You definitely made me think about my opinions about this topic. On one hand I agree that a 'generic' manga can be just as good as a unique manga, but countering that made me think about why I love jjba, blue lock and other series which could be regarded as unique. I think my conclusion is that when people talk about 'reinventing the wheel' it doesn't imply that a manga is good because it is different, but because they love the quality/execution of the certain aspect of a manga which seperates it from others. For example, me loving the artstyle of jjba, is loving something different because there are so many 'generic' manga out there that share the same 'basic' artstyle. Now again, if you for example like the 'generic/basic' manga artsyle that is not a bad opinion. It just results in you loving a lot of series almost equally in that aspect so nothing sticks out and becomes your favorite series. Or something 'generic' becomes your favorite if all your preferences of (artstyle, story, writing...) align with a 'basic' series.

Bro I have a lot to say One I definitely agree with the first part, in my opinion there are so many ideas on paper that sound so cool that break away from the mold that could only be good with the right execution. The first manga that comes to my brain is ZOM 100, where the idea of someone in a zombie apocalypse being happy and grateful for it is fun, but the execution makes it even better. Honestly yeah I understand the last part too. If someone happens to like manga as One piece, Black Clover, MHA, pretty generic manga looking at least in Shonen action, that doesn’t mean he likes generic manga as a whole. That just means those aspects confide with his sense of quality. My main issue was not that manga was going out side the box, but that it being out of the box was inherently good. I honestly just hate the term ‘renventing the wheel’. I just wish it wasn’t a main point for so many people and instead they could talk about why it’s good. Like you with JJBA, I love the art style of JJBA and I’m guessing you do too, but I would rather say the art style is good than the art style is different. And that’s with really anything in manga.

I think the biggest reason people get so excited about "reinventing the wheel" is because they stick to the main stream companies like shonen jump where that's the whole shtick. If you branch out you experience different styles more often and then you appreciate the "generic" stuff even more. This is all imo though

I agree 100% I definitely understand with anime because bigger anime will get bigger budgets so there’s not much variety, but with manga you can read an incredibly niche manga that has the best art/writing known to man.

First of all, One punch man picks up at volume 4 and only gets better from there so I recommend that you continue it. It's the art, simple panelling and fast paced story that make it so addictive (at least for me). But obviously if you really didn't like the first three volumes then you should probably drop it. If a manga reinvents the wheel, or it's almost completely original, I don't care. I think the problem with the term 'reinventing the wheel' is that it's not specific enough, because literally every manga reinvents the wheel in some way, like characters, worldbuilding, fights, plot structure, dynamics, panelling, art style etc. Not every trope, panel and word in a manga can be fully original and never used before ever in any piece of fiction ever. Which means that every piece of fiction 'reinvents the wheel' in some way, so technically the term doesn't even matter anymore. Also it's not very satisfying to say, I don't know if that's a factor for you but it is for me lol. However, I do care if a series aligns with my taste, whether original or not, because that's personal and it does affect me. Thanks for listening, I could watch you rage about opinions all day it's really entertaining

Yeah I should mention I did like One Punch Man and plan on reading more of it, just the amount of praise I heard was inproportionate to the actual quality, in my opinion. I agree tho and I think I should have said to begin with that I understand the feeling of not wanting to read the same thing over and over, but that’s different from saying just because it’s not the same means it’s good.

Collecting cliche manga is all fun and games till there's that random volume that's impossible to find and the ones that exist are listed for 500 bucks

If you’re talking about like old Shonen then yeah definitely. I was trying to buy D. Grey Man but it’s pretty expensive.

@@idontmanga6692lol. I feel your passion though in the rest of the video. I think people say reinvents the wheel as a generic term for something new to them. To me it is valid in that sense. but I understand that people may not take it like that and want a more informative response. Lots of people will struggle to express feelings and thoughts, but I will try to make sure I think harder about what really drives my interest in manga series. ( I don’t ever remember saying that I like something because it reinvents the wheel, but I definitely won’t be using that going forward 😄)

My main problem was people using it as a positive, like that’s a reason something is good. Just the statement itself is not bad, but that’s all it is, just a statement.
