I’m about two adopt two brother parrotlets and I was so concerned but you made me feel so much better about my decision!

Glad to hear it, Ben. Frankly, keeping any social creature alone is considered cruel. That's why a punishment in prison is solitary confinement. And yet we do it to birds...

THANK YOU! The rescue I got my parrotlet from gave him to me by himself even though he’s been with a flock all of his life, and he’s MISERABLE. They keep insisting that parrotlets should be alone, but it’s so obvious that he needs another bird.

I hear this sometimes, people saying that Parrotlets should be alone. I just can't understand why people would think that. They are social animals. Plus, being small, they rely on their flocks. I have parrotlets in flocks of 10! Of course, they have a cage that's big enough to accommodate them, plus plenty of food and water. I'm glad you recognize that your parent let should not be alone. Besides, a Parrotlets wanted to be alone, they wouldn't bond with us either!

I'm thinking parrotlets, and recently asked on a forum how loud they are (not noisy, but loud - I live in an apartment). I'd said I'd be wanting a pair so they don't get lonely when I have to have a life outside of feather time, and... Pretty much *every* response was "You can't have more than one! They've been known to fight and even kill each other!" Have they though? Just because everyone says something doesn't make it true. How is this such a common problem if nobody actually ever has two together!? As you say, they're flock animals. The reason people have solo birds seems to be so the bird will bond to the human as though the human's "their bird". How can having more than one encourage violence and death, unless they're constantly battling it out gladiator style in the wild... It all sounds like the same crap I heard, still hear, about "You can't have two male guinea pigs together, they'll kill each other". I've only ever known of one pair of guinea pigs kill each other, and... They were girls.

I see that you think for yourself instead of taking what people say at face value. I like you. studio.kzbin.infopyar4IQn47c/edit That link is to my video of my Parrotlet aviary where I have 10+ Parrotlets living together - with no serious issues. Yeah, I totally agree. If you couldn't''t put two together, they would never be seen together - in a flock - in the wild. And, humans could not breed them, how would we? Illogical. I'd get two. I got two plus :) Love them, they are adorable. They bite when they are young, but they get better as they become adults around 1 year. Adorable and they will bond with you if you spend time with the two of them :). LMK what you do and how it goes.

Are you saying they always will bite you if they live together? I have two babies who came from the same clutch. Currently housing them separately so they can bond to me, but they are together for several hours daily in the room. I am sad if I have to house them separately always
@ParrotBliss2 жыл бұрын
I would not have some separately at all. I would put them together. No, they go through a biting face. It doesn’t matter whether they are with another or not.

Ok. Thank you. I am hoping all will go great and they will continue to be affectionate and bonded to me always.

I have 1 male parrotlet … he is so sweet been locked up too long but he is coming around .. I leave his cage open… I think he is sooo lonely … should I get another boy to be friends? I don’t want to breed … but can you have a girl and not breed?
@ParrotBliss Жыл бұрын
You can get another male, they will bond, or a female. With no place to breed, they usually don’t. Or, if they do, you can give them ‘fake’ eggs - little wooden balls. Get another male, they will be happy and you’ll love it too.

I don’t understand why you never have a toy in your hand when you handle them. They are always biting on you and you make a big deal of the bites. Since you repeatedly set up the biting of your hands, well, you’ve successfully taught them the hand biting behavior. It’s such bad modeling for people who don’t have much experience with birds. There are many simple techniques for teaching parrotlets how to interact with humans...sans bites. I have to wonder why you don’t bother to model any of them.
