I have always had my cats neutered as we need to reduce unwanted cat numbers. Currently I've a male and female cat (same litter), they are wonderful but the 'girl' brings me at least 4 mice a week as she thinks I'm a bad hunter. When my dear wife was dying of cancer, my girl cat used to leave dead mice at the bedroom door because she seemed to know my wife needed help - it was so touching. After my wife died, my boy cat (who was closer to my wife) kept looking for her for ages....

I'm 71 years old. I got my first cat when I was 17. I have had at least one cat in my life for the last 54 years for a total of eight cats. I never went looking for a cat. All my cats came to me as strays, showing up at my back door as young kittens looking for a home. I have been fortunate that most of my cats lived to their early 20's. I have had both males and females and can attest to the fact that my boys were more cuddly and affectionate than the girls, but I loved them all equally. I lost my last cat in January and miss him very much. Cats are the best.

Genuine question have you had cats before? What advice would you give to someone thinking about getting a cat/ cats who never grew up with animals?
@MerryJones4 жыл бұрын
@@Gusto4now *Try to gather as much information as possible and prepare well!* That is the most important thing. :) . . Most things you can find out pretty easily but there are some things I always see being forget, done wrong or not acknowledged (especially in countries where cats are not that popular) because people just don't know better and there are so many wrong information and misconceptions in general and as a cat guardian and biologist it's really important to me to let people know who want to adopt. . *So here are 9 things that are not always mentioned in "things you should consider before adopting a cat":* . . *Visiting an animal protection/welfare organisation (not a shelter) and talking to the people there* was super insightful for me because unlike shelters they usually are more careful about who adopts their animals (shelters are awesome, don't want to talk them down by any mean and I appreciate the work they do, animal welfare and protection often just have more money, less animals and better habitats, therefor they can often give you much more information and help). . Think about the fact that a cat/cats will probably be with you *for the next 15 years.* . You need to vaccine them once a year, neuter them if they are not, take care of fleas (once your cat has them they are a pain in the ass!) and other vermin. Also check their teeth and gum regulary. Operations can get super expensive if your cat needs one, so be sure you can *always put some money back for the vet or get an insurance.* . *Adopt either two cats* (e.g. friends, siblings; I recommend Jackson Galaxys "How to Introduce Cats" YT video if you get two strangers and that you talk to the people you adopt from to find out which cats can work together) *or an older cat that has always been alone and is absolutely not able to socialize with others anymore.* Cats are social animals and they usually need another cat to fulfill all of their needs (grooming, playing, scramble) otherwise they might develop depression and "bad" behaviour (e.g. attacking feet). There are many miscoceptions about this topic but cat specialists, behaviourists, vets and zoologists came clear about it and can proof that in most cases cats do better if they are not alone unless they have been alone most of their lives and can't get used to other cats anymore. Also of course special needs cats should live together with cats that work well together with them (two blind cats are good with each other, a blind cat and an ataxia cat could cause problems). . *Buy wet food* (cats ancestors live in the desert-> cats don't drink much because they get water from their food, kibble even drains water so you should only use this as a treat and for clicker training, cats that feed from kibble get sick more often) *without grains and sugar* (literally all the big brands are super unhealthy for cats) *and at least 70% meat.* Where I live you can get this good quality food a bit cheeper if you order it online. . If they will be indoor cats make sure to *give them enough space to climb, run and scratch. Best cat trees are the ones with a huge diameter stem (+15cm).* Cats love if you build them a parcour. *Use shelves and other platforms* to build a climbing parkour for your cats so you maximize the space they have without blocking space on the ground. Make sure they have either a *balcony, an outdoor enclosure or good viewing places at your windows* where they can watch/listen to birds and the outside world. . Cats are very clean animals, make sure to have *enough litter boxes* (number of cats+1=number of litter boxes, so for 2 cats you would need 3 litter boxes) and clean them up every day/every other day because otherwise your cat will find other places to do their business at. . Obviously (but still so important to mention) *don't hit your cats or punish them for doing things wrong. Build a good relationship with positive reinforcement*, do clicker training and correct wrong behaviour the moment you see it in a gentle way (You see the cat shitting on the carpet? Pick them up and put them in the litter box while they are doing it without saying anything). . *Don't bathe your cats unless it is necessary* (Sphynx need a bath every week, Long Haired need to go to the groomer or you need to groom them yourself). They can clean themselves up pretty good and especially a Short Haired that lives indoors will not need any baths. . . I know it seems like a lot but if you really want to adopt cats or any kind of animal I hope you appreciate as much information as possible! :)

I disagree. I've had both male & female cats. The personality is the biggest difference. Out of about 21 cats in 63 of my 70 years: the boys roam, even when neutered, if they can get outside. Every other female has been cuddly. My experience is the earlier they are spayed or neutered the more likely they stay Mama's baby. The current cat in my life was gotten for my husband, as a companion as I worked to support us. Even though he was cruel & rough with her so loved him dearly. Everytime he went in the hospital or overseas to visit his family she blamed me, as proof the bite & claw scars on my body. Now he's passed away she still looks for her Daddy. At night she roams around calling him. It has been 15 months, she grieves for him more than I do (they had 8 years together as opposed to our 40 years). Personality begins showing-up as early as 4 to 6 weeks. A cat that will allow you to hold them on their back without struggling to flip over tends to be a cuddler, a snuggler.

@@kathe.o. nah.. sorry in my own experience. I am 33 yrs old. We adopted several cats. Im honest we never neutered males. The only reason we adopt cats is we feel bad about ourselves as they would definitely starved outside. Our local govt has no time handling stray animals. We live in a poor rural place where many cats roam. Our very first adopted cat is female i was 5-6 yrs old. I cant remember if she was cuddly but shes well behaved. My favorite is a black male and another orange male who nearly "murdered" my finger. Both can be very calm. They sleeps beside me and will allow to awkwardly sleep above me. I dont say all female are not cuddly. Some young females are very energetic. I once played with this little female so mad for straight 30 minutes using string toy. But males are a still the one I would choose. There is certain "knowledge" that female cats have that can lead to being irritated. Example: my mother got major scratches that lead to 2 inch wounds by 1 of our female mother cat because i think we never properly feed her enough.

Wait until your male kitten is between 6-8 months, and a year old before neutering them. Their urethra is smaller, and needs time to develop fully, otherwise there is a increased chance of urinary blockages which are fatal if not treated right away. Also avoid dry cat food, and only feed them wet food as this increases urine acid levels, which dissolve the crystals that form blockages.

All my cats were neutered, but I've always had either a male or a female cat who assumed the position as watchdog and protector in the household. When I lived alone Angel always alerted me whenever someone approached the door at least 15 to 20 minutes before. She actively discouraged repair persons from coming in to do the work and I had to pull her aside and take her out of the room. I always explained to her that the workers meant no harm but she never believed me. My other females left the policing up to her. When I lived at home my male cat Bandit protected my mother weeks after my father died. One day the cat defended her against one of her so-called 'friends' who attempted to rape her when she was home alone. Bandit attacked the man and drove him out of the house. That was all the more amazing because previously Bandit was extremely friendly with that man and would purr and rub up against him.

She once attacked the meter man in our basement by flying through the air and attaching herself to his midsection yowling and scratching. We had to throw cold water on her to get her off him. He never came back. And we also put our cat into a room with the door closed when people came over that she might view as potential targets. Although it was embarassing when she would meow and throw herself against the door.

As someone who owns one girl and two boy cats, let me bring up another potentially crucial difference this video didn't touch on: urinary problems. Male cats of many breeds are at elevated risk for urinary blockage if they aren't fed a careful diet, and while it's easy to treat, it can cause serious illness or death if you don't catch it right away. Symptoms include extreme pain (they will vocalize it to you), litter box avoidance, attempts to spray around the house that release little or no urine, and, in severe cases, visible distension of the bladder.
@Mari14Bella4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I have a 10-month-old male cat but I'm highly protective of him. Would you see urinating once a day is average? He eats a mix of wet and dry food daily
@fawfulfan4 жыл бұрын
Mari Bella it's good he's got wet food. You're probably fine to keep doing what you're doing, and if he ever does have that problem, your vet can recommend specially formulated food. As I say, the symptoms are pretty dramatic so if you're a loving owner who pays a normal amount of attention, you will notice if it happens. The cat wouldn't simply be urinating infrequently, he would be unable to urinate at all. And it would be very painful, so he would let you know.

I've had cats all my life and my experience is just the opposite. Male cats are calmer and more loving and do NOT mark if you have them neutered by 12 wks. Female cats should be spayed by 12 wks also. But females are more on guard by nature because of their instinct to bear and protect their litters. Both should be kept as indoor pets to keep them from socially inappropriate behaviors. The minute you let them roam outside, instinct takes over.
@NotHumant87274 жыл бұрын
All truth but further on from my experience, males aren't so tolerable to mistakes, do it for to long, or something wrong, you will feel it as teeth in your skin! They have to be more aggressive when needed, they are males and in nature they often fight for females.

I always thought that as well, and my cat is probably a rare exception so I don't recommend not getting them spayed or neutered - she was never spayed because of her age and of a heart murmur so surgery would be more of a risk. she never tries to make a run for the door and is one of the calmest sweetest cats ever. she's never scratched or hissed at me once since I had her, she lets me brush her fur all over including her belly and trim her nails, she protects me from bugs and sits on my lap 24/7

I used to swear by female cats until I was pretty much bedridden and in a wheelchair and needed something to give me incentive to get out of bed. A friend brought two kittens round, one female which I thought I would take as female had always been my favourite but the male was so loving and affectionate and loved being held like a baby in your arms that I decided on taking a punt and getting a male cat. Mood Moos turned out to be the most special cat, he loved to play fetch, hung round me all the time, gave me the incentive to get up out of bed and learn to walk again. I had him for 8 beautiful years before he was killed by the next door neighbours dog who escaped his yard and came into mine. It has not been about 12 years since I lost Moos and I still think about him every day. I have had other cats since who have all been male. I tried a female but took her back as she didn’t like anyone so only male cats for me from now on. They definitely patrolled their territory and got into a lot of fights with other cats in the neighborhood. I aways think back to wild cat behavior. When leaving the mother male kittens from many species will stick together to maximize their ability to acquire territory and mates and will bond with each other.

My 3 year old cat, Leila, was being used as a breeding machine for 3 years straight. All of her kittens were taken away from her. This made her develop trust issues. I am very allergic to cats, and never thought my mum would get one for me. When we first got her, she ran straight under the couch and stayed there for most of the day. I stayed with her. But, it turns out, all she needed was time. Before a full day passed, she was already all over me. But she has ended up 4 weeks pregnant now because we didn't have time to neuter her, but we are making sure all kittens when born are healthy and safe, along with her poor mom. Cats are amazing, nobody can tell me otherwise. ✊✨💞👏

A gender comparison without mentioning the arguably most significant difference which is size, with the larger males often requiring more food, more litter, sturdier trees, larger boxes, etc. compared to their female counterparts. When neutered there's really not that big of a difference in characteristics between the genders, rather the personality of the individual, the breed, their environment and their upbringing matters a lot more. Also, you may note that the majority of the comment section points out that males are far more loving from their experience. Don't take that as evidence, people who disagree with the statements made in the video are simply more inclined to comment than those who agree.

I say, if you're thinking of adopting another cat some years later, let that first cat be a male. This is based on personal experience. A neutered male cat is very accepting of a new cat (through the requisite "introduction process" of course . . . 🐱) in their house, where a spayed female is not, and may never get entirely used to the other cat. I've never had any instance where the older male cat didn't bond with the new kitten. However, many years ago, this female cat I had, she was never accepting of the younger cats that came into the house after her, although the male that was older than she was did bond with them.

The only thing I can think of is that female cats, even after they're spayed, are instinctually fiercely protective of their territory from "new" Interlopers because . . . they're female, they don't want any potential danger to their kittens. I always thought it would be the other way around but sometimes nature still surprises us.

Female cats don't run away when they are in heat; they go out to socialize with male cats. Courtship. They come back after two three days. Or they can come back after a few hours or a day.

What matters is the connection between you and your pet(s). When I first saw the picture of my baby girl cat I knew - she was part of my soul. She lives with me over 2 months now. Never been happier❤️

The adoption coordinator at my local shelter had the best advice for picking a cat to take home: Choose with your heart. I went in thinking I’d get a young adult female but a four month old black male kitten choose me, and I love him still, all 20lbs of him.

Our female was more independent, but very nurturing and protective. The male was very cuddly and needed a lot reassurrance to feel safe. Neither took any changes happily, even moving furniture was a weard phenonome for them. Both lovely. ♥️

My boy is the most needy cat ever! He’s absolutely adorable and so sweet. I just got a new girl kitten yesterday. She’s already way more independent. 😂

We made a choice year's ago that our cats are indoor only, they are still fixed we just feel it's safer. We do plan on getting a catio to give Tyrael the outside feel while being safe.

yeah i dont understand why people let there cats outside, its just wrong as an owner as they live half of what there suspost to live compared to indoors.

@@BERSERKERKINGREVIEWS I don't understand how can people lock a cat in a house for 15-20 years. It's cruel. Some people live in extremely tiny homes. I tried it with my cat, he became depressed, fat and peed on the walls. He is 11 years old now, happy and healthy like a kitten. He goes outside whenever he wants to. Also, I love my cat to death, but keeping sh*t (it smells way worse than dog poop) in your own home, near where you eat and sleep and having to scoop it out every day is soul crushing. If you live in America for example where bears, wolves or even birds come into your garden and every crazy person can get a gun, or near a busy road, I understand. BUT, other people have different circumstances. If you live in the proper environment, neuter the cat, let them come in the house and train them, it is perfectly fine to let them outside. Indoor cats, especially purebreds are very boring in my experience, they have no personality, just sit around all day and you can do whatever you want with them, like they were dolls. Many are fat or have behavioural problems.

I had a female cat who loved me...until about 6 mos. later we adopted a “friend” for her....big mistake! She gave her love and attention to my husband at that point, and the male kitten grew to adore me and was the most loving and cuddly cat and lived to be 18 years old! I believe that female cats generally like boys & men more- she also was very fond of my son who would play with her...and male cats like women more! But I have had 2 more females, and they are quite affectionate, the last being less cuddly but still loving.

Totally agree..I've noticed the same thing. Opposites attract even in mixed species!

I’ve had cats all my life, and in my 38 years females have ALWAYS been less affectionate and more independent/stand-offish than males. The typical cat that gives affection on her terms. Male cats have always been friendlier, more loving and cuddly-AFTER they were neutered. You should ALWAYS-WITHOUT EXCEPTION-get your cat fixed, especially if it’s young. For males it curbs their territorial behavior and causes them to be more docile and less likely to fight. Both my males were fixed before they turned 1 and they’ve always gotten along perfectly. However, one of them is indoor/outdoor, and neighbor Toms that aren’t fixed will jump him and bully him. If you can’t adopt an already fixed cat (almost all shelters spay/neuter before adoption, or have spay/neuter agreements and provide discounts for the procedure), and you can’t afford to get it fixed, or have the time, don’t get a cat. Period. There are far more cats than dogs in shelters, and far more cats than dogs are euthanized, often as tiny babies, due to overflow in shelters and how much attention newborns need. Of course the same goes for dogs. ALWAYS SPAY/NEUTER YOUR PETS. You’ll all be much happier and healthier, and you’ll help the animal shelters too!

I've had the luxury of living with a female Russian blue cat (my cat) and two male cats ( a Siberian, a Maine Coon, different owners, different apartments). while the male cats were well behaved and liked me, they were both less affectionate. I also found the male cats to whine more. My cat, while affectionate and chatty is more reserved. Also, female cats tend to be fiercely territorial. More so than males in my opinion. They were all friendly with one another but she definitely wanted to establish her dominance.
