like Marc Gasol, Rudy Gobert who are the opposite high skilled defenders but not first options on offense. There aren’t many players in general who play both ends of the court successfully at a level we’re they considered first options. One could even argue Luka and Jokic suffer defensively cuz they carry the offense burden of there teams. Luka has another first option guard so I’m curious to how his game will now develop.

There used to be a player in the NBA named World B. Free (aka Lloyd). Free would absolutely light the league up as he had a terrific nose for the basket and one of the best jumpers for that era. There was around a 10 year stretch where he averaged over 22ppg every season. But he wasn't at all well regarded by the NBA and his teams were often terrible. He was a gunner. Didnt Matter the situation, if Free got the ball, he was shooting it. Didnt matter if he was 1 on 1, or 1 on 4, he was taking that ball and trying to score no matter the situation. He never made teammates better. He never made teams better and he bounced all over the league with the very worst teams the league had to offer. That's who Jaylen Green reminds me of, World B Free.

Just a comment about the sengun. I saw in a comment where someone said that the reason the European players seem to be exceeding expectations and play better basketball is because of how they’re taught the game. In America, we have a “highlight culture” where from a young age we have the mixtapes of these kids doing the hesi crossover stepbacks that boost them to stardom and put them in the position in the draft. In Europe they have a culture that still promotes teaching their kids to play fundamental basketball.

The fact that the league looks negatively at players that are anything but one and done or sophomores entering the draft contributes to the lack of skill players entering the league from the states. Still, Jokic, Doncic and Giannis are exceptions, not the norm. I don’t see a surplus of Euro guards taking over the league.

Not a basketball fan primarily but I appreciate the game. So much of what you say translates to football (soccer). Kids played for the live of it back in the day, but because of social media and traditional media, people have seen it can lead to a lifestyle, so now everything is geared towards achieving that lifestyle and being "the star". Ehh I'd still say it's nowhere near to this level in football. Mainly because basketball has always been sport dominated by individuals. From Wilt, Bill Russell and Kareem, to Magic, Bird and Jordan and finally Kobe, LeBron and KD. Yes it used to be more team oriented but in a sport where there's only 5 players on each team a superstar or what would we call in football a world class player is worth way more. In fact, I've heard arguments that football has gone the other way at least in terms of the actual sport (putting aside the lifestyle and social media etc.), with way less superstars who would stand out in quality and more just really good players who fit systems that top coaches like Pep, Klopp, Ancelotti, etc. organise. If anything is ruining football is the greed of the owners and the executives who have sold our football and are slowly turning it into American sports with too high ticket prices, constant advertisement and unsatiable greed.

Been a Hornets fan since 1992 and I can tell you that the Hornets problems aren’t Lamelo. Lamelo’s problem is actually ownership and management. Miles Bridges was definitely a huge set back in the offseason but the coaching situation was equally as bad. Kenny Adkinson left after just a day of being announced as the head coach. They really should have opened up the wallet and went after D’Antoni. He may have never won a championship but he turned both Steve Nash and James Harden into super stars and brought in tons of money for the organization because the team was always on tv and selling out games. He could have done the same thing with Lamelo and the Hornets. I love my hornets but they are horribly mismanaged. We could get the number one pick and mess up because ownership/management doesn’t change its ways.

Those of us who watched closely enough know better...was he more that way the couple years Phil (& the triangle) was gone? Yes. But with its return, Kobe now got to experience running it from the MJ position, with plenty of post-work that he was almost never able to do with Shaq around. And truth be told, Kobe was better playing off the ball. Had he not starting incurring ALL the catastrophic injuries to his shooting hand/fingers & rt. shoulder, we would have seen Kobe at his most efficient. His FG% & 3 pt % both took a serious dip in '09-10, & with the exception of '12-13, those numbers were on a steady decline the rest of his career, with lower numbers than he'd ever posted BY FAR, esp. when he added the achilles/knee/rotator cuff injuries. I thought he should have retired after the achilles in '13. It would have been a great season to call it quits on: 27.3 pts, 5.6 reb, 6 ast, .463 FG%, singlehandedly dragged the dogging Lakers from on the verge of elimination from playoff contention to a freight train close to pull them into the 8th spot with the win on the night he did the achilles. Legendary stuff. But he just believed that he could hard-work his injuries into submission & win that 6th title...& posted some horrific numbers in t h e process of learning about his mortality. I honestly think if he HAD retired in 2013, he would be a more viable candidate for all-time top 5. I'm a Kobe guy & I have him at 6 or 7 depending on how I feel that day. 1) wilt, 2) MJ, 3) Kareem, 4tie) Jerry West & 4tie) LeBron, 6) Larry Bird, 7) Kobe, 8) Magic, 9) Hakeem Olajuwon,10tie) Timmy, &10tie) B. Kobe played off ball most of his career….. he had too to play in the triangle and be effective with Shaq. He only became the focal point after Phil left and during a stretch where his teammates were terrible. 2. LeBron hasn’t always been ball dominant the way he is now. His first two years in the league he did in fact play of the ball on designed pin downs, curls and back door lobs BUT he became more ball dominant as to not ignore his passing ability and actually brought in the era where everyone was looking for ball handling wings.

As a non casual nba fan, I would recommend you disregard the points made in this video. He manipulates stats in an attempt to prove his narrative. The problem with statistics such as bpm is role is not accounted for. Jalen green has a -2 bpm because he is a 2nd year guard( guards are always less efficient especially when young based on shots they shoot being further from the rim)and is the expected to fulfill the offensive role in Stephen Silas( the rockets coach) offense which was built for players like James harden and Luka. He also does not mention that great shooting guards such as Kobe Bryant and devin booker posted similar bpm in their 2nd year while also having a much smaller role. This is why I would never advise KZbin or social media as a source of information. They pick a subject and then find information to back it up instead of reasearching and then making a conclusion. They need to run their offense through Sengun, he’s shown flashes of Jokic and Sabonis. He has great footwork, traditional post play center, but he has great vision and passing. With actual coaching and discipline there’s no reason they aren’t on the same level as the thunder in terms of growth.

I saw an interview recently where Jalen Green was talking about how as a rookie he made other rookies do tasks for him like carrying his bags, and it really struck me as a sign that the Rockets didn’t have the culture to develop young players. Giving someone in their rookie season that much power over the locker room is a bad idea because it makes that guy feel like he’s the man, when no rookie is when they first start off. You should have to earn your way to that position. The Rockets need either a veteran presence in the locker room or a stronger coach to lay down the law.

Another thing about the Cavs. They get the importance of vets around the young players. We talked about the fundamentals in the Euro league.... it just so happens the Cavs have Ricky Rubio, Neto on the bench and Jose Calderon in the front office. We are making sure our young guys like Garland and Okoro learn the FUNDAMENTALS. Watching Ricky on the court is just magical and it's no surprise he mentored Donovan as well

As a Cavs fan, when CLE traded Kevin Porter, Jr to the Rockets, I was upset because he's such strong scorer. However, after sometime to really think about, I'm happy the team traded him. While he's a good scorer, he doesn't play defense and he had a really bad attitude in the locker room and off-the-court. It's not the kind of organization the Cavs are trying to create these days. The Cavs improved greatly, while the Rockets are sinking.

Ah yes.... Nothing more exciting than *checks notes * Bigs not moving the ball in or out of the post, burning the whole shot clock and jacking up a bad 12 footer. Like I get it but the NBA is more athletic and conceptually complex than it ever has been at the top end of the League, so naturally watching teams executing it badly is just as boring. It was the same in the 90s when most jumpers were just trash 18 footers. The defence was a bit better but that's about all you can lean on. The issue with this Houston team is that their overall scoring talent right now is essentially trash, outside of the 2 we are clowning on and there is only one guy you want getting more shots with Sengun. The culture is obviously trash but offensively, aside from the volume and efficiency of 3-ball attempts which is kind of egregious, who else do you want taking more shots? It's a bad team, and bad teams ain't busting their asses on the other end to make the play when they are already getting spanked.

The NBA is a league that suffers from the incompetence of those in charge of it. Not enough preemptive problem solving, not enough resolve. There are several pages the NBA ought to take out of Hockey's book. One, is its development infrastructure. But also the amount of minutes starters play in games, which in the NBA's case is excessive, and contributes to late season fatigue and injuries. Bottom line is, NBA officials should never even consider a decision that doesn't provide some benefit to the league. One recent example is the proposal of lowering the draft age eligibility. A move that would do nothing but hinder the league and its scouting department. What was the impetuous behind the idea? Because there are poor kids out there who need money, and just so happen to play Basketball. My case in point. A demonstration of NBA officials bending to the media, or the opinion of some sports Journalist. Something that as professionals in their field, they should never even give a second thought towards. Another idiotic, senseless move was evening out the lottery odds. Why do teams tank? Because they aren't good enough. So the NBA's solution was to make it even more difficult for them to aquire new young talent in the only way possible given the leagues cap restrictions. There other examples i could give that pertain to the rules of the game itself, and how they should be improved. Two are; the elimination of the 3 point line and a 30 second shot clock. The 3 line rewards shooting over athleticism, and the current shot clock often 'forces' plays, causing alot of errors and turnovers. Easy fixes that never get fixed.

I agree with almost everything you said. There are too many players today that focus too much on the highlights and too little on actually winning and that translates to the media and the fans. I get that in this era the public image matters al lot, but it feels insane that lots of people argue that players like Jalen Green, Kevin Porter Jr or Jordan Poole are better players that Tyrese Haliburton, Cj McCollum or Khris Middleton (I’m looking at you, Gilbert Arenas).

Cosign. Haliburton is a fringe MVP level player who has lifted a basic squad up out of nothing. CJ has proven that though he's not as flashy as Dame, he's more conducive to a winning culture. I think the the problem is the Rockets has so many young guys that they outnumber the seniority of the franchise and don't listen. Look at how all the vets talk about them, Wall tried to give them solid advice and you can tell it went in 1 ear and out the other. The coach is basically wasting potential he might have because they don't listen to him, yet he gets ALL the blame on why the team is performing the way it is. Using your example with Poole, I feel like Poole was the same way, but the Warriors knows how to build players right IF THEY WANT TO LISTEN!! Poole had those same tendencies on the Warriors where he's only looking out for himself and you can tell it was frustrating the vets. He still does sometimes from time to time but you can tell he actually LISTENED to the advice and criticism he got and now he's basically being set-up to take the keys away from Curry when he retires. All in all the young guys of the Rockets need to take a longgg hard class study about teamwork and discipline, because how it's looking now....the Rockets are gonna be the old Sacramento Kings that don't sniff a playoff spot for 16 consecutive seasons while also being a team NOBODY will want to come play for.

This season he had a lot of issues and you can tell he's still a young guy that needs to mature. As I got older and started working myself I realized that most NBA players are just doing their job. I had this realization mainly when i went from just training jiu jitsu to teaching as well. When something becomes a job or a responsibility it can lose it's fun because it's no longer a choice in a way. I don't blame them for prioritizing their finances over wins. Eapecially when time has shown that the league can love you for a day and cast you out the next

You are right, but winning doesn’t necessarily correlate with selling tickets. Teams will get players that produce output and with a powerful brand (social media clout) than a player who wants to win the NBA finals. The fans wants a championship, but owners want consistent ticket sales.

i think it might have something to do with where the player is from, i’m from europe and here it’s still just people playing basketball for fun and the ones that are really good pursuing a high level which would explain all the young european stars that aren’t covered compared to the american kids growing up trying to make mix tapes

What Green and Porter could use is some willingness to be taught and taught by some hard nosed veterans over the summer. Doesn't need to be someone specific just somebody to bring them down to earth and with relatability when it comes to being stubborn and arrogant.

I agree with everything you said about Houston. However the Lamelo stuff was iffy. I agree he makes a lot of mistakes, shot selection, gambling on defense, couple other things too. However his team is constructed horribly, worse than the rockets. A lot of issues with that team is nowhere near his fault. Plumlee is his starting center, I feel that says enough.

He's a good player, and his team is bad yes, but the winning wasn't the topic, it's the focus on improvement that's being questioned. He hasn't seemingly improved in any areas by a marked amount since entering the league, and that is fair enough to point out. All those things you mentioned should be getting scrubbed out of his game but don't really seem to be EDIT: Like take Luka for example, and I know generational talent so not fair but just roll with me. Since coming into the league he was already pretty polished, but even still he managed to develop a lethal go-to stepback move, a post game, better awarness in passing lanes on D so he's grabbing more steals, and his overall court awarness seems to have exploded this year to where he's now throwing crazy no looks while still lowering or keeping in line w/ his TOs. I mean shoot, even improving his body, throwing down posters which is a far cry from the rim grazers he was getting his rookie year. That's what people think of development of these high picks and it's just dissapointing when some guys just keep going with what's worked for them so far.

Damn. This is a GREAT video. There are so many teams wasting their young talent by not surrounding these guys with the right vets and coaching them to play NBA basketball. Not this travel AAU stuff that is tied to lazy coaching of entitled young players. You can't develop if the coach just allows you to play streetball. I hope those dudes in Houston get right cause they are talented AF but Coach Silas looks like he's coaching with his hands tied and allowing these guys to ruin themselves.

Yup, as a kid I played ball about 8 hours a day, almost all of which was just hooping at the playground with other kids. I played in the UK national league and we only practiced 3 times a week, played 1 game a week on a saturday or sunday. Now, the kids play organised ball (mostly practice sessions) every single day and they barely ever just play for the love of playing.
