▼ ASSEMBLY TIPS AND TRICKS - There are a few tips to building it that we're not mentioned in the instructions.
1. The inside corner brackets. Don't tighten the screws right away. Loosely tighten both screws first, allowing the bracket to move to the right position. Then fully tighten both screws.
2. Belt tightening. Loosen the coupler on the shaft that connects the left and right sides. This allows the sides to move independently. Tighten both belts. Move the X gantry to the front of the machine, and set the left and right positions to the same distance from the front. Tighten the coupler.
3. Cable support and strain relief. Add something to better support the cables so that they don't flop over so easily.

Laser needs to be used outside in an area with good ventilation since it does not have an enclosure and/or exhaust system. An enclosure with an exhaust fan and pipe is available to buy separately, and in my opinion, it is a necessary accessory.

How tight should the belts and rollers be?

That's subjective and hard to measure. Tight enough that there's no slack

damn, great timing, I have been thinking about getting a laser cutter, which one would you recommend for about $1-2k?

Depends on your goals, but the laser cutters like this one are pretty impressive for ~$500. The downside is you need to add accessories like enclosure with exhaust, air assist, honeycomb table, that I find essential. One advantage of these gantry style open frame laser cutters is that the material size is not limited to what fits inside the laser. I often run into issues where I can't fit something inside the enclosed laser, and I also need to cut down material to size, which often creates waste.
