Is Historical Total War Back? Total War Rome Remastered!

With Total War Rome Remastered announced three days ago is historical total war officially back? This video is just some quick thoughts from the news and I know its a bit late, but I loved Rome one and I'm looking forward to this remaster, perhaps I'm a bit optimistic for the future. Anyways enjoy!

In my opinion, the problem isn't a lack of new historical TW games, because Thornes of Britannia and Three Kingdoms are historical. The problem is a lack of new TW games with good and at least somewhat realistic and immersive mechanics and features. CA got too lazy with all the slow wet noodle-type arrows and bolts, op single entity units, bad unit collision, bad AI, lack of proper line battles, etc.

Yes exactly, I completely agree, that’s why there needs to be a new historical title that is of the quality of Shogun 2, Medieval 2, and Rome 1 (those have their issues to some degree), but yeah AI needs tons of improvement and the battles along with a return to some of the older mechanics would be best as you mentioned

Medieval 3 is what I'm personally hoping for. Would love if they also dabbled in the early wars of The Reformation.

Yes 30 years war please. And this is coming from a main Warhammer fan. It also won't be too far off from the siege of Vienna as well.

Yea man, we need more games like the old games. Not that type of games that each units have health and some troops took 10 millenium to kill even though you have the highest tier troop

The "super generals" are annoying as shit. 1 man shouldn't be able to slaughter an entire unit of 200 or so troops. Even when they're routing you have to divert a shit load of troops just to pin them down and then wait like 5 minutes just to kill them off. I miss when the games were actually focused on the troops and the tactics, rather than stacking characters with a million stupid abilities into an army.

I remember how I got into Total War and strategy as a whole, It was the er Third Age mod for Medieval 2 with the specific video from HeirofCarthage where he was playing as the Dwarves defending a mountain funny how just a single video can shape an entire childhood in the greatest way

at least in my opinion i would love if they do an Empire 2. an i agree they could expand on what they did in fall of the samurai for that. However personally i would like too see some literal Pike & shoot set during the 15th too 16th century. Mainly for CA too test *"the waters"* on a mix between Medieval to Empire. That way CA can build-up on Empire 2, and have the map build up on the Americas and part of west Africa, and Asia as well making improvements for a much bigger map.

Swedish invasion of Russia A total war game really centered on the Mongol invasion Indian Reunification LoTR total war Boxer wars total war??? All good options honestly, I’d love a pike and shot total war from like 1410 Battle of Grunwald to like 1638 Peace of Westphalia. Also yeah focusing on the Mongols after Genghis with the Ilkhanate, Golden Horde, and Yuan Empires would be dope.

Not gonna lie, although I like warhammer series, I am HYPED on Rome Remastered and the historical series revival. The thing I like the most is a bigger moddability. We can have mods on so many different topics, historical or not. One thing I don't really get is whether hard-coded limits will be the same as in the original (for example 21 factions max). Overall I have a good feeling about the near future of total war series. Still waiting for the lord of the rings total war tho

OK here are my new historical games: Mezoamerica Total War. You're Montezuma, just chillin', and Cortez shows up. Hyksos Total War. Invade Egypt, or defend Egypt. Stonehenge Total War. You have to fight off the primitive tribes while you build Stonehenge. Santa Total War. War at the North Pole with elves and polar bears against the invading Chinese who want to shut down your toy factories.

I dont think Total War being bad right know is because it isnt historical. I think its more about gameplay and mecanics. While Warhammer is a fantasy centered about generals soloing army, the mecanics itself was bad for the gameplay, and also removing the possibility for army to moove without general is shit. These kind of little change that make the game an horror to play. That and army fighting for too long. I love Rome 1 super fast battle. Imagine a LOTR Total War, with for base the mecanics of your favorite Historical Total War battle system (for me its Rome 1), settlement management of Rome/Medieval 2, and specialist building and diplomacy of Shogun 2.

I am not looking forward to any future TW games because I am convinced they will be worse than the old ones at their core; CA has recently been improving it's "historical" titles 3K and Troy to a point where it's not an absolute dogshit experience to fight a battle, but at the end of the day I don't think we are ever going to see CA go "back to it's roots" what with all the DLC money and the low effort required in replacing meaningful combat formations with stat bonusses and ticking "all ranks fire" in the CK for every ranged unit. Advancements have been made; the movement controls have been updated, which is commendable. Troy and 3K actually do have interesting changes to the campaign part (I like the multiple resources, and 3k seems to have a bit better diplomacy) but on the other hand I don't see CA releasing a TW game with an elaborate pre-battle speech system, well-designed unit formations or enough balance to where the AI can handle it; I even think single entity lords are something we'll limely never be rid of anymore. As for Rome Remastered, I rhink it might be a fluke; it's made by a "third party" dev that's responsible for making RTW ports to things beyond the Windows PC; I got no clue how this is supposed to make current CA any more capable of making a strategy game that's deeper than a puddle or how this will turn SEGA into less of an insultingly greedy publisher. Even in the absolute best case scenario where this game is a giant hit, I don't see anything positive coming out of this beyond maybe a release of Empire: Total War that works. I hope to be proven wrong, though.

i hope it isn't a shameless cash grab like usual. from what i have seen it is essentially a mobile port with updated graphics, and is serving as a "fix" for the steam 1.51 version. i am also told 1.5 works fine, and yet they are charging for this remaster. not a good look for ca, but we'll see. i think everyone is hoping for a full new game on par with shogun 2 or some earlier titles, but it doesn't seem like they're willing to put in the work

Yeah like I said I think I’m being a bit too optimistic, I mean my steam version works alright, but I definitely hope there’s like a multiplayer campaign added and that the multiplayer is more active. I mean I don’t expect them to remaster the other titles, it would be nice but yeah there’s some doubt for sure.

@@TripleZHacker i pretty much to this day play exclusively s2 multiplayer as far as shogun 2 is concerned, and i really hope they get back to something as fleshed out as that. like you said we'll have to see how it turns out, definitely looking forward to possible multiplayer boom as well

Well... TW Three Kingdoms in records mode is far more "historical accurate" than Rome 1 with headthrower units; unified Germany in 3 century bc; bronze age Egypt, divided Rome state

That’s true, Rome 1 is far from historically accurate but the gameplay is superbe and I think a lot of fans would prefer better gameplay over historical accuracy. Rome 1 isn’t perfect it’s got pathfinding problems and balancing stuff. I’ve never played three kingdoms myself, but I know Cav spam is the only way to win on harder difficulties and again you got single entity units that can fight a hundred people in combat. There’s aspects I like that are in that game though, especially with multiple start dates, but still it’s got issues.

@@TripleZHacker I do not want to dishonor Rome 1, it was my first TW game, my point was about Historical Total War; Three Kingdoms is still "live" game. and it is historical in every sense. The events, characters or units are historical, I would compare the plot of 3K to Imperator Augustus campaign in R2. The mentioned single entity units - kung fu heroes with superpowers are only in "Romance mode" , honestly, I really do not like them, but there is classic "records mode" (the battles are similar to Attila) - I play 3K only that way Anyway I would call Rome remaster as return of classic Total War (not historical)

@@lukaskovac6778 Ah I see what you mean that’s a fair point, I think I meant return to historical total war in the sense that historical total war is back on par with fantasy in popularity and in the developers agenda. I haven’t played 3K honestly but yes I do remember they have the different modes, which again isn’t really a bad feature and something they could use more in future games for sure. Totally get what you mean though, it is a bit clickbaity of a title xD

@@TripleZHacker I would say this more "complicated" topic :D only the Warhammer trilogy is real fantasy, and "pure" WH fans do not care about 3K and "pure" 3K fans do not care about WH; Lets be clear with the 3K - That is game, which is directly targeting Chinese and East Asian market, there are plenty of movies, books, tv shows, mangas, video games set in 3K lore, it is extremely popular setting in east asia, I bought 3K in winter sale on discount, and I consider it (in records mode of course) as a great "historical" TW game, but I admit - it is hard for me to orientate in Chinese environment with character and cities names :D Anyway, I think, after Warhammer trilogy, the developers will make "historical" game set in good old Europe, I hope for "pike and shot" era (16th & 17th century) With the Rome remaster - I am interesting, if developers would "revive" old mechanics like using navies for transport armies (how was it before Rome2) or province with single city (again pre-Rome2) in future games

@@lukaskovac6778 Good ponts and you’re right it’s complicated. From the gameplay I’ve seen they have revived the older mechanics of navies transporting armies. And I hope you’re right about that total war after the warhammer trilogy, that would be sweet.
