Usually when companies like these say that they are less expensive than traditional grocery shopping, they go by the amount of food needed to make a portion of their recipes. So they'll say "Hey, our recipe costs 20$/points, and it would cost 40$ to get the same stuff at a grocery store!" without taking into account that you could make 3 times the quantity with good ol' groceries.

it is for the people that know they are not going to use the rest and it will go bad. also the preplanned recipes are important I know I have bought stuff from the grocery store and just let the food go bad in my fridge.

I think the "save $22+" thing is actually based upon the theory that on average, people lose $22+ worth of wasted groceries that expire, go unused, or go bad. So there philosophy is that with them, every ingredient is used and no money is wasted. At least this is the marketing that I got when i was trying a similar company. I liked the idea of it; not having to shop, not having to think of recipes, trying new foods, etc. But it was way out of my budget unfortunately.

Our family (parents + 5 yo + 10 yo) have tried hungry root and purple carrot. The kids preferred hungry root but it got old for the parents fairly quickly. Purple Carrot is much fancier, but more work -- and the 5 yo won't eat most of the meals. Chiming in as a long time vegan (since 1997!) who is also on KZbin -- albeit a much different niche.

I work at Kroger and the other day a customer came to the desk and asked if she could leave a review of a brand. She wrote a complaint about how she's disappointed in Kroger for carrying a vulgar brand called Bitchin' when its a "family friendly" store? She asked me if I had heard any other complaints, but I just told her we're aware of it and we all actually find it pretty funny.

I tried building a menu with hungry root, but my allergies really prevented me from having a lot of their stuff. Like I would basically just be getting all bean based meals with little variation in them. So I canceled and they sent a snippy email about me canceling before trying them, but it was a lot of money for a bunch of beans. 😅

Hm, to me the variety and convenience of the recipes and general meal planning for your week is worth something though, especially to people who don't regularly cook! I always think that these types of subscription programs work best for people who find themselves relying too heavily on Uber eats or other similar services, where costs can quickly get crazy high.

@Makai Threads there are people who don't have enough mental/physical energy to think about food or do the groceries and that the 400 bucks/month that they would overpay in a food subscription is worth, specially if you live by yourself and have a good source of income.

I subscribed for one month to help build a better habits. My son is extremely picky and I was struggling with dinner ideas he would eat. I was ordering out too often because I knew he would eat it. It was great for getting back into the habit of cooking and trying different things for him. The price was too high to do normally.

I tried them 2 years ago. The produce always went bad too quickly. Some of the sauces tasted weird. I actually had this service at the same time as Imperfect Foods and Walmart delivery, so I would cross-reference prices of everything, and, if I could get similar products from either of those to substitute, I would always save money. So Hungryroot is definitely comparatively pricey. (Imperfect Foods also costs more than other stores, and is lower quality “leftovers,” so.)

I had the same issue with imperfect and the price. They claim to be cheaper than the grocery store, but I found them to actually be slightly more expensive. I could imagine using them if I lived in a city with very high cost of living, but I only live in a city with moderately high cost of living so it doesn't work out. Especially if you're already buying produce based on sales and generally eating seasonally

Swayze, when you've prepared quinoa in the past, did you rinse it first? I had the problem before as well that I found quinoa real bitter and odd tasting but then I found out you're supposed to rinse it first. Did that and then it tasted delicious.

I love hungry root, but the reason it is a lifesaver for us is because we live way out in the country and I have a ton of allergies. I'm able to plan out all my food for the week, I know we are eating healthy, and I'm avoiding the allergens that are EVERYWHERE. We save a twenty minute drive into town, a two hour shopping trip, and another hour drive just to get to the nearest store that sells the non dairy stuff I can have. The only store near us is a dollar general. I was miserable before we got hungry root, and now we get excited about every box that comes and we customize it from the couch. We are slowly figuring out which meals last how long in the fridge and how many leftovers for next day lunch they provide. Currently trying a $180 box every other week, supplementing with what we grab in town like almond milk and tortillas. Three adults and a child here. When we would go to Walmart it was an easy $300 spent. My fiance also has a problem in the store where he will forget we already have something and continue to purchase more and more, and my child will scream for donuts and things so that's another problem we avoid.

I personally would like to know how hard it is to cancel. In my experience yellow fresh is like the hardest thing to cancel. You can’t on the app and I’ve had to call and they’re fairly rude and only try to convince you to keep carrying the subscription and when you say no they’re even ruder. That’s my major gripe with these subscription services is they’re hard to cancel

If you can find it in the US, Lindt has a new brand of chocolate that's vegan. I think it's called Lindt hello vegan chocolate or smth like that. They have three flavours (in Europe) that are popcorn (red packaging), cookies & cream (blue oackaging) and salted caramel (orange packaging). The chocolate itself is soooo creamy, reminds me a lot of quality Swiss chocolate. It's made from oat milk if I remember correctly. The only downside is having to pay 3,50 euros for 100 grams of product. But it's honestly worth it. The best vegan (milk) chocolate I've ever had. But honestly I'm getting pretty tired of vegan salted caramel products (esp. chocolate), lmao. Gimme more variety! Here in Finland Fazer has an 'oat choco' chocolate bar which is nice, but doesn't taste nearly as delicious as the Fazer blue, an actual (200g) milk chocolate bar. I'm just waiting for the day they make a vegan chocolate as creamy as Fazer blue ;_; (Sincerely, a Finn, who thinks his country's milk chocolate is the best on the world.)

I can confirm I have found the oatmilk Lindt chocolate in the US! It sounds like the packaging is little different (I have only found salted caramel, and the packaging was light blue) but it is currently my favorite. I think I paid about $4.50 for it, which is comparable with their other products.

As a single woman living alone and working a hybrid schedule in a big city, I personally find the quality of the food and the convenience to be worth it. If I was feeding more than myself or if I had the time to meal prep and go to the grocery store more often, I would consider cancelling my subscription.

I couldn’t justify paying that much a week for that much food. I understand the convenience factor but I have to go to the grocery store for other things anyway. I will say I get the Misfits produce box which is $30 (minimum) a box and they just got like snacks and a ton of other things so I like it even more now. But something like this just isn’t worth it for me. Good review!!

Y’all need to get good with avocados. If you buy unripe ones, they will usually ripen on the counter within 4 days. Once you can feel a bit of give when squeezing lightly (don’t shove your fingers into it), stick it in the fridge and it will be good for 3-4 days. Store leftovers with the seed in and covered in press-in-seal in an airtight container and it will be not-super-brown for the next day or two.

Trying a meal kit box for the first time in April because I had a coupon as well, I feel like the only benefits I would see paying full price is you’re not wasting anything. We often buy things and since there’s only two of us stuff goes bad so having it pre portioned may be helpful

I used to get stuff from Imperfect Produce. But I stopped because the grocery store was cheaper. It was nice to get mock meats and snacks I hadn't tried. But in the end it wasn't worth it. It also irritates me when you can't see their products without signing up. I signed up for Thrive just to see what they had. When I saw that it was all overpriced organic BS; I canceled. Maybe it's cheaper than organic from the grocery store. But I avoid organic when I can. I can't afford it and I see no benefit to organic. Looks like I won't bother with hungry root. The points thing is deceptive. It irritates me when companies do that.
