I’ve been hauling cars for 10 years . I only drive for myself and the issues I see are the company’s leasing on drivers that get tickets and accidents and then their insurance goes thru the roof. That’s why I just drive for myself. Sure the fuel is high but you can compensate for that if you have good business sense.

I save a lot of money doing maintenance and tires on my equipment myself but i havent hauled a freaking load in the past 6 weeks. Theres no money to be made out there right now, Unless you have a contract with a warehouse and the pay you enough to buy expensive fuel right now

@Izzyrodthegoddont do that brother I failed in car hauling,Im not saying you will fail too But i am just trying to warn you and save you a lot of headache. Let me tell you this,Car hauling business comes with a lot of liabilities, Shitty costumers who will file a claim on a vehicle that you delivered 9 months ago and that you got paid for (it happened to me) Some costumers do all they can to not pay you after youve hauled/delivered their car. One day this guu moving 3 cars from minessota to Arizona didnt pay me 2100 for the transportation of those cares. Even if it was a cheap ass price he still never paid me. You'll fine a lot of problems in this business brother. I'd rather reccomend you to get into dry vam or reefer,Flat bed would be the furthest I'd recommend you to go. Car hauling is hard Insurance is extremely expensive and you have a lot of risk that it could go up for any reason. Car hauling doesnt pay that much to be Worth all that struggle and problems Maybe if the prices were good I'd tell yoi go ahead and do it but it is not worth it at all. Be aware that I warned you so that if you ever try it and fail you will remember my words. I wish you the best from the bottom of my heart,Be smart. God bless you

The way hotshot is set up today is seeing how cheap brokers can get drivers to take LTL loads. Hotshot started with drilling rigs needing odd number of drilling mud pallets. And needing them fast. Or drill collars and bits. The cost in transportation was not relevant because a shut down rig was thousands of dollars an hour. It was old school and done on a handshake. This does not exist today in the oilfield. But there are still business that need stuff moved rapidly and would be willing to pay handsomely to the right company. But that still doesn't change the insurance. Look for 2023 rates to be even higher. Trucking is strangling itself.

I had a welding and fabrication shop for years. It focused on big trucks trailers. some hot shots ndt construction equipment. I had a guy come to me, and ask if I could put full air ride on his 40 ft trailer. He was going to get a contract hauling jet engines, but the trailer had to be air ride. Not air ride assist, full air ride. Anyways I designed a trailer and a suspension, and now they make them in the factory like that LOL

I had been watching rates staying the same or gradually declining while fuel was increasing, and debating what I was going to do. As I watched loadboards, I noticed this trend was a little different in the heavier loads. I decided to maximize my weight capacity while retaining the airride in hopes that I would be a little more "specialized" than the average hotshot. It seems promising, but I'll admit, rates are looking even worse right now and it's harder and harder to find good paying loads regardless. I wish I had more consistent work and that it was easier to find work, but the work I do take does pay better than the average loads at least.

Of all the great points you’ve made in regard to the freight industry, one aspect that I don’t recall you having ever touched on is STUPIDITY. I’ve been an owner operator for 2 years now and I couldn’t even begin to put a number on the amount of money that I’ve lost due to brokers/shippers/receivers screwing things up on a constant basis. If we as haulers had any measurable amount of recourse to deal with such situations it would be a different story, but the simple fact is that we don’t. Anyone who thinks that $150 is reasonable compensation for an entire day of downtime because some moron with a GED got the details wrong ( yea I’m talking to you TQL) obviously doesn’t have the bills to pay that the rest of us do. Zero consistency, zero accountability. I won’t be renewing my insurance for the coming year and I look forward to pursuing a career field where the overall success/failure is determined by my performance and not that of some voice on the phone that I’ll never even meet face to face.

With this in mind do you have any insight about direct customers/load boards for Hazmat? Also, because I live in the Northeast same question for you regarding cross the northern boarder into Canada? In long Truck Empty ~9,500 lbs GVWR 14,000 lbs Trailer Empty ~6,500 lbs GVWR 12,000 lbs Total Empty ~16,000 lbs GCWR 26,000 lbs So this gives us about ~10k empty for freight (depending on how much equipment, fuel, etc you take). The 2 downsides with dually trucks though 1 - Resale value is lower than single wheel trucks. Tons of data to support this but it also means dually trucks are cheaper to get into if you buy used. 2 - If you ever load the trailer wrong and get stopped for an inspection you will be placed OOS for operating a commercial vehicle with out a CDL. What do i mean by "loading the trailer wrong" Once loaded lets' say your truck weighs 12,000 pounds, and your trailer weighs 12,500 pounds. So your total weight is 24,500. However the officer at the time of inspection will take your truck GVWR 14,000 + your trailer weight 12,500 pounds gives you 26,500 which is over 26,000 pounds and will write up that violation

The insulated panels is a good idea. HOWEVER, here is an issue. It is generally one way freight. AND, there is NOT usually time to book a return load. Just a question for anyone who wants to answer; is the brokerage model for the freight business still make sense? I can understand before we became so connected in all things, you needed a broker to find, qualify, schedule and ultimately deal with carriers. Companies who just needed things moved didn't want to spend time to do all that brokers are tasked with doing. But now it seems that there could just be a site where get qualified to be on as a carrier, and companies could book straight thru there, no broker needed. Thoughts?

Not sure why a lot of big rig operators are complaining about hotshots bringing the freight prices down?? Maybe they are maybe they are not. BUT driving a big rig that gets an average of 5.6 MPG compared to a pickup truck 13-18 MPG. Commercial insurance IS cheaper for a pickup vs a semi. The list goes on and on im sure im missing some stuff. What im trying to say is don’t point fingers at the smaller guys who CAN take loads cheaper then a semi because they literally CAN. Operating expense between a hotshot and a semi is VERY different witch = to what they need per mile. Look I could be very wrong just my thinking but don’t be mad at one guy because he can afford to do it cheaper vs the other guy.

The true fix to HotShot is for Non CDL to go away, and i think that’s just around the corner. DOT is harassing the hell out of them and for good reason. How many times have you seen the question can i make money with a Tundra and a 20 foot bumper pull??? When that question or any thing like it, you know right off this guy has no clue about business, insurance or what freight should pay. People in cheap or illegal business models are taking cheap freight and killing the trucking business. The loophole that is currently being used for Non CDL was never for commerce, it was for bubba to pull his 5th wheel camper without a CDL. For Commerce will one day soon require a CDL as it should. CDL = Commercial (commerce) Drivers License. If you look at the numbers out there, there are far more non CDL guys screwing up. Overweight, running scale houses, not properly secured, no idea what combination or axel weight is or means, over length, window tent, unplugging the ELD and falsifying logs. The list goes on and on. Are there CDL guys hotshot and semi doing the same stuff? Sure but its far less common and there are far more of us. Let’s not even talk about cheating the tax man with no IFTA, another reason I think Non CDL is going away. Hate if you like, just my thoughts and hate wont change my thoughts. But if you feel the need to reply answer a question with your comments. What is the primary job of a driver?
@TowPiglet
@TowPiglet 2 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by "true fix to Hotshot"? By the way if you'd like to, fill out the contact form on my website and we can discuss on the phone.. If you mean rates are cheap right now because of non-cdl then I disagree If you mean the roads are more dangerous because of non-cdl I also disagree Trucking inherently attracts lower iq individuals because it's not a highly technical job. The laws are the laws, if it's so bad then the government should change them.
@offthefarmlogistics234
@offthefarmlogistics234 2 жыл бұрын
Alex, some of the smartest business men and women I know are truckers. And few of them will tell you “I am not a trucker, I am a businessman that happens to drive a truck” so lower IQ is generalization. As is Non CDL is a reason for cheaper freight on my part. But the fact is HotShot image and reputation is brought down by the vast numbers of people jumping in with no idea what it takes to run a business, secure a load, run legal, deal with brokers shipper or receivers and what price to run for. In your business model you were running what you felt was the most reliable equipment, there are lots of others running far less reliable equipment for way less cost. You were competing with them for rates! You are also hardcore promoting Non CDL, its part of your brand and I get it. Are rates down due to non CDL? To a degree yes. If it costs less to get into it costs less to run. Add to that a lot of the new people in the business have absolutely no idea what their operating costs are and they will trade cash flow for profit and never even know what they are doing to their business and ours. Obviously non CDL is not the only reason rates and image are down, but its a factor. There are people out there hotshot or semi making the same mistakes business wise killing rates as well, but again non CDL is a factor. If your on any of the facebook forums or go back and look at the questions asked in your KZbin Chanel and truly look at the questions asked by people with a truck and trailer ready to join us on the road. You will see it if you look. As to the roads being more dangerous because of non CDL… No not really, mostly (and a very generalized statement) new drivers. Having said that there are experienced drivers that should not be on the road as well. But as to violations at scale houses, yes I believe Non CDL gets far more hits. And far more likely to try and run outlaw. Does this mean I think its only Non CDL running outlaw? No but many and many that do it because they don’t know any better. I will fill out the contact on your website. I tried before to talk directly to you in the past, but I was filtered through your people. By the way your primary job as a driver is. TO KEEP ALL THOES AROUND YOU SAFE! over and above all else.
