As a member of the hurricane community, I feel it's time to clear the air about the way we're constantly demonized. For centuries, we've been portrayed as forces of pure destruction, blamed for chaos, devastation, and the suffering of those in our path. But the truth is, I didn’t choose to be a hurricane, and neither did my family. The media has only made this worse. How often do you hear phrases like ‘taking aim at the coast’ or ‘smashing into Florida’ as if I’m some sort of vengeful entity with a personal vendetta? ‘On a path to destruction’-really? These words paint me like a villain in a disaster movie, but I’m not out here plotting my next move or picking targets. I move according to the atmospheric forces that created me, not out of some sinister desire to wreak havoc. People often forget that I’m a natural phenomenon, born out of the earth's own complex systems, just like thunderstorms or tornadoes. I didn’t design the infrastructures that can't handle my winds. I didn’t choose to travel across heavily populated areas. And while I understand that my power is sometimes overwhelming, it’s also misunderstood. When I move across the ocean, I’m a vital part of nature’s balancing act-bringing rain to dry lands, stirring ocean currents, and even helping regulate the planet’s temperature. But all anyone ever talks about is the destruction I leave behind. Hurricanes aren’t just about destruction; we’re a natural process, like rivers shaping canyons or volcanoes forming new land. It’s unfair to blame me or my fellow hurricanes for the damage. Instead of demonizing us, how about asking why people keep building in areas where they know we’ll eventually come? Why aren't there better systems in place to protect communities? Why aren't there stronger homes, better evacuation plans, and smarter urban development? My intention is never to harm, but to do what I was made to do. It’s time to stop making hurricanes the scapegoat. We aren’t villains; we’re part of this planet, just like you. Signed, Hurricane Milton A Force of Nature, Not a Monster

Their measurement for storm surge is incorrect. 12 foot storm surge isn’t measured from the street, it is measured from the average surface level of the gulf/ocean.
@johnklaus91113 сағат бұрын
If this weren't Florida, you would be correct, but most of the buildings are at or below sea level.... So, once things get over the sea walls, the flooding really starts in earnest. This is why houses well away from the coast in that area are still required to be on stilts. Didn't you ever wonder why that was the case? Oops. Now, in mass, you would be correct as there are regulations about building below sea level... But much of Florida is below sea level...

yeah if you look at the hurricane centers storm surge inundation map it completely contradicts the static map they give the news. We're talking most places getting 1-3ft of surge but the news keeps saying 10-15ft.

Shocking statistics. It amazes me that every child that enters Disney isn't offered a tracking bracelet or tag. It could be marketed to parents on the premise that they could become separated and this is a precaution. I'm in awe the numbers are this high.
