98.Q. But may images not be tolerated in the churches as "books for the laity"? A. No, for we should not be wiser than God. He wants his people to be taughtnot by means of dumb images but by the living preaching of his Word.

You all said that it’s not only the worshipping of images that is forbidden but also the MAKING of them!! Wow, does that mean then that all artists who are involved in decorating their pottery with animal figures or anything else are breaking this commandment?

If those idols (פֶּסֶל) are designed to portray God, they are what is spoken of. The word "engraven idols" is a poor phrase to translate "פֶּסֶל" into instead of just "idols" There are multiple places where images not used in worship are permitted

But I don't understand what's wrong with creating a painting. Doesn't Idolatry means that I would have to pray to the painting? If I pray to Jesus the son of God, not the physical ink and paper representation of on the wall I'm not even looking at painting when I pray, is that also a sin? Thanks?

The image is a false representation of the true God. A false representation is a false god. A false god is an idol. Even if that does not convince you, you must think of those believers who have and do struggle with the worshipping of such images. For that reason alone, we should not tempt forget or ourselves with idols

@@sircassie891 I see your point. So it isn't that I'm necessarily praying to the picture, but that the simple act of hanging a picture that is meant to represent Jesus is a false idol since Jesus didn't look like that. Right? So if I hang a cross or a bible verse are those idols too? Curious. Thanks a lot!

@Frank Hernandez. Christ is God, and any image of Him is supposed to be an image God. 2nd commandment is clear that we are not supposed to make idols, or worship idols. Meaning 1. Not to to worship something that is a false god. 2. Not to make or have an image of a false god. I would say that the image is a false god, because it is a false depiction of God. I’m sure you wouldn’t hang a picture of a false god on your wall, or keep a Buddha statue beside your bed. False gods are made known by statues, and the true God is made known by His Word. Lastly, believers should long to know God as depicted in the Bible, which is a true and perfect depiction. The depiction of God in an image is an imperfect and false depiction, which leads often to idolatry and sin.

@Marriage4life God the Father is spirit, so even attempting to paint Him would make 0 sense from the start lol. My confusion comes from paintings if Christ the Man, not Christ the God. Jesus was 100% man, so a painting of a man is not a painting of a God. The other thing is that Christ the Man died, when we pray today we are not praying to Christ the man, but to Christ the Son who is in Heaven, so a painting of a human attempt to represent Jesus the man is not really a worshiping deity as we don't pray to Christ the man, but to Christ the God. And I'm honest about it, not being sarcastic or anything here, I'm really interested in what my brothers and sisters think about how I'm seeing things. Thank you all and God bless.

@Marriage4life I'm just saying that Jesus was equally man as He was God. I don't believe I'm bearing false witness by stating a fact. Maybe you should be careful what you accuse me of since bearing false witness implies I'm willingly trying to deceive others, and I'm simply asking questions to my other brothers and sisters about things I don't quite fully understand yet. Matthew 7 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." Also because Jesus didn't hand down an image of Christ to believers it wouldn't mean it is wrong to do so, unless there is supporting scripture that says that it is wrong.

As with other images like the apostles I don't have anything to say against making pictures because I would never worship an apostle or "saint" (in quote because all Christians are saints)

The problem is not differentiating the Old Testament from the New Testament. If we are to obey Jesus, there wasn’t issues with idolization as there was in Old Testament. If we are ok to write about God, sing about God, act like God, worship God, why is art singled out ? That would mean music isn’t art if it is singled out.

You searched for "THOU SHALT NOT MAKE UNTO THEE ANY GRAVEN" in the KJV Bible Words translated as "graven image" Edit The English words "graven image" or "idol" in translations of the Bible may represent any of several Hebrew words. The word is pesel, translated in modern Hebrew as “sculpture”[13] indicating something carved or hewn. In subsequent passages, pesel was applied to images of metal and wood, as well as those of stone. Other terms, such as nēsek and massēkâ, massēbâ, ōseb, and maskit also indicate a material or manner of manufacture.[14]

We should not separate Jesus' deity from his humanity, but there is a distinction which I believe allows us to have art works of Christ so long as we do not worship them or use them as a means for worship. Jesus was fully God and fully man. Yet there was a distinction between his deity and his human body. I do not believe his deity was transferred to his human form. Jesus did not have a divine nose, divine hair, divine skin, etc. Jesus' body grew and changed. Does God change? No. The fact that everybody was allowed to look at Jesus shows us that there is a distinction between his deity and his humanity because Exodus 33:20 says, "No man can see God's face and live." Christ's deity was veiled. One cannot draw Jesus' deity. One can only draw his humanity. The second commandment forbids the making of images and idols for the purpose of worship, not for art or good purposes. I think of the great numbers of people all over the world, who have come to faith in Christ through the Jesus Film.

To be fair to catholics, catholic bibles just combine the first and second commandments together and end up splitting up the last one into 9 and 10. So it is there technically but just under a different number. Also, technically there were no numbers in the original text - they were added later to make it easier to remember certain parts and for easier reference.

Please open you Bibles and read slowly the second commandment Exodus 20: 4, 5. This is His commandment to us. Yes, God directed Noah and his sons to build an ark of gopher wood and certain dimensions, for Moses to build temples and design of certain dimensions, of the sons of Levi to wear special designed robes, and even of the Ark of the Covenants of certain dimensions guarded by cherubim; but these were all at the direction of God. These were of God's will, NOT to be confused with man's will and desires. We, as God's designed creatures do not get to pick and choose which rules, which laws, which commandments we want to follow. Why is it so hard for us to obey such a simple demand of not making any graven image or likeness of any thing that is in heaven above or that is in the earth beneath or that is in the water under the earth. Maybe you are saying, okay, I am not praying to this depiction though....but, if you truly think about it, you are not directing your prayers and thoughts to God but kind of a middleman. Your choice of how you interpret His second commandment. God bless us all in our choices.

@@louism8911 We keep wanting to justify why we want our way, if you will. The second commandment is very clear: no likeness or images. He is not against writing His words and in fact, HE is the one who wrote the commandments on stone tablets for Moses to carry down to his people. Nowhere in the Bible does it state that He is against scribing His words and His deeds for the people to carry with them in the Ark or on skins or parchment, etc. Jesus never spoke against the Torah and in fact would quote it often saying, "It is written...." As far as movies and the actors who portray them: the same very thing. NO difference. We are looking at an idol but in human form. Movies, sculptures of Christ, big stained glass windows, artist's rendering of what they think He looks like has become a big money maker and has become the "middleman" so to speak between God and our worship to Him. He did not describe Himself for this very reason, except to say in Exodus 3, "I AM THAT I AM". It is a big shock to the system when the second commandment really sinks in; completely affects everything in our lives, including how we look at things from now on. And that is what the Lord intended.

The Mosaic Law is the old covenant that God gave to Moses but Christians believe in the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ as our savior for the forgiveness of sins and "as the mediator of the new covenant -for God found fault in the old covenant when he said, "I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the old covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them out of the land of Egypt." (Jeremiah 31:31) According to the Mosaic Law, "All who rely on works of the law are under a curse" (Galatians 3:10) as it is written; "Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of Law and do them". (Deuteronomy 27:26) (This includes Gentiles, non-Jews, and Christians, who do not abide by the Book of Law) The Mosaic law was not perfect, it only revealed sin; "The law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient." (1 Timothy 1:9) but "The righteous shall live by faith." (Hab. 2:4) "But the law is not of faith, rather "The one who does them shall live by them." " (Leviticus 18:5) "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us," (Galatians 3:13) for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree" (Deuteronomy 21:23) (original Greek word of _tree_ is xylon; a timber like stake, wooden beam, tree), so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith." "Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, *_until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made,_* and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary." (Galatians 3:19) _(The offspring is Christ - see verse 16)_ "Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that *_redeems_* them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant." (Hebrews 9:15) _Read Galatians 5:16-25 'Keep in Step with the Spirit', in regards to "The righteous shall live by faith". If you found this helpful take a moment to praise the Lord Jesus Christ, for he has done miracles on me. God bless.

The empty cross pictures that Christ is no longer there (same could be said for an empty tomb) and doesn't picture Christ. I will frequently wear a simple cross but it's just to symbolise Christianity. There's no reverence or special respect (I've dropped it on the ground and in the bathroom without any concern, I don't think it helps in prayer or protection) Early Christians used the ichthus image covertly. The brass serpent remained until it became worshiped (at which point it *became* an idol). Likewise, a cross itself isn't an idol any more than an image of a snake. If it isn't made to be worshiped at any level (veneration is unquestionably a level of worship and adoration comes dangerously close) it's not an idol.

Every man praying or prophesying with his head covered dishonors his head. 3. The head of woman is man, the head of man is Christ, the head of Christ is God/the Father. If Jesus had long hair He would be dishonoring God on a daily basis. I don't believe He did that. Therefore that image of a long haired Jesus is a false image. No your wrong in this video brother. The issue isn’t about carving an image of the things in heaven or earth or in the sea (exodus 20:4) the issue is WORSHIPING those images AS IF they were God. That’s what the context of that passage is saying. If creating a image of the things in heaven, earth or the sea was an issue, then why did God inspire the blacksmiths to create golden cherubim’s that were to go on the sides of the ark of the covenant 5 chapters later?? Or how about the bronze image of the serpent that God told Moses to create and have the children of Israel look upon it in order to be healed, why wasn’t that a sin?? Also might I add you, we read that that same bronze serpent later became an object of worship for the Israelites later in the the bible. So either God is a hypocrite for telling people not to create an carved image of the things in heaven then turn around and tell the Israelites to create carved images OR we can conclude based on scripture, that God wasn’t prohibiting Art but that that Art shouldn’t replace God? Think about it and you let me know!
