IS IT A SALAD THOUGH!? | Following A Watergate Salad Recipe

So today I thought I'd attempt a highly requested video and try following a Watergate salad recipe....which honestly the jury is still out on calling this a salad! And just like many other recipes I try on the channel, I found the Watergate salad recipe just as confusing, I still have no idea what whipped topping is, and whether marshmallows actually belong in a 'salad'. However in contrast to other slightly weird recipes I've tried on the channel, this one was actually very nice! The texture, the taste, nothing was off putting, I even enjoyed the walnuts in it! I think it's a very nice, light little dessert and very easy to make, however I refused to call the Watergate salad an actual salad! It's a dessert! Salad isn't dessert!! But let me know whether you've ever tried this Watergate salad recipe before, or whether you'll be tempted to make your very own Watergate salad now!

It's cool whip. In the States, cool whip is sold made and in the freezer. So you store it in the freezer, and would thaw it before using.

Exactly what she said Ant. Our Cool Whip we have to keep in the freezer, then when we want to use it we have to unthaw it. But it is so good! I am glad you enjoyed your Watergate salad. We have quite a few salads in Ohio you would love because they are sweet and refreshing! Love the video Ant!

My mom makes this salad for parties and things! The whipped topping, as far as I am aware and that she puts in, IS cool whip. Which is different than whipped cream. And it's called an ambrosia salad. Some people add coconut and we always add maraschino cherries 😊

LOL!!! I laughed *so much* through this entire video -- you were on fire. Did you know that if you take a Big Mac and chop it up, it becomes a salad... because lettuce and tomato! I grew up in the town where jell-o was invented. So watergate salad was a staple at all holiday events. I love it and am glad you enjoyed it!

I think I was the one that first suggested this. My family isn’t fond of walnuts either so we use pecans instead. The reason they say frozen whip topping is because it used to be sold as frozen to make it last longer. Also people like my grandmother would buy several of them and freeze them for when she needed it. So that’s why it says frozen then thaw. Hope this helps. I’m glad you liked it. Sometimes we use black cherry or orange flavors for a change.

It's a 60s thing I think. Jell-o decided if they called stuff salad, more people would make it, and they would sell more. It worked and thus we entered a few decades of sweet "salads"

Oh my side hurts from laughing!! My mom made a "salad" like this for every potluck at work and every family gathering! Hers was Jello (the giggly kind), fruit (your choice), cottage cheese, cool whip, marshmallows and some walnuts. It looks similar but usually berry flavored Jello. Love you! ❤

This is one of my favorite desserts! We never called it Watergate Salad where I am from tho, we called it Pistachio Fluff or Pistachio Delight

Cafeteria food (back when cafeterias were popular in the U.S.). Usually prepared in big rectangular pans and cut into squares, served on a lettuce leaf. I’ve never heard the expression “dessert salad”-“congealed salad,” yes. I think these things were concocted a long time ago to entice people to buy mechanical refrigerators. 🍑💨

Ant I’m with u I’ve lived in upstate New York all my life and I don’t understand why they call it that bc I know it as ambosha srry for the spelling but when I make mine I use fruit cocktail and cool whip but yea some people call it all different things but I’m glad u liked it ❤❤

So I've never had a watergate salad before, but I have had (and made) ambrosia salad, which is another "dessert" salad. Notice I put dessert in quotation marks, it's because I usually see people eat them as sides to a main meal at potlucks and gatherings not that they aren't eaten as dessert just i personally see them served as sides. That said dessert salad are a bit of an older thing that has mostly fallen out of style except with certain regions, cultures, and age groups. Funny thing, I have a church cookbook (where the recipes are compiled from church members) with tons of interesting recipes including several dessert salads. Including, and I'm not even joking, a diet cherry cola salad.... yeah. 😅

@thinkerdreamersketcherspy ok I had to dig through the book to find it (silly me for not looking in the Soups and Salads section), and it is actually Diet Coke Jello Salad, but in my defense it does have cherry in it. 1 1/2 cups of boiling water 1 large package sugar-free cherry Jello 1 (20 oz) can of lite cherry pie filling 1 (12 oz) Diet Coke Pour boiling water into gelatin and stir till all is dissolved. Add Diet Coke and pie filling and mix well. (Submitted by Debbie T.) That's the recipe. It's kinda lacking some instructions,but I guess that's what happens when normal people write recipes 😅

I am so happy you liked it! Yay! 🥰 And as I'm sure others have said, Cool Whip (and store brands of the same thing) comes frozen from the store, so you have to thaw it. Sometimes it's used frozen, I actually like eating it when frozen, it has a nice texture. 😊 I was one of the many that suggested it. Now, have you done the Waldorf salad yet? It's a fruit salad. It's nummy. My partner says that both of those are famous hotel names (Watergate and Waldorf)... Maybe there's a connection there! lol

We think salad is lettuce , tomato, cucumber etc. variations on that. Im not sure why this is called salad. And something like that would be an addition at a picnic or potluck situation. And it would be desert.
