As a mechanic I can assure you there’s nothing wrong with idling ...99% of engine wear is during start up...nearly every engine failure occurs during changes in power settings IE acceleration or deceleration. Heat soaking occurs regardless of airflow so popping the hood only adds risk of forgetting to close it...as for emissions they’re negligible...modern catalytic converters work damn well...it does burn extra fuel but again fuel burn rate is pretty low at idle ...it would cost you about $1.75 per hour on most mid size vehicles

@electric7487
@electric7487 4 жыл бұрын
When your engine is idling, it's running cooler as well. In cold weather this can be a major problem, as combustion is less efficient at low idle. This means more unburned fuel, incompletely-burned fuel, and ash are being produced, and unburned fuel can also result in washing away that oil film that is supposed to be on your cylinder walls. Also, when your engine is new or freshly rebuilt, the cylinders will have a crosshatch (a series of fine grooves) honed into them that run at an angle (not vertically), and this is designed to help the oil "stick" to the sides of the cylinder walls and lubricate the cylinders. Excessive idling can allow the soot and ash that gets into those grooves to cake up inside the grooves and glaze (polish smooth) the cylinder walls. This can then increase blow-by and crankcase pressure in your engine. At that point you would need to get the cylinders bored out and have sleeves installed, or have your cylinder liners replaced, or have the cylinder walls de-glazed by running them over with a ball hone and drill.

Thank you!! I have tried to explain this to the people in the Van Dwellers page till I'm blue in the face! There are those certain old types that say it's bad to idle for an extended period..When I was a teen in the 80's I would skip sunday school and take mom's keys to our 1980 Camaro V-8 305 4bbl gas engine and sit for TWO HOURS with the A/C on full blast in the heat of FL sun!! Never ran hot! What helped I think was the clutch driven fan..there was no secondary electric fan though...Maybe I'm lucky it never did run hot!!! Since then, every auto I have had I have always had no issue idling for extended periods of time and when I do camp overnight in a van or car whatever I have, I will sleep with the A/C on or the heat on without worry..even moreso thanks to your confirmation!! I tried to explain to them all that newer cars don't just run hot!!! There are safety failsafes in place..even back in the 90's Ford 4.6 V-8 had what was called Fail-Safe cooling where the cylinders would alternate operation to allow cooling of a hot engine..something to this effect anyway..look it up for better idea!

Another problem with idling your engine for long periods of time is that the fuel mixture burn isn't as efficient, as the engine would have a load. Plus the un-burned fuel is washing away the oil from the cylinder walls, causing excessive engine wear. Also the un-burned fuel is getting to the catalytic converters which can plug them up, or burn them up faster than normal.

The big difference between taxis and Ubers is that there is no need to drive around searching for rides. Save your gas. Pull over and turn the car off. You won't be waiting long realistically but some people may feel York need to drive to a possible but area or venue. Rides come from everywhere. Sit and wait. Patience is a big key to driving and preserving fuel.

Hey as far as the metallurgy goes for vehicles made after 2010, I read the following comment below on a forum but it’s the only place I’ve seen it so I wanted to get a second opinion, what do you think? Excessive idling can actually damage your engine components, including cylinders, spark plugs, and exhaust systems. An idling engine is not operating at its peak temperature, which means that fuel does not undergo complete combustion. This leaves fuel residue that can condense on cylinder walls, where they can contaminate the oil and damage parts of the engine. For example, fuel residues are often deposited on spark plugs. As you spend more time idling, the average temperature of the spark plug drops. This makes the plug get dirty more quickly, which increases fuel consumption by 4 to 5 %. Excessive idling also lets water condense in the vehicle’s exhaust, leading to corrosion and a reduction of the life of your exhaust system. Is this true ?
@chrisreed26

That scenario is mostly for a diesel engine..they are better to idle only above 1,000 RPM's..hence why many if not all, even my old 78 Mercedes 300D diesel have a high idle switch to raise the engine speed up..buses and diesel RV's all have a high idle switch to do this too...Not a huge issue on modern gas engines!! Look at how long you see cop cars doing this and NY taxies!! In fact, the average taxi was once a police car so it has had a hard life of idling long periods!! Still running with 400K miles!!! So see, it's not soo bad!

Yep it`s bad to idle, bad for engine, very bad for environment and illegal in UK. An idling engine contributes massively to air pollution, potentially producing up to twice the emissions of a car in motion. Idling engines churn out nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide and particulate matter. These chemicals can have a negative effect on people and the environment by contributing to poor air quality. Therefore, to reduce the impact of these pollutants, idling has been prohibited to limit emissions. What is engine idling? Idling is the act of leaving the engine of a vehicle running unnecessarily. For example, if you’re (picking someone up from school, waiting outside a shop, keeping warm) if you wait with the engine on the whole time, this would be classified as idling. Is it illegal to idle your car in the UK? The short answer, is yes: engine idling is against the law. Also known as stationary idling, Section 42 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 prohibits leaving your engine on when it is not needed. This act enforces Rule 123 of the Highway Code, which states “you must not leave a vehicle’s engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road”. If you do leave your engine idle, you could face a fine upwards of £20, or £80 in areas of London - as per the Road Traffic (Vehicle Emissions) Regulations of 2002. Why is engine idling prohibited?

It’s wise to let a turbocharged engine idle for a few minutes before shutting down the engine, if a high demand for power has recently occurred. This way, oil will be pumped through the turbocharger bearings. High demand for power causes heating up of turbochargers, causing stationary oil in their bearings to break down and leave damaging abrasive carbon deposits. Otherwise, it’s normally alright to shut down engines immediately after parking. Intercoolers are for improving the efficiency (more power OR more economy) of a forced induction (e.g., turbocharged) engine by making intake air more dense. They have little to do with cooling turbochargers. Electric fans on modern cars are used to draw air through engine coolant radiators and intercoolers where fitted. They can reduce the heat in both types of heat exchangers even when the engine isn’t running. This could normally only occur up to a few minutes after engine shut down in hot weather. Such fan cooling of an intercooler would help it to be ready for cooling intake air, if high performance is needed soon after shutting down the engine. 🚙
@localenterprisebroadcastin5971
@localenterprisebroadcastin5971 5 жыл бұрын
hyedefinition1080 you clearly don’t understand how charged air works and why the intercooler is there in the first place 🤦‍♂️...if your engine is making boost at idle you probably have something way worse going on 😂...idling is great for turbo chargers especially after heavy operations, not doing so will heat soak the shaft seal on the turbine and goodby turbo prematurely. You equally want to warm up a turbocharged engine for the exact same reason ...also many turbocharged engines have jacketed water going through the turbo itself anyways 😂
